Japanese cash for clunkers program draws criticism 12/10/2009, 4:24 PMBY MARK KLEIS Detroit’s Big Three automakers are voicing concern over Japan’s version of the cash for clunkers program, which declares virtually all imported vehicles ineligible for government rebates. The Big Three have taken their concerns to the U.S. Government in a call for action. Japan has recently launched its own version of the cash for clunkers program in an effort to spur its economy and shore up struggling new cars sales which are down 34.7 percent from their peak. However, unlike the American cash for clunkers initiative, Japan’s program specifically outlaws the eligibility of imported ve…

Is is possible to get our original join dates back? As in if the member remembers it? ...Or if any info was salvaged? Not that it really matters, though... but I just like having joined on Dec 28, 03. Aug 19, 05 just isn't as nice. And it puts me equal to or lower than newer members. As if they have superiority. Ehh... I'm probably just being selfish...

Koenigsegg CCX Revealed Text & photos courtesy Koenigsegg Automotive AB 02-24-2006 First Impression The first impression of the Koenigsegg CC is its dynamic stance and futuristic, aggressive attitude. It appears amazingly low and broad, with the cockpit-like semicircular windscreen and organically shaped rear hood as key features. The smooth and polished body is gently curved, almost simplistic; a fully integrated design. Lines and surfaces appear thoroughbred and slippery, projecting an image of velocity onto the machine. This design shouts in a clear and universal language: “I travel at extreme speed”. Machined for Speed Koenigsegg's design seeks to give an in…

Lamborghini, Ferrari and Bentley expand use of carbon fiber Rhoda Miel Automotive News Europe -- October 13, 2010 06:01 CET European carmakers such as Lamborghini, Ferrari, Bentley and McLaren made carbon-fiber composites the standard for high-end supercars. Now they're taking carbon fiber even further, creating new ways to reduce molding time and get more of the material into structural parts. Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A made its new technology the centerpiece of its Sesto Elemento concept, which was introduced Sept. 30 at the Paris auto show. The car uses carbon fiber for the passenger compartment, the front and rear-end structures, suspension components, the i…

China's Brilliance BS6 sedan fails German crash test 06.21.07, 10:52 AM ET | Link to Original Article @ Autoblog FRANKFURT (Thomson Financial) - A car with which China's Brilliance wanted to conquer Europe's automobile market has failed to pass a benchmark German crash test, the German ADAC automobile club said today. The BS6 sedan, made by Chinese car maker Brilliance, won only one out of a possible five stars in the crash test, carried out in accordance with Euro NCAP regulations, at ADAC's crash test laboratories, the organisation said. It was the second time in less than two years that a Chinese-made car has failed the test, following the spectacular failure o…

I am currently in discussions with a contact at GM for C&G to receive test vehicles for us to review. I am looking for editors to join the staff who would be willing to review and write these articles. I can only accept one or two positions. You must be over 25 years old, have access to a good digital camera <no camera phones>, and be fully licensed to drive. Some ability to write well would be helpful. There may be further requirements.

LUXURY CAR DEMAND SHORTENS THE HOLIDAY SEASON FOR GERMAN PLANT WORKERS By Drew Johnson The Christmas and New Year’s holidays are typically a slow time for the world’s automakers, but German luxury brands like Mercedes-Benz and BMW are working overtime to keep up with booming foreign demand. New cars sales have actually declined more than 25 percent in Germany over the last 11 months, but strong demand from China and the United States is keeping production rolling along at full capacity. In fact both Mercedes-Benz and BMW are keep factories open during their normal Christmas to New Year’s shut down. “2010 was expected to be a tough year all round,” John Lawson, a Londo…

