Carmaker group backs House fuel-saving plan Toyota, Big 3 alliance call proposed 32 mpg for vehicles "rational" hike in gas economy rule Ken Thomas | Associated Press | Link to Original Article @ DetNews WASHINGTON -- A key auto industry group on Monday endorsed a House proposal to increase gas mileage standards for new passenger vehicles to at least 32 miles per gallon by 2022, calling it a more reasonable approach than a Senate plan approved last month. The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, which represents General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co., Toyota Motor Corp. and DaimlerChrysler AG, said it would build support for the plan to require cars and trucks to get m…

America's Dirtiest Vehicles When it comes to pollution, these cars prove it's not just about fuel economy. Just because a car has low fuel efficiency doesn't mean it's the worst polluter on the road. The Chevrolet Suburban and Dodge Challenger are some of the biggest gas-gulpers available, but they don't cause quite the environmental harm other cars do. MORE AT FORBES.COM That title is reserved for vehicles that combine their poor gas mileage with high tailpipe and greenhouse gas emissions. Think along the lines of some of the bulkiest cars on the road, like the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Chevrolet Trailblazer and Dodge Dakota. While fuel economy is linked to emission…

Detroit’s primacy threatened by Asia; a painful restructuring underway With sinking sales to job cuts by the thousands, it’s no great exaggeration to say that when historians write the history of America’s big automotive manufacturers, 2005 will go down as one of their most dreadful years. That’s not to say the American automotive business is in dire straits — on the contrary, it’s thriving. Automobile sales are still strong, but while times are good for some manufacturers, the nation’s two biggest — General Motors and Ford — are in the midst of a massive and agonizing reorganization, hobbled by a shrinking domestic market share, plunging profits, and the high wages…

Backseat Driver The Small Car Conundrum Jerry Flint, 12.13.05, 12:12 AM Small cars make sense for obvious reasons, but they have never caught on big in the U.S. While such vehicles may gain ground in this market, I don't see them becoming a dominant force here--unless gasoline climbs past $5 a gallon. Detroit first flirted with small cars a half-century ago. As World War II ended, the big U.S. automakers believed there would be a tremendous demand for a new generation of small, light cars to put car-hungry Americans back on wheels. In 1944, then-young Henry Ford II said his company would build "a lower-priced car than had been offered the public since…

Linkity Americans Start to Curb Their Thirst for Gasoline By ANA CAMPOY March 3, 2008; Page A1 As crude-oil prices climb to historic highs, steep gasoline prices and the weak economy are beginning to curb Americans' gas-guzzling ways. In the past six weeks, the nation's gasoline consumption has fallen by an average 1.1% from year-earlier levels, according to weekly government data. That's the most sustained drop in demand in at least 16 years, except for the declines that followed Hurricane Katrina in 2005, which temporarily knocked out a big chunk of the U.S. gasoline supply system. This time, however, there is evidence that Americans are…

September 26, 2005 Most Americans favour oil company taxes to finance alternative energy research Washington, D.C. - A poll conducted by the Opinion Research Corporation found that four out of five Americans surveyed would support a "tax on the windfall profits of oil companies", if the revenues were devoted to alternative energy research. The poll of 1,019 respondents, conducted for www.40mpg.org, also found that 87 per cent of Americans polled think oil companies are gouging gasoline companies; 81 per cent say the federal government is not doing enough about high energy prices and over-reliance on Middle Eastern oil; 73 per cent believe that recent gas …

Americans Want Econoboxes? SUVs Back Over 50 Percent of Vehicle Sales National Review For the first time in more than two years, SUV sales account for more than half of the U.S. auto market. This will come as no surprise to readers of this blog, as we have charted the growing rebound of light truck sales as the U.S. economy has (albeit slowly) rebounded and gas prices remain under $3 a gallon. The trend comes even as Washington issued a new edict that vehicles average an absurd 62 mpg by 2025. The current absurd standard — 35 mpg by 2015 — has forced manufacturers to invest billions in new small-car development. Today, manufacturers are in defiance of their own custom…

James B. Treece Automotive News November 3, 2008 - 1:59 pm ET Dear Mr. President: Please raise the gasoline tax. The country needs to keep moving toward using less imported oil, which means less use of oil -- period. The federal government has mandated higher fuel economy standards. That's a first step. But we tried that before in an era of cheap gasoline, and it failed. You can take fuel-efficient cars to the consumers, but you can't make shoppers open their wallets. They need a reason to want those cars. For a while this year, we had that. With gasoline prices up around $4 a gallon (still a bargain by world standards), consumers wanted fuel-efficient …

