Anyone doing anything fun this holiday weekend? For the first time in years, I'm not traveling..staying home to catch up on sleep, pool time, and watch some racing (Indy 500, Turkish GP). Going to be taking a few long weekend trips this summer, but not on holiday weekends....first up is a weekend in Del Mar (San Diego) in mid June.

The Economics of Immigration Are Not What You Think NDN Waves of new immigrants often spark economic anxiety and cultural discomfort, as well as occasional violence and wide-net crackdowns, on the Arizona model. Even here, a nation comprised almost entirely of immigrants and their descendants, we’ve seen these reactions not only in recent times but also a century ago, when waves of poor immigrants from Europe arrived here. With a hundred years’ distance, however, we can now see that those early waves of immigration were generally associated not with economic dislocation and national decline, but with extraordinary economic boom times and America’s emergence as the world…

Taking a deep drag on his cigarette while resting on the steering wheel of his truck, he looks like a parody of a middle-aged lorry driver. But the image covers up a much more disturbing truth: At just the tender age of two, Ardi Rizal's health has been so ruined by his 40-a-day habit that he now struggles to move by himself. The four-stone Indonesia toddler is certainly far too unfit to run around with other children - and his condition is set to rapidly deteriorate. But, despite local officials' offer to buy the Rizal family a new car if the boy quits, his parents feel unable to stop him because he throws massive tantrums if they don't indulge him. His mother, Dia…

Yesterday I broke out the rollerblades for the season.... the pair I have, I've owned since 1997. I got out to the bike trail, strapped them on, and *SNAP*, two straps broke. Anyone have any suggestions for a set of replacement blades that are good quality but don't look like I belong on the set of Dragonball Z?

AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas State Board of Education adopted a social studies and history curriculum Friday that amends or waters down the teaching of religious freedoms, America's relationship with the U.N. and hundreds of other items. The new standards were adopted after a final showdown by two 9-5 votes along party lines, after Democrats' and moderate Republicans' efforts to delay a final vote failed. In one of the most significant curriculum changes, the board dilutes the rationale for the separation of church and state in a high school government class, noting that the words were not in the Constitution and requiring students to compare and contrast the judicial lang…

Summer's coming/here, and inevitably, I have received my annual fyreworks catalog in the mail, despite (& in spite ??) of the disclaimer that NJ & DE residents cannot buy, transport, possess or operate fyreworks without a permit. Many years ago, a temporary co-worker got me a great grab-bag of fun, and about 4 years ago, a brief-cased sized box of them --that survived a to-the-ground building fire (they were in the walk-in safe)-- likewise provided more fun. I'd really like to get some more, and the catalog is SO enticing. Pyro-Impact, Big Bomb Jumbo Cracker, Red, White & Boom... sigh! Anyway, there's a few fyrewerks stores in PA, one in Easton.... any of y…

Who's packing ERs? Not the uninsured Reuters One in five people in the United States visit an emergency room every year, and most of them have health insurance of some kind, according to a U.S. government survey released on Wednesday. The survey contradicts a common perception that emergency rooms are packed with uninsured people and illegal immigrants. It also rejects some claims that people are using the emergency department for routine care -- just 10 percent of visits were for non-urgent causes. "In 2007, approximately one in five persons in the U.S. population had one or more emergency department visits in a 12-month period," the report from the National Center f…

LOS ANGELES – Jewelry from two entire lines being sold exclusively at Walmart stores nationwide, including bracelets and necklaces branded by Miley Cyrus, contains high levels of the toxic metal cadmium, according to an Associated Press investigation. Testing of 61 samples purchased by AP reporters across the country from a Cyrus line and from a series of make-it-yourself metal bracelet charms indicated that 59 of the pieces contained at least 5 percent cadmium by weight, with 53 of those measuring 10 percent or higher. And the world's largest retailer knows the items are tainted. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. received test results in February showing cadmium in these jewelry l…

One day, when the great automotive enthusiast in the sky allows me to win the lottery, this would make a great racing circuit for all of Pa's enthusiasts and its visitors to enjoy. Think of it as our version of the Nurburgring. Unofficially 21.5 miles long, its filled with a little bit of everything. The northern section is very technical and winds through a nice hilly area. Many 90 degree turns, successive switch-backs, and blind curves. There is an awesome portion that winds around a cemetery as it suddenly drops into a valley; a favorite of mine. The southern section is more high speed based with more straights, beginning and ending with tight, near 180 degree turns. A…

