\ According to the good folks at the Aspen Daily News, who, in between jokes about "driving excitement." manage to tell us the tale of how a Holden engineer managed to crash a tester G8 while on a test drive out in Colorado: "Apparently a Pontiac isn't always driving excitement, even if it's the as yet unreleased 2008 G8: a "performance sedan for the truly power hungry." The last test driver in a convoy of G8s dozed off at the wheel of one of the "muscular" new cars and drifted off Highway 82 near Independence Pass late Thursday morning, rolling about 100 feet down a steep embankment. The driver, 41-year-old Australian General Motors engineer Rolf Glenk, was treated f…

I dunno if this has or hasn't been speculated/confirmed/shot down already before, but I was just wondering, with the release of the Commodore Sportwagon, is there any definitive word on whether there will there be a G8 version as well?

GM released only this single image of the unique Pontiac Solstice SD-290 Concept. The Solstice features a cover over the passenger compartment that evokes vintage single-seat racers of yore and even includes a new windscreen and separate review mirror mounted in the middle. It's likely powered by something that's green since this is the theme of many of the cars.

Link No Manual-Transmission Pontiac G8 for 2008 Date posted: 10-17-2007 DETROIT — Want the scorching V8-powered Pontiac G8 GT sedan coming in the first quarter next year? GM's performance division already will let you spec out the 361-horsepower G8 just the way you'd like. As long as you want an automatic transmission, that is. Yep, you read that right: The G8's probably the best thing to happen to Pontiac since John DeLorean bent the rules to make the GTO, but the first models shipped to these shores from Australia will have just two pedals, like it or leave it. Early adopters, it appears, will have to be satisfied with slushboxes — six-speeders with GM's Drive Shi…

Its a different version of another commercial I saw, but this one is done much better. What do you guys think? If you would have told me 5 years ago that there would be a Saturn that I want to drive, I would have told you you were crazy.

Holden’s VE Commodore wagon was no certainty - until its export potential emerged By MARTON PETTENDY and BYRON MATHIOUDAKIS 16 October 2007, www.goauto.com.au GM HOLDEN has confirmed that its export potential is the major reason for the VE Sportwagon’s being – and that it will have a smaller cargo area than the model it replaces. As a result, Holden concedes the next-generation Commodore wagon, which officially broke cover at last Thursday’s Sydney motor show opening in the shape of the VE Sportwagon concept, is likely to attract fewer business buyers than the VZ Commodore wagon it replaces – a model it says was one of the world’s biggest wagons. If approved for US e…

'08 Saturn Hybrid Vue Fuel Economy Numbers Saturn has released fuel economy numbers for the all-new 2008 Saturn Vue Green Line hybrid sport-utility. According to Saturn.com, the Green Line will get an EPA estimated 25mpg in the city and 32mpg on the highway as well as a combined average of 28mpg. Taking into account the revised 2008 fuel economy measures, this is an over 10% increase over the 2007 VUE - despite the extra curb weight - and about 27% better than the regular 4-cylinder 2008 VUE. Saturn is also touting the longest range of any SUV, 585 highway miles as well as the best highway fuel economy, beating out even the Ford Escape's 30mpg. The VUE Green Line st…

GM plans Pontiac Solstice Targa 10/05/07, 10:02am, EDT | Link to Original Article @ LeftLane News General Motors will begin production of a Pontiac Solstice Targa model in early 2009, according to well placed sources. It's not clear how the project relates to the previously-rumored Solstice coupe. Internally, GM refers to the Targa as GMX627. Production will start production in January of 2009 at GM's Wilmington plant. Production may be limited to as few as 10,000 units annually. Possible debut venues would include SEMA '08 or LAIAS '08.

GM @ Sydney International Motor Show Holden Special Vehicles Celebrates 20th Anniversary With Limited Edition ClubSport R8 Holden Special Vehicles (HSV) has unveiled two new models, including a special commemorative ClubSport R8 as part of its 20th Anniversary celebrations at the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney today. I like the article, but I don't like the fact that they loved to mention that the LS7 is built in Mexico. Lets rub it in that GM (which is "supposed" to be more American than Toyota) builds things in Mexico. But then I got to thinking, "is the LS series V8 really built there???". So, was the LS1 in my 1998 Camaro Z28 built in Mexico? That would be sort of disappointing.

