A bankrupt company can file Chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code to "reorganize" its business. According to the SEC, if a business files Chapter 11, "Management continues to run the day-to-day business operations but all significant business decisions must be approved by a bankruptcy court." During Chapter 11 bankruptcy, the U.S. Trustee, the bankruptcy arm of the Justice Department, will appoint one or more committees to represent the interests of creditors and stockholders. The committee works with the company to develop a plan of reorganization to get out of debt. The plan must be accepted by the creditors, bondholders, and stockholders, and confirmed by the court. Cheers and Gears is now.... Cheers and Rondels Last week I rented a 3-series zipcar. Quite frankly, the 2 hours with the car has taught me the error of my ways. As such, I've decided to change our name to Cheers and Rondels. The General's troubles and our own Pontiac Custom-S's departure from GM to BMW make the timing of this change perfect. So remember. Pushrods suck, especially the harsh and rough LS series, reliability and servicability don't matter if you get free maintenance for the first 3 years, and leatherette is perfectly acceptable in a $33,000 Civic sized car.

Cheers and Gears Quick Drive Saturn Astra 5-Door Member WhiteKnight does a Quick Drive of the Saturn Astra 5-Door. After our dealer told us there was yet another overnight wait in store for the Aura as the on-board computer had started to sour, they gave us a switchblade-style key that went to a dark blue hatchback, none other than an Astra five-door, the most ungainly member, in my opinion, of the Astra line-up. Chevrolet Enjoying Higher Transaction Prices While the market share declines of the mainstream domestic brands during the past decade have been well documented, the price declines of these brands relative to their Asian competitors have received less attention. The past month or so has been the best time in eight years to buy a pickup — and, as predicted, it looks as if the time is getting even better. General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) is currently offering a total incentive package of up to $11,115 on its 2016 Chevy Silverado 1500 Crew Cab LT All Star. That’s almost double the company’s September average incentive of $5,647 on a pickup. GM was not the only automaker offering big incentive packages on pickups. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV (NYSE: FCAU) offered an average incentive of $7,082 on Ram pickups last month. Ford Motor Co.’s (NYSE: F) offer on the F-150 was the lowest of the three at $5,173. As far as FCA is concer…

Child safety advocates lobby for vehicle sensors March 10, 2006 BY JUSTIN HYDE FREE PRESS WASHINGTON BUREAU WASHINGTON -- Child safety advocates launched a blitz Thursday for bills in Congress that would require automakers to install safety devices aimed at protecting children. The Kansas-based Kids and Cars coalition, along with Consumers Union, say the bills -- one in the House and one in the Senate -- would sharply cut non-crash vehicle accidents that they estimate killed 213 children last year, with at least 1,000 deaths since 1999. Both bills would require automakers to install systems to improve visibility behind vehicles and design power windows that automati…

Original article: http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/busi...icle6067339.ece Sales of vehicles in China hit a record last month, underlining the country’s rise in the market as carmakers in the US scramble to avoid bankruptcy. Chinese people eager to leave behind the age of the bicycle bought 1.10 million vehicles in March, up some five per cent from the previous record of 1.06 million in March last year, data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers showed. The number cemented China in its position as the world’s largest car market, outstripping even the US. Sales have been buoyed by a desire among Chinese to have a car of their own – in many case…

Generous government subsidies have been behind China taking the lion’s share of global electric vehicle sales in recent years — but now they’re being called to question and face another scandal. While the country saw its “new energy vehicle” sales spike 79 percent last year and its domination of global sales confirmed, that came from government-funded subsidies allowing automakers to offset their manufacturing costs and consumers to pay affordable, competitive purchase prices for electric vehicles (EVs). “The consequence of the subsidy-fueled growth is that it also triggered excess production capacity, because everyone wants to benefit from government support,” …

