the onion is always good for a laugh. PENSACOLA, FL—Harold Enderby's friends say that when he first saw the Navy's televised announcement that the Flight Demonstration Squadron, better known as the Blue Angels, would be holding open tryouts for the first time in its history, the lifelong aviation buff turned to his fellow sanitation workers at Doug's Dugout Bar-N-Grill and said, "Mark my words—I'm going to be a Blue Angel if it's the last thing I do." And this Sunday, that dream came true for an incredible 43 seconds, as Enderby got the chance to fly the famed Blue Angels' F/A-18 Hornet directly into the tarmac during the first day of the Navy's most dramatic—and colo…

My friend just crashed his Mazda, and now end up with a G6 rental. He was telling me he has a V6, so I'm suspecting it's a 2007 with the sport package, i.e. 17" wheels. So if I swap my 16s on and take the 17s, will they catch us and make us pay??

The Beginning It was Fall of the year 2004, as I looked for my first car. I really wanted a Fiero. I looked for one left and right. I knew it was a longshot, but I would constantly dream of it and had hopes it would become a reality. Soon enough, the idea was shot down by my parents, only after agreeing to it earlier. I wasn't happy, needless to say, but my search continued into the Winter. My dad would always buy the weekly Trade book, looking for deals. Soon enough, we came across an ad for a 1995 Grand Am GT with a manual transmission for $1000. My thoughts were "Atleast it's a manual". I wasn't overly enthusiastic, but I thought it would be a decent car. We called t…

Im thinking about getting a navigation system for my car... not sure which brand i should go with... my Dad has a friend whos a trucker that swears by Garmin but TomTom looks good too... but im open to any brand so long as they are reliable and have good service... anyone have any experience with a particular brand that you loved? negative feedback is also welcome... any problems had with systems will definitely aid my choice... thanks

The Saturn SKY was the car everyone was talkin about at the MTV VMA's as pop star Rieanna drove up in her new Saturn SKY, there was even a promotion for the SKY by on of MTV's reporters "Sway", as he drove down the block explaining the awards and the car, but there was also another MTV Awards using the Saturn SKY, Jimmy Fallen drove his Saturn SKY during the Awards in little skits MTV put together

It was a post about how the Gov't in the '70's allowed Big 3 dealership owners to sell Totota out of their dealerships, the same dealership network that cost GM, Ford, Chrystler billions to setup. All it cost Toyota was some paperwork and a couple signs. It had something to do with that, please help!

If Autonews' new future product predictions for GM are any indication, GM is going down the tubes in terms of desirable and unique products. Pontiac's going to sell rebadged Chevys, Saturn is getting products delayed or cut right and left, Cadillac and Buick are never going to turn their images around because they're going to keep old, uncompetitive cars around until they can't pay people to take them, and Chevy gets globalized and attempts to keep afloat by selling cars, not SUVs. Anyways, here is what I would do, knowing that it appears GM doesn't want to cut brands but rather just costs associated with them (see Pontiac being rebadged Chevy's). I'm trying to reduce o…

Empty Promises: The Top 10 Automotive Technologies We Didn't Get By black-knight (Editor/Reporter) for Cheers and Gears.com Saturday, 8th January, 2011 For over a century and a half, mankind has made amazing strides in automotive technology. The car itself has been an amazing tribute to just how far we as human beings will go to keep our spot right on top of the food chain in the grand scheme of things and to how ingenuitive we are to keep solving problems. However, we sometimes don't exactly lend well to ourselves and push the envelope as far as we have in the past in the name of invention and innovation, and with your help we have chosen a some of the high-tec…

Hey everyone! There's going to be a vintage carshow at Lexington's Keeneland horsetrack this Saturday from 10am-4pm and I was just curious to know if anyone is going to be there? Its only $15 entry so I'll probably go, should be cool. Radio commercial this morning said that they have 5 classic Corvette's on loan from the GM Heritage Museum, including a Mako Shark. From looking at the 2005 show winners on their website: http://www.keenelandconcours.com/ They apparently have EVERYTHING classic, from Porsches to Maseratis to Corvettes to Mustangs. For $15, can't really beat a good show like that. If anyone's going to be there, we can maybe have a meet'n'greet or something,…

My thread about letting your kid practice motor sports seems to be a success, and most people there say they would let or even encourage their kid/s to get involved into such an activity, so the next question is... how much does it cost to give a kid a shot at some of the cheaper options, like go - karting? How often do those things break down anyway?

