Jamie LaReau Automotive News February 16, 2009 - 12:01 am ET DETROIT — Bob Lutz says General Motors' struggling Saturn brand probably won't survive. "My personal favorite would be to see Saturn survive and prosper," GM's vice chairman told Automotive News. "But frankly, the reality is that that is probably not going to be the outcome." He added: "We spent a huge bundle of money in giving Saturn an absolutely no-excuses product lineup, top to bottom. They had a better and fresher lineup than any GM division, and the sales just never materialized. So we have to act on that. It's our duty." New Jersey Saturn dealer Stuart Lasser took Lutz's comments as confirm…

I spent this past week driving 2,800 miles with my family in a rented Aura XE 3.5 with about 25,000 miles on the clock. I chose it over a Camry SE to support the home team. Of course, for GM, it matters little which car I picked. It felt good though. What a good looking car, especially in silver sitting atop those bright spoked aluminum wheels! Details inside and out look well thought out and a bit upscale too. Many features that I've had on cars costing twice as much such as interior LED lighting and oil life monitor are included. Although fit and finish is very good overall, the double compartment center console felt on the verge of breaking. No doubt this was …

I've heard it mentioned as an option in some news articles, and heard it mentioned as a thought on here. So I'm curious... how would GM sell Saturn? -What is included and not included in the sale? -Who would buy? -Why might this be the best option (if you think it is)?

So I understand there will be no 2009 model year Saturn Astra due to an almost complete lack of sales for the 2008. A model designated as a 2010 will be released sometime in the spring with a few new colors. Sad that a Saturn small car, which the brand was built upon back in the day, is now put so far on the back burner because of a total lack of buyer interest. Yeah, GME will be the saviour of GM... I think not.

I was not aware of the customization of this Indy pace car- it's rather extensive for a pace car, which traditionally was lucky to get non-standard paint. Interesting piece : Here's the text that was posted with the pic, from March 2008: >>"1977 was the fourth of four years that Olds served as the official pace car to the Indy 500 during the 1970's - more than any other manufacturer! The car used for the 61st Indy 500 was a 77 Olds Delta 88 Targa Top driven by James Garner. The car featured a unique targa top design that would not be available on the replicas. Bucket seats and console mounted shifter were also unique to the pace car. There are two original…

HOLDEN Special Vehicles is back on the wagon train, releasing its first estate since the ill-fated Avalanche all-wheel-drive. Before that model was introduced in 2005, HSV had also dabbled with wagons based on the traditional two-wheel-drive Commodores, but they also failed to gain sales traction. The VT Commodore-based Senator Signature of 1997 qualified as a true automotive flop, with just 27 managing to find homes. HSV is confident its new wagon will be much more popular because it is now based on the short-wheelbase sedan rather than the more cumbersome long-wheelbase wagons of the past. Called the HSV R8 Tourer, the new car is based on the ClubSport R8 sedan an…

"If we just wanted to shut it down, we could have announced that," Mark LaNeve said during the NADA convention. "Saturn may very well have a place" within GM. That's from an article in the Detroit News. LaNeve evidently commented that the study of Saturn involves about 20 options, and that GM is trying to find a way to make the brand profitable. It has lost money in all but one year since its 1990 debut. That's from an article in Automotive News.

I think this is what GM wanted by floating the death rumors. Two local NJ dealers closing up, pissing off customers and killing Saturn's footprint in NJ. http://www.mycentraljersey.com/article/200...310/1003/NEWS01 And earlier this month, an 80 year old Chevy dealership (was Chevy/Olds), and the place that I bought my Camaro and Malibu closed. Laffin Chevrolet is no more. Not much left for me to care about new cars anymore. Just buy a Camaro SS and a G8 GT and keep them for the next 20 years I guess.