Mahindra brushes back Global Vehicles, "rejects any attempt to order" pickups by Jeff Glucker (RSS feed) on Sep 28th 2010 at 6:20PM The automotive soap opera that is Mahindra keeps on turning. Today, the Indian automaker issued a statement regarding the claims put forth by Global Vehicles. Mahindra accuses GV of "engaging in PR theatrics while pursuing an unnecessary lawsuit." It states that the contract with Global Vehicles expired and Mahindra is free to pursue other means of bringing its Pik-Up to its network of waiting U.S. dealers. It has effectively rejected Global Vehicles' $35 million order. Mahindra further claims that Global Vehicles is working hard to damage …

MAHINDRA CONFIRMS IT HAS "NO DATE" FOR U.S. LAUNCH OF COMPACT PICKUP TRUCK By Drew Johnson Mahindra & Mahindra assured Leftlane back in the summer of 2008 that its compact pickup truck was right on schedule for its United States launch, but that guarantee has apparently turned belly up. Following a number of subsequent delays, a squabble between Mahindra and its U.S. distributor – Global Vehicles USA – has indefinitely put the Indian automaker’s U.S. plans on hold. Mahindra was originally slated to begin U.S. sales of a compact pickup truck in mid-2009. Global Vehicles USA recently filed a lawsuit against Mahindra, claiming the Indian automaker unlawfully termina…

Mahindra Tries To Dump Its Importer, U.S. Launch Left In Limbo By Richard Read Reporter August 27th, 2010 Things were going so well for Mahindra: Americans were ready for the pickups they'd been promising, the Environmental Protection Agency gave the company's diesels the green light, and Mahindra's U.S. importer, Global Vehicles, had put together a nationwide network of dealers to sell the trucks. Then things went south -- but not, as Georgia's Global Vehicles was expecting, Deep South. Yesterday, in a very brief post to its U.S. website, Mahindra said it had dropped Global as its American importer. Tensions between the two companies had been on the rise since Glob…

Mahindra trying to back away from another U.S. deal? by Zach Bowman (RSS feed) on Dec 27th 2010 at 8:29AM After Mahindra notoriously backed out of a deal with a U.S. supplier, Compact pickup fans are still licking their wounds over the news that the company's trucks won't be coming to our shores anytime soon. As it turns out, Global Vehicles USA may not be the only American company to have been wronged by Mahindra. Bannon Automotive claims that the two broke a dea…

Marchionnne says next European car merger may involve French Bloomberg News April 13, 2010 06:01 CET ROME (Bloomberg) -- Fiat S.p.A. CEO Sergio Marchionne said the next European auto merger may involve a French manufacturer. “The next merger will probably be French,” Marchionne told reporters in Rome today, when asked what the next industry consolidation move could be. “They tried with Mitsubishi and they will try with someone else,” the CEO said, referring to PSA/Peugeot-Citroen, the French carmaker that ended talks last month over a proposed equity swap with Japan's Mitsubishi Motors Corp. PSA also has an engine partnership with BMW AG. The companies said in Febr…

Mazda & Honda Suspend Orders For US William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com March 28, 2011 Mazda and Honda are suspending orders for vehicles built in Japan due to the earthquake and inventory problems. Mazda said it's shutting down it's plants in Hiroshima and Hofu. The plants which build the Mazda2, Mazda3, Mazda5, MX-5 / Miata, RX-8, CX7 and CX9 were running last week for three days using parts in its inventory. However, Mazda will be idling plants starting this week due to part shortages. Mazda's U.S.spokesman Jay Amestoy said the decision to idle plants will only effect shipments of vehicles for May 2011. As you know, last night the server experienced some major issues again. Well today, I approached a person recommended to me by other people who run this same software. On the forum for IP.Board admins that I frequent, Gary is often mentioned as a savior. Well, today he did just that for us. The problem last night wasn't that Cheers and Gears doesn't have enough server. No, in fact, the server we have is way more powerful than we really need. By my calculations, we could be 5 to 6 times our current size and traffic levels.... if the server is configured properly. Essentially, we have a Z-06 engine under the hood here. And there in was our problem. I am an I.T. guy... bu…