That's right. I've moved. Over the past few weeks, we moved from Lexington, Kentucky to a small town about thirty minutes away, Berea. We basically moved here room by room and got every box and bit of furniture here in a week's time. The computer was the last thing to go (along with the living room furniture) and it gave me the chance to be here without going away for a long period of time. We just got everything in place on Friday and finshed mowing the lawn yesterday, so we're all set and I'm ready to shoot the $h! about it. The house we moved to is located a mile from a junkyard, A&A Salvage. I know they've probably got over ten acres of cars…

OK, some strange situation arose for my G6. I talked to my dad, and since we wanted to lose the dependency on the co-lessee, my dad is now financing me instead, and we are going to cash purchase it. Something to do with the insurance stuff. However, I called the dealer today in order to deal the price of the car again, and all of a sudden I was told that the saleslady I was dealing with is no longer with the dealership, and now I find myself dealing directly with the sales manager. Things were wierd. I sent her numerous e-mails in the past week, none of them got replied. About 2 days ago, when I got worried about my deposit, I went in to confirm the status of my car, sh…

Hi guys..... I had a mishap over the holidays with the ol'Saab. He met a friend called "guardrail" who stripped him of all dignity. So I'm out looking for a replacement and since the next year is going to be relatively different in terms of motoring needs, I'm considering a fiew other choices.... oh, and I'm also on a tight budget so I need something that can be found under 5 grand. 1. Saab NG900 non-turbo ('94-'98) for the maintenance free aspect of not having a turbo 2. Jeep cherokee 3. Saturn SL2 4. Chevy S10 My dad wants me to get a silverado or an S10 so that we can use my truck instead of his brand new one when we go hunting and…

The last 4 weeks have been a rough patch for my sister and I... Our 17 yr old Yorkie Henry passed on March 7th (she drove back early from SC as I knew Henry was going down fast), and our 15 yr old Yorkie Ginger passed on April 4th after a heart attack at 3:30 am (she died as we were rushing her to the emergency vet). Both had been declining for a long time and were on heart medications for enlarged hearts. First time in almost 15 years without a Yorkie at home. Pic below of them from 2020 when they were healthy and in need of a grooming. We still have Beardsley (chi-terrier mix) and Raine (Australian Terrier mix). The exciting and anticipating is after about…

So today I am surrounded by my Japanese/Euro car nut friends at our local Autocross. One of the MINI guys, Allen chimes in "That new Buick Lacrosse is a Hot car!" and he says it in the reverent tone we used to use when I was a teenager and we were talking about GTO's and SS 396 Chevelles. The Suburu guys chimed in and talked about how beautiful the car was, and how much better it was than a Lexus. The Miata guys all talked about how nice the interior was, and the Honda guys were talking about how nice the powertrain was and how well built they thought it was. Mind you, at 44 I was the oldest guy of about 12 of us in the group. NONE of these guys is a real huge d…

Last night me and my two buddies went to a frat and then we headed over to a house party that was rather far away (about 20 mins walking from where I live). Anyways, when we got to the house this guy that we didn't know before gave us some cups and told us to say that we paid for them. So, my buddies got a cup of beer and then it ran out after I only got about a third of a cup, so we just kinda stood around and watched beer pong. Anyways, the guy that lives there got back about 10 mins later and asked me and one of my friends if we paid for the cups. We told him we did, and then he wanted us to show him who we paid. So we walked around the house and couldn't find the gu…

Something that has always bothered me about the Pontiac Solstice would be how they moved the placement of the arrowhead badge and the hood cutline from the concept car. The repositioning of the badge also gives the car more of a "cheeky" look that bothers me a little bit. Just something that I came to a full realization of while looking at my sig. Still a beautiful car, however, and it doesn't do much in the way of dampening my appreciation of the car.

Rethinking the Embargo Game Automakers' time-honored system of handing out early photos and specs of vehicles to the media and embargoing their release for maximum exposure during the Detroit auto show has been thrown asunder this year by the blogosphere and the heightened competition among media to be the first to show photos of hot new cars. So far this year, information about the Chevy Malibu sedan, Dodge Viper sports car, the Lincoln MKR concept and the Chevy Camaro convertible has leaked out early on the Web and in car magazines. On Wednesday, the issue reached new heights when photos of new Chrysler minivans, arguably the most important vehicles at this year's No…