Wall Street Journal China-Made Tires Are Subject Of Lawsuit After Fatal Accident By TIMOTHY AEPPEL June 25, 2007 1:02 p.m. A recent lawsuit arising from a fatal auto accident in Pennsylvania is pointing toward another potentially hazardous Chinese import, this time tires. The accident occurred last August, when a steel-belted radial on a cargo van carrying four passengers allegedly experienced a tread separation -- the type of problem that prompted the big Firestone recall of 2000 -- causing the driver to loose control and crash. Two passengers were killed, the two others injured, one severely. The tire's U.S. distributor -- Foreign Tire Sales Inc. of Union, N.J., …

There seems to be little doubt that Chinese cars will hit the U.S. market some soon – the big question is when. At least one automaker is suggesting that Chinese cars will enter America by way of Mexico, with production starting in 2010 and sales in the United States by 2015 after first making the rounds in Latin America and Canada. That date may have been sooner had we not hit such a nasty global economic crisis. Perhaps the most interesting part of this scenario would be the distribution chain. Instead of using franchised dealerships, Mexican-built Chinese cars could be sold at large retail chains like CostCo and Walmart. GS Motors, the Mexican distributor for China's…

High Mileage Compacts Are Rising While Hybrids Fall William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com June 21, 2011 With the price of gas being on the high side for the past few months, you would think hybrids would be flying off dealer lots. In fact, its the opposite. In July 2009, hybrids reached a peak of 3.6% for total US sales. Since then, hybrid sales have been declining. Last month, hybrids made up 1.6% of total US sales. Part of the reason is due to earthquake in Japan back in March, but doesn't account for all of the drop. Most of the drop can be accounted for people going towards compact cars with high gas mileage. Sales of the new Chevrolet …

To say that today the average auto is a supercomputer would be an understatement. Auto's are being asked to do so much now that many take it for granted what they can do and others wonder why self driving auto's are not already normal here after years of self driving auto's being promised. Part of this is computer tech only now getting up to speed, other reasons is adoption by people. Consumer Reports decided to check out just how good is autonomous driving and is it more of a Semi-automated driving. Truck Rated Safe, With Asterisk Synopsis Link to NY Time article WHEN the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety announced the latest list of what it considers the safest vehicles last week, there was a surprising newcomer: a pickup truck. The newcomer is the Toyota Tundra, which beat its domestic competitors from Ford, Nissan and Dodge. The Chevrolet Silverado and a close relative, the GMC Sierra, were not among the vehicles tested. Starting last year, the institute added a crash-prevention feature, electronic stability control, to its criteria. The Tundra got the top pick designation even though its stability control system doesn’t work when four-wheel-drive is…

Consumer Reports: Never To Be Truted? Posted on 08.13.2007 12:00 by Ralph Kalal Link to original artical on www.topspeed.com Consumer Reports, the publication of Consumer’s Union, has long been accused of a bias toward imported cars, particularly those made by Japanese brand manufacturers, and against anything built by a Detroit automaker. The bias hasn’t changed. Apparently, it’s intentional and institutional. The current issue of Consumer Reports purports to offer a comparison test of the new Toyota Tundra pick-up truck and the Chevy Silverado, as well as the Dodge Ram and Ford F-150. So, you’d expect them to get comparable vehicles, wouldn’t you? Apparentl…

DETROIT - Asked recently how the U.S. minivan market has been faring, Nissan's Dominique Thormann had a concise answer. "It collapsed," said Thormann, a senior vice president of Nissan North America. While the rapid decline in pickup and sport utility sales has been grabbing the headlines, minivan sales have also taken a tumble, falling 20 percent in the first five months of this year. And unlike trucks, which could rebound once the construction industry picks up, it's unclear if minivans have a future in the U.S. market or if they're being killed off by crossovers and the stodgy taint of the soccer mom image. "The future of the segment is up in the air," said Tom…

My buddy's brother runs a hydraulic shop where they sell a lot of plows. My buddy told me the shop just got a notice from toyota NOT to install any plows on tundras or the warranty will be voided. Bro is pissed, he'll have to return like 25 toyo-spec plow packages to the manufacturer. Don't know what will happen with those trucks that already have them mounted... Apparently there are frame engineering issues under load that toyo doesn't want to be bothered with fixing or warrantying, but I have not seen the bulletin. Anyone else heard of this?? Oh... what a feeling.... of letdown.... again.