Analysts: Feb. Auto Sales Should Be Up By DEE-ANN DURBIN, AP Auto Writer Sat Feb 25, 12:20 AM ET Despite a blizzard, February auto sales should be higher than last year thanks to heavy advertising, a blitz of new products and the continued strength of Asian automakers, industry analysts said Friday. Several Wall Street analysts predicted U.S. sales will be up between 1 percent and 3 percent over last February when automakers report sales Wednesday. General Motors Corp. could be among the biggest beneficiaries after piquing customers' interest with advertising during the Super Bowl and the Olympics, Goldman Sachs auto analyst Robert Barry said in a note to investors. …

The United Auto Workers on Tuesday filed a scathing objection to Delphi Corp.'s proposal in U.S. Bankruptcy Court to reward its executive team with bonuses and stock potentially worth more than $500 million. In its filing, the UAW called Delphi's executive compensation program "grossly excessive" and said it would impede the union from reaching agreement with the bankrupt auto supplier on wage and job cuts for hourly workers. The UAW's objection, along with a similar filing by the United Steelworkers of America, set the stage for a battle on the compensation package at a Nov. 29 court hearing in New York. At issue is whether Delphi w…

Before debuting the hotly anticipated Apple Watch and the newest Macbook Air, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced at the 'Spring Forward' event today that 40 car models in 2015 will feature Carplay software for hands-free vehicle interaction. Carplay - and its Google competitor Android Auto - promise advanced features that natively integrate into the two largest smartphone operating systems. It's believed that certain automakers worry that Apple and Google will usurp their own branded infotainment systems, creating a homogenous experience regardless of automaker. Ariel is a very crazy company. Founded in 1902 as motorcycle manufacturer in Great Britain, the name was resurrected some years back to produce some of maddest street-legal track cars called the Atom. Think motorized scaffolding and you come close to what Ariel builds. The past couple of years have seen the company expand to building motorcycles. Now the company is now taking on the off-road buggy with the Nomad. The Nomad follows the same minimalistic approach as the Atom with a visible tubular steel frame - that is laser-cut, CNC-machined, bronze-welded, and phosphate and powder-coated - , an engine mounted in the back, and a bare bones interior. Where the Nomad differ…

Politician known for harsh motorist laws arrested in brutal hit-and-run death Former Ontario, Canada Attorney General Michael Bryant made a name for himself as a tough-nosed lawmaker that took a hard line against street racing. Among Bryant's hard stance anti-racer policies was a law that gave the police the right to crush any car that was modified for racing – even if the vehicle had no complaints against it. If a report from The New York Times is true, Mr. Bryant could ironically spend the rest of his life behind bars for a brutal hit-and-run accident involving a bicyclist. The incident reportedly began as a minor event and quickly escalated. Bryant allegedly br…

After years of fighting fuel economy and emissions rules at both the federal and state levels, the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers is finally coming out in favor of the new regulatory framework that will be announced by President Obama tomorrow. The biggest sticking point in recent years has been the move to block California and other states from effectively setting their own fuel economy standards by regulating greenhouse gas emissions. Tomorrow the president is expected to announce new federal rules that will effectively bring CAFE up to the same standard as California's proposal. Because the new rules will retain the footprint based standards from both the Calif…

Auto-Sales Optimism Fades DETROIT—Just a few months ago, optimism was rising in the auto industry that new-vehicle sales would make a strong rebound this year after falling to historic lows in 2009. New data, however, suggest the recovery isn't as strong as it appeared earlier in the year. The increase in auto sales in the first five months of 2010 has been driven by higher sales to rental-car companies and other commercial fleets—not sales to consumers, who are now showing signs of more pessimism about the economy, as well as a halting interest in buying new cars. "The industry is on the mend but there are reasons for caution," said John Hoffecker, a managing directo…

Over at Autoblog, the reception of the Lincoln Continental was as controversial and hotly debated as it was here at C&G. Some editors felt there was room for the handsome--albeit sedate--flagship sedan in the market and Lincoln will only move forward from here, while others felt that Ford fell far short of creating the halo vehicle it needs and made a number of key mistakes that will seal its fate. Lots of interesting points from folks who know the industry. "The Lincoln Continental may have been our fifth-place pick for Best In Show at this year's Detroit Auto Show, but it's probably the one we argued about the most. In fact, we're still talking about it. And…

