Last month, Porsche unveiled the Taycan Turbo and Turbo S, the two top trims of the Taycan, priced starting around $155,000. Now, Porsche is debuting the Taycan 4S, a new lower price model.
The Taycan 4S comes with a single-layer performance battery with 79.2 kWh as standard, the two-layer performance battery plus from the Taycan Turbo is available as an option. Regardless of which battery is chosen, the Taycan can accelerate to 60 in as little as 3.8 seconds. As of yet, range estimates for the U.S. have not been published, but assume somewhere north of 250 miles on the performance plus battery.
All-wheel drive is standard on the 4S, with a dual motor setup and a 2-speed transmission on the rear motor, the overall motor package is smaller and lighter than in the Turbo and Turbo S.
The Taycan can charge at up to 800 volts at a high-speed DC charging station. That can bring the charge from 5% to 80% in as little as 22.5 minutes. Porsche has partnered with Amazon to have 240 volt home chargers installed at customer's homes for an additional charge.
The Taycan 4S will start at $103,800 for the base model and $110,380 for the model with the performance plus battery.

...After 4 years of Mission E, we get the real thing...
After four years of watching Porsche's Mission E concept go through the stages to production, the final product has finally arrived in the Porsche Taycan. In doing so, Porsche has its sights set directly on Telsa.
At launch, the Taycan will be available only in the top trims of Taycan Turbo and Turbo S. Being fully electric, neither of them actually has a turbo of course. Packing a 93.4 kWh battery pack in its floor, the Taycan has a lower center of gravity than a Porsche 911. The top-line Turbo S can generate up to 750 horsepower with overboost mode engage and that will get the 5,100 lb car from 0 to 60 in 2.6 seconds. The standard Turbo makes do with 670 horsepower and a 0 to 60 of 3.0 seconds. Top track speed is limited to 161 mph for both. The Taycan is AWD using a dual motor system with one motor at each axle. Unlike EVs from Tesla and Nissan, Porsche uses a two-speed transmission to gain maximum acceleration and easy highway cruising.
The Taycan is the first production EV with an 800 volt system instead of the more common 400 volts for other electric cars. With the fastest charging available on the market, the Taycan can recharge from 5% to 80% in just 22.5 minutes under ideal conditions when connected to a 270 kW charger that will be found at all Porsche dealerships. Home chargers will use a more common 9.6 kW charger. Higher speed charging using Electrify America's network is available for free for the first 3 years. While EPA ratings for range have yet to be released, the Turbo is rated for 236 miles to 279 miles on the EU cycle and the Turbo S is rated for 236 miles to 256 miles on the same cycle. Assume somewhere in the mid-250s once the EPA gets their hands on one.
While the Taycan does get a traditional hydraulic braking system, Porsche says that the regenerative system can handle 90 percent of all braking. A standard adaptive air suspension is also there with Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control.
On the interior Porsche mounted 5 screens that surround the front occupants with tech. Up front is a 2.8 cubic foot glove box storage space, and out back is a bit more roomy 12.9 cubic foot storage. Porsche put indents into the floor for rear passengers to give more legroom.
The Taycan is expected to go on sales towards the end of this year. Launch pricing is $154,660 for the Turbo and the Turbo S starts at $186,350. Cheaper models will come later.
The Porsche Taycan, which is due to be officially revealed next week, got some track time with a reporter from Autocar. The Taycan will be Porsche's offering to compete with the Tesla Model S, and like the Model S will come in a variety of flavors. No matter which Taycan chosen, it will come with a 90 kWh battery pack capable of recharging up to 60 miles of range in just 4 minutes and free high speed charging for the first 3 years.
On the faster of the Taycan flavors, there will be an overboost option that will hold for two and a half seconds that boost the horsepower to "well over" 700 hp and over 750 lb-ft of torque. That power will rocket the Taycan from 0-62 mph somewhere under 3 seconds.
For those who miss the sounds of a car, the Taycan will offer something new. It will electronically enhance the sound of the electric motors' whine and pump it into the cabin.
Base price for the Taycan will be around the $75,000 mark, but expect the model with the overboost to be substantially more.
...Already 10,000 more than the initial planned figure...
It hasn't even been officially unveiled yet, but the Porsche Taycan has already secured more than 30,000 pre-orders, 10,000 more than the initial estimates. Porsche initially set production at 20,000 per year but later raised it to 40,000 per year. The extra €2,500 deposits support this raise in production. Porsche has been recruiting for 1,500 new positions to support the manufacturing process. If Porsche does sell 40,000 Taycans in the first year, it will eclipse Porsche's famous 911 in sales.
The Taycan is Porsche's EV rival to the Tesla Model S. Porsche is installing fast chargers at all of its dealerships in the U.S. and Europe that can add 62 miles of range in just 4 minutes. The Taycan's total range is around 310 miles. In addition, the first 3 years of charging will be free at Electrify America charging stations.
The Taycan's starting price is expected to be arount $90,000.
