Saw an absolutely gorgeous 1974 Colony Park wagon cruising down the highway yesterday afternoon. The car looked to be immaculate. It was medium blue with the wood grain trim. I was trying to think how long it's been since I'd seen one of these in action...has to be at least a decade or two. Even my wife thought it was cool!

This past weekend was the 10th annual classic car show at the legendary Farmer's Market in Los Angeles. There was a whole strip devoted to Pontiac; the part of the market near Anthroplogie was Firebird central, while the north part of Gilmore Lane was completely about the GTO. The whole show was about American Iron and was a great time.

Hi guys!! My seat adjuster finally took a pooh on me. The motors are spinning but no movement. I haven't taken it apart yet because my son still drives it to work everyday. I've been hunting around the interwebs and I've read that 87 adjusters are different than the others, but I've also read that is only true on the Buick. It is buckets of course which also matters. Any ideas? I really would like to just have an entire adjuster assembly, even new if possible. I'm not afraid to spend some money on this particular part as my new husband is 6'7" and can't drive it until we get this fixed. Secondly, it is time to replace the lock actuators and while I'm there, the weak windo…

We are sentimental but no Australian brand is going to survive simply because it is Australian. No Aussie brands are more ingrained in the national consciousness than Qantas or Holden but the flying kangaroo is facing extinction as a long-haul, full-service carrier within 10 years and GM Holden may not even last that long. You don't have to look far to see why. This week, I'm flying to London and needed a one-way fare. Checking the Qantas website was once my benchmark and my habit but I was reminded again why it ceased to be so. By RON HAMMERTON GM HOLDEN designers have added at least one Buick model to the line-up of vehicles being crafted at their Port Melbourne studios, alongside those for Chevrolet and Holden. Existence of the confidential Buick design project was revealed to GoAuto at last week’s Detroit motor show by General Motors vice president of global design Ed Welburn, who was typically effusive in his praise of his Australian design team. While Mr Welburn declined to elaborate on the model or nature of the project, he said “some very interesting assignments” were in progress at Holden Design. “They are doing work for Holden, but they are also doing work for other brands as well –…

The loss of car manufacturer Holden would be devastating for South Australia, the state government says. Manufacturing Minister Tom Koutsantonis said if the car maker shut up shop it could result in the loss of 8000 jobs across the automotive sector. He said that would have both an economic and social impact. "When you couple those together it would be devastating for the state," he told reporters on Friday. "Could you imagine South Australia tomorrow with 8000 (extra) families without an income." The minister's comments appeared designed to up the ante on the state and federal oppositions, who have been less forthcoming in their support for Holden and the auto industr…

I've seen a couple last-gen Grand Am SE coupes around town lately without spoilers and with the multi-spoke aluminum rims. I still think they're handsome cars. I'd rock one with the GT Ram Air hood and the chromed GT wheels... it would be my very own Grand Am Formula 3.4. Only thing weird about those was the Mickey Mouse Ear dash.

Edmunds' Report Showing Pontiac Owners Sticking With GM William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com October 29, 2011 The big question for General Motors when they showed Pontiac the door was, would they be able to keep many owners from going away? The answer seems to be yes. Edmunds recently analyzed data to see where Pontiac owners are heading to pick up their new car. Almost 40% of former Pontiac owners stuck with General Motors, with 28.1% going with the Chevrolet. Most of that can be put on incentive programs in January and February of this year. Following behind GM is Ford with 9.4% of Pontiac owners, Honda and Toyota are next wit…

Took the TinIndian to Laughlin, same route we always go. Ran the 2.4L Solstice a bit harder then the ION-2.4L or the Kizzy 2.4L and did 26.4 mpg round trip. Thats hitting 100 plus on some of the two lane blacktop passing other cars. Fun to drive good for a weekend away. Thoughtfull packing by my wife let us put the top down when we got in the highcountry. It'll go to laughlin next time we go. Young fellow driving a pretty red Astra 3dr XR with fartcan tryed to keep up, but once we passed them out of Wittman AZ it didn't take long before they were a thing of the past.

