GM delays earnings, expects 4Q profit General Motors Corp. will delay its fourth-quarter and 2006 earnings reports while the automaker restates earnings dating back to 2002, the company announced Thursday. The world's largest automaker also said it expects to post "significant" improvements in net results from last year, including a profitable fourth quarter with record revenue. GM, which has restated results in seven of its last eight quarters, said the changes are due primarily to tax accounting adjustments and "could be material." GM's earnings announcement was originally scheduled for Tuesday; now the automaker plans to give an update the week of Feb. 5 and expect…

When Barra testified to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce about the ignition switch, she said that she only knew about the issue in late January. U.S. Auto Firms Need One Goal: Build the Best! By JAMES B. STEWART September 26, 2007 In another life, I'd love to run a U.S. auto maker. With General Motors on strike, billions in losses, and U.S. auto makers' market share in a seemingly irreversible decline, I can understand why you'd think this is crazy. Maybe I'm an incurable optimist when it comes to American cars, rooted in a love affair that began when my father brought home a 1957 DeSoto with power windows. But Detroit's glorious past isn't the main reason. I'm convinced that all the industry needs is some bold ideas and leadership. I'd like to think that Alan Mulally at Ford is the man for the job s…

That said, how many of us believe the man when he says GM's latest restructuring plan is the final "fix" for the auto maker? Count me among those who are skeptical. Since December, GM has given us three major restructuring with plans to cut thousands of jobs, close 16 plants, and get rid of half the auto makers brands. Each plan also has come with the CEO saying, "We think we've made the changes necessary for us to get back on track." Every time I heard this it sounded like the movie "Ground Hog Da…

But that, in short, is the job description for Brian Deese, a not-quite graduate of Yale Law School who had never set foot in an automotive assembly plant until he took on his nearly unseen role in remaking the American automotive industry. Nor, for that matter, had he given much thought to what ailed an industry that had been in decline ever since he was born. A bit laconic and looking every bit the just-out-of-graduate-school student adjusting to life in the West Wing — “he’s got this beard that appears an…

  39. General Motors has issued a recall for 3,296 pickups and SUVs for a problem for the ignition switch. The Associated Press reports that the key in the switch can get stuck in the "start" position and then slip to "accessory" if bumped. This is due to the lock gears in the ignition have a larger diameter than the specifications allow. If this happens, this will cause the loss of power assistance to the brakes and steering, along with possibility of no airbag deployment. This seems very familiar to another ignition switch problem on older GM compacts last year. The models affected include, 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 2015 Chevrolet Silverad…

From www.thetruthaboutcars.com General Motors Death Wtach 65 10 April 2006 By Robert Farago I wonder what Billy Durant would have made of Rick Wagoner. GM's founder was a man of great honesty, intelligence and drive. He was also a high school drop out who started the company with a $1000 loan-- and ended-up penniless. Twice. Perhaps that's why historians tend to credit General Motors' epic growth to the man appointed president in 1923; about whom an observer wrote, "The manufacture of correct assessments, not physical products, is what most gratified Alfred Sloan." Billy was the “car guy.” Alfred was the “bean counter.” The history of GM is the history of the str…

Wagoner Rumors Start to Swirl Will GM lose its CEO to financial churn? by Joseph Szczesny (2006-03-06) For General Motors' Rick Wagoner, March ought to be a good if not a great month. His beloved Duke Blue Devils are an odds-on favorite to sweep through the NCAA Tournament, and GM's retail sales are showing signs of moving in a positive direction after two years of enormous difficulty. However, while no one is predicting that GM's board of directors has asked Wagoner to prepare a resignation letter, the gossip around Detroit is that he could be reaching the end of his tenure as GM's chairman and chief executive officer. Until recently, Wagoner had been viewed as GM…

To enforce the deal, GM issued a threat: If dealers don't sign, the company can, in bankruptcy, cancel their franchises now. Dealers must sign by this Friday, June 12, or risk termination. Such agreements ordinarily could not be enforced because they conflict with state franchise laws, which limit an automaker's freedom to rewrite franchise agreements. He says he believes that U.S. vehicle sales in 2008 will be flat because manufacturers will likely spend more on incentives to keep it around 16 million. GM in the past has been known to spend more on incentives than some of its competitors. "We've broken that cycle of incentive spending," LaNeve said, noting that buyers' reasons for choosing GM have evolved from a great deal to a great product. "But you sti…