Porsche showed the Cayenne Coupe at an event in Stuttgart yesterday. The Cayenne Coupe is a more athletic version of the Cayenne SUV already on sale. The more steep roofline tumbles to the rear in an elegant fashion. An adaptive roof spoiler as on the Cayenne Turbo helps with aerodynamic stability at higher speeds. The spoiler extends by 135 mm (5.3 in) at speeds over 90 km/h. In addition to increasing rear axle pressure, the spoiler improves fuel efficiency.
Standard on the Cayenne Coupe is a panoramic fixed glass roof, but buyers can also option a lightweight carbon roof as part of one of three lightweight sport packages. The roof edge of the coupe has been lowered by 20 mm. On the glass roof versions, an integrated roller blind helps to protect passengers from sun and cold.
Two engine options will be available at launch. A 6-cylinder 3.0 liter turbocharged engine with 335 hp and 331 lb-ft of torque is standard while a Cayenne Coupe Turbo gets a 4 liter twin-turbo V8 with 541 hp and 568 lb-ft of torque. Top speed on the Turbo is 286 km/h (178 mph) and acceleration to 62 mph happens in just 3.9 seconds.
Partnering with Electrify America to provide service.
Porsche announced this morning that buyers of the forthcoming Taycan will have free charging with Electrify America included for the first three years they own the vehicle. The plan includes 30 minutes of free DC fast charging at any of 484 locations across 42 states.
Every Electrify America station will have at least two 350 kW chargers with additional chargers at the 150 kW level. Electrify America has been building a national network of charging stations in metro areas and along major national highways. The average highway distance between chargers will be about 70 miles with no more than 120 miles between charging stations. 17 metro areas will have stations with 5 to 10 chargers each.
The Taycan features one of the fastest charging rates using 800 volt technology to add more than 60 miles of range in just 4 minutes through its Combined Charging System (CCS) plug. In addition to the Electrify America network, all of Porsche's 191 dealerships will have DC fast charging stations installed. Of these, around 120 of these will feature the Porsche Turbo Charging, a proprietary 320kW system that also uses the CCS plug.
To supplement the national charging network, Porsche will be releasing a Porsche designed at-home charging system with details to follow soon.
Porsche has been hemming and hawing on whether or not to move forward with hybridizing the 911. Previously, Porsche said they would be bringing out a hybrid option for the 911 in 2022. But now, Porsche is putting those plans on hold until battery technology gets to a point where they see it as beneficial for the model.
“Today the battery technology wouldn’t be satisfying for us, and if it doesn’t satisfy us then we won’t offer it. It doesn’t make sense to offer a hybrid version which will just stay in the showroom, ” said August Achleitner, product-line director for the 911.
“It will be the next evolution of this car, that means at least four years from today.”
Some of the key issues deal with the additional weight that would come from adding a hybrid system, along with making sure the hybrid powertrain is able to help with overall performance.

There is talk about Porsche possibly offering two hybrid variants of 911 - a middle of the range model to serve as an alternative to the Carrera and one to serve as the performance flagship, something akin to the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid.

Could be looking at a pricetag around the $75,000 mark
We've been wondering how much the upcoming Porsche Taycan EV will set you back. Considering the slick looks and amount of technology Porsche is planning for this, we're expecting a high price tag. But Automotive News reports that the Taycan will not be too expensive.
“We’re expecting a price somewhere between a Cayenne and a Panamera,” said Robert Meier, the Taycan's model line director.
For the European market, that means a possible starting price of above 80,000 euros (about $92,500). In the U.S., we could be seeing a base price of $75,500 - that's taking into consideration the base prices of the Cayenne ($65,700) and Panamera ($85,500). Please note this is not set in stone and we expect Porsche to provide pricing sometime later this or early next year.

Porsche announced two new short-term loan programs that will launch as pilots in the United States: Porsche Drive and Porsche Host.
Porsche Drive could be described as "Diet Porsche Passport". Subscribers will be able to reserve a Porsche model from four hours to a full week. After making their selection, a white-glove delivery service will drop off the Porsche vehicle within two hours in the Metro Atlanta area - where the pilot will take place. Pricing will range from $269 for four hours with a Macan or a 718 Cayman or Boxster; to $2,909 for a week-long rental of a 911. Prices don't include taxes and fees.
Porsche Host is a partnership between the company and peer-to-peer car sharing service Turo. Host uses Porsche-approved and trained Turo hosts to offer users a "five-star Porsche experience". Vehicles are owned by the hosts and users have the option of renting the vehicle for day to over a month. The program will be launched in Los Angeles and San Francisco next month.

Porsche Launches New Short-Term Access Pilots ‘Drive’ and ‘Host’ in U.S.
Drive a Porsche for a day to a week or longer with rental or peer-to-peer models
Atlanta, Georgia. Porsche is unveiling two pilot programs on the U.S. East and West Coasts to give drivers short-term, on-demand access to Porsche sports cars.