Last Ocotber I posted a picture of a trailer that puzzled me when I saw it at a truck show and asked here if anyone knew what it was used for. Here's the picture from last year: Of course no one had figured it out, and online research didn't help (we were thinking military/tank hauling, but couldn't figure out how things "got on"). Fast forward to yesterday... I went back to the annual All-Mack show there again yesterday with hopes that the trailer would be on display (it was!). The owner wasn't in sight, but after waitintg a bit I did find a guy that knew the owner and what the trailer was used for - hauling large and heavy cranes. The guy went on to explain …

Same as below, but now my student is looking at used '92-'97 2-door Yukons (and probably Blazers/Tahoes). We found a '95 Yukon SLE 4wd online that he's intetrested in - white w/ blue cloth interior, 107k, used car dealer is asking just shy of $7k. These were my favorites, so I'm gonna be sad if and when he gets it (why? Because I'm not the one buying it! ). Any suggestions on what he should look for when he goes to inspect it? I know '96 & '97s used the Vortec V8 engines... any real advantage over the earlier '92-'95 non-Vortec engines? Also the '92-'95s used the floor shifter to engage the 4wd system, whereas the '96 & '97s could have the optional push-but…

"Suck, squeeze, bang, blow. These are the four cycles of the reciprocating, internal-combustion engine (ICE) Nikolaus Otto patented in the 19th century. The action of the intake valves that allow an engine to breathe and the exhaust valves that let it expel spent gases were, until very recently, defined by a shaft of eccentric lobes rotating twice as fast as the engine’s crankshaft. Cams still spin twice as fast as the crank in the modern engine, but advances like camshaft phasing, or changing the relative opening and closing of valves in relation to the crank position, thus improving efficiency and performance, are commonplace. Honda’s VTEC actually changes the cam…

This morning, my friends and I were witness to one of the coolest things in my area for some time. The local mothballed coal fired plant called Lakeview, a long-standing waterfront landmark in Toronto's west end, had its smoke stacks toppled! It looked surreal in person. They fell in a semi-slow-motion way, with a loud thud and plumes of smoke. Check out the videos shot by CTV News : http://toronto.ctv.ca/servlet/an/local/CTV...hub=TorontoHome

There is a club holding an event at the St.Thomas racetrack for Cavaliers and GM compact cars. The article from CanadianDriver states that GM will show off vehicles there including the SATURN AURA. I think I know where I'm going on Saturday. it is not to far from St.Thomas, Ontario which is fairly close to Buffalo and even Michigan if you dont mind the drive. It is probably a 2 1/2 drive from Detroit. Read the article to see where it is and it gives a link to the track's website. This would be great even for a little C&G meet if people show up. Here is the link. Gm Compact Car Show Details

Has anybody ever played this game before? My dad's always been interested in aviation and first bought Flight Sim 4 when I was a kid, back when it was in 16 colors and only four buildings were shown for the Chicago skyline. It had an add-on program where you could build your own airports and landscapes, so I built my hometown and most of Western Iowa. Then we upgraded to Flight Sim 5 around '95, and this was huge because it now had 256 colors, texture map scenery, and thousands of airports around the US. New York and Chicago had 3D buildings, but I think that was it. Then we bought Flight Sim 95 (for Windows 95), which was another big leap because it now had 3D terra…

So I was driving home from work last week, when my Yukon started making a thumping noise. At first I thought it was just a bent rim or something, but I would have only been so lucky. After checking out all the wheels and taking it for another drive, I noticed that it only happened under power. After talking to a few people and having them take a look it, we thought it might be the U joint. It looked worn, but after replacing that the sound was still coming from somewhere else. It sounded like it was coming from the rear end. We took a look in the rear end, and this is what we found laying on the bottom.... We decided that this wasn't something that could be do…

Today (Sunday the 13th) was a great day for car shows... the weather was awesome andthere was a "street rod" event at Canobie Lake Park, as well as the Endicott Estate car show where I showed my '59 Buick LeSabre last year, I actually it parked tailfin-to-tailfin with a '60 LeSabre 2dr hardtop. But I missed both of those shows... an a half dozen others. In fact, shockingly I was no where near a paved road. But it's all good because SpeedingPenguin, myself & a few buddies were up in thewoods of New Hampshire at (undisclosed location) "wasting" $200 worht of Ammo & eating $50 worth of BBQ'd hot dogs & cheeseburgers. I met with a couple today that lead Elgin's Jaycees, in part to see about a presentation they had in December (while I was ill) about starting one's own business. Turns out, that same couple went to high school with my sister ... it is a small world. Those of us into cars are a special breed. Many of us keep our cars as if they are another member of the family. So when we see friends or relatives mistreat their vehicles, it raises hairs on the back of our neck. What annoys you the most about these people? Is it: How messy they keep their car? I have a relative that just picked up a clean used Ford Explorer 6 months ago. I saw it when he first got it and while it is a 2006, it was clean and in decent shape. I saw it again over the holiday weekend and it was loaded with junk, brake dust all over the wheels and in need of a bath. Their disregard for for regular maintenance? Back in high school I h…

I saw this classified ad and thought of you. Figured I'd show you. For $600 and supposedly only needing a battery and a brake line, not to mention having 50k original miles, seems like a good deal. Clicky You're next step is to clean out your inbox, because it's full.

