North American International Auto Show in Detroit (NAIAS)

  1. We were a bit worried about Volkswagen's showing at Detroit was only going to be the long-wheelbase Tiguan. But there is another vehicle that will be shown alongside. Volkswagen has released some teaser shots of the next I.D. concept and it looks like it will be a van - something akin to the Microbus judging from one of the pictures. The concept will be using Volkswagen's upcoming MEB (Modular Electric Drive) and use two electric motors - one up front and another in the back. This will provide all-wheel drive. This concept will also feature self-driving technology where a driver can press a button and steering wheel will retract. Various sensors, cameras, and las…

  2. Audi is the latest automaker to tease their reveal for Detroit Auto Show. This is the Q8 Concept which will be going into production in the next few years as the brand's flagship SUV. Up front is a large, octagonal grille and narrow headlights. The side profile features a coupelike roofline and bulging fenders. Audi says the design is reminiscent of the famed ur-quattro coupe from the 80's. We can see some of it in the side, but not in other areas. “With the Audi Q8 concept, we have created a new spearhead within our Q model line. Its design strongly evokes sportiness and prestige. What’s more, we believe an important aspect of this showcar is that it offers a sp…

  3. The coronavirus has caused a number of auto shows to either be pushed back (New York) or cancelled (Geneva). Add another show to the list as the Detroit Free Press is reporting tonight at the Detroit Auto Show has been cancelled. In a memo that was sent to sponsors today, organizers of the show said that the TCF Center (formally known as Cobo Hall) has been designated as field hospital by Federal Emergency Management Administration [FEMA] for the next six months. "The health and welfare of the citizens of Detroit and Michigan is paramount. TCF Center is the ideal location for this important function at this critical and unprecedented time,” NAIAS executive direc…

  4. William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com January 9, 2012 The Volkswagen Jetta can boast they offer many choices in the compact car class; two naturally aspirated, a turbo, and a diesel engine. Now, a new powertrain is joining the family. Volkswagen introduced a new Hybrid version of the Jetta today at the North American International Auto Show. The Hybrid will utlize a 1.4L turbo engine producing 150 HP and 184 lb-ft of torque and a 20-kW electric motor. The powertrain combined with a 1.1 kWh lithium-ion battery and seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox propels the Jetta Hybrid to 60 MPH in 9 seconds and return a combined 45 MPG. 6. This past year at the Detroit Auto Show, Lexus unveiled the RC F which packs a 467 horsepower V8 engine. For the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, Lexus is readying another F model debut. The automaker released two teaser shots revealing a new body kit, and a set larger wheels and brakes. We don't know what the model is, but speculation is ranging from a new IS-F to F version of the GS. We'll have more details when Lexus presents the vehicle on January 13th. 7. The LC Convertible concept was only the appetizer to what Lexus had for their main course at the Detroit Auto Show this morning. The 2020 RC-F and RC-F Track Edition are bringing some small improvements that will hopefully bring some big changes. Like the standard RC, the RC-F comes with an updated front and rear fascia, and new lighting. The 5.0L V8 engine gets a small bump in power to 472 horsepower and 396 pound-feet of torque (up five and six respectively). A new higher final drive ratio for the standard 8-speed automatic transmission and launch-control system drop 0-60 mph time to 4.2 seconds. That's nothing compared to the new Track Edition which drops 176 p…

  9. It has been talked about for quite sometime, but Hyundai is making it official today at the Detroit Auto Show. The Korean automaker introduced their first N-Line model, the 2019 Elantra GT N-Line. N-Line brings forth a number of the exterior design cues and changes to suspension found on the standard N models to the basic models. For the Elantra GT, N-Line will be taking the place of the Sport. For the exterior, the N-Line brings a unique front grille, lower front spoiler, blacked-out side mirrors, and 18-inch N-Line wheels. 10. Usually, the announcement of a Chinese vehicle debuting an auto show doesn't make our radar. But this one is a bit different. The Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC) will be bringing three vehicles to the Detroit Auto Show, one of them will be a world premiere. This isn't GAC's first time in Detroit. A couple years back, the company showed off several vehicles. The world premiere is the GAC Motor GS4, a "high-performance compact sport-utility vehicle". We're a bit dubious on the 'high-performance' part as this vehicle will come with either a 1.3L or 1.5L engines, both turbocharged. However, the GS4's looks seem to fit the 'high-performance' concept with a lowered roofline, …