However, what do you think about an automotive advertising wiki/database to collect current and vintage material? Let me know in the poll. [source: MotorAuthority] Mercedes Benz Targets 0.20Cd Drag Coefficient in Next Five Years Sometimes, making cars more efficient is best done through the application of more fundamental principles such as improved aerodynamics, rather than complex and expensive powertrain upgrades. Mercedes Benz is embracing that philosophy, with a plan to bring the respective drag coefficients of its cars below 0.20Cd within the next five years. The carmaker claims it already produces the world's most aerodynamic production car - the new 2010 E-Class Coupe, which scores a drag coefficient figure of 0.24Cd. The new coupe even manages to out-slip th…

Merging Malaysia’s National Car Companies Hard to Justify, Analysts Say By Mack Chrysler WardsAuto.com, Aug 31, 2010 9:00 AM To unite Malaysia’s two national car companies or not; that is the question, but just how seriously such a move should be considered is unclear. Industry analysts believe a pairing of Proton Holdings Bhd and Perusahaan Otomobile Kedua Nasional Sdn Bhd (Perodua) would be awkward at best and hard to justify on several important counts. As national companies, both auto makers have been indulged and overprotected by the government for years, safely ensconced behind a wall of tariff barriers, tax exemptions, rebates, subsidies and other special…

In some cases you may not even remember the topic title, but would like to go back to it, and see what responses may have been added. Another fast connection link needed is current topics, instead of, again, having to search thru the whole format.

Nanotech Standards Coming to European Auto Industry By Keith Nuthall and Mark Rowe WardsAuto.com, Aug 2, 2010 9:00 AM As auto manufacturers start to realize the utility of incorporating parts and components using nanotechnology to improve their performance, the European Union is looking hard at special regulations to protect the public and the environment from nanoparticles. These miniscule materials are a double-edged sword. They allow plastics, textiles, alloys and coatings to have new and highly marketable properties, but they also can behave in unexpected ways, passing through human skin into the blood or even brain. How they interact with nature is not understood…

Roseville, MI - When we re-launched the new C&G we knew we were looking to change a few things. The first being the new forums of course and the layout of the homepage of the web-site. We also wish to make a tremendous effort towards courting new affiliates and attracting sponsorship to C&G, something that has been missing since it's inception. While we will stay away from pop-ups we cannot deny the fact that we are actively searching for advertisers to advertise their product on C&G to reach a worldwide audience. One quick glance at our most recent statistics shows that people from countries such as China, Japan, Australia, Argentina, and Korea visited th…

Not sure what I missed, or how to find what everyone's been talking about for the last day or so.

There is a new feature coming in the software, Clubs. They work much in the same way that Facebook groups do. That is, any standard member can create and run a club. Clubs can have their own topics, galleries, blogs, and calendar. You can literally run your own mini-forum inside of CheersandGears if you wanted. If you create a club, you can have control over its membership, appoint moderators, or have it be invisible to the general public (Admins can still see everything of course). Topics from Clubs can be moved to the general forum and vice versa. If a bunch of you are Game of Thrones fans and want to chat together in a "Club" here on C&G, you can…

Hey everyone, Thanks for taking the time to check out the details on our newest feature, the Newsreel. Thanks to clever programming talent on loan from God, our webmaster Frank Donato (Z28luvr) put together this great new scrolling textbar feature in order for us to communicate the latest breaking news regarding the forum and GM. How does this fit in with our current format? Simple: Our C&G Top Stories section will still contain our latest big stories, laid out in a professional format. Our Hot Topics section will continue to contain links to current topics of interest regarding GM and the auto industry. The new Newsreel will therefore be used to communicate a wide …

HELP! I have not changed any of my settings, but the new front page is wider than my screen format, and to read it, I have to scroll across the page. Why???? It used to fit perfectly. I also notice this on some, not all the forum links, but not all the time. What is going on?

