Forget hybrids and fuel cells. Some scientists in the US think cars of the future could run on powdered-metal fuel, reports KURT KLEINER. If smog-choked streets test our love for petrol and diesel engines, rocketing fuel prices and global warming could end that relationship once and for all. But before you start saving for the fuel cell-powered electric car that industry experts keep promising, there's something you should know: the car of the future will run on metal. So reckons Dave Beach, a researcher at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, who has come up with a plan to transform the way we fuel our engines. Chunks of metal such as iron, aluminium…

Germany's highest court, the Federal Administrative Court ruled today that cities can ban older diesel vehicles to help cut pollution. According to Reuters, the case was brought to the Federal Administrative Court after local courts ordered the Düsseldorf and Stuttgart governments to ban older diesel vehicles. The states disagreed with this decision and appealed it to the highest court. Originally, the Federal Administrative Court was expected to rule on the case last week, but it was pushed back. In the ruling, the court said the two cities should introduce the bans gradually and exemptions can be made for certain types of vehicles like ambulances. “It wi…

http://money.cnn.com/2006/09/27/markets/oil_eia/index.htm gas prices continue to drop--maybe theres still some hope. but but then again: so if 60 is "good" why the hell was it almost 80? supposed to go over 100? are we making a difference in some way with ethanol, conservation, boycotts, and prius' and hybrids in general. or does this have more to do with the usual seasonal changes in demand. which really werent so usual since the past couple of years. ive heard several "analysts" suggest months ago oil and gas prices would plummet at some point. i remember laughing at the time because one of the qualifiers was when things settle down in the mid east. lik…

Angry UAW fights Delphi exec bonuses

The United Auto Workers on Tuesday filed a scathing objection to Delphi Corp.'s proposal in U.S. Bankruptcy Court to reward its executive team with bonuses and stock potentially worth more than $500 million. In its filing, the UAW called Delphi's executive compensation program "grossly excessive" and said it would impede the union from reaching agreement with the bankrupt auto supplier on wage and job cuts for hourly workers. The UAW's objection, along with a similar filing by the United Steelworkers of America, set the stage for a battle on the compensation package at a Nov. 29 court hearing in New York. At issue is whether Delphi w…

Many new cars are fitted with various driver assist systems; backup cameras, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and lane-keep assist to name a few. But this has introduced the problem of drivers becoming too reliant on these systems, causing them not realize the limitations and taking their own "preventative measures". The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety published a report this month looking into drivers' experiences with the assistance technologies and seeing how they relate to their understanding of it. The group commissioned researchers from the University of Iowa to survey over 1,200 owners of 2016 and 2017 model year veh…

Ryan Daleo, a 28-year-old factory worker for Ford Motor Co., has the auto industry in his blood. His great-grandfather, great-grandmother, both grandfathers and father worked the lines of Detroit area auto plants. Don't tell his family about the virtues of a foreign car; they don't care for Toyotas or Nissans. Don't dare park one in their driveway; they'll ask you to move it. Daleo, a Canton resident who grew up in Inkster and Garden City, said he was meant to work on cars and trucks. Five years ago, he started with Ford, where his great-grandfather first worked in the 1940s. "I'm a gearhead," said Daleo, wearing blue jeans and a …

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com December 22, 2011 When the US Transportation Secretary, Ray LaHood thinks the NTSB’s recommendation of banning mobile electronics is a bad idea, you know it’s a bad idea. Speaking with the Detroit News, LaHood states he doesn’t supports the NTSB’s recommendation. "The problem is not hands-free. That is not the big problem in America." LaHood has been banging the drum on distracted driving in the U.S. for awhile, with him prodding states to crack down on distracted driving, especially texting or making calls behind the wheel. However, banning cell phone use in a car outright is going over the line. However, LaHood di…

My question is why is the US government giving tax money to Japan's Nissan Motor Co? The government of Japan would never give GM, Ford or Chrysler this kind of support, and the Japanese government would laugh in their face if they had asked for it. DETROIT (Reuters) -- Ford Motor Co will receive nearly $5.9 billion in U.S. government loans to spur development of more fuel-efficient vehicles, the Obama administration said today. Japan's Nissan Motor Co. will receive $1.6 billion, and startup green car maker Tesla Motors Inc. will receive $465 million in advanced technology financing from the Energy Department program. The advanced fuel cell could eliminate range anxiety and make electric cars more practical, while keeping carbon-dioxide emissions low. If you want to take an electric car on a long drive, you need a gas-powered generator, like the one in the Chevrolet Volt, to extend its range. The problem is that when it's running on the generator, it's no more efficient than a conventional car. In fact, it's even less efficient, because it has a heavy battery pack to lug around. Now researchers at the University of Maryland have made a fuel cell that could provide a far more efficient alternative to a gasoline generator. Like all fuel cells, it generates electricity through a chemica…