I've been saying this for three years! The traditional monthly car magazines are dead - they just don't know it yet. Detroit. If you were to look at the balance sheets of the leading car magazines right now, you would be absolutely stunned at the staggering amounts of revenue they generate every year. Legendary money machines, these magazines make hundreds of millions of dollars annually for the corporate behemoths that lord over them with an iron fist. And if you look at the Big Picture only from those companies' perspective, then the good times seemingly will go on forever. But there are deep and growing cracks in the facade of these money machines - and these fissur…

Automakers back single crash rating Automakers on Wednesday offered support for a Bush administration proposal to overhaul the government's crash test program for new vehicles and create a single safety ranking. The major problem with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration program is that nearly all vehicles pass current tests, making it difficult for consumers to differentiate between vehicles. NHTSA wants to toughen the voluntary standards, some of which haven't been changed significantly since the program's creation in 1979, as well as reduce three crash ratings to one. At a public hearing Wednesday in Washington to hear experts' comments on the program,…

Automakers Urge U.S. to Emphasize Biofuels, Not CAFE (Update2) By Gopal Ratnam The best way to reduce oil imports and carbon dioxide emissions ``over the next decade is through increased use of bio-fuels,'' said Rick Wagoner, chief executive officer of Detroit-based General Motors Corp. AutoNation CEO Wants Greater Gas Taxes "We have to do something to favor the new technologies and send a message to American consumers that gasoline prices are going to be systematically higher," he said. "A gas tax is a statement from the government that this is an issue of national security and we're going to do something about it." It's ALL been tried before; I'm convinced there is no new automotive tech concept that hasn't either been tried or researched, not in the last 25 years. That said, I'm going to toss up a few other industry autonomous experiments up later today, as food for thought.

BASF acquires site for North American battery materials and recycling expansion in Canada BASF, a major chemical company out of Germany has acquired a major site in Canada for battery production and recycling. The note of interest is that the site will start construction and battery production once ready but will be an ongoing construction as the site will be able to handle 100 kt of battery production. The key interest in how big this site is that Tesla has their biggest battery site in Arizona which can produce 50 megawatts of batteries per year or equal to about 500,000 Tesla 3 auto's. 100 kt is the acronym for kilotons and when converted into the more f…

We have had lots of talk about the various BEVs or battery electric vehicles coming and occasionally a few posts on battery tech. Some have been in depth while others have been a 60,000-foot skim on new battery technology that looked and sounds cool. I thought it was about time we took a closer look on what all is going on in the auto battery world. First let's have a visual understanding on conventional Lithium-ion battery versus solid-state battery. A few key benefits are not only safer batteries, but smaller, slimer batteries that are more energy dense in nature due to a liquid electrolyte being replaced by some form of solid electrolyte. Cu…

Essentially... instead of carrying huge batteries on-board, cars will be directly powered by the grid. An electric vehicle would pick up power from underground power lines through the non-contact magnetic charging. Pretty cool idea, IMO.

I am intrigued with the opportunities that Uber drivers have. Although i don't have the time to consider driving part time, I suggested it to my nephew who is between jobs at the moment, and loves driving. But he has Charger RT, and I don't think it would make sense to be driving a V8 car around the city. So then I started thinking about what makes a good Uber vehicle to use as a driver. Immediately something efficient comes to mind, but also roomy. You may have to fit several people more than you thought. Trunk space is important too. A hybrid comes to mind, but maybe a bit extreme. It seems a mid sized car with a 4 cylinder engine is perfect. thoughts..…

Other companies have been experimenting with similar programs, which is causing concern about how much privacy drivers may unwittingly give up in exchange for savings. The only information OnStar would share with GMAC insurance, both companies said, would be the number of miles driven each month. GMAC would use that information to help it calculate risk. Drivers must enroll in the OnStar Vehicle Diagnostics service to get the discount. The biggest …

Detroit's Big Three automakers saw June sales drop between 12 and 13 percent as buyers pulled back from the previous month, suggesting that the hot May sales may have been an aberration. So automakers on Thursday were touting their year-over-year June sales numbers, which compared favorably with 2009's depressed figures. Hyundai was the world's only major automaker to buck the downward trend, reporting a 4 percent June sales increase from May and a 35 percent jump compared with June 2009. Autodata said the June numbers indicate that 11.1 million new vehicles will be sold this year, slightly ahead of last year's figure of 10.4 million new vehicles sold. Embattled …

