So I mentioned to a coworker the other day about the Saab 9-3 Sportcombi and he was like "Ewww Saab? Don't think you want to get one of those". I read the other thread about the theory on poor quality ratings, but what's the real deal here? Have there been that many complaints and reliability issues with Saabs as of late? Especially enough to cause this sort of stigma? I would like to consider this for a purchase in another 6-12 months, but don't want to regret the purchase shortly thereafter. Which brings up another question...how well do Saabs retain their trade-in value?

By Mike Harrison Dec. 20 (Bloomberg) -- Spyker Cars NV today said it has submitted a renewed offer for General Motors Co.’s Saab unit. “An 11-point proposal had been submitted to GM, addressing each of the issues that arose during the due diligence process” which will “remove each of the obstacles that were standing in the way of a swift transaction,” Spyker Chief Executive Officer Victor R. Muller said in a statement. GM last week said it will shut the money-losing Saab unit after talks collapsed on a sale to Spyker, the second failure in less than a month to keep the 72-year-old Swedish brand alive. GM and Spyker decided there was “no point in carrying on” after …

The base 9-3 2.0T will start at $28,385 in the United States, an increase from the $26,995 MSRP of the '07 model. The Aero model, which includes a turbocharged V6 engine, starts at $35,365, about $1,800 more than the '07. Spied: 2008 Saab 9-3 These two photos are the ones that give us the most insight into what we'll be looking at with the MY2008 Saab 9-3 range. I've got to say, the first impression is bloody striking and just magnificent. This is just the aggressive look the 9-3 needed. The latest incarnation of the 9-5 was a little divisive (to say the least!) but so far, every reaction to this image that I've read has been totally positive. The Aero-X influence is unmissable and beautifully applied to the car. Not only does the rounded pressing on the hood give the headlamps some aggressive eyebrows, it is also reminiscent of the old clamshell hoods of Saabs past (Vector 220 points o…

John Revill Automotive News Europe June 19, 2008 15:11 CET Production of the Saab 9-3 will remain in Sweden, a General Motors Europe spokesman said today. Media reports had suggested that production of the next-generation 9-3 would move to GM Europe's Opel plant in Ruesselsheim, near Frankfurt, Germany, from Saab's Trollhattan, Sweden, factory. To compensate for not getting the 9-3, GM Europe will add production of the Saab 9-5 and a compact car at Ruesselsheim. "It is good news that Ruesselsheim will get an extra model, a third shift and that the 9-3 production will remain in Saab's home country," said GM Europe spokesman Joerg Schrott. GM Europe has not…

Saab seems to be the cat of the automotive industry with the number of lives it has. Last we heard from the Swedish company, the company was waiting on approval on a deal with Pang Da and Youngman. However, General Motors was concerned with the deal due to technologies used in Saab vehicles ending up in competitor hands. Now, a new deal to save Saab is in the works. Saab's parent company, Swedish Automotive is in talks with Youngman and a bank in China (possibly Bank of China). The plan according to SaabsUnited is to have Youngman hold 19.9%, the bank with 29.9%, and Swedish Automotive holding the rest. The plan is reportedly in GM's hands, awaiting approval before h…

SAAB Post Show Event Only about half of any major auto show actually takes place on the convention center floor. To get a closer look at the action journalists are usually invited to after show events. I attended one such even hosted by Saab to show off more of the new 2011 Saab 9-5. The Car: Before I get to any event details, let me talk about the car. The new 9-5 is simply stunning in person. It has a silhouette and roofline unlike anything else on the road today, yet it is instantly recognizable as a Saab. The interior feels at once retro 60's chic and ultra modern at the same time. While you can pick out the GM Epsilon II parts if you look closely, anyone u…

I have recently been driving a pristine, '01 Saab 9-3 5door, which was recently acquired by my company. Fun, roomy and very practical (my 70lb. dog can fit in the rear hatch area)...I really like the car...everything works, except a burnt out headlamp. Not a big deal, right? Here's the issue: EVERY time you turn on the car, it's messanging center describes ALL of the car's current problems (low washer fuid, headlamp out)...in big, bold letters that sit there if you don't use the radio or manually clear them... So, as a consumer, you are reminded of flaws each time you sit in the car. Could this influence people filling out surveys? I think it could. My wife notices …

Saab AlcoKey to be Tested on Swedish Roads Sweden has one of the best road safety records in Europe, but drinking and driving remains a serious hazard, accounting for about 35 per cent of all crash fatalities in Sweden last year (2005). Now Saab is ready for field trials in 100 cars of its innovative Saab AlcoKey, a simple, reusable device that fits conveniently in the pocket or handbag. As compact as a small mobile phone, the Saab AlcoKey module incorporates a cap covering a mouthpiece where the driver provides a breath sample before starting the car. A radio transmitter then sends a signal to the car’s electronic control unit, which will either allow the car to be s…