Camaro Crucifixion, Take Two: T/A Depot's GT9 Goat by black-knight, C&G Editor/Reporter 11th, May, 2011 The Camaro-based insanity just refuses to stop as another evil force continues to make the Chevrolet Camaro a martyr to suffer for the sins of automotive customization. If being bombarded by all of the fifth-generation Camaro transformed into various second generation Firebirds last year (and trying to digest yesterday's 2010 Camaro Rat Rod) just wasn't enough to satisfy your warped and twisted automotive mind, this year those cheeky bastards over at Trans Am Depot have decided that the Camaro should get into it's '69 Goat costume and ride as a follow up a…

Holden Getting A Cruze Wagon? William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com May 30, 2011 If there is one question that GM Holden chairman and managing director Mike Devereux has been getting over the past few months, it would be this, Will the Holden Cruze overtake the Commodore one day? In which Devereux responds, “I’m happy to sell whatever cars Australians want to buy. If they want to buy more Cruzes, then I’m fine with that.’’ It's easy to see why people have been asking Devereux this question since GM has started building Cruzes at their plant in Elizabeth, South Australia. The Cruze has been skyrocketing the sales charts since being intro…

Commodore to get aluminium panels and electric steering as Holden greens large car 19 May 2011 By RON HAMMERTON Full article: http://www.goauto.com.au/mellor/mellor.nsf/story2/309C6A1C314B20F1CA25789500195BBC Note: In the US it's called aluminum and in Australia, aluminium. HOLDEN will become the first Australian car manufacturer to employ mass-produced aluminium body panels – most likely the bonnet and boot – to snip the fuel consumption of its next-generation VF Commodore due in 2014. The "light-weighting" exercise, plus a switch to electric-powered steering and new efforts to improve the aerodynamics of the top-selling Australian car, are expected to cut Commodo…

GM’s North American boss Mark Reuss says no to current ute, for now 21 April 2011 By BYRON MATHIOUDAKIS (Original goauto.com.au article) THE president of GM North America, former GM Holden boss Mark Reuss, has revealed that while the current VE Ute is unlikely to be exported to the US, soaring oil prices and general downsizing trends could see a future iteration end up in America wearing the Chevrolet bow tie. Mr Reuss said at yesterday’s New York motor show opening that he is watching the evolution of the massive American truck market with interest as consumers increasingly trade the expense and bulk of a full-sized ‘pick-up’ such as the Ford F-Series and Chevrolet …

GENERAL Motors vice-president of global design Ed Welburn has given the thumbs up to the next-generation Holden Commodore and confirmed that the Australian-designed Cruze hatch is being seriously considered for North American sale. Mr Welburn – an unabashed fan of the Holden Design team – told GoAuto at the Geneva motor show last week that he visited Australia last month to check on progress of the latest projects underway at Holden’s design studio in Melbourne. Asked if he saw the next Commodore, designated VF and due in 2014, he replied: “I did, and it’s the absolute right Commodore for that market. “I feel very good about it. GM HOLDEN has revealed that a decision on the generation-after-next Commodore – due from 2018 – will have to be made within the next 12 months or so, as the company moves forward with its family car options into the 2020s. The local GM subsidiary has also indicated it is pushing for a rear-wheel-drive design for that Commodore, despite some moves within GM to promote a front-wheel-drive switch for the big Holden. Holden chairman and managing director Mike Devereux told GoAuto on the eve of the North American International Auto Show in Detroit: “We have the best selling car in a very important market. “And we will do everything we can to make sure we design ‘a Commodor…

Here is the link to an auction for a really nice 1973 Mercury Cougar XR-7 Convertible (Other than admiring it, I have no affiliation with the seller or car): http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mercury-Cougar-XR-7-Convertable-/270679186974?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item3f05bc9e1e#v4-39 It is extraordinary for its rare color combination (very classy) and its clean undercarriage and under the doors--basically, it appears free of corrosion--quite uncommon for the seventies Ford products. The after market wheels give an attractive "stance" to the car also. Of course, in 1973, the neat sequential turn signals were still present. It was great how the Mustang and Cougar shared a…

Front-wheel drive on agenda for 2015 Holden Commodore as GM mulls alternatives 10 December 2010 By RON HAMMERTON GM HOLDEN chairman and managing director Mike Devereux has confirmed that a decision on the architecture for the next-generation Commodore due by 2015 will be made “fairly soon”. But General Motors insiders have told GoAuto that a rear-drive platform is not a certainty for the all-new version of the top-selling Australian car, with rival engineering groups within GM canvassing more fuel-efficient front-drive/all-wheel-drive alternatives for GM's Commodore-style large cars. This could mean that both of Australia’s indigenous large cars, the Commodore and Fo…