(PCNA). “Our market research shows that consumers want options across a spectrum from access to ownership. The Porsche Drive and Porsche Host pilots are exciting, non-traditional ways to let customers choose how they get behind the wheel of a Porsche.”
PCNA is following up on its monthly subscription plan, Porsche Passport, with a short-term rental pilot called Porsche Drive. The program, powered by Clutch Technologies LLC (Clutch), offers a wide range of new Porsche models for periods from a few hours to a week. It launched this week in Atlanta.
Porsche Drive includes white-glove concierge delivery service. Once a reservation is confirmed, the vehicle will be delivered within two hours to the customer's requested location in metro Atlanta. The service features hourly (four-hour minimum), daily, and weekly usage options for current model cars from all six Porsche model lines, including the iconic 911. Access to specific model variants will depend upon availability.
Prices for Porsche Drive run from $269 (+ taxes and fees) for four hours in a Macan or 718 Cayman or Boxster, to $2,909 (+ taxes and fees) for weekly usage of a 911. Clutch will manage customer interaction as well as the end-to-end service delivery for Porsche Drive. A second short-term program, Porsche Host, is a peer-to-peer pilot developed by Porsche Digital, Inc. with car-sharing marketplace provider Turo. The Porsche Host program will be available in Los Angeles and San Francisco via the Turo platform. Porsche cars in the program are owned by Turo hosts.
The Porsche Host program will launch October 8 in Los Angeles and San Francisco. The program includes a group of outstanding Turo hosts who have been trained to offer a five-star Porsche experience. Guests can book a Porsche from a Porsche Host via the Turo app or website, for periods ranging from one day to a month or longer.
Porsche has been hard at work on their first electric vehicle, the Taycan (formally known as Mission E). With just under a a year to go before Porsche unveils the final product, the German automaker decided to release some technical information.
Beginning with the powertrain, the Taycan will use two permanently synchronous motors (one mounted on each axle). This will produce a combined output of 600-plus horsepower. Porsche claims a 0-100 kph (0-62 mph) time of under 3.5 seconds. The large lithium-ion battery pack provides overall range of 600 kilometers (about 310 miles). When the battery does become depleted, it will only take 15 minutes for an 80 percent charge when plugged into an 800-volt charger. The Taycan will also support 400V chargers, though Porsche hasn't revealed how long it will take for a recharge.
Porsche is looking to build 20,000 Taycans per year at their Zuffenhausen facility in Germany when production kicks off next year.
There have been rumors for the past few years of Porsche building a coupe-like version of the Cayenne. Those rumors are coming to fruition as Autocar reports that the Cayenne Coupe has been given the green light.
Porsche CEO Oliver Blume has given the go-ahead on the project which is expected to launch in the fourth quarter of next year. Like key competitors such as the BMW X6 and Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe, the Cayenne Coupe will adopt of a liftback tailgate. Other design changes include a taillight shape and rear side windows. The model will be positioned as a performance model, which likely means no 3.0L turbocharged V6 from the base Cayenne. Instead, expect to find the twin-turbo 2.9L V6 and twin-turbo 4.0L V8.
Porsche has been calling their upcoming electric sedan the Mission E since the launch of the concept. But when the production model arrives next year, it will be wearing a new name.
Yesterday, Porsche announced the model would be called Taycan (pronounced Tie-con). Loosely translated, the name means "lively young horse." A somewhat fitting name when you take a look at the Porsche emblem and there is a leaping horse.
“Our new electric sports car is strong and dependable; it’s a vehicle that can consistently cover long distances and that epitomizes freedom," said said Porsche Chairman Oliver Blume.
Porsche is still keeping tight lipped on specifics for the Taycan. The automaker has said previously that the model would use two electric motors to produce a total output of 600 horsepower. Back in December, we reported that there could be three power outputs ranging from 402 to 670 horsepower.

In preparation, the vehicle previously operating under the working title "Mission E” has now been given its official name: Taycan. The name can be roughly translated as “lively young horse,” referencing the imagery at the heart of the Porsche crest, which has featured a leaping steed since 1952. “Our new electric sports car is strong and dependable; it’s a vehicle that can consistently cover long distances and that epitomizes freedom,” Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG, explains. The Eurasian name also signifies the launch of the first electric sports car with the soul of a Porsche. Porsche announced the name for its first purely electric model as part of the “70 years of Porsche Sports Cars” ceremony.
Two permanently activated synchronous motors (PSM) generating a system output of over 600 horsepower accelerate the electric sports car to 60 miles per hour in well under 3.5 seconds and to 124 miles per hour (200 km/h) on the track in less than twelve seconds. The Porsche Taycan will also offer a consistent level of power that is unprecedented among electric vehicles: multiple launches in a row will be possible without a loss in performance, and the vehicle’s maximum range will be over 300 miles as measured in accordance with the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC).
Names with meaning
At Porsche, the vehicle names generally have a concrete connection with the corresponding model and its characteristics. The name “Boxster” describes the combination of the boxer engine and the roadster design; Cayenne denotes fieriness; the Cayman is sharp and agile; and the Panamera, inspired by the Carrera Panamericana long-distance race, offers more than any standard sedan. The name Macan is derived from the Indonesian word for tiger, with connotations of suppleness, power, fascination, and dynamics.
