Toyota's Continued Growth: 2 More Plants in N.A. Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T) will build two assembly plants in North America, Japan's Mainichi newspaper reported on Saturday. Toyota is considering building a plant in northern part of Midwest to assemble Yaris compact cars which are selling well, the Japanese daily said. The plant, with the annual production capacity of 200,000 units, was expected to be operational in 2009, it said. Toyota will also build another plant in North America to start producing sport utility vehicles around 2010, it said. Read "Toyota to build two plants in North America" @ Yahoo

Toyota's Environmental Image Challenged Never mind that the Toyota Prius is popular with environmentally conscious motorists -- some environmentalists still wonder if Toyota is living up to its image as a green automaker. Environmental groups, led by the Natural Resources Defense Council, are challenging Toyota Motor Corp.'s opposition to strict fuel economy standards pending in Congress, a position the Japanese company shares with General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler LLC. During the past two weeks, about 8,300 NRDC activists sent e-mails and faxes to Toyota urging the company to support a Senate energy bill that would set a 35-mile-per-gallon requirem…

In other news in Europe, Toyota's partner Peugeot will likely allow Toyota to use some of its platform such as the very Epsilon-like platform used by the 407 and the very Chi-like platform currently used by the 607. What does this mean? That the the next gen Yaris and Corolla will get handling and suspension help from the French. More interesting is the fact that these euro-platforms will lead to Toyota finally having a Camry and an Avalon that have good handling. The 2012 Camry,ES, & Rav4 will likely be on the 407-platform. The next Avalon, Highlander, Sienna, and possilbly the next Tacoma will likely be on the 607-platfrom. This will mean several things. GM must …

Toyota's Tundra Tactics Here's the latest on Toyota's plans to challenge Detroit's dominance of the full-size pickup market with an all-new Tundra. The last of the 2006 Tundra pickups will be built in Princeton, Ind., later this month. That will mark the end of the design that was dismissed by true truckers. The bigger 2007 version, which aims to be a more legitimate challenger to the F-150, Silverado/Sierra and Ram, is set to start shipping to dealers around Feb. 12, which coincidentally is Lincoln's birthday (the 16th president, not the American luxury brand). The biggest Tundra, the CrewMax that will be shown at the Detroit auto show in January, isn't expected at …

When Toyota introduced its Prius hybrid car in America seven years ago, Detroit laughed it off. With gas prices at $1.50 a gallon, they argued, no one would buy it. But Dan Becker embraced the little mileage miser. Then head of the Sierra Club's global-warming project, Becker invented an award to give Toyota: the Sierra Club Award for Excellence in Environmental Design. Then he took the Prius on a 50-city promotional tour. Finally, Becker paid Toyota the ultimate compliment; he bought a Prius. Today, Becker is still driving the car, but he's no longer praising Toyota. Instead, he now calls the automaker a "hypocrite" for siding with Detroit in opposition to tougher new ga…

"Delicious rumors of a new Toyota Supra continue to make the rounds in Tokyo. Word on the street is that Toyota is planning two versions, using the recent FT-HS North American International Auto Show concept as a template." The main version will receive an improved version of the 3.5-liter V-6 from the IS350, producing 330 brake horsepower, and will be aimed fair and square at the next Nissan 350Z. However, if the grapevine is correct, Toyota will also do a V-6 hybrid using a ramped-up version of the GS450h powertrain on a shortened rear-drive platform. This one would pack 400 bhp. Few would doubt that the hybrid variant is really the car Toyota wants to build, becau…

Toyota’s ultra-low-cost car threatens ‘big three’ Toyota, the world’s second largest carmaker by sales, is working on a radically different approach to car design, development and manufacturing in an attempt to come up with an ultra-low-cost car, according to its president. “The focus is on low-cost technology,” said Katsuaki Watanabe, in an interview with the Financial Times. “Everything from design to production methods will be radically changed and we are thinking of a really ultra-low-cost way of designing, using ultra-low-cost materials, even developing new materials if necessary.” The move comes as Toyota is this year set to overtake General Motors as the world’…

This was a video obviously put together by Ford marketing, and compares the new Silverado and Tundra to the F150. Apparently 28mph is the harmonic sweet spot for the Ford (why not 25 or 30mph?). Anyway, Looks like the F150 and Silverado were dam near equal, but the Tundra is flopping all over the place!