Holden’s VE Series II SS Ute has been named Best Ute in the 2010 Drive Car of the Year Awards, for the fourth consecutive year. Following a rigorous six-day testing regime, the reigning champion was deemed best in class for its car-like handling, competitive pricing and “well-behaved car manners”. The ute was judged by a panel of experts from Drive.com.au, The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age on a broad criteria including performance, price, quality, comfort, practicality and safety. This was a picture taken during the 1983 Salt Lake City floods and the Oldsmobile sign caught my attention. I don't think I've ever seen an Olds sign like this in person before. Does anyone know when GM started putting up these rectangular signs for the brands? It's all I see around here today. Ford started updating theirs with the huge blue oval on top of the round column in the late 90s...I'm surprised GM hasn't brought out any new signage lately (as far as I've seen).

Buick Lacrosse Spied In Australia, Commodore To Switch To Epsilon II Platform? http://www.themotorreport.com.au/50888/buick-lacrosse-spied-in-australia-commodore-to-switch-to-epsilon-ii-platform Sep 27, 2010 Unconfirmed reports out of the US this week suggest that Holden is set to move to a front-wheel-drive platform for its next-generation Commodore, with the locally-developed Zeta platform to be dumped in favour of GM’s Epsilon II platform. That doesn’t mean RWD is off the cards altogether, though. According to US magazine Motor Trend, which penned the report, a replacement for the RWD Zeta platform is currently in the works and is forecast to underpin a range of ne…

General Motors' next-generation Zeta rear-drive platform will be heavily updated from its current form, with lots of high-strength steel to bring down weight. The price point of the cars that will use the platform makes this possible. They will include a new Chevrolet sport sedan on the shorter of two Zeta wheelbases. Think of it conceptually as a kind of four-door Camaro, even as the '14 Camaro moves to the new, smaller Alpha platform. GM is still working on a flagship for the brand, a Sixteen-inspired low-volume car, likely with a small-block V-8, designed to give Cadillac street cred in Europe and Asia as the resurgent Standard of the World. With post-bankruptcy GM ra…

Holden will produce 600 cars as an initial special edition model, but hoped to grow those numbers. Mr Devereux said the deal came as Holden and the Australian car industry emerged from a tough time prompted by the global economic downturn. "It's been a pretty turbulent time, make no mistake about it, both for Holden but also for the entire auto industry," he said. "I think we're emerging from that both stronger and wiser than ever." The export cars will sell in the luxury and performance segme…

I attended today the largest Pontiac Meet of the year the Pontiac Tri Power Nationals at Summit Raceway Park in Norwalk Ohio. This is usually the best attended and run event for Pontiac yearly. They had over 500 Pontiac powered Race Cars and almost 500 Pontiac Show cars. The thing to note there was not one word of the loss of Pontiac and things carried on as normal. People there really were into the cars on hand. There were some real special cars there and some of the nicest Pontiacs you will ever see not only on the show field but also going down the track. Many of the original Knafel Pontiac Tin Indian drag cars were there with Akron Arlen Vanke Doc Dixon and Norm…

I will go with Ion. Vue had built some momentum for Saturn as a more than one model car. I think the Ion destroyed whatever GM had because it was so needed for the Ion to be a homerun and it was a big let down in a huge way. Then the Aura as good as it was could not overcome the damage Ion did to the brand.

Had time & my camera- thought I'd share. This plucked bird belongs to my brother-in-law. Back in '84-86-ish, it was a mild terror; Pontiac 355, usually a 4bbl but was a Tri-Power for a short while. Auto, white bucket/console interior. IIRC, it has been off the road since '88, and at this point- it would be advisable to start with a rot-free bird. My B-I-L still entertains dreams of restoring it, but that's easily out of the question for the next 10 years at least. Unfortunately, it has been outside 99.9% of the days since '88, and likewise has little chance of seeing the underside of a roof in those next 10 years. Was a clean machine in it's day. The pics are hidin…

The Folden: New Zealanders Create Half Holden HQ, Half Ford Mustang Mechanical Frankenstein Is it a Holden? Is it a Ford? Well, according to the folks from the New Zealand music radio station, 'The Rock', neither. They say it's a Folden and it was born from the unholy -or so to speak- union of a Holden HQ and a 1969 Ford Mustang. The culprits are The Rock's Drive show announcers, Robert Taylor and Jono Pryor, who claim that they created the Folden because they were "fed up with the ongoing battle between their listeners over who is mightier - Ford or Holden." Their goal was to fuse the rear 3/4s of a 1970's Holden HQ sedan with the front-end of a 196…