_ Could this be the Next 300? Chrysler didn't have a whole lot to show for itself at this year's NAIAS besides a rebadged Lancia. However, behind the Lancia was a promotional video, and in that video are clips of what might be the next 300. Hit the jump to see more of it. Could this be the Next 300?

As of yester day Crane Cams went out of buisness. I had said a few months back we would lose some of the players in the perfromance aftermarket and this is the first to fall. I know of several others who have had money trouble while times were good and I don't expect them to weather the economy down turn.

Crash Testing Stickers Mandatory by 2007 Stickers displaying crash ratings must be on vehicles in U.S. showrooms next year, a requirement that could prompt voluntary changes by automakers if they fail to meet consumer expectations, government officials and safety advocates said on Thursday. The safety displays must be on all vehicles, except pickups, no later than September 1, 2007, which will cover the 2008 model year. They must be prominently displayed and convey the government's five-star ratings that includes data on front and side crash protection and rollover risk. US crossover vehicles go into sales slump July 14, 2008 5:47 PM ET DETROIT (AP) - When Ford Motor Co. came out with its new Edge crossover in 2006, the company hoped the truck-like vehicle built on a car frame would attract longtime Ford buyers trading in their inefficient sport utility vehicles. For a while, it worked well. But last month, sales of the Edge and nearly all crossover vehicles dropped dramatically, causing another worry for automakers struggling with the dramatic shift by U.S. auto buyers from trucks to cars. Automakers and some industry analysts say it's a temporary lull due to a combination of economic worries, sliding SUV values that pr…

Chevy Exec Alan Batey had some interesting comments about the new Cruze 5-door when interviewed about the potential for a hot hatch or performance model like so many automakers offer in this segment. “We’ve really positioned this as sporty, and to appeal to those young, fashion-conscious consumers that are looking for something in the compact segment,” he said, with the Cruze’s 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine (with 114kW of power and 240Nm of torque) a standard fit for the US market. When asked if there is potential for a performance model – with a big engine – to come, he said: “Yes – for sure, for sure”. http://www.caradvice.com.au/408651/…

Detroit News wire services / TOLEDO -- Auto parts maker Dana Corp. on Tuesday reported a third-quarter loss of nearly $1.3 billion as a slumping automobile industry forced it to realign its business, triggering massive charges during the period. Its shares tumbled more than 20 percent. The company, which makes brakes, axles and other parts, reported a loss of $1.27 billion, or $8.50 per share, for the three months ended Sept. 30 compared with a profit of $42 million, or 28 cents per share, a year earlier. Sales edged higher to $2.4 billion from $2.11 billion last year. "Obviously, ou…

http://www.autoextremist.com/current/ New Detroit vs. Old Detroit in Washington. By Peter M. De Lorenzo Detroit. In the last week I have done several live and taped radio interviews across the country and with the BBC in London, a spirited interview with Diane Tucker appearing in The Huffington Post entitled, “Journalist to GOP: You're 100 Percent Wrong About U.S. Automakers,” and I have several national and international TV appearances slated for the next few days too. The subject? The looming implosion of Detroit, of course. People want to know the who, what, when, where, why of this whole thing, and they want to know about the cost, both in terms of taxpayer mone…