From an article on itv-motoring.com Saab's New Diesel by David Morgan (26 Sep 05) Saab could be the first European manufacturer to hit the market with a "boxer" turbodiesel engine. The alliance between Saab and Subaru which created the Impreza-based Saab 9-2X for the US market is about to signal the return of the 96 badge in Europe - and it looks set to be their first 4x4 SUV with a horizontally-opposed diesel power plant. By late 2007 British Saab drivers will be able to order the Swedish car maker's first crossover 4x4 - the Saab 9-6X. The all-wheel drive five-door will be closely related to the Subaru B9 Tribeca (pictured) which is built in India…

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/05244/563326.stm Saab wagon's interior uninviting Thursday, September 01, 2005 By Don Hammonds, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Saving money on production costs is clearly a top priority with automakers, which means the days when each make would have its own engine, frame, body and styling are gone, replaced with one platform and set of components to make a wide variety of models. Saab Saab's 9-2X retains the carmaker's identity with its front end, side profile and sharp alloy wheels. That's OK, I guess, as long as each product still has a separate identity. But it can be a problem when identities don'…

By Jamie LaReau Automotive News / October 28, 2005 DETROIT-- General Motors is considering a crossover vehicle for its Saab brand. GM would base the vehicle on a Cadillac concept and build it on a new, mid-sized crossover architecture. GM will not say when it plans to unveil its concept model of a Cadillac crossover. But the company is thinking of designing a "highly differentiated" version of the Cadillac vehicle for Saab, says Robert Lutz, GM's vice chairman of global product development. The company is examining a business case for the Saab crossover, Lutz said at a press event here this week, by weighing GM's investment against the vehicl…

GM focusing on Saab revival, sales chief says LaNeve says 'Born from Jets' ad campaign addresses Saab's lack of identity Dee-Ann Durbin / AP Auto Writer ORLANDO, Fla.-- General Motors Corp.'s vice president of sales and marketing said a new ad campaign and fresh vehicles should help the company's luxury Saab brand. "We don't need Saab to do a lot of volume. We just need them to do better than they've done," Mark LaNeve said at a conference sponsored by J.D. Power and Associates. Saab has struggled since GM acquired it in 2000, and sales have been weak. The Swedish automaker posted a 1 percent sales increase in 2005, on par with the industry but down compared to compe…

[source: Motor Authority] GM ties with Saab will remain in future models The future of Saab is starting to look much brighter, thanks in part to important concessions from General Motors to help it build and design its own range of cars in the future, as well as a likely extension from Swedish courts for its restructuring deadline. For a while it looked as though Saab may go the same way as Pontiac, but its chief engineer is confident the brand will be able to survive without GM. The GM concession being referred to is the investment in the Saab brand over the past few years, which has led to the company today having the best equipment, tools and enginee…

Date Posted 11-11-2005 TROY, Mich. — Saab USA general manager Jay Spenchian has told Inside Line that a new Saab sports car spun off the Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky is "not in the plans." Earlier this year, Spenchian hinted that a new sports car was under consideration as "maybe one of our upcoming concepts." GM insiders had said a Saab derivative off the Solstice's Kappa platform was a possibility. The next Saab concept will be a 300-horsepower 9-5 BioPower sedan that will be powered by a 2.3-liter turbo engine and run on ethanol. It will be shown at the Los Angeles auto show and the Detroit auto show in January. Saab introduced a version o…

People spend hours nursing draft beer and warm plates of meat. Two hours, two lagers and a dozen meatballs later, we realize the best part about the 2006 Saab 9-5, which we drove yesterday on the two-lane roads north of this historic city. It's still a Saab. Svante Kinell, brand manager for the 9-5, says there are 1,367 changes on the 2006 model, but these changes haven't squashed that intangible something that makes it a Saab. They've just made it a better Saab. Over a Thousand Changes Although numerous, t…

Well, I bought a new 2006 SAAB 9-5 from my employer about half a year ago and I had it detailed in the shop today. I got out there to get my car and the paint was totally stripped from my hood logo! Now, I know all the workers back there and they would not do that on purpose so it was probably a defective logo. As I looked at some more SAAB's in the shop (the ones which are a year or 2 old), I noticed the same thing happening to all the logos. Yet, when I see the SAAB-Scania logos, they are as blue as can be. Has GM made these logos cheaper? To me if the logo paint peels off, then that's pretty bad advertisement (especially on a 6 month old car). By the way, other than th…

I think it looks great, and not just for its age. It's funny how good designs grow on you. I initially thought the updates were pointless and backwords, but then I started to understand it from the designers' point of view, their intention and concept, and all of a sudden there's this epitome, "OH, so that's why they did it" moment. The question is whether or not the public will appreciate it. The styling might age better than an instant "OMFG thAts HOTTZZ!" design, but the car itself might die from poor sales.

