CarDomain recently sat for lunch with GM car czar Bob Lutz, and one of the topics that came up was the ever-vanishing manual transmission. Lutz explained that modern automatics are no longer the less efficient option by default, and with CAFE dictating so much nowadays, carmakers can actually lower their fleet average fuel economy more by going with automatics that can be programmed to deliver maximum efficiency (as far as the EPA is concerned, at least). He then went on to state that there will be manuals available in both the Camaro and the 2009 Pontiac G8 GT, which gets a 6-speed unit from Tremec. So if you waited on Poncho's new muscle sedan, your patience will be rew…

I am more than a wee bit suspicous of this car but I will post it anyway... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Cars-Trucks...0276052380& Interior says 1988 but outside says I have been rebodied ~1996 If it only has 6500 miles then why was it rebodied??? Either way the price is rediculous... Thoughts? Opinoins?

Apparently, not everyone hates Saturn the way some here do (even though I agree GM never should have started it). http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article...1014/BUSINESS01 Saturn has sharp cars, low profile BY MARK PHELAN FREE PRESS COLUMNIST To see the future of the Saturn Aura midsize sedan, you only need to look at the chiseled new Opel Insignia. To see the future of the Saturn brand, which GM is remaking with a line of excellent, stylish and affordable cars and crossover SUVs, takes more work. The stylish and expensive-looking Insignia is a dead ringer for the replacement for Saturn's acclaimed Aura, thanks to GM's strategy of combining engineering a…

Pros: Extremely well-mannered on city and neighborhood streets. Sound of engine revs. Driving position. Responsive steering. Not floaty AT ALL, a plus with a car that size. Seats are well-suited to however you decide to drive. Interior, though not elegant, is very functional (my wife will attest to that). More spacious interior than anything except maybe the DTS. Neither here nor there: I could feel the AFM when it kicked in and when it turned off, but I expected the engine to do that. Couldn't get used to the SportShift mode, but I probably wouldn't use it much anyway. Cons: I didn't get to thrash the car how I would have liked. Overall: The G8 GT is …

I'll keep it brief. I really wanted to love this car, but came out underwhelmed. I drove a silver 3-door automatic with premium audio and performance tires. I had no problem with the car having "only" 138hp, but the automatic seemed very slow to react, the stick is a must for this car. The tires did surprisingly well in the ice/slush that was just about everywhere, I'm sure all-season rubber would have done better. The infamous cupholder that everyone seems to bitch about seems like a non-issue, a sing, good sized cupholder between the seats would work just fine for most people, it is far back there, but not a hassle to access and is low enough that even with the sti…

I was going to wait until March/April time frame to buy a vehicle but I just couldn't pass up the great deal. This thing has a total of $3,000 in rebates on it but $1,500 of them are set to expire on 1/31/08 so I had to do it now. I'm not a huge SUV person but I need more rear seat room for my son and so I headed up to the dealership yesterday to give one a test drive. To my suprise, I liked it! It rode and drove nice and has pretty good acceleration. Since it has the same powertrain as my wife's Aura but is heavier, I expected it to feel a lot slower but it really doesn't feel much slower at all. Here's what I got: - XR FWD - Ruby Red exterior - Premium tr…

I just freaked out a C6 'Vette owner. My G8 is parked out in the parking lot in front of my hotel...right in front of my room. I heard his car rumble in and wondered why it stopped right out front. I looked out and he's got his hands cupped looking inside. I couldn't resist hitting the remote start button. Should've seen him jump back and start looking around expecting me to come out of somewhere. Hit the remote start button again and it shuts back off. He looks around again then squats down to look at the front of the car(must like dead bugs or something). I hit the remote start button again. He got pissed, hopped in his 'Vette and burned rubber out of the parking lot…

My dealer finally got a G8 GT in and my mom and dad went with me after work to test drive it. I got to take about a 10-12 minute spin in it after my dad drove it for about 10 minutes and my mom about 4-5. I was quite impressed. The suspension was superb, even over one of the worst roads around here (riding over that road in every other car I've ever rode over it in is hell). Smooth ride, but still very firm through the corners. The GTO is a good drive, but the G8 is better (though you can feel the added weight of the G8). Steering is very similar, but the G8 is smoother and never once got unsettled through a corner (or on a straight piece of road, for that matter). The…

Do you think GM will deprive me of the chance to buy a G8 ST with a manual? A GXP version? Somehow I get the feeling that I won't even be able to get one of these as a "going away" present before Pontiac gets the big flush. Yeah, I'm feeling bitter and have little faith anymore.