Automakers Urge U.S. to Emphasize Biofuels, Not CAFE (Update2) By Gopal Ratnam The best way to reduce oil imports and carbon dioxide emissions ``over the next decade is through increased use of bio-fuels,'' said Rick Wagoner, chief executive officer of Detroit-based General Motors Corp. Jim Press, president of Toyota Motor Corp.'s North American unit, broke with his peers on criticizing CAFE. He said Toyota exceeds today's standards and the Japanese automaker favors the program as long as it is ``fair, technologically feasible, cost- effective and does not discourage early compliance.'' ] Wagoner said CAFE has ``failed to meet its intended goal'' of reducing oil de…

Ariel is a very crazy company. Founded in 1902 as motorcycle manufacturer in Great Britain, the name was resurrected some years back to produce some of maddest street-legal track cars called the Atom. Think motorized scaffolding and you come close to what Ariel builds. The past couple of years have seen the company expand to building motorcycles. Now the company is now taking on the off-road buggy with the Nomad. The Nomad follows the same minimalistic approach as the Atom with a visible tubular steel frame - that is laser-cut, CNC-machined, bronze-welded, and phosphate and powder-coated - , an engine mounted in the back, and a bare bones interior. Where the Nomad differ…

DETROIT – Unionized workers at Ford Motor Co. have approved contract changes that include freezing wages and cutting benefits in a move aimed at helping the automaker remain competitive. The United Auto Workers said Monday a majority of hourly workers voted in favor of modifications to the 2007 contract with Ford, eliminating cost-of-living increases and cash bonuses. The agreement is expected to be a model for Chrysler LLC and General Motors Corp., which need to bring their labor costs in line with those of foreign auto companies' plants in the U.S. as a condition for the $17.4 billion they have received in federal loans so far. Under terms of their loan agreements, pr…

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has sent a cease-and-desist letter to Dolder, Falco and Reese Partners LLC, the company behind an aftermarket device called the Autopilot Buddy. Autopilot Buddy is a small, weighted device that clips onto either side of the wheel to place minor amounts of torque. This fools the Autopilot system into thinking that a driver has their hands on the wheel. The company markets the device as "nag reduction device", reducing the amount of warnings to tell driver to keep their hands on the wheel. The company has a disclaimer on Autopilot Buddy that states, This would be ok if a video demonstrating the product did…

The US government is pulling back on some of their financial support for electric vehicles. Coming this Saturday, a tax credit which allows taxpayers to deduct 30% of the cost an electric vehicle charger (good for up to $30,000 in commercial cases) will be discontinued. If you're thinking the 30% deduction is a bit high, last year the deduction was set at 50%. "The timing of this couldn't be more unfortunate," coming just as more electric cars are on the way." said Genevieve Cullen, vice president of the Electric Drive Transportation Association, a trade group for the electric-vehicle industry. Cullen and other proponents have been begging congress to extend the tax d…

The Geneva Motor Show saw Mercedes introduce their new AMG GT 4-Door and BMW revealing their M8 Gran Coupe concept. We still find ourselves scratching our heads as to why these vehicles exist in the first place, but a new Bloomberg report explains an interesting reason as to why automakers are building them. These high-performance models with high price-tags will help generate the cash needed to develop electric vehicles. BMW for example is in the midst of its largest rollout of new models and variants. Most of them will be higher-margin to help get more cash into their coffers. "The market for high-end, high-performance four-door coupes will get significantly m…

Five years on, NHTSA hasn't put all of those recommendations into practice. Detroit's Big Three automakers saw June sales drop between 12 and 13 percent as buyers pulled back from the previous month, suggesting that the hot May sales may have been an aberration. So automakers on Thursday were touting their year-over-year June sales numbers, which compared favorably with 2009's depressed figures. Hyundai was the world's only major automaker to buck the downward trend, reporting a 4 percent June sales increase from May and a 35 percent jump compared with June 2009. J.D. Power: New-Vehicle Sales Decline Becomes Less Steep via AutoRemarketing WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. — October's new-vehicle retail sales will likely show the first single-digit year-over-year decrease in 17 months, according to J.D. Power and Associates, which has projected the industry to retail 651,600 new units for the month. This would be just a 6-percent dip from October 2008 and a 15.2-percent gain from September. The only time that retail sales haven't fallen double digits year-over-year since May 2008 was in August, when sales climbed 13 percent due to CARS, J.D. Power indicated. Meanwhile, new-vehicle fleet sales are projected to fall 4 percent from…