SPY SHOTS! 2009 Pontiac Vibe The phrase 'change is the only constant' could accurately describe the state of the Pontiac division as of late. News of a partial or full switch to rear-wheel drive vehicles for the next generation, talk of a new GTO, an Alpha-based G6, and the persistant rumor of GM shuttering the brand completely have only added to the general confusion regarding the performance division. One of the most cryptic futures to be determined was that of the 5-door Vibe wagon. Introduced for 2003, the Vibe was the latest in a line of vehicles created from a partnership between Toyota and General Motors. The Vibe, along with its Toyota Matrix sister, was the fir…

It starts at $24,795, including destination. Fuel economy and performance are likely to be worse than the old model's, because it now weighs 500 lbs more. If it gets a +2 MPG increase, like BAS does in the lighter Aura and Malibu, that will be 21/28 MPG, comparable to a non-hybrid RAV4 or CR-V. The tax credit for '07s was $600; technically the smaller the fuel economy increase, the smaller the credit. Included in the price are body-color bumpers, special alloys, floor mats, BAS, and hybrid auto A/C. For the same price, I'd rather get an XR FWD and drive less.

http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/hybrid..._midsize_sedans Those American hating editors at Motortrend bashed the Aura. They even dared to publish the Aura Hybrid's 0-60 mph time of 10.5 seconds. "the Aura hybrid is also a stop-gap measure, a place-holder until its next-generation model receives a version of GM's highly anticipated two-mode hybrid. Think of it as a lure to tantalize bargain-hunters. And as with all bargains, the question is whether it's false." "the Aura Green Line is a low-profile hybrid that drives almost identically to its conventional-propulsion self. In other words, it's supple riding and crisp steering, drastically vacuumed of chassis feel, hi…

"Hmmmm..." Doug Houlihan listens carefully to the 3.6-liter DOHC V-6 installed in the black Pontiac G8 test mule. "I don't like that idle. Feel that?" True enough, there's a buzz radiating through the seats, door panels, and steering wheel. A call goes out on the radio: "What's up with the idle on this unit?" Another engineer radios back that the latest U.S.-spec calibration was downloaded to the car this morning, and the engine-management system is still learning the new curve. "Should clear up in a hundred miles or so." As Global Vehicle chief engineer for General Motors's RWD vehicle architectures, the buzzy idle is Houlihan's problem. In fact, every nut, grommet, and…

Pontiac G8 Still doesn't list pricing, but it shows some of the option packages and colors. I didn't know this before, didn't know if anyone else had said it, but it appears the base model gets the regular red taillights, while the GT gets the clear ones that so many of us either love or hate. I'm waiting on the pricing already... Road & Track's 2008 preview said that the car would start at around $35k, which contradicts everything I've heard.

Union document shows GM plans to build a compact rear-drive car from 2011 By TERRY MARTIN 2 October 2007, www.goauto.com.au THE chances of Holden resurrecting the Torana nameplate in Australia with a new rear-wheel drive compact car increased dramatically last week when United Auto Workers (UAW) officials in the US disclosed future model plans for General Motors. Chrysler Sebring Touring Convertible 2. Ford Mustang Pony Convertible 1. Pontiac G6 GT Convertible.

2010 Pontiac Firebird or GTO? Is Pontiac raising GTOs or Firebirds on its muscle-car farm? Conceptual Rendering by MJDecker BY STEVE SILER, June 2007 | Link to Original Article @ Car and Driver Every day, we get letters from readers asking us to write stories about things that, frankly, we don’t know anything about. NY Times Wheels Blog: Wrong about Saturn By Kyle Johnson, Director, Saturn Communications | Link to Original Post @ GM FastLane Blog There was a puzzling post by Jerry Garrett in the New York Times' "Wheels" blog yesterday. By the time the 1960s rolled around, Pontiac's reputation as a performance marque had been firmly entrenched on all fronts: stock car racing, drag racing, and most importantly, on the street. Most of the hot Pontiacs sold in those years were carefully optioned Catalinas and Venturas, and while they were unquestionably high-performance cars, they had the same trim levels as the ubiquitous family transporters of those same model names. Pontiac wanted to create a car that embodied performance, luxury, and style—one that didn't owe its existence to a couple of option groups on an order sheet. This was to be the flagship of the fleet, the Grand Prix. With the four-seat Thunde…