As Z28 and ZL-1 know, I am in Australia, so I think this should come from me to soften the blow somewhat, at least I hope it does. Better to come from me than a stranger I think. General Motors confirms G8 and Camaro are the last Aussie RWD models for America By BYRON MATHIOUDAKIS in DETROIT 13 January 2009 DEVELOPMENT of future large rear-wheel drive vehicle programs beyond the current-generation Holden-devised Zeta architecture has halted at General Motors, according to global product development vice-chairman Bob Lutz. Remember when the Pontiac G8 ST had just been announced for production and General Motors had not yet chosen a name for its new not-a-camino? A contest was held, a winner was chosen and the Poncho sport truck got the ST suffix officially added to its base G8-derived name. Joseph Warren, the winner of the naming contest, was granted a G8 ST as his prize for picking the right (and seemingly rather obvious) name, but since that particular piece of sport-truckery has now officially been scrapped, he had to pick something else. His choice? A fresh new Pontiac Torrent GXP. Really, we're not making that up. His only direction was that it had to be priced equal to or less than wh…

http://www.autoblog.com/2008/12/22/europes...-pontiac-trans/ "Have fun with KITT," sniffed some AMG engineers when a group of Norwegians showed up at Germany's Papenburg test track with a 1987 Trans Am. The smug smiles were quickly wiped off the faces of the Mercedes tuner crew when the ancient Pontiac's practice laps were as fast as the AMG cars, and the F-Body wasn't even working hard. Once warmed up, the 8.9-liter V8 unleashed all of its 1400 horsepower on the circuit, delivering a startling 407 kph (252 mph) also known as Bugatti Veyron fast. Better still, unlike the Bug, the Pontiac's lap is official. Needless to say, there's not much stock underneath the skin on…

Just a stupid thought out loud... The Chinese (and to a lesser degree Indian) automotive markets are considered to be the biggest growth markets right now, and the Chinese are batty over getting the opportunity to get their hands on part of the vaulted American lifestyle... a Buick! Obviously, these folks are probably influenced by a long history of great Buick models, not the current crop of boring crap. However, they are willing to take what they can. If they have been exposed to that much American culture, is it a long shot to think that they also have been exposed to the muscle car culture in America? Wouldn't some people in China like to get their hands on a p…

But General Motors is reconsidering plans to launch the 2010 G8 ST sport pickup late next year. "We are having lots of discussions," said Susan Docherty, vice president of Buick-Pontiac-GMC. New four-cylinder small car to be built alongside the Commodore within two years By MARTON PETTENDY and JOHN MELLOR 22 December 2008 GM HOLDEN has today confirmed it plans to manufacture an all-new small four-cylinder model in Australia from 2010. Announced in a major press conference this morning at the company's Elizabeth assembly plant outside Adelaide, which was attended by prime minister Kevin Rudd and industry minister Kim Carr, the plan is estimated to require between 500 and 600 positions at Holden, plus a similar number of local supplier jobs. Holden's small car plan, which was forecast by GoAuto in May, takes advantage of the Rudd federal government's $6…

It's a good read... FEATURES: 2009 Hummer H3T Alpha vs 2009 Nissan GTR - Over The Hill By Ezra Dyer Photography by Brian Konoske The idea sprung, as so many great ones do, from the Dukes of Hazzard. How many times have the Duke boys evaded Rosco or made it back to the farm just in time to beat the foreclosure guy? Many. And how do they do that, other than by driving fast and jumping over barns? Exactly - they take shortcuts. The Dukes are masters of driving off into the woods, blasting down a suspiciously well-graded trail, and then slewing back onto the main road, having cut critical minutes off their journey. Is it possible, I wondered, to use that strateg…

What do you see as the "essence" of the Pontiac brand? Please keep your replies serious and avoid commenting on the current state of the brand, that's not what I'm asking here. Tomorrow is the day, after 336,910 miles, the Delta is going to that big Oldsmobile dealer in the sky. Its been a long road with the 88, a car that has lived up to Oldsmobile's 100+ year reputation of quality while smoothing out the road to a point that my Aurora's ride is almost hard after a few trips with the 88. For those who have questioned the GM FWD cars of the 1980's I say this. My 1988 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royale 4-dr did 336,910 miles on the original engine, original fuel pump, the original exhaust system last 321,000 miles, the original starter lasted nearly 300,000 miles. It took 18 years for the headliner to fall down even though the car wasn't garaged. The nex…