Future investment doubled
Porsche plans to invest more than six billion Euros in electromobility by 2022, doubling the investment that the company had originally planned. Of the additional three billion Euros, some 500 million Euros will be used for the development of Taycan variants and derivatives, around one billion Euros for electrification and hybridization of the existing product range, several hundred million for the expansion of production sites, and around 700 million Euros for new technologies, charging infrastructure, and smart mobility.
Extensive construction and expansion at the Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen headquarters
At the Porsche headquarters in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, a new paint shop, dedicated assembly area for the Taycan, and a conveyor bridge for transporting the painted bodies and drive units to the final assembly area all are currently being built. The existing engine plant is being expanded to manufacture electric motors, and a new body shop will also be developed. Investments are also planned for the Weissach Development Center. Production of the Taycan is creating around 1,200 new jobs in Zuffenhausen alone.
Porsche continues its slow rollout of new Cayenne models with the introduction of the new E-Hybrid variant.
Taking the turbocharged 3.0L V6 found in the base Cayenne, Porsche teams it up with an electric motor producing with 134 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Total output is rated at 455 horsepower and 516 pound-feet. This is paired with an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. The run to 60 mph takes 4.7 seconds, about 0.2 seconds quicker than the twin-turbo V6 Cayenne S. Keep the accelerator pinned and the E-Hybrid will reach a top speed of 157 mph.
Porsche has fitted a larger 14.1 kWh battery pack into the E-Hybrid. This allows the model to travel 44 kilometers (about 27 miles) according to NEDC testing. Expect the range to be slightly lower in EPA ratings. A 3.6-kW on-board charger comes standard and can fully recharge the battery in 7.8 hours when plugged into a 230V connection. The optional 7.2 kW onboard charger drops the recharge time to 2.3 hours when plugged into a 230V connection.
There are four drive modes that are exclusive to the Cayenne E-Hybrid
E-Power: Runs on electric power only until the battery is depleted
E-Hold: Keeps the current state of the battery's charge intact until the driver decides to use it
E-Charge: Gas engine produces more power to help charge the battery
Hybrid Auto: Combines various amounts of gas and electric power to maximize efficiency
The only differences between the Cayenne E-Hybrid and regular Cayenne are the E-Hybrid badges, an extra door for the charging point, and Acid Green brake calipers.
It will be awhile before the Cayenne E-Hybrid arrives in the U.S. Porsche says the model will arrive early next year with a base price of $80,950 - includes a $1,050 destination charge.

Premiering today, the 2019 Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid solidifies its place in the lineup while making significant advancements over both the standard Cayenne and the preceding Cayenne S E-Hybrid it replaces. Those advantages include more power, quicker acceleration, a faster top speed, and increased electric-only range. The Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid uses the same three-liter mono-turbo V6 as the Cayenne, but significantly increases total horsepower and torque by integrating an electric motor.
The latest Porsche “E-performance” model adopts the same hybrid boost strategy as the 918 Spyder super sports car. By leveraging the instantaneous torque of the electric motor and the power of a turbocharged V6 gasoline engine, the Cayenne E-Hybrid has an especially broad power band that improves its acceleration capability. In addition to enhanced performance, the new 2019 Cayenne E-Hybrid also adds the Sport Chrono Package, Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), and Auxiliary Cabin Conditioning to its list of standard equipment.
In conjunction with the launch of the 2019 Cayenne E-Hybrid, Porsche will also introduce several new features to the broader Cayenne model line. They include massaging seats, a heated windshield, a head-up display, and for the first time in any Porsche, 22-inch wheels.
Aesthetic changes specific to the Cayenne E-Hybrid are aligned with other current Porsche plug-in hybrid models. The visual distinctions are Acid Green brake calipers and matching outlines around all of the badges.
Newest Porsche PHEV Powertrain
The latest Porsche plug-in hybrid includes the third new hybrid powertrain from Porsche since 2017. It combines a three-liter mono-turbo V6 engine with 335 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque with an electric motor that creates 134 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The result is a total system output of 455 horsepower from 5,250 to 6,400 RPM and 516 lb-ft of torque from 1,000 to 3,750 RPM. Acceleration from zero to 60 MPH happens in 4.7 seconds (-0.7 seconds vs. Cayenne S E-Hybrid) on to a ¼ mile time of 13.3 seconds (-0.9 seconds vs. Cayenne S E-Hybrid) and a top track speed of 157 MPH (+6 MPH vs. Cayenne S E-Hybrid).
