Number of birds killed by the BP oil spill: at least 2,188 and counting. Number of birds killed by wind farms: 10,000-40,000 annually. Number of birds killed by cars: 80 million annually. Number of birds killed by cats: Hundreds of millions to 1 billion annually. Don't worry there is some good news. Number of birds killed by fisheries: tens to hundreds of thousands annually (fortunately for the birds, some of these fisheries are now shut down).

Why going green won't make you better or save you money Washington Post Like most Whole Foods shoppers, David Bain thinks he is a decent citizen of Earth. His family buys mostly organic food. They recycle. He recently fortified his green credentials by removing a leaking oil tank in his yard. But here's a head scratcher: Though the Bains live in Arlington within walking distance of Whole Foods [CSpec plug: this is where I live!], they often drive there in an SUV that gets just 19 miles per gallon. He has noticed that his SUV is not alone in the lot. Does that make Bain a hypocrite? He paused before responding: "I could see how people would come to that conclusion, but…

There was a time, at its height, that GM owned around 60% of the vehicle market in the United States. There was talk of government intervention to prevent GM from becoming too big. My question to the group is: Let's say it is 2010, and GM still commanded such huge market share. What would we be driving? What manufacturers would be present here? What would competitors' lineups look like, with GM holding such influence over the overall market?

Allow me to introduce my daughter, Sierra Skye!! Born Wednesday, July 14th at 10:56 PM. Weight: 6 pounds, 13 ounces; Length: 20 inches. Mom and baby are both doing well at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital (Hamilton Township, Mercer County). Both big brothers, Justin (4) and Anthony (16), are very happy to have a sister. As for the name, it should be no mystery where "Sierra" comes from (still to this day I'm surprised the wife went along with this choice!), and the wife always liked Sky(e) (yes, from the roadster!) as a middle name. My last name begins with a "R", so that makes Sierra's initials SSR too!!

Simple question: What were you doing when your car was new? My current family... 1972: I was a year away from making my earthly debut. 1976: I was 3 years old. I welcomed my parents' first Monte Carlo to the family, a 1976 model that I "claimed" as "mine" in later years. I was also a year away from my first open heart surgery. 1979: I welcomed my baby sister to the world. 1981: I finished first grade in the spring; started second grade in the fall. 1987: I was in middle school ... and had to say goodbye to my best friend who died of an asthma attack. Former members... 1988: I finished middle school and entered the world of High School. I first started th…

There are rumblings in various states about legalizing pot. I think it's only a matter of time before it happens nationwide. So, I'm just curious, if pot becomes legal and generally available, would you start using it if you don't already? If you already use pot, would you use it more? I tried it a couple of times in college and didn't like how it affected me. I say legalize it if they want, but I won't be using it.

So, in your travels, have you ever seen a driveway with two totally opposite vehicles parked in it? I mean, you could figure, say, a Fusion and an F-150, for example, or a Cavalier and an S-10 Blazer. I was leaving my mom's place the other night and saw a shiny gray G3. And their second car, the one no one wants to drive? A black GLK. Post your discordant driveway sightings in this here thread right here then.

I bought a PS3. I've had the urge to lately, but wanted to wait until GT5 was finally released. Yesterday, I decided to act upon this urge and purchased one along with the game 'Fallout 3'. I'm hitting up Ebay for more games as I type. I probably should have splurged for the 250 GB model, but I figured I would never really use the extra disc space anyways and went with the cheaper 120 GB model. With my slow internet connection, I can't see myself downloading a bunch of extras. We have a well rounded household line-up now. PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, PS2, and even an old Sega Genesis. If I still had my Sega Dreamcast, it'd be even better. I'm looking forward to some fun gaming, …

In early August my girlfriend and I will be driving to Florida. Along the way we will be passing through Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia. We'll be heading through Alabama on the way back since we're going to stop and visit her niece near Huntsville. I've been to all mentioned except the deep south states like Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi, so it should be a fun trip. How inundated was Nashville with water? I was thinking that would be a great halfway point, but if it was anything like the flooding we had here two years ago, we'll probably stay somewhere else instead. I want to check out Atlanta, but I don't really know what there is to see o…

Lately I have picked up running / jogging after having been mostly inactive the past couple years (with the exception of lifting weights on occasion). I started off pretty hard, doing two miles and running about half of it and getting a little winded, but otherwise fine. The second time was easier, but my legs began to get a little sore and I started getting shin splints (however that has gone away). The third time I ran for 3/4 of the route and got home and my legs were spasming, and then sore for days afterward. This was about three weeks ago. Ever since then, I have been unable to run hard; I start running and the calf in my right leg feels weak to the point whe…

I spent the entire day yesterday on the beach at Assateague, near Ocean City, MD. For my trip home, I decided to come back through my old town of Easton, MD, to check out the GM dealership I worked at for 10 years before moving to PA in 2003. It went out of business and has since been sitting empty, I guess it's been about a year now. I was glad to see an area dealer group's name on the front of the building, and new Chevys and Cadillacs once again sitting for sale out front. I hope they can make a go of it, as the old owners were a local fixture for decades and the location is ideal.