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – Space shuttle Atlantis thundered away on its final voyage to orbit Friday, hoisting an experienced crew of six and a full shipment of space station gear. Atlantis sped through a perfectly clear afternoon sky, blazing a trail over the Atlantic before huge crowds eager to catch one of the few remaining shuttle launches. Its destination is the International Space Station, which was soaring over the South Pacific at the time of liftoff. The shuttle should catch up with the orbiting complex and its six residents Sunday. More than 40,000 guests — the biggest launch-day crowd in years — descended on the Kennedy Space Center, all of them eager to witness…

I'm curious if you guys know anything about this college. College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Mi.. I noticed some fairly big names are in the alumni, such as the designer for the Ford GT and Chrysler 300. I've been looking into schooling lately and this campus appears to be good bet for the Automotive Design field and its not overly far away. Tuition and housing would run about $35-$40k a year, which would hopefully be covered by Financial Aid.

How long is your work commute? If it's a long commute, how do you manage it? I'm curious because I a company has contacted me with interest, but if I hypothetically got the job, it's 1 hour and 49 minutes each way. I don't know if I could do that 5 days a week. Been meaning to ask this question for a while- wondering if anybody could provide me with some insight. With the real estate market in the crapper and some pretty cherry foreclosure deals to be had, my folks have finally started seriously thinking about buying a place in greater Phoenix. This would be basically a vacation home sort of aim (Condo + Garage most likely) of course there are other things to deal with in setting something like that up. My dad wanted me to see if I could find out what vehicle registration laws are like in Arizona which would be determinant on whether we bring a vehicle down or buy one there to put in the garage. Obvious preference would be…

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- The victim has probably forgiven the woman who ran him down in a Northampton crosswalk. The police haven't. Police say a Pittsfield woman has been cited for running down Lord Jesus Christ as he crossed the street in Northampton. Officers responding to Tuesday's incident checked the 50-year-old Belchertown man's ID and discovered that, indeed, Lord Jesus Christ is his legal name. He was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor facial injuries. Police say 20-year-old Brittany Cantarella was cited for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. Want to talk politics with your neighbour? The Economist I WAS in Seattle on Monday, chatting to Pat Murakami, a lady who runs a small computer repair shop and does a little political agitating on the side. She’s concerned about her neighbourhood, a vibrant area full of Vietnamese shops and veiled women waiting at bus stops. A few years ago, the city tried to declare parts of it “blighted”. That would have enabled it to seize people’s homes and hand the land to private developers. Mrs Murakami started a group called “Many Cultures, One Message”, to rally her neighbors to object to the proposed bulldozing. She prevailed. Or at least, the plan to knock down chunks of he…

Border security isn't the problem Washington Post The notion that the first thing to do is "secure the border" between the United States and Mexico -- and only then worry about comprehensive immigration reform -- falls somewhere between hopeful fantasy and cynical cop-out. It's a good sound bite but would be a ridiculous policy. Fact-based analysis is increasingly out of fashion, however, and so the border-first hallucination has become popular among politicians and pundits reacting to Arizona's new "breathing while Latino" law. The measure, which has sparked angry protests nationwide, orders police to act on "reasonable suspicion" in identifying, arresting and jailin…

Arizona's Immigration Mistake Wall Street Journal I have spent over 50 years in the law-enforcement profession in the Tucson community, the past 30 of which I have served as sheriff. I have seen relations between our community and law enforcement personnel shift with the times: sometimes challenged when the actions of a few police officers cross the line, and often improving when there is a sense of partnership. But in the past few weeks Arizona became a model for the rest of the country of what not to do. The immigration reform law that was signed by Gov. Jan Brewer on April 23 effectively requires that immigrants be able to prove their legal presence in the state of…

At Christmas time I saw a young cousin of mine, she recently graduated college and has taken a job as a teacher. We got to talking about vehicles, and she said she wanted to get a new car... a Highlander Hybrid. She has a mid-90's Camry now, handed down to her from her parents. They also have a Sienna and an '05 Camry that we just finished repairing today after my aunt had an accident. I went to pick up her dad, my uncle, so he could take the Camry, and he mentioned that she has factory ordered a 2010 Equinox in Mocha Steel with chrome package and the brown leather interior. I knew she was a smart kid. Now I'd like to see her parents trade up to GM next time around.

