The battle drums are beating along the Potomac, and the message ringing unmistakably loud and clear in the ears of Senators and congressional representatives is this: The U.S automobile industry doesn’t begin and end with Detroit, southeast Michigan and the Midwest – a city, a state and a region that have apparently become expendable to the powers that be in Washington – but rather its tentacles spread out across the union in a powerful network of small and large businesses alike, from the local auto dealer franchise in small-town A…

  3. MORAINE, Ohio (AP) β€” The General Motors Corp. plant in this Dayton suburb is a forest of smokestacks that form the nerve center of this industrial community built along the banks of the Great Miami River. Each day, about 2,500 workers file inside to assemble the GMC Envoy, Chevrolet Trailblazer, Saab 9-7X and Isuzu Ascender sport utility vehicles. But some time before the summer of 2010, the Moraine plant will be no more: It is one of four that GM announced Tuesday it will close. And there are fears here that the people β€” and the city's fortunes β€” will disappear with it. The loss of the SUV plant will leave behind a bleak landscape for the surrounding community, an …

GM deal 'a black day' for Canada's auto sector By GREG KEENAN, From Thursday's Globe and Mail One of the key pillars supporting Canada's long-standing competitive advantage in the auto industry began crumbling Wednesday, less than a week after another one collapsed. General Motors Corp. and the United Auto Workers reached a deal that shifts the burden of retiree health-care costs for U.S. workers to the union. The agreement dramatically reduces GM's burdensome cost structure and once it's followed by Chrysler LLC and Ford Motor Co. , will reduce the health-care advantage Canada has used for more than a generation to help lure automotive investment to this country.…

  5. FRANKFURT (Reuters) -- General Motors Europe's workers plan warning strikes on May 3 to press for a deal that would secure enough production volume at GM's plant in Antwerp, the carmaker's European labor leader said today. "Moreover we demand a contract guaranteeing the future of all GM Europe plants including Powertrain until the end of 2016," Klaus Franz told Reuters. He would not rule out further industrial action in order to persuade GM to build more than just 80,000 units of what will likely be a small Chevrolet planned to plug in a yawning production gap left after management decided not to build the next-generation Astra compact in Antwerp beyond 2010. This plant is also expected to assemble powerplants for the upcoming Chevy Cruze that will replace the aging Cobalt when it goes into production at GM's Lordstown, OH plant in April 2010 as a 2011 model. Fritz Henderson, GM's former chief operating officer, said at a news conference that his pay will remain unchanged now that he is head of the troubled automaker. His base salary as COO was cut 30 percent to about $1.3 million this year when GM accepted government loans. The 60 day mark is critical to GM, as it is the government's drop-dead date to satisfy Auto Task Force viability requirements. The cash infusion will help struggling dealers with dried up credit channels, but it will also be used to finance cars and trucks to people with credit scores under 620. The under 620 crowd is referred to as subprime, a term that is now synonymous with the words "bailout" and "recession." General Motors’ application on June 1st for Chapter 11 protection from its creditors, triggering the biggest industrial bankruptcy in history, was nonetheless a momentous event. There was story that GM was cutting back on orders of pickups equipped with the 5.3L V8 due to supplier issues and the concern of dealers not being able to move as many trucks because of GM's decision to not pile on incentives. Well here's another bump in the road. Automotive News is reporting that GM has cut back production on regular and double cab version of the trucks due to a supplier issue. GM's plant in Fort Wayne, Indiana has cut production from 1,500 trucks a day to 1,300 due to a supplier not being able to deliver enough axles. …

I think we need one, tidy little thread in which we can succinctly state all the possible outcomes of this Delphi vs. UAW debacle going on right now. The reason being, I think that we can use our information to deduce all the possible ways that this will affect GM. Only a few rules I want to mention: - Don't get into a big pissing match/flame war here. There are plenty of other threads where you can have fightin' words. - Try and keep theories as simple and easy to comprehend as possible. Not all of us are business majors. - Even if you think your theory is stupid or implausible (e.g: the UAW accepts Delphi's $9/hour offer), chime in anyway. The more d…

  59. Just when you thought General Motors couldn't dig any deeper with the ignition switch recall, they seem to find a way. The U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee released over 600 pages of documents relating to the GM ignition switch recall early this week and it shows a number of deeply entrenched problems. Let's begin with a story we reported last week that said two engineers from GM, Gary Altman and Ray DeGiorgio were put on paid leave. We knew DeGiorgio was put on paid leave for testifying for not knowing the part change, even though he signed a document authorizing the change. But Altman was another question as we didn't know why he was put on paid leave. We now …

GM management to blame FLINT JOURNAL LETTER TO THE EDITOR Tuesday, April 04, 2006 by Theodore Edick Let's take a look at some of the decisions General Motors' top-level management has made over the years, and it will be easy to see why it is in the fix it's in. Several years ago, the Oldsmobile Cutlass was the third-best-selling nameplate behind Chevy and Ford. So GM canceled that car, and eventually did away with the entire Oldsmobile division. Not many years ago, Buick LeSabre was the best-selling Buick, so GM did away with that nameplate. Also Buick's best-quality LeSabre plant was the Buick City plant in Flint, and GM not only stopped production at t…

Part of the order was to disclose detailed safety issues and meet with officials from NHTSA monthly. This could be extended up to three years. Well after a year of being under scrutiny, NHTSA has decided to extend it one more year. The Detroit News obtained a letter from NHTSA to GM dated on May 14th. The letter, written by Timothy H. The President may be getting ahead of himself. Watching the unlikely coalition arrayed behind him as Mr. Obama committed the U.S. to an astonishing passenger-car mileage average of 39 miles per gallon by 2016, it looks truer to say we are merely standing together in this adventure, for better or worse.