The much-maligned ION is being redesigned for the 2008 model year. Still built on the Delta platform, it will share many components with the Opel Astra and Chevrolet Cobalt to save costs. It will be offered with the ION's current powertrains: the Ecotec 2.2L and 2.4L, with manual and automatic transmissions available with both engines. GM has run into a problem regarding the Lordstown plant that will build GMX002. The Cobalt alone is currently almost at the plant's capacity, so either Cobalt buyers will instead buy an ION, or ION production will be lower than the 113,000 units forecasted. It was scheduled to be built at the Lake Orion assembly plant alongside the Pontiac…

http://www.plant-maintenance.com/articles/pontiac.shtml For the engineers among us who understand that the obvious is not always the solution, and that the facts, no matter how implausible, are still the facts ... A complaint was received by the Pontiac Division of General Motors: "This is the second time I have written you, and I don't blame youfor not answering me, because I kind of sounded crazy, but it is a fact that we have a tradition in our family of ice cream for dessert after dinner each night. But the kind of ice cream varies so, every night, after we've eaten, the whole family votes on which kind of ice cream we should have and I drive down to the store to g…

HUMMER SHELVED! GM Confirms Hummer Sale Dead DETROIT – General Motors today announced that Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machines Co., Ltd. (Tengzhong) was unable to complete the acquisition of HUMMER. As a result, GM will begin the orderly wind-down of the HUMMER operations. "One year ago, General Motors announced that we were going to divest HUMMER, as part of focusing our efforts on Chevrolet, Buick, GMC and Cadillac going forward. We have since considered a number of possibilities for HUMMER along the way, and we are disappointed that the deal with Tengzhong could not be completed," said John Smith GM vice president of corporate …

For those of you who haven't driven a solstice, You HAVE got to get behind the wheel and try one for yourself. My mother-in-law just purcashed a GXP model with the turbo and OMG!! That car is amazing. IT's fast, it handles like a REAL sports car, it's incredibly great looking, and it's relatively inexpensive. What the hell? If GM kills that car when Pontiac goes, then I just don't get it. Chevy, Buick, hell even Cadillac could make SOMETHING outta that car. My aunt has a late model BMW Z4. I've compared them side by side and there isn't one reason one would choose the bimmer, other than they subjectively like bimmers better. Likewise, a very good friend of mi…

From Jalopnick Like seemingly every other GM product to be launched in the last year, the Pontiac G8 GXP’s handling was tuned on the Nurburgring. There, while being driven by development engineers (and not a professional race driver), it set a ring time of 8:30. That sounds pretty good, especially given the badge the G8 GXP wears on its nose and its price: expected to be just under $40,000 including gas guzzler tax and destination fee. But how good is it? In comparison, the E60 BMW M5’s record lap is 8:13. That car starts at $85,100 and betters the G8 GXP by 92 HP. The Porsche Boxster S is two seconds slower than the G8, despite weighing over 800 Lbs less and retailin…

The Holden Statesman is being considered for life as a Chevrolet luxury car in the USA. The long-wheelbase Commodore is already set for Chevrolet police cruiser duty in America and now a civil program is being assessed by General Motors. If it works it will happen within five years. The potential for a renewed overseas connection for Commodore comes following the collapse of a major export program with Pontiac during GM's bankruptcy last year. The Pontiac G8, based on the Commodore SS, was just starting to make significant sales when it died along with the Pontiac brand. "We want to take a look at re-introducing a civil version as a high- end Chevrolet," the vice-chai…

Just to let anyone who might care know Pontiac's are still taking to the track in 2010. Ken Black Racing will field two G6 GXP Summit Racing Pro Stock cars this season. These also are not last years cars But entire newly built Pro Stock cars. Greg Anderson said they will keep with the Pontiac's still fully marked as Pontiac's and GXP's this year even without GM's Support since GM left the NHRA. Greg said they hope that GM will return soon back to NHRA and they hope to represent GM with a new car. It is common for teams to remove the badging as soon as the money stops. I noted Warren Johnson and his son both will also keep the GM cars on track this year too. I could n…