[ Link: http://www.autoextremist.com/ After the smoke clears, it's time for America, Inc. By now it should be obvious to even the most casual observers that the domestic automobile industry is on the verge of total collapse. Already reeling from the gas spike earlier in the year and the subsequent decimation of the light truck and SUV markets, the national financial and credit crisis has conspired to cut the amount of survival time for two of the three domestic automobile makers from years to just months, leaving General Motors and the Cerberus-owned Chrysler LLC on the brink of bankruptcy. And it has also finally become obvious to even the most jaded anti-Detroit z…

auto extremist read the first two bits on this page. I more than agree with what he is saying on both topics here. Toyota's new hybrid ads are full of pomposity and also, the highlight on Japanese protectionism and currency manipulation, well, maybe we're about to hit the wave here soon where folks get a little anti-japan sentiment. I'm ok with some Japanese car bashing, personally. Delphi Backs Off Threat To Unions

Delphi Corporation on Monday backed off a threat to cancel union contracts if no agreement on concessions is reached by mid-December. A Delphi spokesman says the decision was prompted by "progress made with GM," Delphi's biggest parts customer, toward helping Delphi climb out of Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. At the same time, November sales figures show U.S. carmakers struggling to keep up with last year's numbers. Edmunds.com forecasts Chrysler will finish the month with new car sales up nine percent, Ford down eight percent, and GM up one percent. But Japanese carmaker Toyota appears to be heading to an improvement over last November of 14 perce…

Dec. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Auto executives in Detroit, just like unionized hourly workers, are having a tough time these days justifying their paychecks. The bottom line? Assembly-line workers may not like to hear this, but pay for the bosses is about in line with that of other U.S. manufacturing executives, according to surveys. The issue of executive compensation is coming to a head as Delphi Corp., the bankrupt maker of auto parts, has asked the court to approve bonuses and financial incentives designed to keep top officers and managers from bolting to other jobs. The United Auto Workers union, which represents most of Delphi's 33,000 hourly workers in the U…

Delphi Strike Would Put Toyota In A Bind
by Guest Josh- 3 replies

Conventional wisdom has it that an imploding GM-UAW-Delphi triangle would force Delphi to cut its U.S. business with GM, push General Motors Corp. closer to bankruptcy and gut the union's future. Less conventional is the reality that Delphi Corp. and its United Auto Workers-represented plants also stand to lose growing numbers of contracts with the world's would-be largest automaker, Toyota Motor Corp., if it gets pinched by UAW strikes. And Delphi knows it. Chairman Robert S. "Steve" Miller and President Rodney O'Neal were in Japan last week to reassure executives of Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Suzuki -- companies Delphi figures could account…

Delphi Tossing Unprofitable GM Contracts It's been a year since Delphi filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, and the supplier is still trying to find ways to return to profitability. One of the things it's identified as a way to get back into the black is ridding themselves of unprofitable contracts with General Motors. They have been quietly shifting some of these orders to outside firms. One example is the contract for GM full-sized pickup truck steering knuckles that recently went to EaglePicher Corp., which is no stranger to Chapter 11 itself. Delphi also dumped the contract to build catalytic converters for GM's new pickups, which still had three years on i…

Once Again We’re Driving What’s Not Made Here By LOUIS UCHITELLE | September 30, 2007 | Link to Original Article @ New York Times NOW that the Big Three automakers are shrinking their labor costs — removing what they have so frequently described as the biggest obstacle to selling more cars in this country — they should be able to regain market share. Right? Well, not exactly. The game has changed. The foreign companies against whom the Big Three compete are selling more and more cars that are not made at their factories in the United States, making labor costs here less important. They are importing again — in fact, quietly importing almost as many cars as they did in…

JULY 18, 2006 Insight By Ed Wallace Detroit Ignores Its Dealers At Its Peril Heavy discounting and added costs by U.S. automakers are bleeding its dealer bodies Most auto industry observers think they know what is wrong with Detroit. As General Motors weighs a possible alliance with Renault and Nissan, and Ford hands out the pink slips and slashes its dividends, the Greek chorus of critics has its favorite targets of what to fix first: expensive labor contracts, poor understanding of the market, mediocre designs and quality, resistance to hybrid technology and an ossified bureaucracy that is out of touch with reality. Yet, the sharp-eyed will have noticed that progr…