Tiptronic S transmission and new hybrid module
Porsche completely re-engineered the hybrid powertrain componentry at work in the Cayenne E-Hybrid as compared to the Cayenne S E-Hybrid of the previous generation. The hybrid module, which is positioned between the engine and eight-speed Tiptronic S transmission, consists of an electric motor and a separating clutch. In contrast to the previous electro-hydraulic system with a spindle actuator, the separating clutch is operated electromechanically for quicker reaction times. The new Tiptronic S transmission, which was developed for the third-generation Cayenne range, offers significantly faster, smoother, and more comfortable shifts. This also leads to a reduced interruption of tractive force while changing gears. As with other Cayenne models, the top track speed is reached in sixth gear, leaving the remaining two gears intentionally long for efficient cruising.
Standard Porsche Traction Management all-wheel drive
With standard Porsche Traction Management (PTM), the Cayenne E-Hybrid has an active hang-on all-wheel drive system with an electronically regulated, map-controlled multiplate clutch. With its broad range of torque distribution, the system offers clear benefits in terms of driving dynamics, agility, traction control and off-road capabilities. Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) is included as standard equipment, though customers may upgrade to the same three-chamber air suspension system that is offered in the rest of the Cayenne lineup.
Drive Modes in Detail
As with other Porsche E-performance models, the Cayenne E-Hybrid shares a boost strategy with the 918 Spyder. By offering a wide range of drive modes, the powertrain is able to meet a wide range of specific needs ranging from all-electric motoring to high performance driving.
The Sport Chrono Package, including a mode switch integrated into the steering wheel, forms part of the standard equipment on the Cayenne E-Hybrid. The mode switch and the Porsche Communication Management system are used to select the various driving modes. These include the familiar “Sport” and “Sport Plus” modes from the other Cayenne models equipped with the Sport Chrono Package, while the Cayenne E-Hybrid also adds four hybrid-specific modes: “E-Power”, “Hybrid Auto”, “E-Hold” and “E-Charge”.
E-Power: In “E-Power” mode, the Cayenne E-Hybrid drives up to 44 kilometers, based on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), on electricity alone.
Hybrid Auto: The “Hybrid Auto” mode is a completely new development. When this mode is selected, the Cayenne changes and combines the drive sources automatically for ultimate efficiency.
E-Hold: The “E-Hold” mode allows drivers to conserve the current state of charge so they can later switch to electric (and therefore zero-emissions) mode in an environmental zone at their destination, for example.
E-Charge: In “E-Charge” mode, the gasoline engine generates more power than is needed to move the car. The excess energy is channeled into the battery for later use.
Sport and Sport Plus: The highest level of drive performance is made available in the “Sport” and “Sport Plus” modes. The V6 is active continuously in these modes. In “Sport” mode, the battery charge is always maintained at a minimum level to ensure that sufficient boost reserve capacity is available when needed. “Sport Plus” mode is all about maximum performance. In addition, the battery is charged as quickly as possible to ensure maximum performance.
Battery power: plugging in and taking off
Power is stored in a 14.1 kWh battery pack housed in the rear of the chassis beneath the load floor. While running on electricity alone, the Cayenne E-Hybrid can travel up to 83 miles per hour and up to 44 kilometers (NEDC). EPA fuel economy figures and electric range are unannounced at this time.
Battery capacity of the Cayenne E-Hybrid increases by roughly 30 percent to 14.1 kWh when compared to the preceding model. The liquid-cooled battery consists of eight modules with 13 prismatic lithium ion cells each. The packaging size of this battery pack is the same as the battery used in the previous Cayenne S E-Hybrid, but it has improved energy density.
Using a 230-volt, 32 amp connection and the optional 7.2 kW onboard charger, it is possible to recharge a fully depleted battery in 2.3 hours. Using a 230-volt connection with 10 amps and the standard 3.6 kW on-board charger, replenishing a fully depleted battery requires 7.8 hours. In both cases, the recharging process is quicker with the new Cayenne E-Hybrid than in prior models.
The charging process is controllable either via Porsche Communication Management (PCM) or remotely when using the Porsche Connect app. With an enabled smartphone, owners gain remote access to climate controls, and charge monitoring. All of these features are included as standard equipment and function even when the ignition switch is turned off. Porsche Connect can also be used to find and filter charging stations and set them as a navigation destination.
Mirroring the subtle aesthetic hybrid indicators on the exterior, the cabin features Acid Green needles on the Sport Chrono dial and the tachometer as well as hybrid-specific displays in the gauge cluster and within the PCM screen. The displays offer information about the state of charge, electricity consumption and hybrid-specific drive mode selections.
Porsche is offering a head-up display for the first time. The full-color projection is customizable, height-adjustable, and it puts key information including driving speed, engine speed, driving mode, and navigation information and the current drive mode within the driver’s direct line of sight.
Models equipped with the Sport Chrono package – such as the Cayenne E-Hybrid – can see information relevant to the added performance capability including lap times and cornering g forces. Models equipped with the Off Road package are able to display similarly relevant information including hillside gradients, steer angle, a compass, and hill descent control speeds.
Starting with the 2019 Cayenne E-Hybrid, Porsche InnoDrive will also be available. As a step beyond adaptive cruise control, this system combines already existent traffic sensing systems with onboard map data. The result is a vehicle that can “look” 1.8 miles ahead to select gearing intelligently, and that can compute when best to coast and the best balance between the gasoline and electric portions of the powertrain based on upcoming corners and changes in grade. The system is also capable of recognizing speed limits and adjusting vehicle velocity in cases where temporary speed restrictions are in place.