Heading home after going to a wake for my friend's grandfather, I'm in the middle lane of a 3 lane highway, slowing down for a red light. Noone's in front of me, and cars are on either side of me. Just as I'm about to pass a white GMC cable truck that's on my right, said cable truck juts out into my lane. I can't do anything but jam on the brake pedal and hope for the best. I nail him in the tire, and he takes out my front bumper, scrapes my fender and headlight, and knocks out assorted plastic parts that I can't identify right now because I'm so pissed. How Immigration Crackdowns Backfire Reason Arizona legislators are fed up with being terrorized by illegal immigrants, and they have passed a law to get tough. Under the measure, passed this week and sent to the governor, police would have to stop and question anyone they suspect of being in this country without legal authorization. The bill passed after the fatal shooting of Robert Krentz, a 58-year-old rancher whose killer apparently entered illegally from Mexico. Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu says police are also under siege: "We've had numerous officers that have been killed by illegal immigrants in Arizona." Even Sen. This has been an albatross of sorts for me professionally. I started it back in late July last year, but with all the rain last summer, a few months off for winter, minor surgery, and other jobs tossed into the mix, I did not finish construction on this until yesterday. It was fraught with unknowns. Tho the plans were done up by an architect, he never shot a single elevation, and ultimately 25 yards of dirt had to be removed. Tho he spec'd the upright posts as cedar- he never spec'd the horizontal wall slats as anything. They turned out to be cedar, too, and the material costs ballooned. All the thinner horizontals had to be ripped- you cannot get 3" wide cedar planks. T…

It's amazing how fast things can change in the span of three days. On Tuesday, I was: knee deep in a project for work with what seemed like very little light at the end of the tunnel; the announcement that my company might need to have another round of layoffs this summer due to lack of incoming work; my stocks were getting hammered beyond belief; I was at 45 hours of work for the week even though it was only a Tuesday. Today: the project went out without a hitch and is probably the most complete drawing set issued of the projects I have been a part of; my company won a project that is twice as big as our largest project we have done to date, laying all employment con…

So I have this floor lamp with a end table built into it. Secured by the shaft is casting of an eagle the rests on the table. I remember when I was younger we had it in our living room, but it eventually ended up in the attic when we didn't have a place for it (or it broke, I don't remember). I always thought it was neat, and decided that I wanted to take it with us for my apartment. The lamp shade was gone an the socket for the bulb looked like it was in rough shape, as well as the housing being gone and the wiring being old. However, since they sell kits that let you replace the guts in your old lamp with new ones, I figured I could fix it. In all the madness that was …

Good op-ed piece this morning from the New York Times about this strange state...(bolded items are points I thought were particularly interesting). Desert Derangement Syndrome PHOENIX Driving south from the high, age-worn plateau of northern Arizona, where the earth seems to have turned itself inside-out, I pulled over to take in the full sweep and wonder of this place during one of its better moments. The infinity of sky, the open gallery of sandstone masterpieces it never fails to amaze. Arizona is full of ancient communities the Hopi, the Papago, the Havasupai, the Navajo and outsized geology, with the Painted Desert, the Superstition Mountains and the big …

POWERPOINT Linkity A PowerPoint diagram meant to portray the complexity of American strategy in Afghanistan WASHINGTON — Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal, the leader of American and NATO forces in Afghanistan, was shown a PowerPoint slide in Kabul last summer that was meant to portray the complexity of American military strategy, but looked more like a bowl of spaghetti. Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates, center, in Kabul in March. He gets PowerPoint printouts the night before staff meetings. "When we understand that slide, we'll have won the war," General McChrystal dryly remarked, one of his advisers recalled, as the room erupted in laughter. The slide has since b…

Wrong on immigration Lexington MUCH as I admire his prose style, George Will is horribly wrong this morning. Of Arizona's atrocious new law that allows the state police to arrest anyone they suspect of being an illegal immigrant, he says: Arizona's law might give the nation information about whether judicious enforcement discourages illegality. If so, it is a worthwhile experiment in federalism. On the contrary, empowering the police to stop and demand papers from anyone who looks vaguely Mexican will make life unpleasant for Hispanics while wasting time that officers could more usefully spend pursuing real criminals. More generally, I find the "let's secure the…

The Cobalt's brakes just committed suicide. One minute I had brakes, the next... *grind, shake, screech, clank* It feels like the front pads decided to disintegrate. It was very sudden. I knew I would probably need brakes soon, but I certainly wasn't expecting that. I haven't had any time to inspect them, but needless to say, it can't be driven like this. I have half the braking power and its very obviously doing further damage by the sounds and vibrations its making. I hear and feel more from the left side, so it may just be the front left. Another random issue: My ignition release is being screwy. Turning off the key requires hitting the shift lever a few times before…