Autoblog There's a Looney Tunes cartoon where Bugs Bunny is in charge of Yosemite Sam's inheritance, and every time Yosemite Sam loses his temper at something Bugs has done, the rabbit subtracts money. By the time Yosemite gets his act together... he's out of money. Substitute GM for Yosemite Sam and the buying public for Bugs Bunny, throw in a little credit crisis, and all we can say is that it would be a shame if the Pontiac G8 GXP fell victim to this scenario: GM running out of money just when it gets its act together. G8 GXP Edmunds Test Link Corvette Power, Mad Max Mojo By Dan Edmunds, Director of Vehicle Testing Email | Blog Date posted: 11-20-2008 About 19 months ago, we sent operatives with a briefcase bristling with test equipment to Australia. The mission: Get an early peek at the 2008 Pontiac G8 GT by test-driving its stablemate, the then-new 2007 Holden Commodore SS. The residual jet lag was magically wiped away by the Commodore SS's thrilling combination of rear-wheel drive, independent rear suspension, a six-speed manual transmission and a 6.0-liter V8. Or maybe it was the Mad Max flashbacks and the Vegemite. Yet even though we loved the 2008 Pontiac G8 when it…

The Australian car industry will be given a multi-billion assistance package by the federal government which could be announced by Monday, The Australian Financial Review reports. The newspaper says the package will include support in the 2008-09 financial year for the autocomponents sector, which has been gutted by widespread jobs cuts. Redundancies have also fed into the major car companies, with Ford the biggest victim. It's hoped the package will help boost the sector's ability to obtain finance and boost its competitiveness as the global financial system continues to struggle. Automakers worldwide have laboured recently as consumers put the brakes on spending. …

GM’s range-extending Volt electricar and EcoLine hit Holden’s greenest-ever stand By BYRON MATHIOUDAKIS 9 October 2008 HOLDEN shocked the industry at the Australian International Motor Show this morning with the unexpected unveiling of the Chevrolet Volt electric car. The latter, which would be based on the Chevrolet Cruze unveiled at the Paris motor show last week, has more legs because it has been revealed that the Holden design centre in Australia, along with design centres in the US, Europe and Korea, were co-operatively engineering the car. I submit the following idea for your consideration: would placing the Pontiac brand on a "Camaro-esque period of hiatus" be a viable alternative to simply killing the brand? I believe this period of downtime could allow for GM to fully assess how to make wholly unique, mpg-appropriate performance cars for the brand instead of simply rebadging Chevrolet Aveos and Cobalts and sweeping cars like the G8 and Solstice under the rug. I have other ideas for the brand. I may just post them later.

...how will that affect your relationship with GM as a whole? For me, it will mean a near total loss of interest in the company as a whole. All of my life I have watched GM kill anything of interest just when they finally get it right. What I'll be left with is old GM cars and possibly an occasional Chevy that I'll be interested in. Otherwise, GM will already be dead to me.

Worlds Smallest Hummer BBC link Based on the pensioners' favourite, the Suzuki Wagon R, the dwarf Hummer is now turning heads when Andy drives it around his home town of Poole, Dorset. The 1,000cc engine can reach speeds of nearly 100mph, but takes an age to get there. And while rap stars who are keen to be seen with the original Hummer might sneer at Andy's creation, it has become a hit on the streets among young lads. Sprayed in Pagan Gold, the 10ft 6ins long and 4ft 10ins high motor took 300 hours to create from a variety of vehicles.

GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz kisses a Saturn Astra for the brand's national photo contest. The sporty Belgium-built compact has won praises. Saturn was touted as a "different kind of car company" when General Motors Corp. debuted the brand 18 years ago with a slavish devotion to customer service, a single-minded focus on compact cars and no-haggle pricing. The fuel-efficient, pocketbook friendly cars, featuring a dent-resistant body, caught on with the public and car snobs alike. Popular Mechanics awarded Saturn a design and engineering award for manufacturing high-quality new vehicles. But then Saturn and its Spring Hill, Tenn., country style morphed into a differe…

Jamie LaReau Automotive News August 25, 2008 - 12:01 am ET The dreams of making Pontiac into an exclusively rear-wheel-drive brand have been put on hold, possibly permanently. Small front-drive cars will make up a significant portion of Pontiac's future product line. And like most everything in General Motors' stable, Pontiac's future lineup is affected by new corporate average fuel economy requirements and GM's tight cash supply. The bottom line: It will be difficult to create a unique identity for Pontiac, separating it from Chevrolet. Holden sheds contract jobs as GM abandons global rear-wheel drive vehicle projects By TERRY MARTIN 2 September 2008 GM HOLDEN is shedding an unspecified number of contract design and engineering positions following parent General Motors’ decision to abandon work based on the Australian-developed global rear-wheel drive architecture. After another tumultuous week for Australian vehicle manufacturing, during which 240 fresh job cuts across three automotive component suppliers and Kenworth Trucks were announced – less than a week after Ford declared that 350 jobs would be slashed at its Geelong and Broadmeadows plants – GM Holden has revealed to GoAuto that contract po…