The ignition was in the floor. It had a rear hatchback, not a trunk. The hood was hinged at the front, so it opened away from the windshield. And many of its owners — including Jerry Seinfeld’s character on his long-running sitcom — were intensely loyal. Auto enthusiasts across the country were dismayed by the news Friday that General Motors was planning to shut down Saab, the Swedish carmaker it bought two decades ago, after a deal to sell it fell apart. Even with its modest and steadily declining sales, Saab long stood out as a powerful brand in spite of itself. “It wasn’t designed to be a fashion statement,” said Ron Pinelli, president of Autodata, which tracks ind…

The Car Connection on the Saab 9-5 Very nice. I love the nip/tuck that Saab performed on the 2006 9-5's skin. I've never seen anything as menacing as the gouged-out eyes look with the chrome outline. William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com January 18, 2012 The Saab story is only getting worse and worse. Last week, Saab reportedly sent 100 new vehicles to the crusher as part of the receivership process. The crushed cars include some pre-production 9-5 SportCombis and 9-4Xs. Reports say that Saab was able to save one of the 9-5 SportCombi for the Saab museum, which conflicts with reports of the Saab museum being closed and going into liquidation. The museum, which has a collection of 120 different Saab vehicles are now up for sale. According to BringATrailer, if you want your chance to get your hands on a piece of the museum, you have to submit a bid by J…

...going to finally get rid of all that cheap-ass rubber molding on the sides of their cars and switch to body-colored? Honestly, it makes the 9-7X more appealing because of its lack of rubber. Check out the pic on SAAB's main page - it looks sort of hot. Seriously, guys. Its not an '87 Ciera...

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com June 12, 2013 A U.S. District court judge has dismissed the $3 billion lawsuit filed by Spyker on behalf of Saab against General Motors last August. The suit alleged GM blocked the sale of Saab's assets to Zhejiang Youngman Lotus Automobile Co and eliminate a potential rival in the growing Chinese market. "General Motors had a contractual right to approve or disapprove the proposed transaction. The court is going to grant the motion to dismiss the matter," said U.S. District Court Judge Gershwin Drain during a hearing in Detroit. Judge Drain said GM acted legally in order to protect its intellectual property and that it…

Linkity Saab 9-5 Upclose Heavily Camouflaged Mule Spotted The Saab 9-5 is long overdue for an overhaul, with the current model first hitting the streets as far back as 1997. A totally redesigned model was rumoured to make an appearance last year but its release was pushed back due to limited resources at Saab and the introduction of the facelifted 9-3. Saab's parent company General Motors has since confirmed that the car will now make its debut later this year along with the new 9-3X crossover. Underneath the heavy camouflage of this prototype for the new 9-5 is a heavily revised version of GM's FWD Epsilon II platform, which is also shared by Opel fo…

Boston, MA – The new 9-5, Saab’s flagship car, will be unveiled for the first time to the North American press and public on Friday, November 4 at the New England International Auto Show in the Boston Bayside Expo Center. “This is a very fitting venue for the debut of the new 9-5 in North America,” said Jay Spenchian, Saab USA general manager. “Saab launched its American automotive activities almost 50 years ago in New England, and it is still a core area for our business. Over 400,000 Saab 9-5s have been sold so far worldwide, many in the Boston area. The debut of the new 9-5 here is a tribute to its loyal following in this area.” Simultaneously, Saab USA released pric…

Still Flowing Toward the Mainstream Saab aims for sport touring sedan experience with its new 9-3 lineup. Monday, February 6, 2006 By Frank Aukofer - Scripps Howard News Service Like a flamboyant circus acrobat relegated to a support role, Saab has lost some of its audience appeal. Sales of its sport sedans and wagons, the 9-3 and 9-5, have slipped. To bring back some of the luster, the Swedish company added a couple of new models, though they weren’t really Saabs. One is the 9-2, a reworked version of the Subaru WRX, and the other is the 9-7X SUV, based on the Chevrolet Trail Blazer. For 2006, it also has added the 9-3 SportKombi, a four-door station wagon version …