  11. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com December 10, 2013 Lexus is the latest automaker to issue a teaser for what they have in store for next month's Detroit Auto Show. Was up at NAIAS yesterday and walked through the show. Going to sum this up the best I can. GM booth had a more open and basic layout, yet was nice to move around in. But in prior years they used to have a 2nd level, stage and a few other large scale turn tables but had none of that this year. I was very suprised not to see any boasting of the plug in hybrids (Volt, Flexstream). They were both there but were just casually setting in the mix of things. They didn't even have the cut away chassis of the Volt. Very suprised they didn't setup a large, more informative display about the Volt at least. Toyota was deffinatly trying to play the green card. They had a Prius with st…

Sales of the Nissan Titan are typically in last place behind the Detroit-3 and the Toyota Tundra. Nissan is hoping to change that with the 2016 Titan. While still camouflaged in these pictures, we get a better view of the revised truck. In the video, we can see the new truck being put through various performance tests and if you look closely, you can get a hint of the new interior as well. New Cadillac to make its debut at Detroit Auto Show The 640-hp, 6.2-liter LT4-powered CTS-V will make its debut at the Detroit auto show in January. 0-60 mph time of 3.7 seconds. The fenders are wider to accommodate the bigger wheels and the hood bulges to cover the 1.7-liter supercharger. Power is sent rearward to an electronically controlled limited slip differential. Caddy also skipped the carbon ceramic brakes on the V, the stock iron discs are better prepared to stop the car repeatedly from high speeds without long-term noise or chatter. The car will be offered in six colors, which will be available in limited numbers.

  19. Infiniti finally pulled the sheet off of the Q60 Concept today at the Detroit Auto Show, allowing us a full view of all sides and inside. The low slung coupe is the future design and engineering direction for Infiniti. The Q60 will be put into production in a few years time and will be the debut model for a new family of turbo-charged, direct injected engines. We've heard that both 4-cylinder and 6-cylinder engines will be available but very little else was offered from a technical level. The interior has hand stitched leather with carbon fiber accents and is surprisingly roomy for a 2 by 2 coupe. The exterior features LED lighting and light piping, even the badge …

  25. Volkswagen has a double feature for next week's Detroit Auto Show. One will be a production model, while the other one is a concept. First up is the production model which is the 2015 Volkswagen Golf R for North American. Like its European counterpart, the Golf R will come with a turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder with 290 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque. New for the North American version is the choice between a six-speed manual or DSG transmission. Volkswagen's 4Motion all-wheel drive system will get all of that power to the wheels. 0-60 MPH is quoted at 4.9 seconds for the DSG and 5.3 seconds for the manual. Other changes for the 2015 Golf R will include a stabi…

  26. We've been waiting a while for the Audi Q3 to arrive in the U.S. But next week at the Detroit Auto Show, Audi will reveal the 2015 Q3 that will be going on sale in the third quarter of this year. Now as reported back in October, Audi wanted the Q3 to be classified as a light truck. However, the model didn't meet certain criteria such as approach angle. The company decided to a mid-cycle refresh to perform these changes and the result is the 2015 Q3. Looking like a Audi Q5 hit with a shrink ray, the Q3 will be the smallest crossover in Audi's lineup, ready to take on the likes of the BMW X1, Buick Encore, and Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class. Power will come from a turbocharged 2…

