  3. ADELAIDE, Australia - An Australian farmer held hostage in Mali for 12 days by a gang of men who had posed as an online love interest has urged others to be careful when seeking romance on the Internet. Des Gregor, 56, traveled to the West African nation last month to meet his supposed bride, whom he had met on the Internet, and collect a dowry of gold bars worth $85,000. But when he arrived, the wheat and sheep farmer was abducted by a gang of armed bandits who bound him, beat him with a machete and stole his cash and credit cards. "In Retrospect's" mission is to bring you random bits of automotive related articles, automotive ads that have long since went out of print, and other auto junk pulled from over a decade of "Car & Driver" magazines. Well, here's a model of one and some cologne so you can inhale that new car scent all day long. (Oct. 1996): This is here because, …

I'll road trip to the greater St Louis MO area 4 times in 2009; even so, the quick trip I took down there the weekend of March 14 was not long enough. It never is when you are meeting people and "catching up".... Friday the 13th, I went to work for a few hours, came home, picked up the rental (a Dodge Charger, of course), finished packing and left town about 2:10p. I made a beeline for St Louis (via RT 64 W, I-39 S, I-55 S and I-64 W), hoping to arrive for the ValveReplacement Reunion Friday night dinner. I stopped once, at a Shell station in Raymond IL just off I-55. I noticed a "Route 66" historical marker ... so, I suspect I was on Route 66 a bit. Unfortunately,…

I was driving through the Nissan-Saturn dealer today to see if they had any SKYs (they didn't) and I notice this orange 350Z convert sitting there with a sticker in the window. It read "MSRP: $39,xxx Reduced: $38,xxx" and I had to do a double take to make sure it was actually $39k. I don't know what anyone else thinks, but I think that's pretty rediculous. I'd take a SKY Redline over that any day and pocket the extra $10k. Hell, that's almost as much as a base Corvette! (granted not a convert - but still).

If I were to get rid of the Riviera and no one wanted to buy it, would it be possible to put the interior into my Delta 88? The reason I'm think about this is because my favorite part of this generation Riviera is the dashboard and interior as a whole. It's retro enough to where it could work with an older car and yet modern enough to have the features I'm now used to. The comfy leather seats, the center console and arm rest. The dash and doors panels becoming "one" Besides the obvious needed measurements, what other challenges would lie ahead in trying to do this?

More info available at Green Car Report but to quote their story, the end result of what happens with the starter system on new auto's is as follows: What follows is his explanation of those technologies. (1) The gear ratio from the starter-drive pinion to the flywheel ring gear is optimized to make the starter's motor turn more slowly. This can be done without materially changing the design of the transmission or flywheel at all on existing designs. Crucially, this reduces starter-motor speed (in RPM), since 90 percent of starter-motor brush wear…

  71. Happy Mother’s Day everyone! We hope you’re all either with your moms, on your way there or plan to give them a call shortly. Whatever you end up doing today though, don’t do what this lady does when her parking space is stolen but an apparently clueless or careless driver of a Honda Element. See the full video here

  75. So when was the last time you saw the Blue Angels fly or Hydroplane boats race? This weekend, Seattle is having their Annual Hydroplane boat races on Lake washington and the Blue Angels show Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Temps are to be in the low to mid 80's with about 20% humidity. http://www.seafair.com/default.aspx?SecID=915 The blue angels are doing their practice runs right now so Seattle is a Sonic Boom zone. Having grown up here in Washington, I cannot ever imagen summer without the boat races and the blue angels. I loved the roar of the piston powered Hydroplane boats, Have gotten used to the Turbine powered boats, but still enjoy the morning heats when the pi…

  76. DETROIT - Detroit’s automakers went out with a whimper in 2007, as a lackluster December failed to pull the industry out of the lowest U.S. auto sales slump in nearly a decade. Ford Motor Co. was knocked from its perch as the No. 2 U.S. auto seller, a position it held since 1931, while General Motors appeared likely to lose its title of the largest automaker in the world. Both were dethroned by the juggernaut that is Toyota. Toyota Motor Corp. sold 2.62 million cars and trucks in the U.S. in 2007, which amounted to 48,226 more than Ford, according to sales figures released Thursday. Toyota’s sales were up 3 percent for the year, buoyed by new products such as the Toyo…

  77. How cool is this? I bet the people of 1957 never expected that Plymouth would be phased out in 2001. Time Capsule "This is the sort of thing that could happen only in Tulsa," spoke Lewis Roberts Jr. during dedication ceremonies marking the observance of Tulsa's Golden Jubilee Week. "TuIsarama!" chairman Roberts' made his remarks as citizens prepared to entomb a new 1957 Plymouth Belvedere Sport Coupe as part of a time capsule buried on the southeast corner of the Tulsa County Courthouse lawn. Why would anyone want to bury a new car? Roberts was asked. "The 'Tulsarama!' committee," he replied, "decided on the event after looking for a method of acquainting the ci…

Lately the Geo Prizm has been very slow to accelerate, and all mashing the gas does is cause the engine to make a lotta noise So here we were, last Monday, and my girlfriend and I were driving home from paying a bill. We're about a mile from home, and at a stop light. All of a sudden we both smell something burning, when the light turns green she tries to go but the car hardly moves. I tell her to pull into the nearest parking lot, and we do going like 5 mph. We pull in, I pop the hood, and there's some smoke coming from the tranny. I figure the clutch went. So in hundred+ heat we walk about halfway home until her aunt comes by and pics us up, and the car is towed to a …

My friend teaches a Gifted and Talented program in her school... her student is a 5th grader (approximately 10 years old). He wants to know more about engines. I told her that's a very open-ended question, as there's a HUGE amount of information to know for each thing. What my question is, are there any good websites that might explain engines (starting with basic information, like OHV vs. OHC), but isn't too complicated to understand? Any websites that might have some animation to show the student about engines in motion, for example, pistons and their firing order, valves opening and closing, etc.? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Some of them I could see being wanted by the public such at GMs Silverado Duramax Diesel Hybrid system where the Diesel motor can also serve as a 30kW generator. This could so be useful during storms when the power goes out to your home. Check out the cool pictures and info here.

At Christmas time I saw a young cousin of mine, she recently graduated college and has taken a job as a teacher. We got to talking about vehicles, and she said she wanted to get a new car... a Highlander Hybrid. She has a mid-90's Camry now, handed down to her from her parents. They also have a Sienna and an '05 Camry that we just finished repairing today after my aunt had an accident. I went to pick up her dad, my uncle, so he could take the Camry, and he mentioned that she has factory ordered a 2010 Equinox in Mocha Steel with chrome package and the brown leather interior. I knew she was a smart kid. Now I'd like to see her parents trade up to GM next time around.

the onion is always good for a laugh. PENSACOLA, FL—Harold Enderby's friends say that when he first saw the Navy's televised announcement that the Flight Demonstration Squadron, better known as the Blue Angels, would be holding open tryouts for the first time in its history, the lifelong aviation buff turned to his fellow sanitation workers at Doug's Dugout Bar-N-Grill and said, "Mark my words—I'm going to be a Blue Angel if it's the last thing I do." And this Sunday, that dream came true for an incredible 43 seconds, as Enderby got the chance to fly the famed Blue Angels' F/A-18 Hornet directly into the tarmac during the first day of the Navy's most dramatic—and colo…