Market launch and pricing
The new Cayenne E-Hybrid is expected to begin arriving at U.S. dealers in early 2019 with a base MSRP of $79,900 excluding options and the $1,050 delivery, processing and handling fee.
It hasn't been a good week at Porsche. On Wednesday, German prosecutors raided around 10 facilities owned by Porsche as part of an investigation into three suspects over the diesel emission mess. Yesterday, the head of Porsche' powertrain development Joerg Kerner was placed under arrest by German police. A source tells Reuters that Kerner is being held because police believe his a flight risk.
Kerner was one of three suspects that prosecutors were targeting during their raids according to a spokesman from the Stuttgart public prosecutor’s office.
In a memo sent out by Porsche chief executive Oliver Blume, Kerner and the other two people are suspected of having knowledge that the engines developed by Audi had illegal cheat software. Blume would also confirm Kerner's arrest in the memo.
“We reject these allegations and will do our utmost to clear up the matter,” said Blume.
A Porsche spokesman declined to comment.
Another day, another raid by German prosecutors into Volkswagen's diesel emission scandal. Yesterday, 160 investigators conducted searches in about 10 premises in Bavaria and Baden-Wuerttemberg owned by Porsche. Prosecutors said in a statement to Reuters the raids are part of an investigation into Porsche employees on charges of fraud and fraudulent advertising tied to the cheating software used on diesel engines.
“The three suspects include a member of the management board and a member of Porsche AG’s higher management. The third suspect is no longer employed at Porsche AG,” said prosecutors.
A Porsche spokesman confirmed the searches to Reuters, but declined to comment any further.
On the same day, two Audi sites were also searched according to Stuttgart prosecutors and an Audi spokesman. The searches relate to another investigation dealing with the diesel emission scandal.
The next-generation Porsche 911 will offer a plug-in hybrid variant and comments made the CEO hint it could be the most powerful 911 ever.
“The 911 plug-in must be a very strong performing car. It will be the most powerful 911 we’ve ever had; 700bhp might be possible," Porsche CEO Oliver Blume told Autocar.
It should be noted that Porsche already has a 911 that produces 700 horsepower, the GT2 RS. To pull this off, the plug-in hybrid needs a powerful electric motor. Luckily, they have one in the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid which produces 134 horsepower. The gas engine would likely be a turbocharged flat-six. Blume says there would be a button that provides "the electric punch".
The 911 plug-in would draw on knowledge from the 918 Spyder and Panamera hybrids, but also come with its own set of technologies.
The plug-in variant is expected to launch “a couple years” after the new 911. Considering the next-generation 992 will be debuting at the Paris Motor Show later this year, expect to see it either 2020 or 2021.
Just a week ago, we reported that Porsche was getting out of the diesel game as sales of the Macan S Diesel and Panamera 4S Diesel ended. But Porsche's sales chief f Detlev von Platen told Automotive the company is planning to launch a diesel engine for the new Cayenne and possibly offer it in the Macan.
"We're not saying that we are exiting [diesel]," said von Platen.
"Presently, the planning process foresees one for the Cayenne and probably for the Macan, too. For the SUV models, it [diesel] makes sense where customers want range and torque."
Von Planten also downplayed the importance of diesel to the brand.
"It was never extremely relevant. Only about 14 percent of the 246,000 cars we sell worldwide are a diesel. We see big demand for our plug-in hybrids, especially with the latest generation, now that its electric range was extended to 50 kilometers [up from 36km]. That plays a big role."
This apparent reversal comes as Germany's highest federal administrative court approved the ban of older diesel vehicles in the cities of cities of Duesseldorf and Stuttgart - the latter being home to Porsche. While it will not affect newer diesels, it only gives the fuel another black eye and will likely cause sales to fall further.

Nine years ago, Porsche introduced its first diesel-powered model, the Cayenne SUV. This was followed by diesel variants of the Panamera and Macan. But Porsche has now ended production of all diesel models.
According to Autocar, Porsche has ended sales of the Macan S Diesel and Panamera 4S Diesel. A Porsche spokesman said the move mirrors the “cultural shift” of the brand's customers. The spokesman also mentioned, “another software update” for the diesel engines that are part of “ongoing consultation with the authorities”, likely hinting at regulatory issues concerning the future of these engines.
The removal of diesel is no great loss to Porsche as a source tells Autocar the fuel only made up 15% of automaker’s total worldwide sales. Porsche's focus will now be on hybrids and the upcoming Mission E electric vehicle.
More details have to come to light about Porsche's upcoming Mission E EV thanks to a report from Automobile. They had the chance to drive a development mule and speak with executives about the vehicle.