The first? That would be the Porsche Boxster concept back in 1993, which puts this Chevrolet Camaro in pretty darn good company. We certainly aren’t alone in our admiration. The Infiniti QX50 Concept falls into the latter. An evolution of the QX Inspiration concept, the QX50 doesn't really differ a lot in terms of exterior design. The front end is similar to the Q60 Coupe with a large grille and chiseled bumper. The side profile shows a bit of sculpting and a creasing running underneath the window. The design is all over the place and the rear just looks rediculous (including the clear plastic and chrome spoiler) but cut the roof off the damn thing and there you have the largest, most dis-porportionate, ugliest rear-end design ever on a car (my opinion). 55. After weeks of teasing us, Infiniti has finally spilled the details on the Q Inspiration Concept today at the Detroit Auto Show. The best way we can describe the Q Inspiration is the Japanese automaker's take on the Porsche Panamera. It features the classic proportions of a coupe with a long front end, sloping roofline, and short rear deck. The front is quite busy with a "double-arch" grille finished in white. Move inside to see the very minimalist and clean interior layout. The seats look quite futuristic with white leather upholstery and orange accents. At first, we thought the Q Inspiration would feature an electric powertrain of some kind, due t…

  56. The long road to Volkswagen's crossover for the U.S. has taken another turn with the introduction of the Cross Coupe GTE Concept. The concept falls in between the seven-seat CrossBlue concept shown at Detroit last year and the and the CrossBlue Coupe shown at Shanghai. The concept carries such details as a two-bar grille, narrow headlights, and flared-wheel arches. As a whole, the concept reminds us of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, especially in the back. The interior is basically the same as the CrossBlue concept with a 12.3-inch screen for the cluster and a 10.1-inch touchscreen display. Power will come from a plug-in hybrid powertrain which pairs a 3.6L V6 and two electri…

  60. For release: Dec. 20, 2007, 12:01 a.m. EST MORE THAN PERFORMANCE: CORVETTE ZR1’S CHASSIS AND SUSPENSION DELIVER A CONFIDENT, COMFORTABLE DRIVING EXPERIENCE DETROIT – Its supercharged engine twists out more than 600 horsepower and nearly 600 lb.-ft. of torque. Its racing-inspired dual-disc clutch channels that power to a set of massive, 20-inch by 12-inch rear wheels, helping push the ZR1 to more than 200 mph (320 km/h). It also corners with the grip of a hungry Kodiak bear – delivering more than 1g of lateral acceleration – and stops with exceptional immediacy. Yet for all its astounding performance attributes, the 2009 Corvette ZR1 has a refined driving experience …

For release: Dec. 20, 2007, 12:01 a.m. EST PERFORMANCE-DRIVEN DESIGN SUPPORTS THE CAPABILITY OF THE CORVETTE ZR1 – AND GIVES IT AN UNMISTAKABLE ATTITUDE DETROIT – In 1990, the Corvette ZR-1 caused a stir with its wider quarter panels, convex rear fascia and squared taillamps. They were the visual clues that identified the special car – the shark fins that made the ZR-1 stand out in a sea of feeders. Spotting the ’09 ZR1 at a glance is a snap, too, with its unique, carbon-fiber dual-port fenders , exposed carbon-fiber roof panel, rockers and front splitter, as well as a unique rear spoiler. Also exclusive to the ZR1 is a raised, carbon-fiber hood with a polycarbonate…

  62. For release: Dec. 20, 2007, 12:01 a.m. EST CORVETTE ZR1: IT’S GOOD TO BE THE KING DETROIT – Few new cars have ever caused the stir that whipped up around the 1990 Corvette ZR-1. It started with fuzzy spy photos and Detroit gossip about a high-powered, “King of the Hill” model. Chevrolet was coy, neither confirming nor denying the grist of the rumor mill. Rumor became fact at the 1989 Geneva Auto Show, when the ZR-1 officially debuted. It was a time when performance cars were only beginning to regain some of the underhood strength enjoyed during the heyday of the muscle car, and the ZR-1’s 375-horespower (280 kW) LT5 V-8 engine – with its DOHC configuration and four-…

  63. For release: Dec. 20, 2007, 12:01 a.m. EST 2009 CORVETTE ZR1 POWERED BY THE MOST POWERFUL PRODUCTION ENGINE EVER FROM GM: THE SUPERCHARGED LS9 SMALL-BLOCK V-8 PONTIAC, Mich. – When it arrives next summer, the 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 will be the most powerful and fastest production car ever produced by General Motors, with performance enabled by a new, supercharged 6.2L LS9 small-block V-8 engine. Incorporating the engineering experience already found in the Corvette Z06’s LS7 engine and the new-for-2008 6.2L LS3 of the Corvette, GM Powertrain is targeting 100 horsepower per liter for the LS9, or 620 horsepower (462 kW), and approximately 595 lb.-ft. of torque (8…