A new front page is coming. I would like your input as to what you would like to see changed, added, subtracted any other comments you have. No guarantee that I can integrate all ideas, but would like everyone to throw something into the ring.

If you visit the Cheers and Gears homepage often - and you should because its updated frequently, contains lots of features, and all the cool members are doing it - you've hopefully noticed a new Hot Topic box underneath The Competition entitled Hot Topics: The Industry. Be sure to scroll down a little further from now on and check out the latest topics concerning the automotive industry! As always, if you have any other comments, suggestions, or things you'd like to see added to C&G, let us know anytime!

Hey guys, we're switching gears and redesigning the logo. The final design is nearly in place, but there's two versions with different fonts. We like both, so the final choice will come down to the community. Vote for the one you prefer! V.1 V.2

So the current site skin we are using was only a temporary fix. The prior skin did not render properly on certain brower/OS combinations so I had to change it quickly. I have a new skin installed and have been testing it for about two weeks. I am getting ready to switch the site over to the new skin very soon. This new theme is very mobile friendly and will allow you to use C&G from your phone or tablet much easier than you can today. I invite you to try the new skin by scrolling to the bottom of any page, click Change Theme, and pick the theme named Nerva. To switch back, pick the theme named Haze. As always please report any issues in this thread.

Multiple users have reported issues with the current skin we are using. I've opened a ticket with the skin's creator and not had any reply. If you are having difficulty with the current skin or it isn't rendering in your browser properly* feel free to scroll to the bottom and change your theme to Haze. This may become the new theme for C&G going forward after I make a few more adjustments. *Almost all problems are being reported when the user is on a Mac and using Safari. If you are one of these users, you will almost certainly want to switch to the Haze theme. Please please please report any issues to me promptly.

Over the next couple of days I'll be uploading new skin graphics and messing around with color schemes. If you see things look a little weird, that's just me.

New Toyota Europe boss tasked with halting sales dip Frenchman Leroy to head carmaker in Europe Luca Ciferri Automotive News Europe -- June 14, 2010 08:44 CET Production expert and recently appointed quality overseer Didier Leroy will become the first European to head Toyota Motor Corp.'s operations in Europe. Leroy's main priority will be to reverse Toyota's declining European sales and repair the automaker's image after more than 1.7 million cars were recalled in Europe as part of the company's global campaign to address safety issues. Leroy, a 52-year-old French native, will become president of Toyota Motor Europe effective June 24. He will succeed current pre…

BMW has done the (inexplicable) inevitable, expanding its M treatment from cars to SUVs (or Sports Activity Vehicles in BMW parlance). The New York Auto Show marks the world debut of the X5 M and X6 M, and in typical M fashion, the high riders get substantially more power than their more pedestrian variants. Both vehicles get uprated versions of the 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 that debuted in the X6 last year. Power goes from a mere 400 hp up to 555 hp in M form with torque swelling from 450 to 500 lb-ft. While the increase in twist doesn't seem like all that much, BMW is claiming it's produced from 1,500 all the way to 5,650 rpm. The 4.4-liter V8 is direct injected …

News may appear out of order for a bit.... or old articles may pop back to the top looking like they were published more recently. (Tesla autopilot article is my test article currently) This is not a bug. This is me testing software that will enable automatic publishing of our articles to Apple News to hopefully reach a larger audience.