Daniel Howes Big Three can't play defense anymore Sen. Barack Obama's finger-wagging lecture this week to Detroit's automakers shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who's paying attention. It's the future if maligned Motown doesn't start playing aggressive offense. Doesn't matter that an Illinois Democrat from the industrial Midwest, a man who would be president, shows scant understanding of the technology, market realities and human limitations of his remedies -- and then jumps on the campaign plane. It's the formula: Whack Detroit, ignore details and draw praise from most any corner outside of, say, three Great Lakes cities, meaning Obama understands very well the …

Bloomberg reported back in June 2019 that GM was looking at bringing back Hummer to the portfolio. President Mark Reuss is on record as saying he loves the Hummer! GM at the time was touting the BEV3 electric platform that will support 20 EVs on the road globally by 2023. Reuss also at the time said that the GMC Denali line and AT4 off-road trucks could all be potentially offered with electric powertrains. GM bought the Hummer brand in 1998, peaked sales in 2006 at 71,524 auto's and was down to 4,000 sold in 2010 as they kille…

Black Box Brouhaha A new federal rule to standardize minimum requirements for "black boxes" in vehicles wasn't expected to be controversial, but it has ignited a firestorm of protests from groups that largely agree the information collected by the devices improves auto safety. All U.S. and foreign automakers have asked the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to rewrite the rule because they say it's too vague and will cost too much to implement. Safety advocates say it doesn't go far enough. Read "Black boxes spark uproar" @ The Detroit News

The Great California Black Car Crisis is over — for now at least. The California Air Resources Board said Friday that it has no plans “at this time” to regulate car paint as part of a plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions — and never intended to outlaw black cars in the first place. “We are by no means interested in banning or restricting car colors,” CARB spokesman Stanley Young said. Reports that regulators were planning to banish black cars from the Golden State in an effort to reduce air pollution created a global uproar, perhaps best expressed in this headline from Rush Limbaugh’s website: “Tyrants Want to Ban Black Cars.” The purported black car ban was sa…

Bob Lutz to Retire at the End of 2009 GM today announced that Bob Lutz will step down at the end of 2009. Starting April 1st, he will transfer into a new role as Vice Chairman and Senior Adviser. His replacement, at least for the time being, will be Thomas Stephens, who is currently serving as GM’s Executive Vice President, Global Powertrain and Global Quality. We at C&G wish to thank Mr. Lutz for all he as done for GM. Nearly all that is positive about GM these days is somehow his doing. The new Malibu, the LaCrosse, the Kappa cars, the Volt, the Camaro - all his. His quotes kept us energized and entertained. Bob, you will be missed.

When a modern car, costing in the 6-figure range, uses 'old-school' body hardware or construction methods, I get severely affronted. Case in point: This is the console area of a Ferrari 360, offered from 1999-2004. The MSRP in '04 was $151K. I immediately take note of the common Phillips head screws holding down that shift plate- not countersunk, and from the inconsistent finish; they look like hardware store quality in finish. They also should be indexed. What would be far more fitting of the price range would be less-common, fully polished fasteners, such as button head screws in a slightly countersunk hole, or flush-mounted flathead hex sockets : Would look a …

BorgWarner Slashing North American Jobs U.S. automakers' production cuts are rippling through the supplier industry, with BorgWarner Inc. saying Friday that it is eliminating 13 percent of its North American work force and Lear Corp. earlier this week cutting its sales forecast by $300 million. Suppliers that do a heavy business with General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and DaimlerChrysler AG's U.S.-based Chrysler Group are sharing their customers' pain, an analyst says. Article Quotes: The U.S. auto industry is on a roll by most accounts, with industry volume sizzling and profits riding high on a SUV and pickup-truck boom. There is a weak spot, however. Retail demand for bread-and-butter passenger cars, such as the Toyota Camry and Chevrolet Cruze, has softened amid lower gasoline prices. This is leading high-volume auto makers to send more of these types of cars to rental car fleets, a practice that keeps production lines humming but can dent resale values and clip margins. About 21% of the compact cars and 20% of the midsize cars sold during the first quarter ended up in daily rental fleets, up from about 17% in the same p…

Camless Engines Here's Autoweek's Article Well, This may be the next big thing in engines technology. Overhead Valves became the new standard over L-head valves during the 1950s. Overhead cams became the standard in the 1980s over Overhead valves. It appears Overhead Actuators will likely become the new standard for engines in the 2010s over the current overhead cam engines.