Aussie-built Holden Caprice headed to South Korea Written by Viknesh Vijayenthiran Friday, 05 September 2008 http://www.carcentral.com.au/200809052756/...outh-korea.html Holden has announced today that its Caprice flagship will be exported to South Korea, where it will be sold as the new Daewoo Veritas saloon. Production will remain at Holden’s vehicle assembly plant in Elizabeth, South Australia, with the petrol V6 powering the car to be sourced from the Port Melbourne engine plant. Holden chairman and managing director, Mark Reuss, described the vehicle as a great addition to the company’s export portfolio, which also includes the Commodore sedan plus its v…

Looks like someone at GM is listening to me. Lutz tried to do the right thing by differentiating Pontiac as the performance brand, but the task isn't realistic given the lack of capital, state franchise laws, and the arrival of a permanent energy crisis among other headwinds. Pontiac will continue to be what it has been since starting in the 1970s: a Chevy clone with modified styling. At least until it finally fades away... http://www.autoweek.com/apps/pbcs.dll/arti...1023/LATESTNEWS

Spy Shot: Production interior of Chevy Volt Link to Autoblog General Motors continues to eek out teaser shots of the production Chevy Volt, but it appears that an image of the production interior has slipped through the Empire's net of control. All we have to go on for this image posted on the Motivemag.com forums is the image itself, which is part of a display panel at what appears to be a sneak preview of the vehicle for god knows who. What we see is a sleek, all-white center console with virtually no buttons. The controls appear to be touch sensitive instead, leaving the face of the console as smooth as a Frigidaire. Good luck installing an aftermarket stereo i…

I'm currently watching Project Runway on the Bravo channel (okay, my wife loves this show, if it wasn't for her, I wouldn't be watching it, seriously), but tonight's show is interesting because the designer's challenge is to make their clothes out of material found in a Saturn Vue. (like seat belts, fabric, floor mats, etc)

http://www.leftlanenews.com/pontiac-g6-con...ble-future.html Yes, you heard me right. I'm calling a G6 ugly. I do not like any of this. At all. Front end looks like it just rear ended a tall truck and squashed flat, it looks disproportioned with the whole car, almost to the point it looks tacked on, and made the front overhang problem worse. Front ride height looks like it's ready for off-roading. The new creases they added to the bumper does NOT flow with the rest of the car. And NOTHING was changed with the interior, where the real work was needed. I'm seriously unhappy with those designers. First the GXP, now this.

Posted by: David Kiley on August 17 The iconic Hummer brand could soon be in the hands of Eastern Europeans. Reuters is reporting that General Motors, which markets civilian vehicles under the Hummer brand has been in talks with Russia’s richest man, Oleg Deripaska, to sell the brand. Separately, sources have told Businessweek that Indian automaker Mahindra and Mahindra, as well as a Turkish private equity group have also inquired about buying the brand. GM announced last June that it was evaluating the future of Hummer, which is code for seeking buyers. GM is hurting for enough cash to see it through its current woes and economic downturn in the U.S. It lost more t…

By JAMES STANFORD 12 August 2008 GENERAL Motors' most senior global planner has outlined his vision for the Australian automotive landscape, in which our dependence on imported oil would end. GM research and development and strategic planning vice-president Larry Burns, who met with federal industry minister Kim Carr and Victorian premier John Brumby yesterday to discuss future technologies for Holden, said Australia was in a prime position to become a self-sufficient energy producer and cut its emissions at the same time. He said Australia’s viable future automotive energy sources could include LPG, CNG, biomass-generated ethanol, hydrogen, coal (which can be conve…

HSV. You know what it stands for. Not just Holden Special Vehicles, but what it truly stands for, the stance behind the badge. Bravado is one. Value for money is another. Most importantly, it’s muscle. True Australian outback beef squeezed into a box on four wheels. In keeping with this macho image, HSV has finally put out the MY2008 W427 into dealerships, a lesson in what engineering steroids can do to a sweet, Ausie rules-loving bloke. With that said, we can now cut through the grass and hit some serious manure. The W427 features 7.0-litres of muscle broth sourced from US sister brand Corvette, which allows for power to escape through the rear wheels in doses of 375k…