We've heard previously that Porsche could be offering various power outputs for the Mission E and Automobile sheds more light on this. There could be three versions offering 300 kW (402 horsepower), 400 kW (536 horsepower) and 500 kW (670 horsepower). Power will come from two drive units on the front and rear axle. The front unit is said to develop 160 kW (215 horsepower) and 221 pound-feet of torque. The torque figure can be raised to 325 for short bursts. There will be two rear drive units producing either 240 kW (322 horsepower) and 251 pound-feet, or 320 kW (429 horsepower) and 406 pound-feet of torque.
A two-speed transmission is being developed and all models will have all-wheel drive, though there is talk about Porsche offering a lower-cost RWD version.
The Mission E will slot between 911 and the Panamera in the lineup. Interestingly, despite being smaller than the Panamera, the Mission E will have similar interior room thanks in part to the packing of the electric powertrain.
"The production version is in essence a C-segment sedan with an almost D-size interior. Visually, the car combines 911 overtones with fresh proportions and very good space utilization even though the Mission E is notably more compact than the Panamera," said project leader Stefan Weckbach.
Pricing is expected to begin at $75,000 to $80,000 when the Mission E arrives in 2019.
Finally! Some Clarification on the 911 Plug-In Hybrid
Porsche seems to be going ahead on electrifying their iconic 911 sports car. Speaking with Automotive News, Porsche CEO Oliver Blume revealed that the company is working on a plug-in hybrid variant of the next-generation 911.
"It will be very important for the 911 to have a plug-in hybrid," said Blume.
The decision on whether to move forward with the project hasn't received final approval, but Blume said it's "my opinion that we will go for it."
Blume's comments help clear the confusing mess of rumors from the past few years which said one minute that they were considering it and the next minute being taken off the table. Earlier this year, plans were dropped due to weight concerns of the batteries.
The next-generation 911's platform has been designed to accommodate the batteries needed for the plug-in hybrid system. Currently, Porsche is planning to launch the plug-in hybrid 911 during midcycle refresh of the next-generation 911. With the launch of the next-generation 911 expected to take place in 2019, this could mean the 911 plug-in hybrid will debut in 2023.
Why is Porsche waiting until the midcycle refresh? Blume said this would allow the company to get batteries that deliver more power and range.

New EU regulations have Porsche working on a second EV
With stricter CO2 emission regulations looming over the horizon from the European Union, Porsche is getting ready by launching a second electric vehicle to comply with them.
According to Automotive News Europe, the EU is proposing a 30 percent reduction in CO2 emissions for new car fleets by 2030 - less than 67 grams per kilometer under the current NEDC testing cycle. Half of that must be achieved by 2025 as part of a milestone.
Porsche's plan at the moment is to have more than half of its sales come from electrified vehicles, That includes the launch of the Mission EV and hybrid/plug-in hybrid vehicles.
"Technically we certainly won’t struggle with that [target]," said Porsche development chief Michael Steiner.
"The attractiveness [of Porsche's electrified lineup] should lead to a powertrain mix that ensures we are compliant."
Steiner also said that Porsche is working on a second EV, but it would not be a sports car.
"We're starting with a sporty four-door concept in the Mission E positioned between the 911 and the Panamera, so it's logical that we will look to balance our lineup with a product in a different segment such as an SUV."
As we reported back in June, Porsche CEO Oliver Blume said the company is working on two new electric SUVs. One is a coupe-SUV (think BMW X6/Mercedes GLE-Cass) and the other is the next-generation Macan which is expected to go full electric only.

The idea of Porsche doing a 911 hybrid has come and gone, and it seems to be coming once again.
Bloomberg has learned from sources at Porsche that they are considering a hybrid powertrain for their iconic sports car once again. If given the green light, it would appear a few years after the launch of the next-generation 911 (due sometime next year) and possibly offer up to 40 miles of electric-only range. A problem that engineers are working on is trying to cut down battery weight the handling characteristics the vehicle is known for.
It should be noted the Porsche has been going back and forth on this idea since 2014. Back in May, Porsche's head of development for the 718 and 911 said plans for 911 plug-in hybrid were canceled last year due to weight concerns and not being able to make much a profit as they would with a standard 911.
Porsche's GTS models bring forth additional performance along with some additional creature comforts. The latest models to get the GTS treatment are the 718 Boxster and Cayman.
The changes begin with the turbocharged 2.5L four-cylinder boxer engine which now features a new intake and revisions to the turbocharger. Output is rated at 365 horsepower and either 309 or 317 pound-feet of torque (depending on the transmission). A six-speed manual transmission is standard, while a seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission is optional. Porsche also fits their Active Suspension System and Porsche Torque Vectoring with a mechanical rear differential on the GTS.
Outside, the 718 GTS comes with a new front bumper, tinted headlights, 20-inch wheels with a black finish, black rear apron, and black badging. The interior gets Alcantara sport seats, an Alcantrara-wrapped steering wheel, and the Sport Chrono Package.
Porsche says the 718 Boxster and Cayman GTS are available for order with prices beginning at $80,850 for the Cayman and $82,950 for the Boxster. Prices include a $1,050 destination charge. Deliveries will begin in March.