Toyota adds cheaper Tundras Alan Ohnsman | Link to Original Article @ DetNews Toyota Motor Corp. will add 13 more versions of its full-size Tundra pickup, including lower-priced models with fewer features, as Japan's largest automaker targets a bigger share of U.S. truck sales. Changes for the 2008 model year include "Tundra Grade" DoubleCab and CrewMax trucks for $1,400 and $1,990 less than the cheapest 2007 versions, Toyota said Tuesday. They are aimed at buyers who need a basic work vehicle, said Irv Miller, vice president for U.S. communications. Toyota's latest quality issues could lead to a recall of the brand-new Tundra pickup. Some owners of V-8 Tundras have reported camshaft failures in their trucks. Toyota told the Detroit News that it had logged 20 such complaints. The problem could affect as many as 30,000 Tundras built at assembly plants in Indiana and Texas. Toyota had planned to sell 200,000 Tundras in the truck's first year as a part of an aggressive expansion plan in the United States . The company has opened a new San Antonio plant to assemble the truck; has expanded an Alabama engine plant to supply to factory; and has also started construction on plants in Ontario and Mississippi as it tries to m…

From Auto Extremist Example # 1: Example # 2: It's simply arrogance and ill will. They know Americans are either too dumb or don't care enough to notice and I think they get a laugh out of doing things like this... THIS is why I hate the asian companies so much. They come here, destroy our industry and subsequently hundreds of years of history and identity (with the help of the minions they've recruited in this country) and thinks it's all a big joke because "they own us" It's all about attitude and it's been going down this way for years, yet apparently everyone is too blind to see it.

Video: Lexus LS460 Parking Itself It's difficult not to meet Lexus' claim of a self-parking LS with skepticism. Can a full-size luxury car really tuck itself neatly into a tight parking space? Scion ex D in Amazon Green, manual, with the 16" alloys, mats and short shifter. Kind of reminds me of a mid-teens antique Mack truck, with its coffin nose. Motorweek's YouTube vid from when it came out in '08 says it'll turn a mid-16 second quarter, and it gave them 38+ mpg, which is well above the EPA estimate. Only thing, it said the manual gearchange is a bit long in throws, hence the short shifter.

The latest issue of Wheels has an article amongst its Car of the Year feature detailing an accident that occurred during testing. They were testing the new Kluger (Highlander) along a gravel left-hand bend at 100km/h at the Lang Lang testing ground (a bend they use to test high-speed stability, and which they've used with countless other cars). They had two Klugers, both with ESP, one FWD and one AWD. The FWD was regarded as having dodgy dynamics by all the testers, having "inconsistent steering and ESP all over the place, alternately over intervening, and at other times nowhere to be seen". The AWD was taken out along this bend and it started drifting, but the ESP …

Who's Afraid of Toyota? The Wall Street Journal By Holman W. Jenkins, Jr. (Commentary) Feb. 21, 2007 Edmunds.com for years reviewed the Toyota Echo, the company's entry-level vehicle, by describing it as the cheapest car in America and still overpriced. Even after the Echo was finally dropped last year from the U.S. market, the authoritative auto site couldn't resist reminding shoppers it had once whispered in their ears, "Friends don't let friends drive Echos." And Edmunds offers only marginally more favorable comment on the Toyota Yaris, the vehicle that took the Echo's place, calling it a "decent subcompact" but advising shoppers to "keep an open mind" about compe…

The version built by CTS (lower) is the subject of a massive recall, and the 2.3 million units in affected Toyota cars are to be “fixed” by the insertion of a steel shim. This CTS design is also being modified for new Toyota production, currently suspended. To our knowledge, Toyotas built with the other design (by Denso, upper) are not subject to any recalls or NHTSA investigations,. We have spent the last two days tearing down both unit…

Right on the heels of Toyota taking a minor beating at the hands of Consumer Reports while claiming it carries nary a scratch, the Japanese automaker is recalling eight passenger car models made as far back as September 1999 for various faults. In Japan, the recall amounts to 471,827 cars, with another 680 cars sent to five export countries that needed to be fixed. Toyota was given an offic…