  67. We are a little more than a month away from the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, but much like the Christmas music in stores the day after Halloween, companies like to tease us for a month or two ahead of time. One of the earliest teasers (that wasn't a full reveal like the Mercedes GLE) is the next generation Toyota Tacoma. So far, all we get to see is the tailgate of the 2016 Toyota Tacoma that will be revealed in about a month. We're expecting styling to borrow heavily from its big brother, the Toyota Tundra. The Tacoma has been the best selling small truck for a number of years now as the Detroit three ceded the segment to the Japanese. However, To…

  68. Almost a year after MINI revealed the new Cooper Hardtop, the automaker announced the hotted-up John Cooper Works model that will debut at the Detroit Auto Show next month. The new John Cooper Works model comes equipped with a tuned 2.0L TwinPower turbo four-cylinder with 228 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. You can pair this with either a six-speed manual or automatic. MINI quotes 0-60 MPH times of 6.1 seconds for the manual or 5.9 seconds for the automatic. A sports suspension will be standard on the John Cooper Works to provide excellent handling. However if you value your spine, you'll be happy to hear that you'll be able to swap the standard suspension at n…

It's late and I'm tired so I'm going to make this breif.... Although I saw pretty much everything I'm going to focus on the big 3 Dodge (Chrysler) - SRT vehicles looked pretty cool on the exteriors. Dodges interiors overall (all vehicles), to bluntly put it, sucked. Not at all impressed with the company that turned around the big 3 in design in the mid 90's when it comes to this area. Very cheap/cheesy looking interiors, interior design and dashboards. Dodge Caliber was a disaster IMO inside and out. Amazed they could bring something like this out to production (said the same thing with the Charger last year). Dodge is capible of a lot better with their vehicles. Challe…

  72. As we accurately judged a few weeks back, Volkswagen's concept for the Detroit Auto Show is another Microbus. But don't call it that, instead call it the I.D. Buzz. Volkswagen is clear in their press release that the I.D. Buzz "is not a retro design on 22-inch wheels." We're not fully sure on that because it looks like Microbus with the large Volkswagen emblem up front, two-tone paint, and a large area of glass. The only point you can give Volkswagen about it not being a 'retro design' is the front end not being so blunt. The interior can seat up to eight people and there are some nice details such as a wooden floor and LED ambient lighting. Technology features inclu…

By taking the 8 moniker like the A8, the Q8 once in production form, will stand at the top of the Audi crossover lineup. Up front, a very large honeycomb grille in an octagon shape makes the trademark Audi look even bolder. Narrow headlights and tail lights using laser technology give the Q8 a serious look. Powering the Q8 is Audi's plug-in hybrid system using a 333hp / 368 lb-ft 3.0 liter TFSI engine coupled to an electric motor capable of 243…

Detroit 2010: a review The big story at this year's Detroit show is without doubt the staggering turnaround of Ford. The new Focus was the most significant launch of the show, and the new Fiesta has just gone on sale in the US. In fact, it's too early for either of these cars to show up in the company's American results - the Focus doesn't even hit showrooms for another year. But Ford had an obvious spring in its step at the show. It's simply a better-run, better-focused company than it has been in living memory. It has the same mission all round the world, and is converging the vehicles rather than making a rag-bag of different ones for different regions of the planet…

This marked an important milestone for the brand as this would be their first vehicle that would exported from China. Detroit saw the Swedish automaker introduce the long-wheelbase S60, but under a new trim. Meet the 2016 Volvo S60 Inscription. Compared to the standard S60, the Inscription gets an additional 3.4 inches between the B and C-pillars (182.5 for the standard S60 vs. 185.9 for the S60 Inscription). This is to improve rear-legroom which in the standard S60 is quite tight. The Inscription also gets nicer wood trim, larger sunroof, and unique 19-inch wheels that are exc…