Mopar or No Car Chrysler LLC to buy out General Motors It seems inevitable that GM is spiraling down the drain, and the automotive landscape as we know it is about t change. Where does that leave a GM enthusiast website? Simple: since Chrysler LLC is in much better shape, and has actually been making record profits, it has been announced that Chrysler will buy out GM. Sources familiar with the matter (but who wish to remain anonymous) have confirmed through unwritten material that Chrysler will buy out GM, kill Opel, Buick, Vauxhall, Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Buick, and Saturn. They will leave Cadillac as the luxury brand, and Chrysler will slot where Buick does now…

At Witz’ End: Can Detroit Survive? We ask the experts – and get some hope. by Gary Witzenburg (2007-07-23) Link to Original Article @ thecarconnection.com A lot of hands have been rightly wrung and ink well consumed lately over "Detroit's" prospects for survival. Given all U.S. companies' huge cost disadvantage vs. competitors based anywhere else, can our final three besieged U.S. automakers overcome that plus their union, an indifferent and often hostile federal government, our import-loving media and an apparent majority of Americans still refusing to believe they are worthy and competitive? We recently asked a trio of trained observers and got some enlight…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com January 22, 2013 Last year, we reported on new legislation that wouldn't allow any rental-car company or car dealer to loan/sell any recalled vehicle before the necessary repairs have been made. Currently, only new vehicles cannot be sold unless the necessary repairs have been carried out. At the time, rental-car companies opposed the legislation, but have since agreed with it. Now dealers and smaller rental-car companies are fighting for an exemption from this legislation. Car dealers have more cars in stock as of December since the spring of 2021. The metric car dealers use to measure their supplies is "days of inventory". This measures how long it would take to sell a new car at today's sales price. The age-old industry guideline is 60 days on a car lot. According to Cox Automotive, the average dealer has a 71-day supply. When you have an oversupply, prices start to lower. KBB states that the average for new car prices dropped from November 2022 to November 2023. It's the third straight month with year-over-year pricing decreasing. Due to anticipation of a union strike, automakers stocked up on cars during the summer. When the …

From Forbes Dan Lienert On Autos 12.29.05 The Big Trend 2006 will be the year American automakers borrow a page from the airline industry and break their social contract with unionized workers. In order for the American auto industry to survive, manufacturers will have to cripple their unions, just as Northwest Airlines did. Delphi Chairman Steve Miller has already demoralized his unionized workers; in 2006 he will force the UAW to abandon a decades-old tradition of gold-plated wages and benefits for its workers. Following suit, General Motors, Ford Motor and Chrysler will begin to chip away at the power of their union workers, too. The Unconventional Wisdom …

“Most dangerous car in America.” It’s the title no automaker wants to have, but was given to the Dodge Ram by 24/7 Wall St., a financial publication that put together a list of the worst cars on the road based on testing scores from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, Consumer Reports, the National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration and consumer analyst JD Power. The Ram 1500, a long-standing high-selling pickup truck in the US, has a safety track record that "has long been unimpressive," said 24/7 Wall St., noting poor crash testing results. It also scored a poor 2/5 from JD Power's Initial Quality Study. In second place was the Chevr…

There's a scene where the show's protagonist, Don Draper, deftly undercuts an influential Jaguar dealer by indicating that get-me-in-the-door local radio spots would be an effective way to sell cars like the slinky E-Type. The British executives think this is folly – Draper knows they will – and his advertising strategy wins out over the dealer's approach to move the metal. Jaguar's not doing that, but half a century later in the real world the company is launching plans to make its cars more attainabl…

The procedure, named J2807, is designed to reflect how the pickups are really used, and are supposed to be more accurate than the non-SAE numbers, which manufacturers supply. The procedure tests a pickup’s structure, propulsion, handling, braking, and thermal-handling ability, in a set environment. This procedure also has the truck equipped and not equipped with a load. In light of the GM Ignition Switch and Takata airbag recalls, you would think owners would be aware whether or not their vehicle has a notice and take it in to be repaired. Unfortunately, you would be wrong. Bloomberg reports that only two-thirds of vehicles get repaired. Even more worrying is a third of vehicles under a recall notice aren't repaired within 18 months. “Recalls are only successful, and they only save lives, if they end up getting the cars fixed,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx said. So how do you get owners to repair vehicles? Well that's what NHTSA and automakers will be talking about today at meeting in Washington D.C. with the focus on imp…

Automakers back single crash rating Automakers on Wednesday offered support for a Bush administration proposal to overhaul the government's crash test program for new vehicles and create a single safety ranking. The major problem with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration program is that nearly all vehicles pass current tests, making it difficult for consumers to differentiate between vehicles. NHTSA wants to toughen the voluntary standards, some of which haven't been changed significantly since the program's creation in 1979, as well as reduce three crash ratings to one. At a public hearing Wednesday in Washington to hear experts' comments on the program,…
