I will not be doing a major road trip this year, since I'm using that vacation time to attend a few different weekend gatherings/shows/cruises (about which I've posted); I hope to return to a week or 2-week long road trip in 2009. But ... Saturday, August 9, 2008 ... I'll be in the Pittsburgh/Johnstown/Holsopple PA area for a family reunion on Dad's side of the family. Around that reunion, I will take a "mini road trip" through Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland and northern Virginia. I have a TENTATIVE/skeletal itinerary ... let me know if you want to meet up anywhere along the way so that'll help me finalize the itinerary in the next couple …

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/conte...ml?hpid=topnews As the winds and water of Hurricane Katrina were receding, presidential confidante Karen Hughes sent a cable from her State Department office to U.S. ambassadors worldwide. Titled "Echo-Chamber Message" -- a public relations term for talking points designed to be repeated again and again -- the Sept. 7, 2005, directive was unmistakable: Assure the scores of countries that had pledged or donated aid at the height of the disaster that their largesse had provided Americans "practical help and moral support" and "highlight the concrete benefits hurricane victims are receiving." Many of the U.S. diplomats who rece…

A friend of mine owns a 2002 Honda Odyssey. At the time of purchase, he took an extended warrentee, from GE. Two weeks ago, his transmission failed; requiring the installation of a rebuilt unit. The thing is, when installing a rebuilt unit, Honda suggests replacing the transmission PCM (power control module), at a cost of almost 1k. GE picked up the cost of the transmission, but not the computer. But since my friend is required to use a new PCM, shouldn't the warrentee cover its' replacement? Anyone have any suggestions? Also, does anyone know of any popular Honda forums, where I might also pose this question? Thanks in advance!

Very breezy and downright cold for June 21st, with partial high clouds. Like last year, we're all going to Dad's. We'll bring the food, he'll grill it. T-bones, big ol' potatoes, corn on the cob, salad, and some jalapenos to halve, top with sharp cheddar and grill (YUM). Sons, daughters and dads, what will you do today?

Dang! I spotted my first prototype today, but I had no camera (I had 3, but they were all used up; of all the luck!!) I managed to see the rear and a bit of the doors, but since itn was driving fast down the highway, it was hard to tell. My guess: The NG Mercedes E-Class.

Last Ocotber I posted a picture of a trailer that puzzled me when I saw it at a truck show and asked here if anyone knew what it was used for. Here's the picture from last year: Of course no one had figured it out, and online research didn't help (we were thinking military/tank hauling, but couldn't figure out how things "got on"). Fast forward to yesterday... I went back to the annual All-Mack show there again yesterday with hopes that the trailer would be on display (it was!). The owner wasn't in sight, but after waitintg a bit I did find a guy that knew the owner and what the trailer was used for - hauling large and heavy cranes. The guy went on to explain …

Yeah, 02.20.2006 looks sweet, but it isn't. First, I wake up after having a dream my mom was divorcing my dad.. for my boss. She tells me in the dream that, "Well, I don't know what to do. I'm 100% in love with one man and 400% in love with another. I'm 100% in love with you and 400% in love with Jeff [your boss]" Then I preceded to walk into work and tear up the entire backroom, leaving with two fists of blood. Analysis: Holy $h!. Terrible start to the day. So the day's started now. I go to work and end up arguing over the phone with my mom for over an hour because she's given me fifteen effing mixed signals over cell phones. I'm supposed to buy a new…

Supposedly, 07/07/07 is a lucky day. Not 100% "lucky" for me ... but, finally ... for the first time in 2007 ... my older 4 Monte Carlos saw road pavement! My sister, Joy, came over early Saturday morning so we could clean up her 2007 Dodge Dakota quad cab w/manual transmission. Once we got done, we ate lunch ... and then went to the garage where the older 4 are stored. We drove each car about 15 miles ... just enough to get gas in 'em. MPGs were anywhere from just over 12 to upwards of 17; I don't really count these, considering how long they've been sitting and the "false start" a few weeks ago. I drove the '72 and '79; sis drove the '81 and '76. I would've liked…

On rt252 not far from my place. Somehow a BMW X5 ended-up being 90 degrees out from the roadway with its nose up a 45 degree embankment after a collision with a Ford Explorer and possibly another car. The X5 was entirely off of the road with its nose against a tree. Must have been something to see happen, the physics of it all puzzle me. Be safe everyone.