"... minor gripes aside, the new Pontiac G8 GT shines in many areas — outright speed, good fuel economy for its big V-8, easy-on-the-eyes inside and out, nice cabin materials and comfort, and that huge back seat. Factor in price and it is, essentially, in a class by itself. Nice." http://www.roadandtrack.com/article.asp?se...article_id=6692 Go Pontiac!

Autocar spies what could be a turbo Commodore By JAMES STANFORD 29 April 2008 www.goauto.com.au RESPECTED British motoring magazine Autocar has published photographs on its website of a heavily disguised evaluation vehicle that appears to be either a Holden Commodore or a related model testing in Sweden. Autocar claims the “mystery GM prototype” has several design cues that suggest a new Holden model lies underneath its cladding. It also reports that registration details confirm the car is a Holden, with the database attached to the licence plate indicating that the car is 4850mm long, 1800mm wide and weighs 1650kg. According to Autocar, it also has a 260bhp (…

And give the Malibu DI and 270HP, that ought to get at least 30MPG highway with reduced weight and better aerodynamics vs. the Lambdas.

I love the Aurora. As in the original, tube car, 1995-1999 Aurora. To my eyes, it is still the best piece of production sheetmetal to come out of General Motors in the 1990’s and is still singularly distinctive. I bought one in the early summer of 1994 and lived with it for 3 years. I loved the car, despite its flaws and have missed it ever since. Recently, I decided to pick one up on E-Bay. Given that all the examples of first gen Aurora’s that were within reasonable distance were all high-mileage vehicles, I chose the one with the best body and interior, not sure of what to expect from a mechanical standpoint. Once I had the car, a 99 with 170,000 miles, I found that …

http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/News/articleId=125393 DETROIT — If the car enthusiasts within General Motors prevail, Pontiac will further expand its lineup of rear-wheel-drive performance vehicles to include a 400-plus-horsepower V8-powered G8 coupe. Just don't call it a GTO. The coupe, which would be based on the Holden Coupe 60 concept the Australian division unveiled recently at the Melbourne auto show, would arrive in showrooms within three years' time. Since neither the Firebird nor GTO name will likely to be revived for the Pontiac lineup, the G8 coupe will carry the performance mantle for the brand. Motor Trend is reporting the Soltice and Sky will get the much expected 300 HP Ecotec Turbo next year. Here is what Autoblog reported. Sporting a specific output of 130 horsepower-per-liter, the turbocharged, direct-injected Ecotec four-cylinder from GM that's featured in the Pontiac Solstice GXP, Saturn Sky Redline and SS versions of the Chevy HHR and Cobalt, is already one heck of an accomplishment. But wait... there's more -- power that is. According to Motor Trend, shortly after the Solstice Coupe goes on sale next year, the blown-Ecotec could make 300 horsepower or more, putting it in close competition with performance stalwarts such as Nissan's Z. Jamie LaReau Automotive News April 7, 2008 - 12:01 am ET ATLANTA — Like most General Motors brands, Pontiac is considering technology such as ethanol, diesel, hybrids, direct-injection engines and six-speed transmissions to achieve better fuel economy. "Pontiac will benefit from all the fuel economy technology, just like the other brands, but it's too early to be specific," said a source familiar with GM's plans. Pontiac has branded itself as "seductive performance." The company wants its identity to be based on rear-wheel performance vehicles such as the Solstice roadster, G6 sedan and new flagship G8 sedan. But with high fuel prices, GM leaders know they mus…