Jeez, seems like Chevy filmed this '72 Malibu as it cruzed through PA Dutch Country... what a nice looking car, that '72 Malibu. Does my eye spy a "350" badge on the fender next to "Malibu", or is it a "307"... <iframe width="480" height="360" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/pu-TnCo4yQ8?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

BBC Link Sudan man forced to 'marry' goat A Sudanese man has been forced to take a goat as his "wife", after he was caught having sex with the animal. The goat's owner, Mr Alifi, said he surprised the man with his goat and took him to a council of elders. They ordered the man, Mr Tombe, to pay a dowry of 15,000 Sudanese dinars ($50) to Mr Alifi. "We have given him the goat, and as far as we know they are still together," Mr Alifi said. Mr Alifi, Hai Malakal in Upper Nile State, told the Juba Post newspaper that he heard a loud noise around midnight on 13 February and immediately rushed outside to find Mr Tombe with his goat. "When I asked him: 'What are you doing t…

I don't know that I have ever started one of these, but I didn't see a December edition. Parked my Charger between a Tesla Model S & a Fisker Karma.\ Then Friday saw a CT6 with a Chinese character badge on the trunk under a "4.0 T" badge.

You know those surveys that maufacturers send you after you buy a car, and every time the dealer will pull out this card and tell you for a certain question about the dealership, they ask you to answer to be "Completely Satisfied" and claims it's very important, what exactly does that do to a dealership if you don't answer the "Completely Satisfied"? Just out of my curiosity.

QUERY: What projects are tough or easy for you to continue regularly? I have too many interests... ...writing, ...taking pictures, ...road tripping, ...driving my family of cars, ...hosting radio shows when able, ...collecting (models, HO scale train, legos, etc.), ...and others. For each interest, I have at least 1 related project in motion; I just never seem to have time to continue them on a regular basis. But, one project has been VERY easy to continue regularly. Since... [a] I've grown tired of radio stations playing the same songs over and over and over and over again [b...] my "winter warrior" 1979 Caprice Classic has a CD player (and) [c] I hardly …

http://www.gizmag.com/go/6245/ October 1, 2006 Researchers at the ETH Chair for Power Electronics have developed an electrical generator that spins at a world record 500,000 revolutions per minute (RPM) and scientists are hopeful they can achieve twice this speed to touch the magical million rpm. The matchbox-sized motor generates the equivalent of 100 watts, including the power electronics interface, and has an efficiency of close to 95 percent. Powered by a gas turbine, one tankful of fuel drives the generator for about 10 hours at peak 100 watt performance. These ultra small gas turbines could replace conventional batteries as a mobile power source and have a range …

Title is me. Still in IL for now, no certain plans for the next few weeks, but will be moving to Cincinnati. unless i have to find a job closer to there anyway. Either the Locomotive business is being terrible last and this year, or NRE may be crumbling.

The one day of the year I am allowed to take my camera to work... for an employee car show, and it rains like a S.O.B. So, I notice yesterday that I'm driving one of those crapbox Lincolns with the busted air shocks. The air shock on the right rear strut finally gave out, so I felt like my Olds was riding on just the springs as that part of the car rebounded jarringly after hitting any small deviation in the road surface. I take it to my buddies at Goodyear/Gemini and they run it up on the perch for me. Yup. Its the shock. Not only that, but the left rear is leaking. Not covered under my ValueGuard (of course) and they quoted me a price of $249 for a set of shocks, labor, tax, etc. I decided to just do it myself and enlist my father to help me (worked out the other way around :P ). I …

If I were to get rid of the Riviera and no one wanted to buy it, would it be possible to put the interior into my Delta 88? The reason I'm think about this is because my favorite part of this generation Riviera is the dashboard and interior as a whole. It's retro enough to where it could work with an older car and yet modern enough to have the features I'm now used to. The comfy leather seats, the center console and arm rest. The dash and doors panels becoming "one" Besides the obvious needed measurements, what other challenges would lie ahead in trying to do this?