From an Aussie site: "Mates of mine who work at the Holden Factory say the VF Crewman is a goer with particular focus being on room in the back seats which should be possible vith the new LWB platform as used by the WM Statesman, Theres even the possibility of being able to extend the tray into the cabin [if required] by lowering the rear seats and bulkhead " Sounds like a midgate to me, now how long has it been that I've been saying that they should do this? :AH-HA_wink:

Craig Trudell Automotive News July 28, 2008 - 12:01 am ET With its dealers struggling to sell vehicles from a brand that might be sold, General Motors has paid Hummer dealers early bonuses and is in talks to buy out stores. "Hummer is quietly getting dealers to sign off on their stores and making deals with each one," Tim Kelly, a Hummer dealer in Chattanooga, Tenn., told Automotive News. Kelly said GM is "tiptoeing through a legal minefield" by trying to shed Hummer, trying to avoid the lawsuits that ensued when it killed Oldsmobile. He said he doesn't think that dealers "are going away without a fight, but I think GM is handling it the right way by making pe…

well, i had wanted to take out the astra today, but the sales guy practically pulled me out of the astra in the showroom and said 'try the aura'......here's why, the aura has a 20k sticker. So does the Astra. He was trying to say how good a value the Aura is. Since it was really close to close I am like, why not? I have driven the v6 model XR before and liked it, although it was awhile ago. I did buy into his idea. The Aura was an XE with a sticker somewhere between 20 and 21k. There is incentives on it too, i think. Well, i am not small so wedgning into an epsilon car is always a little bit gymnastics, but i think i have it down now. You have to limbo under…

What's up with GMI's report that the 2010 model Saturn Aura has been placed "On Hold"? They say it may be due to concerns over "the car's fuel economy." Anyone here heard the same? How might this delay the launch of the NG Aura?

For those who would like to know more about the Holden Sportwagon. By JAMES STANFORD 11 July 2008 PRIVATE customers are the prime target for the sleek new Holden Sportwagon, which goes on sale nationally from next week. Fleets accounted for 90 per of the previous Commodore wagon sales, but Holden is determined to spread the appeal of the new wagon beyond company car barriers. Holden spent $105 million on the new Sportwagon over and above the $1.03 billion it laid down for the VE Commodore program and officially calls it the VE Sportwagon, although the Commodore badge is still present on the boot. It designed a smaller, more attractive and, as the name suggests, …

Some of you know, I'm on vacation and I am taking the Pontiac Custom-S across country on a road trip to California and back. However a problem has crept in. Pulled up in front of my sister-in-laws in Knoxville,TN the other day and turned off the car and the key locked tight in the ignition cylinder, for love or money I could not get that key out, I tried moving the steering wheel left or right, tried to start it back up, key would not budge. Called AAA, they sent a locksmith and he came about an hour later, and viola key was free. Tonight it does it again after coming back from the local supermarket, in my parents driveway, but as luck would have it, I bought a can of WD-…

Get back to basics: a good car at a good price emphasizing high customer satisfaction and fuel-economy. Tactics: Add Saturn to PBG's channeling effort. Phase-out current Saturn lineup and replace with sedan and wagon versions of the new Cruze. Move the upcoming Pontiac G3 to Saturn lineup. All Saturns come one way, no options like Scion but without the sophomoric accessorizing. This emphasizes the value part. Underprice to raise volume. Why? Saturn's current positioning is a hard sale given the lack of promotion. This new plan plays to Saturn's natural strength without requiring a change in buyer perception. It also gives PBG dealers fuel-efficient cars to sel…

This kit for the VE Commodore sells for AUD$10,500 and is reportedly good for 380-410rwkw with a dual 3in exhaust on 8-10psi boost. A tuner I know has estimated that he'll be able to do the complete supply, install, and tune (with a few other bits added to the basic kit, like stealth fuel system which is a surge tank with twin internal pumps for almost zero noise and joined up to the current exhaust system with 2 bar map sensor, 60lb injectors) for about $16,000. On the first installation he did, he managed 407 rwkw at 9 psi boost and saw 434rwkw/582rwhp on his dyno using 12psi boost. Peak boost arrives by 3300 rpm. The output from the dyno is attached (3300rpm is 130…