More power, exclusive equipment
October 17, 2017, Atlanta, Georgia. Porsche is expanding the mid-engine 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman model lines with new GTS models. A newly developed intake plenum and an optimized turbocharger increases the output of the 2.5 liter flat-four cylinder engine to 365 horsepower. This is 15 horsepower more than on the 718 S models and up to 35 horsepower more compared to the previous generation of naturally aspirated Boxster and Cayman GTS variants. Like all 718 model variants, the new GTS derivatives come standard with a six-speed manual transmission. The seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) dual-clutch transmission is available to order as an option. A number of performance-enhancing options such as Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) including a mechanical rear-differential lock or the Sport Chrono Package are standard on the GTS models, as well as Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), which reduces the ride height by 0.39 inches (10 millimeters) compared to the standard suspension on other 718 Boxster and Cayman models.
Increased performance with more power
The maximum torque of up to 317 lb-ft (309 lb-ft on manual transmission models) is available across a broad power band from 1,900 to 5,000 rpm (1,900 to 5,500 rpm on manual transmission models) and further improves acceleration. When equipped with the optional PDK transmission both GTS models are capable of accelerating from zero to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds. The top track speed is 180 mph.
Characteristic GTS: black accents inside and out
The GTS models set themselves apart through distinct visual differences. The Sport Design front fascia underscores the performance of the car. Tinted front indicator lights and taillights, model designations in black, a black lower rear fascia, and black tips on the centrally mounted standard Sport Exhaust System make the GTS models stand out. Black GTS designations on the doors and matte black 20-inch wheels complete the particularly dynamic appearance.
Interior: Standard Alcantara® and Porsche Track Precision App
The interior is also pure GTS. The chronometer of the standard Sport Chrono Package is centrally mounted on the dashboard. The seat centers of the standard Sport Seats Plus are made of Alcantara®. Featuring an embroidered GTS logo on the headrests, they provide particularly high lateral support and comfort. The steering wheel rim, center console armrest, and door armrests are also made of Alcantara®. Subscription-access to a fleet of vehicles is starting to gain some traction. The latest automaker to join this bandwagon is Porsche.
Porsche Passport is pretty straightforward - put up a certain amount of cash up every month and you'll get access to a number of Porsche vehicles that will be dropped off you for as long as you want. There are two tiers to Passport. Launch gives you access to eight model variants of the 718 Boxster, 718 Cayman, Cayenne, and Macan for $2,000 per month. Accelerate bumps the price to $3,000 per month, but it expands the variants to 22, including the 911 and Panamera 4S.
To join, you'll need to pay a one-time $500 activation fee and download the Porsche Passport app. After a background and credit check, you'll be part of the program. The monthly fee includes tax, registration, maintenance, and detailing. There are no caps on mileage or swaps per month.
Porsche Passport will begin as a pilot program in the Atlanta area - home to Porsche's North America office - beginning in November. If the program proves to be successful, expect more markets to follow.

Just what Volkswagen needed, family members fighting
As if the Volkswagen Group needed more headaches, a new report says there's a bit of infighting between Audi and Porsche.
German tabloid Bild reports that Porsche is seeking 200 million Euros (about $234 million) from Audi to cover costs from the diesel emission scandal. Reportedly, Porsche management delivered this claim in a letter to their counterparts at Audi. Bild doesn't mention any source, so take this report with a fair amount of salt.
When reached for comment by Reuters, a Porsche spokesman said internal issues were not open for public discussion. An Audi spokesperson declined to comment.
This dispute stems from Audi admitting back in November 2015 that its 3.0L TDI V6 was fitted with a defeat device. One of those models using the V6 was the Porsche Cayenne.

I'm sure one could, but it would be a lot of work. I like vehicles that come with warranties, predictably start, have working A/C and don't require hours and hours of wrenching. Get in, drive, enjoy..I need another fun car..(I don't really want a Tesla, though, lots of ICE vehicles that are quite appealing to me).
If one happened to live in an area where they thought they could get away with ludicrous mode launches without getting nailed, I suppose. Seen plenty of videos of teslas on the drag strip, tho, but there they’re limited to what Tesla built. Drag racing a factory stock car always struck me as pointless.
Point of my answer was, you could build a markedly faster Model S if you went IC. If that was important to you.
Those aren't for real world use, though, right? ...stuff built for drag racing has no bearing on real world performance cars.
I don't think people are necessarily building drag racers out of a Model S..definitely too heavy for that use case..I'm talking about real world performance...a Model S in ludicrous mode is 2.4 sec 0 to 60, .that's very quick for a real car with a warranty, working A/C, cup holders and all the essentials...
I don't believe it's the motors as much as it is the batteries. Unfortunately for competition; the EV packages are the antithesis of competition - they are HEAVY. Model S is 5000 lbs and it's not really that quick. 100 lbs = 1/10th of a sec in the quarter mile.
Giving it more power/batteries just makes it heavier, not lighter.