I'm going to Italy next semester from January through April for our 4th year architecture study abroad trip. I'm getting excited about it, but I still have a lot of preparing to do before I leave. I have the passport all taken care of, and our class is getting Visas in mid-October. We'll be primarily in Rome, but we'll also take trips around Italy and we get some free time off to travel to other countries if we choose. Anyway, I'm just wondering in general from people who have been to Italy or Europe what it's like? Any tips or things I should know/avoid? I've heard you have to buy a power adapter since their outlets run on a 220V wattage. Also, do ATM cards here i…

First of all, I would have had Blake go home during the Bee Gee's week. Then, I'd have sent LaKisha home, leaving Jordin and Melinda going head-to-head in the finale. Who could have won between them, I would not care. Melinda has more experience and a larger vocal range than Jordin, although they both have incredible voices. Melinda might have had the better voice, though. Jordin has a younger presence, and still a phenomenal voice for 17 years old. SHe is more current than Melinda, though. Either of them woudl work, so Jordin's victory was well-earned. Now, regarding the actual Top 4.... LaKisha had the ability to stay another week, so I wasn't thrilled tos ee her…

I would like to introduce to you all the newest member of my family, Buddy: He is a Shih Tzu and was born on January 27. We found him Saturday night at a puppy store that is owned by the same guy that we bought our other dog, Benji (Lhasa Apso) from 12 years ago. Buddy was picked up yesterday afternoon and has been a pure joy to have as a part of our family. Benji is adjusting to the new puppy, however he appears not to be too thrilled right now On the otherhand these two have formed quite a bond: Ah, a boy and his dog...

You may have noticed on the front page a new block with the three main social media networks in the upper right. Can I ask a favor of you for all of those on Facebook and/or Google+? Can you like us on each of the networks you belong to? In the case of facebook, this is different than liking our Facebook page, this is liking the Website on Facebook. So even if you already follow our Facebook page, please use the button on the front page again. The number of "likes" a webpage has on Facebook is factored into our website ratings which I will explain in a separate post. Currently, we have 3 "likes" on facebook. Can we get to 25 "likes" on Facebook this weekend?

I found this Park Avenue Ultra on ebay. Clicky. This is the first I've seen of one outfitted like this. According the ad... "This Buick was a level 3 engineer's car at Buick. The custom additions are all from Buick. That includes 2 way auto sunroof, Custom fiberglass skirts all the way around the car, Two tone leather seats, two tone interior, custom rear sport seats with lumber support. Full console with Buick emblem embedded in it. Buick emblem on hood is embedded in hood." I'm quite curious about it. Something like this rarely gets past me, but this one did until now. Does anyone know anything about it?

Yesterday as I was sitting at work before my shift began, I saw an article in the paper about how GM was trying to get Ford to get rid of their old ads that claimed that their 5yr/60,000mi warranty was the "best of any full-line auto maker." As I closed the paper, I noticed a Mercury ad on the back page... with that very statement. I love irony...

Yesterday my friend and I stopped at Lowell Used Auto to see if they had any Prizms in the yard that I could get the parts I needed off of: trunk lid, rear bumper cover, bumper reenforcement, and the left tail light. I was telling how how it would be nice if I could find one the same color as ours...although it'd be highly unlikely...I've never see a Crimson Cloak Mica in the junkyard before. He told me he didn't think there'd be any way I'd find one the same color and that I'd have to settle for a blue or green or white or whatever one. Which I agreed. As e walked toward the area where the GM products, including Geos, I noticed a red surrounded by Metros and stuff..…

That's right. I've moved. Over the past few weeks, we moved from Lexington, Kentucky to a small town about thirty minutes away, Berea. We basically moved here room by room and got every box and bit of furniture here in a week's time. The computer was the last thing to go (along with the living room furniture) and it gave me the chance to be here without going away for a long period of time. We just got everything in place on Friday and finshed mowing the lawn yesterday, so we're all set and I'm ready to shoot the $h! about it. The house we moved to is located a mile from a junkyard, A&A Salvage. I know they've probably got over ten acres of cars…

Only a few block up the street I'm speeding up to catch the green light. Now, at 60mph. It changes yellow. > Well, I can take this little side road to the left and bypass the light. So, I notice yesterday that I'm driving one of those crapbox Lincolns with the busted air shocks. The air shock on the right rear strut finally gave out, so I felt like my Olds was riding on just the springs as that part of the car rebounded jarringly after hitting any small deviation in the road surface. I take it to my buddies at Goodyear/Gemini and they run it up on the perch for me. Yup. Its the shock. Not only that, but the left rear is leaking. Not covered under my ValueGuard (of course) and they quoted me a price of $249 for a set of shocks, labor, tax, etc. I decided to just do it myself and enlist my father to help me (worked out the other way around :P ). If there's anything that really makes me mad, it's when some degenerate goes and kills a cop... Especially when the officer is RCMP. It's kinda sad that all of the ones that have been gunned down in recent years have been green, in their 30s, with wives and families. That is until some f-ed up degenerate takes him away from them. Just one such thing happened in Hay River, Northwest Territories the other day. Now a Canada wide search is getting started and the FBI and INTERPOL are getting involved. They'll get him. Well,...there have been "rumors" of a new Stingray for awhile...but, yesterday I got a confirmation from a friend of mine at GM that indeed the STINGRAY is set to return. Based upon the solstice/sky platform, the new stingray will be introduced quite soon !!..or so it seems. GM has done several "production mock ups" of this model, which will expand the "CORVETTE" brand into a TWO Model line, & there may be More Corvette models in the future ! Another "tidbit" I was told is that GM is seriously considering bringing back the "GRAND PRIX"...possibly even the GTO !!! They may "return" as either Chevy or Buick models !!!!