I dunno why but the other Aero X thread was locked, which sucks. So i wanted to make a thread to post some cool pics of the Aero X and some thoughts about it. I'm sure a lot of people have seen these already, but they're still sweet to look at. Check out that altimeter style speedo...it's sweet. This is what Saab should have, as like a halo car. I mean, it's the only car to really back up the "Born from Jets" slogan. It looks absolutely stunning. I'm sure they won't build it but you know...they could if they really wanted to. Granted, building it off the RWD Corvette platform goes against the FWD tradition of Saab...but you know I think building the Saabar…

By Niklas Magnusson and Ola Kinnander Nov. 16 (Bloomberg) -- Saab Automobile AB dealers in the U.S. are running out of new cars after the Swedish carmaker cut production to conserve cash and prepare for its first new model in seven years. “We have about 10 Saabs left, and they won’t last long,” said Ivan Goodwin, sales manager at Jim Ellis Saab in Atlanta. “It’s going to be a big problem, but there is nothing we can do about it.” Saab, which General Motors Co. is selling to an investor group led by Swedish sports-car maker Koenigsegg Automotive AB, has slowed assembly to retool its Swedish factory to build the new 9-5 sedan starting next year, spokesman Eric Geers sa…

Okay first off I will be looking for another car in the next year or so... I was wondering if anyone could give me the link to GM Photo/Wieck for the Saab 9-5 Sport Combi? I would just like to see some super huge photos of it. I can only get 11 up myself but I have a feeling there are more and for some reason or another I do not have acess too. I would also like the link for all the new 2006-2007 Sedan 9-5 photos too. I would just like to get a really good look at the car. I am considering only GM vehicles and would like a SUV/Wagon type vehicle. The Saab 9-5 Sport Combi used in a 5spd speaks to me (2006 only). I also have thought about Buick Enclave, Chevy Equinox Sport …

The Saab Saga Continues: GM Threatens to Shelve 9-4x By "black-knight" C&G Editor/Reporter 8th November, 2011 If you've been following the story of Saab since GM cut its ties with the Swedish automaker then you'd know that things are not all well and good in Scandinavia. However, things may only continue to get worse. Recently, Saab CEO Victor Muller, who has risked everything to continue the Saab legacy (going so far as to sell Spyker, the sports car firm that brought him good fortune), announced that Chinese automakers were interested in supporting Saab with a fifty-fifty partnership. Then, not too long after that, those same Chinese autom…

The agreement does not change the status of Saabs still under GM warranty coverage. Model year 2010 and and 2011 owners will be covered starting in 2013. Saab To Head Into Bankruptcy Today? William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com October 11, 2011 Saab could be heading into bankruptcy today, if a report from Autocar is to be believed. According to the story, £60 million loan ($94M USD) from Chinese automaker Youngman Automotive is likely to be denied by the Chinese government. The reason why is due to the deal not having any intellectual property rights being acquired. Saab has been waiting on a £60 million loan from Youngman and an additional £210M ($328M) from Zhejiang Youngman Lotus Automobile and PangDa Automotive to help pay off debts and workers. The only problem is the Chinese government…

With Saab heading into bankruptcy, companies are coming in to snap up pieces of the brand. Hans Bergqvist, the administrator in charge of liquidating Saab told Swedish publication NyTeknik that many companies are interested in Saab's assets. Berggvist did confirmed that one of the companies interested is Youngman Automotive. This should come as no surprise as the company tried to save Saab until the last minute and has invested tens of millions of euros to help pay for wages and taxes. A spokesman for the company said that it was primarily interested in the Phoenix platform that would have underpinned the next-generation 9-3 and possibly other technologies that didn't i…

However, things are beginning to look up for Saab. They have announced a partnership with Chinese distributor, Pang da Automobile Trade Co., which netted Saab 30 million euros. Now, it looks li…

The Saab name and logo are under control of defense company Saab AB and truck maker Scania, and National Electric Vehicle Sweden has to ask for permission to use it. That is under discussion right now," Scania spokesman Hans-Ake Danielsson told Automotive News Europe this week. "We have to protect our good name and brand. We have to be sure the new owner…

Did anyone see Autoline Detroit this past weekend? They had on Jay Spenchian, General Manager of Saab Cars USA. After I watched the show and heard what this guy had to say I thought about it for a split second and...Saab is doomed if they have people like this running the show. This guy is part of the reason Saab is not doing as well as it should be. Saab's Sad Story Part 39 - Is The End Nigh? William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com August 16, 2011 If you're heading out to the Frankfurt show this year, one automaker you will not see is Saab.
