Toyota's Gain a Plus for U.S. Automaking: Doron Levin (Update1) By Doron Levin April 26 (Bloomberg) -- The report that Toyota Motor Corp., Japan's biggest automaker, surpassed No. 1 General Motors Corp. in worldwide sales during the first quarter shouldn't be viewed as evidence of U.S. industrial decline. U.S. automaking arguably has never been stronger. That's not to say General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Corp. aren't struggling and won't soon, if ever, dominate the industry as they once did. For long-term owners of the common stocks and bonds of the U.S.-based automakers, not to mention for their workers and for the communities in…

  7. There is some good news appearing from General Motors' ignition switch mess. The Detroit News reports that GM dealers have repaired 1.36 million ignition switches globally out of 2.36 million it believes are still in use, or about 57.8 percent of vehicles around the world. It should be noted that the 2.36 million amount is down from the 2.59 million GM recalled back in February and March. "The difference between the 2.59 million produced and recalled, and the populations being sought is made up for by scrapped vehicles or vehicles no longer traceable by registration," said GM spokesman Alan Adler in a email. In the U.S., GM dealers have repaired 1.14 million vehicles ou…

A Smaller GM Might Be a Beautifuller GM Date posted: 07-10-2006 I suppose that General Motors' current obsession with E85 ethanol promotion makes it the world's largest all-natural organic car company. After all, corn is organic and ethanol is distilled from starch crops, including corn — all-natural. And yes, being based on the California coast absolutely makes me a nuts and granola kinda guy, so I'm bullish on grain-alcohol fuels. The downside is that in the whole state, there are only four places that offer E85 (85-percent ethanol, 15-percent gasoline) fuel. The company has cut prices on a minibus it builds with Wuling called the Wuling Sunshine after seeing sales drop 3% during the past seven months in an otherwise growing market. General Motors Corp., Delphi Corp. and the UAW are close to an agreement on a massive job-cutting plan to offer retirement packages to thousands of blue-collar workers, people familiar with the talks said Friday. The pact would help the struggling automaker avoid a crippling strike at the auto parts supplier. GM and the UAW are expected to announce details of the package within days. The deal would accelerate GM's efforts to cut 30,000 jobs across North America by the end of 2008, including 25,000 in the United States. It also would move the automaker and the union closer to a bailout package for Delphi that would avert a strike there, the sources said. GM also indica…

DETROIT (Reuters) -- General Motors said on Thursday it expects to see net cost savings of about $13 billion over six years from its health-care deal with the United Auto Workers union. GM, in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing, said it will begin accounting for its contributions to the Defined Contribution Voluntary Employees' Beneficiary Association, or DC VEBA, during the first quarter of 2006 and will take a $1 billion charge before taxes in the quarter. GM said it will begin to realize a reduction in health-care expense in the third quarter. Under the agreement struck between GM and the…

Wow! 47,600 buyouts Deal speeds up GM turnaround by 2 years; Delphi exodus paves way for restructuring. Bill Vlasic / The Detroit News DETROIT -- More than 47,000 union workers at General Motors Corp. and bankrupt Delphi Corp. have taken buyouts or early retirements in what amounts to the biggest corporate downsizing in U.S. automotive history. GM said Monday that 35,000 hourly employees have agreed to leave the struggling automaker for packages ranging from $35,000 to $140,000 -- which will allow the company to reach its target reduction of 30,000 hourly jobs by Jan. 1, two years early. GM: NOT SO FAST, TOYOTA: A global sales surge keeps us ahead, Wagoner reports January 7, 2006 BY TOM WALSH FREE PRESS BUSINESS WRITER They may want to hold off on the party hats at Toyota Motor Corp. General Motors Corp. Chairman Rick Wagoner said Friday that GM sold nearly 9.2 million cars and trucks worldwide in 2005, the most since 1978, casting doubt on forecasts that Toyota Motor Corp. might surpass GM as the world's automotive sales leader this year. For the first time in its history, GM sold more cars outside the United States than inside. Not only did GM emerge as the market leader in fast-growing China, it also posted all-time sales highs in Latin America a…

Link to Article GM researches high-tech windshields to aid vision By MARGARET HARDING, Associated Press Writer 2 hours, 1 minute ago WARREN, Mich. - When Coke bottle glasses just won't cut it for safe driving, a futuristic windshield might do the trick. General Motors Corp. researchers are working on a windshield that combines lasers, infrared sensors and a camera to take what's happening on the road and enhance it, so aging drivers with vision problems are able to see a little more clearly. Though it's only in the research stage now, the technology soon will be more useful than ever. The 65 and older population in the U.S. will nearly double in about 20 years, …

I'm in Northern California, and I've never heard GM advertise on radio, probably the most targetted of traditional media outside of niche magazines. I usually listen to NPR and contempoprary pop/alternative stations, and have never heard any car commercials other than Toyota and Lesux (those two, on the other hand, seem to blanket the airwaves with new and certified used commercials), and VW sometime back. This morning, I heard a Chevy ad on NPR promoting their alternative fuel research. I think NPR listeners may be skeptical until something like the Volt goes in to production, but I was glad to hear GM taking the initiative to reach out. Seems like GM is making progres…

GMAC has loosened the purse strings, with General Motors' finance arm allocating $6 billion for auto loans for the next 60 days. The 60 day mark is critical to GM, as it is the government's drop-dead date to satisfy Auto Task Force viability requirements. The cash infusion will help struggling dealers with dried up credit channels, but it will also be used to finance cars and trucks to people with credit scores under 620. The under 620 crowd is referred to as subprime, a term that is now synonymous with the words "bailout" and "recession." Back in October, GMAC restricted lending to customers with scores over 700, and when the U.S. government provided a $6 billion in lo…

GM aim: Show its softer side Global restructuring, cost cutting and a revamped product line are the forces driving General Motors Corp.'s turnaround bid. But another less tangible factor has grabbed the attention of the world's largest automaker: likability. Long viewed as stodgy and ultra-corporate, GM is making a concerted effort to show a more human and personal side of the world's largest automaker. The reason being, I think that we can use our information to deduce all the possible ways that this will affect GM. Only a few rules I want to mention: - Don't get into a big pissing match/flame war here. There are plenty of other threads where you can have fightin' words. - Try and keep theories as simple and easy to comprehend as possible. Not all of us are business majors. - Even if you think your theory is stupid or implausible (e.g: the UAW accepts Delphi's $9/hour offer), chime in anyway. The more d…

Under the plan, which will be in effect from the last quarter of this year through 2007, GM will set cost-cutting targets for individual parts rather than setting overall corporate cost-cutting targets for 250 to 300 of its top suppliers. GM spokesman Tom Wickham said suppliers have criticized GM for setting overall cost-cutting targets for supply companies even if they were meeting GM's targets for some of their individual parts. Under the new program, a supplier that makes three or four sepa…