This is kind of an odd question and I'm going to be a bit vague initially because I don't want to lead to a specific answer. About two years ago, my cholesterol level had gotten to the low end of what is considered borderline high, so my doctor recommended that I start taking a minimal dose of lipitor daily. I was very hesitant at first because I didn't like the idea of taking anything long term. After a long discussion with my doctor of the pros and cons I decided to go ahead and start taking it while I continued on my fitness program and watched my diet. It has worked out well so far. I take 10mg daily which is half of the smallest pill made. My cholesterol level…

Story: A boy and his family move from their home in Berlin to a strange new house in Poland, young Bruno befriends Shmuel, a boy who lives on the other side of the fence where everyone wears striped pajamas. Bruno is unaware of the fate of the Jewish prisoners or the role his own Nazi father plays in it. Excellent movie, with a surprise ending ...

I know this is way off topic here, but I figured *some* car nuts should know how to build things out of wood. I went to Home Depot and bought 12 pieces of spruce, 8 feet long each. I'm going to build a shoe rack and a laundry hamper. I cut 5 boards in thirds, and cut a sixth in 10 9-inch sections. The thirds go side by side with a 9-inch section at each end to form shelves. So I've used 1/2 of the wood so far. I want to build the sides and back (if necessary) out of as little wood as possible, so that my hamper can be bigger. Will 5 shelves screwed in to the vertical sides have strength? Will this design want to lean one way or the other, wobbling? If I do need a ba…

the REPUBLICAN PARTY just called me at home asking for money. Asking for 50 bucks...a REFUNDABLE donation (since when did they start doing that?). Anyways, the guy was an ass and kept going on and on. "well, your gas prices aren't exactly cheap right now, sorry" you should have heard the silence/huffiness on the other end. SERIOUSLY ARE THESE GUYS MORONS? i am a moderate. i go either way. but man, this idiot just has me leaning the other w…

Being home from work today, I had a little time on my hands, so I made this PowerPoint graphic of the '86 Grand Prix 2+2. I will post a pic of the Z06 I did some time ago as well. Nice part about these being PPT graphics is that when you scale them, they stay looking good. Either I need to figure out how to make money doing silly stuff like this or find better things to do with my time.

So this week I've been hauling a lot of junk into my favorite scrap metal yard, Ace Iron and scrap. Weird group of cars there... A group of Alfa Sedans...a bunch of older Benzes, from the 80's and 90's, some odd stuff... A Suburban with 24" expensive wheels that was in decent shape, expensive wheels left on the thing when it went to the crusher for some odd reason... A really clean 944 Porsche, that had a claw put through it's roof... Several clean FWD Cadillacs. a few with low mileage and nice... Several Jags... A WRX (2004ish) that had been built into a rally car of sorts....was crushed, so I couldn't get a good look at the cage...but somebody had a bad day racin…

Interesting article looking at the hidden environmental impact of the Hybrids. Prius Outdoes Hummer in Environmental Damage A quote from the article "Building a Toyota Prius causes more environmental damage than a Hummer that is on the road for three times longer than a Prius".

This is kind of a spin-off from a comment in the thread discussing the interest in Hummer by a couple companies from India: What would it take for GM to merge some brands? Take the whole clustering of brands (Buick-Pontiac-GMC for example) to the next level, and have them share a corporate shell and legal entity. Let's call it "GM Specialties" for now. Some thoughts: + Dealerships would have a contract with "GM Specialties", not the specific brands contained within. A Specialties dealership (auto boutique?) could order (or not order) any product from the Specialties' included brands, maybe with some requirements/standards as to how the products are displayed …

Well I just watched Tokyo Drift on a bootlegged dvd. and right after it i think Hmmm... I have a FWD beater with a new trans!. Lets destroy it. Oh god i think I drove around for about 2-4 hours doing e brake assisted drifts, spinning the tires while the engine is bouncing off red line while sliding at a 60º angle. Its so unpredictable tho. I thought i was almost about to crash my car a couple times. It will probably get old soon but its so fun. Although RWD is fun and controllable but, doing it in a FWD car is so risky. Any one else find drifting fun? this is true drifting not power sliding. Boot legged DVD are pretty good to I was surprised. The movie was decent bu…