I hope you are all enjoying the new look of the website. As I mentioned in the other thread, there will be another major update just ahead of the Chicago Auto Show. This update will change the structure of the site's article pages with the aim of making our news easier to find and modernizing our front page. One part of this change will go into effect as early as today - Currently, when we post an article, a topic is automatically created that contains the article as the first post plus the comments on that article. This is bad practice as far as the search engines are concerned as it creates duplicate content in two places on the same website. The change that I will …

NHTSA probes BMW Z4, Mazda3 over steering issues By Drew Johnson The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has launched a new investigation involving the BMW Z4 and Mazda3 over steering concerns. The NHTSA’s probe is looking into a possible power-steering defect. The NHTSA has received a total of 107 steering complaints involving the 2003-2005 BMW Z4 and 33 complaints against the 2007-2009 Mazda3. One of the BMW complaints resulted in a crash while three of the Mazda3’s reported cases ended in a collision. According to the NHTSA, the BMW Z4’s “steering wheel sticks, binds or locks up, and requires increased steering effort resulting in difficulty controlling …

NHTSA PROBING 2006 HONDA CR-V, 2007 KIA OPTIMA OVER SAFETY CONCERNS By Drew Johnson The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced it has two separate safety probes involving the Honda CR-V and the Kia Optima. The first investigation, involving the 2006 Honda CR-V, is due to an electrical issue. The NHTSA is investigating complaints that the vehicle’s master power window switch is defective, causing the melting or burning or related electrical wiring components. The NHTSA has only received three complaints about the issue, but all of them have involved a vehicle fire. If a recall is issued, it could include 150,000 2006 CR-V models. In a separate in…

Nissan, Hyundai profits soar; U.S., China seen slowing July 29, 2010 - 4:16 am ET SEOUL/YOKOHAMA, Japan (Reuters) - Nissan Motor Co. and Hyundai Motor Co's forecast-beating quarterly profits may prove tough to match in the second half as robust sales in China and elsewhere start to slow. A patchy recovery in the U.S. market has become one of the biggest concerns for the auto industry, especially Japanese automakers, which rely heavily on the region for its profits. Nissan, Japan's No.3 automaker, reported its strongest quarterly operating profit in more than two years as sales surged, but it left its cautious guidance unchanged amid an increasingly murky outlook for d…

Nissan, Hyundai reportedly duking it out for No. 2 Asian automaker in U.S. by Chris Shunk (RSS feed) on Aug 30th 2010 at 9:32AM Nissan has long been the number three Asian automaker in the U.S., lagging behind both Honda and Toyota on the sales charts. But the Japanese automaker has been on a bit of a roll of late, with 10 straight months of sales gains and an aggressive product onslaught planned for the next 24 months. Nissan would love to unseat Honda to finally sneak up to the number two slot in the States, but a funny thing's happening: Hyundai is doing its best to push Nissan down to number four. Nissan and Hyundai are currently in a dead heat in U.S. auto sales.…

First from Autoblog: BMW switching to turbocharged M cars After two decades of normally-aspirated high-revving engines shoehorned under the hoods of its M cars, BMW is changing direction and will begin to offer direct-injection turbocharged powerplants in its future high-performance flagships. The German automaker is blaming tough environmental emission standards and the soaring manufacturing costs of the specialty-built V8 and V10 engines found in today's M3, M5, and M6 models for its decision. We also suspect the fact that both Audi and Mercedes-Benz have successfully offered torque-laden forced-induction powerplants for years on their performance models may have s…

I am currently tracking an issue on our server that is causing the server to crash unexpectedly and then reboot multiple times in succession. You may see this manifest itself in an SQL error page or the site not loading at all, but it stops after about 30 minutes. It is not the dreaded database issues we have experienced in the past. Just letting you know I am aware of the issue and working on it.

I've noticed some oddness over the last week, when typing into a form for a post, as I am doing right now, occasionally the cursor suddenly backspaces to the beginning of the word I'm typing--or back several words. I've seen this behaviour on these forums and another that is also using IP.Board (2.3.1 and 2.3.6), on multiple computers---a Win XP machine using Chrome, a Vista machine w/ both Chrome and Firefox 3.5. Anyone seen anything like this? It can be very annoying when it happens 5-6 times in typing a post, as it did typing this one.

Don't know exactly how to phrase this civilly, but keeping topics and sub-topics off limits for non-members is only gonna screw C&G up the rear. I've done research. Get with the program or lose it.