Found this on Craigslist: 1993 Buick Park Ave Ultra - $1900 - 57,000 miles I got the address and it's still available. It's only about 15 minutes from my house. I'm going to look at it this evening. The guy says it has a small exhaust leak and the transmission cooler line is leaking, but those are the only known issues. Opinions? Things to look for? I know it's not a truck, but it's cheap and with only 57k miles it'll probably have a lot of life left in it. I could still use the CRV if I need to haul something large, but all of my tools would still fit in the trunk.

http://jalopnik.com/5185281/study-women-more-attracted-to-men-in-expensive-cars We have a rather motley attraction of rides here at C and G, and this thread is for fun more than anything. What kind of female (or male) should be attracted to people who post here based on their ride? What kind of woman would be attracted to a guy who squirrels away 1960's Pontiacs. or collects Miatas, or drives an old Intrepid, or a Cobalt, or whatever.... This is our chance to make fun of ourselves... Who wants to fire the first shot? Chris

As I was emerging from slumber this a.m., I had a short movie flash in my head: I was driving my Cobalt here in Lancaster, PA. In my dream, Volkswagen's US headquarters is in my town. I was driving by the headquarters (a giant, non-descript brick and steel siding building without windows) when I noticed out of the corner of my eye a white, 4-door VW Beetle driving through the parking lot, flickering in and out of sight was it passed between parked cars. I instantly thought of photographing it for C&G with my phone, so I turned in to the restricted parking lot and made a loop, searching for the prototype. Then I saw it, parallel parked in front of the building by …

PHOENIX – Arizona's governor vows the state's tough new law targeting illegal immigration will be implemented with no tolerance for racial profiling, but at least two advocacy groups were preparing legal challenges and Mexico has warned that the law could affect cross-border relations. Republican Gov. Jan Brewer on Friday signed into law a bill that supporters said would take handcuffs off police in dealing with illegal immigration in Arizona, the nation's busiest gateway for human and drug smuggling from Mexico and home to an estimated 460,000 illegal immigrants. The law requires police to question people about their immigration status — including asking for identificat…

I think about this every now and then. As for the 3800 V6 engine by Buick, once it went transversely mounted, received roller hydraulic lifters and fuel was delivered via port injection, it became one of the best engines ever. I'm closing in on 270,000 miles on the old car and still love the car and this engine. However, I also think back to a 1970 Pontiac LeMans coupe my Dad owned. He never thought much of Pontiac, until he bought this car. He loved "la Pohn-tee-ak"...and so did our Australian Shepherd. It had the 250 inline 6 with a 1-barrel car and NO air conditioning, so the engine compartment was a mechanic's dream, with every plug easily accessible and lots of …

Hello everyone! I have been very busy with life lately so I haven't been posting as much as I would have liked to lately. Anyways I was talking to some people in my family and we got talking about what the next ride could would be. Some backgroud information... My brother and his wife will be in the market for a new car soon (before the end of this year) more than likely and have two very different options to select from. They recently became empty nesters and now have the freedom to really drive whatever they would like. My brother who is interested in cars, (not crazy like me) wants something with some serious "balls" as he would put it. That is his first thing on his…

Outlook: cloudy The Economist NORTHERN Europeans will not forget the name Eyjafjallajokull in a hurry, even if they may have trouble pronouncing it. Monday April 19th marked a fifth day of jet-free skies over a huge swathe of the continent as a result of the eruption of the Icelandic volcano, which began pumping significant quantities of ash into the sky last Wednesday. That fine volcanic ash could pose a risk to jet engines, which have cut out in the past after exposure to similar volcanic material. Many of Europe’s busiest airports remained out of action. Britain’s National Air Traffic Service, an organisation that co-ordinates air travel, said that the flight ban wo…

I was curious if something struck you guys about the new Subaru commercial... Its a 2009 Subaru at the junkyard and the guy visits it in his new 2010 Subaru... thinking "My Subaru saved my life"... He looks over the car... then unscrews the gear shifter to keep as a reminder. Of course, this is probably something most people don't consider, but since he has a new car, the insurance as most likely bought his old car... and at that point, the insurance company owns the whole car. Sure, you can remove personal belongings, but not car parts. Usually, you see these cars at the Pick-a-Parts with large stickers from the insurance companies pointing out that parts are not to be…

...a baby fox that is. The thing just wandered across the lane as I was heading home. I stopped the Tahoe and got out to check it out and the little tyke ran right up to me and followed me around. I called the other folks on the property and they all came to see. Finally, my employers' son-in-law just picked him up, and then handed him to his wife. She tucked him inside of her vest and he immediately went to sleep. Interesting end to the day.