For the longest time, pretty much the last 2 years straight, since graduating with my $$$ Mechanical Engineering degree from Villanova (worth every cent, honestly, even if technically...), I've been "trying to figure it out". Always wanted to be IN the car industry, but could never figure out how/where/with what, and even things like sales if brought up would get "no..." reactions. Trying to figure it out meant graduating without the selection of job offers lined up, and so forth. For the last 2 years of school, I had been interning every break from school with a home builder at the beach in Delaware. It was always fun, I knew what I was doing and took charge, once full …

It is hard to believe, but my nephew will be 2 years old this November. Watching him grow has been tremendously fun. My favorite story, thus far, happened earlier in June. I went to my sis/bro-in-law’s place to drop off something for my sister. I parked out front in the street and came in the side door by the driveway. As I opened the door, my nephew yelled, “Cort!” [He hasn't quite mastered "Uncle", it comes out ... "Unc ... Unc ... Unclcor"!] I heard my sister say, “How’d you know that was Uncle Cort coming in the house?” A bit later, we found out. As we were talking in the front room, my nephew walked to the front window, pointed, and said, “Cahr…Cort cahr.” …

The Newest Wonder of the World: The Ruins of Modern Greece WSJ ATHENS—Georges Kalaras used to view with pride the sports hall built near his home here for the 2004 Olympic competition in rhythmic gymnastics and ping pong. Now, he gets mad every time he jogs by. "Look, it's locked!" shouted the 38-year-old Mr. Kalaras, who works for the Athens city water company. Two stray dogs tangling with each other behind a padlocked metal fence accounted for the only activity in the complex, which seats 5,200 people. Mr. Kalaras figured the steel and glass hall, costing taxpayers $62 million, would provide recreational space in his neighborhood. Officials envisioned concerts or s…

I'm thinking about attending a solo autocross some weekend with the LS. Apparently Des Moines SCCA does them on a regular basis. I think it'd be fun as heck to do, but I don't know where to start and since I have no experience on a track, don't know if I'm going to make myself look like a fool. How welcoming are these events to novices? Am I going to be the only one with a stock sedan while everyone else has a tricked out sports car? How hard are these events on your vehicle?

Let me just say. F-U-C-K. Since that is out of the way, here's the story. Myself, Dallas, and my brother Zack decided to hit up NYC for a day. We left around 3 am to be there early and give us as much time possible. Pa was a breeze. NJ was until halfway through. After that it was traffic, traffic, and more traffic. Lots of bumper to bumper with random bursts of moving. Mostly stationary with a bit of 2 mph for a good hour. Things started to speed up again right before I-280 started. A little lane changing to get through traffic quicker and then we merged onto 280. Not long after that we came to another halt. Sped up again... and then suddenly the cars in front of me sto…

Rag, quick detail spray, scratch remover, touch up paint for 2 chips, gone. Still weird being under the bumper edge mostly...I think someone hit me in the lot. Rear camera alert...love it. ...there's a subscription-paid satellite radio service... with no commercials, genre-specific channels... and it's pretty good.... ...but the subscription-paid, satellite TV service is still LOADED with commercials, LOADED with repetition... and it SUCKS ?!?!?

When I was out to pick Albert up from work this evening, I saw a first generation Neon drive by... and thought to myself..."Wow! It's been a while since I've seen one of those!" Not that I like the Neon at all, but they were once incredibly common and I hardly ever see that version. I see similar vintage Cavaliers, Sunfires, and Escorts all the time.... What cars have you noticed aren't around much anymore?

Why buy a Mercedes if you really wanted a Cadillac? Hell his mechanic is ready to turn this thing into a Caddy right now!

If so, what was it? My one and only RHD experience (so far) was a Turner sportscar. It was manual and a race car - so it was a bit challenging. It would take me a while to become used to shifting with my left hand, I think.

The manual column shift thread made me think of this... I know a number of people my age (almost 40) and younger that have never driven a vehicle w/ a manual. I learned to drive w/ them, and drove Ford products w/ manuals most of the time for 14 years before getting my first automatic at age 30.

What happened to America's Middle Market Brands? With the demise of Mercury Ford Motor Company no longer has a mid-market brand. They are not unique in this marketing strategy nor are they alone in cutting brands over the last few years. Perhaps the most interesting point is all Automakers are moving away from mid-market brands. We saw this in 2000 when General Motors announced they would phase out the Oldsmobile division. GM cited slow sales and poor returns on investments made into Oldsmobile as the key reasons why the brand went under. Rick Wagoner told Sam Donaldson of ABC in an interview: "If everyone who is now telling me what a terrible thing I've done had …

Learned how to drive three-on-the-tree. '77 Chevy G10 (I think, it was a big van) Not nearly as awkward as I would have thought. It also kept up with traffic pretty well considering it was laden with old furniture and stuff going to Goodwill. I had to learn on the fly too, since the guy who loaned it to me just asked if I could drive a manual and threw the keys at me. The hard part was figuring out that what I assumed would be first was actually reverse.

Looking around the world, what do you guys think is the coolest car brand not currently sold in the USA? I nominate Citroen. Their designs are just so interesting and unique lately, it would be great to have them return to our country to shake things up.

Ever get that feeling? I enjoyed our little vacation. Boy, I needed that.... Anyways, I am putting stuff back into storage, only to find that someone broke into it. Just pulled the door right off. Pretty much took all the oil I had in there ( a few jugs of Penzoil Platinum, a mobil 1 jug, and a few quarts of my Napa syn), the washer fluid, and one of my tire wrenches.... Left the X mas stuff, though. It's a good thing I just changed the oil on all of my cars....

What, to you, is the best noise you've ever heard come from a car (or truck)? In your response you should, if possible find a video or sound clip for all of us to hear and enjoy it. I've thought about this one for a while. I love the sound of V8's. Ferrari V8s make some fantastic noise, however I generally prefer a deeper note. Top examples include the Corvette ZR1, Challenger SRT8, Mustang GT500, and V8 Vantage. I love V8's and plan to own one at some point. With that sound, the best sound I have ever heard is none of those. It's not a V8 either. The best sound for me comes from the Lamborghini Murcielago, specifically the LP670-4 SV. The way it revs and howls just mak…