No pox on the Pontiac G8amino? Posted March 25 2008 02:41 PM by Todd Lassa http://blogs.motortrend.com/6238758/govern...ontiac-g8amino/ DETROIT - Here's something nobody -- myself included -- considered when Pontiac revealed the Holden Ute-based G8 ST at the New York show last week. Will the sport pickup truck be subject to the 25-percent chicken tax? As far as the editorial "we" at Motor Trend can tell, the answer is "no." The Australia-U.S. Free Trade Agreement seems to remove the chicken tax from pickup trucks imported from Oz. The 25-percent tariff otherwise applies to all trucks imported into the United States, exempting Canada and Mexico, of course. It was o…

Questions about 60's pontiacs- A couple of color questions-was Verdero green available only as a GTO color? I think I've seen it on Lemans, Firebird, and such but am not sure. Also, was Mayfair Maze the only yellow offered? When I was growing up there was a mayfair maze Firebird owned by a teenage boy down the street (67 or 68, 67 I think). there was also a very brihgt yellow GTO that ran around, and I'm pretty sure the GTO had never been repainted. Was there another yellow colro offered by Pontiac in 67-69? Also, I have heard that some GTO's were special ordered in Daytona Yellow, the Chevelle/Camaro color. How rare is the Pontiac Custom S convertible? PCS p…

Pontiac G6 GXP Street Package Real Life Shots I really don't care what anyone says, this car doesn't look bad at all in person. In fact, it looks pretty darn good, especially with the metal grille and hammerhead spoiler. I could leave the hood scoops, but the rest is sharp. Feel free to flame me now. And thanks, Ryan, for the pics!

That my last two new car purchases as well as my next planned purchase have all been at Pontiac. Not too shabby for a "damaged brand" in less than a decade. I've always been a Chevy guy, but since 2002, Pontiac has had the magic combination to pry money from my pocket.

Autoblog Autoblog is reporting that the 3.7L 5 cylinder is going away in the H3 and being replaced by the 3.6 V-6. The article also mentions upcoming diesel application in the H2 and H3. I wonder what will become of the Alpha model. Will it get a more powerful V-8?

Last paragraph of Motor Trend's article on the G8 GXP: "The good news is that neither Pontiac nor Holden are production-constrained. So you and all your brothers and sisters can buy one and erase memories of the Widely Cladded Pontiacs once and for all."

It is exceptionally fun to drive and is a little darty like a go-kart and the transmission is amazing, no more 4spd. auto's for me. The interior is functional and pretty attractive, and now I am ordering my accessories. :AH-HA_wink: My wife better like driving the Bonneville, to work because even I want a purple SUV now. (I didn't think it would drive that good!)

Linikity The Battle for American V8 Sedan Supremacy Cars like the new 2008 Pontiac G8 GT and 2008 Dodge Charger R/T were once supposed to be every American's birthright. Brawny, V8-powered, relatively affordable rear-drive cruisers that can blow through a couple of big Western states in an afternoon at 90 mph — their drivers staring at the horizon through Ray-Bans, steering with one hand and smoking a Pall Mall with the other. You know, big, fast American cars. They're not hybrids, they don't run on biodiesel and they rumble and roar through dual exhausts. And they do the sort of epic burnouts that inspire Bruce Springsteen songs. These…

I priced up a fully loaded GT with Premium Package, Sport Package, and Sunroof for $32,745. I then priced up a loaded V-6 model with Comfort & Sound Package, Premium Package, and Sunroof, and the price was $33,735. Wha? A loaded V-6 model is $990 more? Come on people!

Article Pontiac Tries High-Performance Revival Saturday March 15, 4:49 am ET By Dee-Ann Durbin, AP Auto Writer Pontiac Attempts a High-Performance Revival With 2 New Vehicles DETROIT (AP) -- Pontiac wants to beef up its performance credentials with two new rear-wheel-drive vehicles that will debut at next week's New York International Auto Show, but the timing couldn't be worse as high gas prices test consumers' appetite for growling engines. The 2009 Pontiac G8 GXP upgrades the G8 sedan with a new 6.2-liter small-block V-8 engine that's rated at 402 horsepower. Pontiac says the G8 GXP will be able to go from zero to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds. The GXP also has a s…

When GM said the Manaro and GTO was canceled was this the whole story? Holdens new 60 coupe is very much like the GTO concept drawings in Motor trend about 3 years ago. Why would Holden show such a car near production trim if they were not going to produce it. With a G8 front clip a Pontiac coupe would be a simple addition. Could we be getting a coupe but it may just not be called a GTO? I ponder was the GM notice a hold vs a cancelation? The If GM would release this car next year they could get a 5-8 year run out of it before it could be changed to a Alpha. Even if Alpha was approved today GM needs something to sell for the next 5 years at the very l…

I keep looking at the saturn astra and I like it.. a lot. The problem is though I look at what everyone else offers as their base models in compact hatchback class and I can't imagine choosing a saturn for any reason other then you really really like the way it looks. I just can't see a good reason to choose one over a VW Rabbit or a Mazda 3. It's not just that the base models of those cars trump the astra for similar or less money, it's the fact that for the price of a three door astra xr with an automatic your almost at the price for a gti or a mazdaspeed3. I like the astra and I want it to do well but I can't see it doing much of anything unless they make a cheaper thr…

Vehicle Tested: 2008 Pontiac G8 GT 4dr Sedan (6.0L 8cyl 6A) MSRP of Test Vehicle: $32,745 Price It!! What Works: Fast, nimble and comfortable, and an awesome value besides; Pontiac builds the poor man's 5 Series. What Needs Work: Soft brake pedal; no redline on the tach; exhaust is too quiet. Bottom Line: This is the Pontiac we've all been waiting for. Pontiac Reinvents Itself By Scott Oldham, Inside Line Editor in Chief Date posted: 02-21-2008 The conversation went something like this: "Hey, Steve, come by with the Bee. Holden Special Vehicles today unveiled a seven liter program at the Melbourne Motor Show, the last installment of the company s 20th anniversary celebrations. The car to be known in its final development stages as the W427 is finished in the same Panorama Silver paint scheme as the original Group A SS VL Commodore, released at the Melbourne Motor Show of 1988, exactly 20 years ago. HSV Managing Director, Scott Grant, said the W427 was a tribute to how far the company has come in just twenty years. "To be able to produce a vehicle of these proportions is truly remarkable," Scott Grant said. "The W427 will be quite possibly the fastest road registrable Supercar ever p…

Autoblog said the German Auto Press is reporting that Pontiac and Saturn may get a version of the Saab 9-1 hatch. I have said a Mini Fighter would be a good addition to Pontiac if they have to have a FWD. I just hope there is no Saturn version or it is so different that it can not be compared. They said Buick could get one too but I can't see that as it just does not fit their mission.

Just picked up the new G8 book at the dealers. It has a lot of good info. thye have all the options and colors listed. I did not read it all but it did claim a 0-60 in 5.3 seconds. The cars should not be too much longer and we can see them sitting on dealer lots. The only thing on the catalog that is odd is that it has a odd fold out format.

"No Trans Am for Pontiac" By JAMIE LAREAU, AUTOMOTIVE NEWS Buick, Pontiac and GMC dealers will get 12 new or special-edition vehicles over the next 20 months--but they won't get a Pontiac Trans Am. Pontiac had lobbied for a sibling vehicle to the Chevrolet Camaro, which is scheduled to arrive in February 2009. General Motors' plan to make Pontiac a rear-wheel-drive performance car division is likely to be scaled back because of fuel economy regulations, GM leaders told dealers at the National Automobile Dealers Association annual convention this past weekend. One dealer said the business case for the Trans Am didn't compute. "It was an economic situation," sai…

So the 2008 Astras were delivered today to my local dealer, and with the snow coming, Kat & I headed down there to take a test drive. The 3 door was in the showroom, but the 5 door XE was outside and available for test drives. 1st impression - The car still looks good in person - much better than in pictures. Evidently this is subjective, because Kat doesn't really like it in person either. There is plenty of room inside - the sport seats in the 3 door are very comfortable and supportive. Even the base seats in the 5 door are a nice step up from the S-Series & Ion. The radio looks a bit complicated, but the controls are easy to reach, a…