I don't really know where to put this but it occurs to me that the Vibe, while cheap, doesn't really fit w/ Pontiac as a whole. Nor does it lead its class in any area. Instead of GM using the next Vibe at the NUMMI plant they should have chosen to utilize a different Toyota base car for its GM counterpart. I thought about what Toyota offers that GM doesn't and while there isn't much I think GM should use the Scion Tc for a base for the next Pontiac G5. The reason the G5 was made is that dealers were complaining that they didn't have a compact car to replace the Sunfire. While the Scion Tc is considered a good competitor in its class the G5 isn't even considered by ma…

C&G Rumors: Another G8 Iteration? Conceptual Rendering by NOS2006 A little birdy told me that there would be another version of the G8 coming in late 2008 (a little over a year, actually), but said it wasn't a wagon. Therefore, the only logical guess I could think of is the GXP, unless we're going to see a hybrid or the little birdy was wrong about the wagon. Either way, the birdy said it is a sedan. Saturn should be renamed Opel. Saturn and Opel mostly share the same vehicles with little change other than federalization and the badge. Because of this fact Saturn's current positioning as the "new American car" makes absolutely no sense down here on earth. And this positioning will fail because it makes no sense and nobody (aside from all us geeks here) gets what GM is trying to do. Thankfully the cars are good because that's why they're getting bought at all. Certainly not on the back of Saturn's non-image. At least with the Opel name, it's clear why the Aura goes head-to-head with the Passat or the Astra versus the Rabbit (it's Opel versus VW, just like back i…

Help Saturn Name its 2009 Colors A little request from Saturn was e-mailed to me yesterday. Here's an excerpt. And here is the color palette. So, fellow C&Gers, lets come up with some good, creative names. Please submit to this thread a name for each color. If you can't think of a good name for each color, that's fine; just submit the ones you can think of. Remember, the deadline is next week, so submit your ideas now! We'll take the best ones and formally submit them on C&G's behalf. Thanks and have fun!

Car and Driver names Astra one of ten Safest under $25k It’s tough to contain our excitement about a car that’s actually “Euro tuned.” The only difference between Europe’s best-selling car, the Opel Astra, and what will shortly turn up on Saturn lots are Gulpinator-sized cup holders, inevitably crappy all-season tires, and a piece of plastic on the hatch marking it a Saturn. It would be tough for the Astra to do worse than the Ion it replaces, but we think it will instead do much, much better, offering a premium product, with premium safety equipment, at a solidly ‘Merican price. Compact-car renters rejoice. Stability control is standard on the sportier three-door, op…

FORD Australia president Tom Gorman has again attacked GM Holden’s move to import Daewoo-sourced models. Mr Gorman, who describes his most direct rival's move to sell cheaper South Korean-built models as ‘bottom feeding’, points to sales figures as evidence the plan is not working. “In a year that they have a whole new product (VE Commodore) and a bunch of Daewoos to push, their (passenger market) share is down by almost a full percentage point,” he said. When asked why he thought Holden’s small-car share had dropped off in the last year, Mr Gorman suggested the switch to South Korean models was not delivering sales results. “I don’t really know what is going on at H…

I have a honda friend/import humper that just loves to point out that the IRL hasn't lost any motors to failure during racing during the last 12 or so IRL races. He then points out how bad the Aurora motors were when they were used in the IRL. Does anyone have actual failure rate info for the Aurora motor used in Indy car racing? Chris

Hummer H4 no longer just a concept vehicle Conceptual Rendering by NOS2006 Link to Original Article @ HUMMERGUY Hummer dealers from around the nation recently gathered in California to attend the annual Hummer All-Dealer meeting. The meeting showcases upcoming products such as the Hummer H3 Alpha and the upgraded 2008 Hummer H2, as well longer term concepts like the H3T and HX. HX is the name Hummer has given to the most heavily rumored concept vehicle which will be designed to compete with the Jeep Wrangler – some are calling it the H4. Whatever name you want to call it, it’s coming. Martin Walsh, Hummer’s General Manager, used the meeting to officially announce that …

I just bought this book from Amazon. I can't wait until it gets here. It chronicles the Pontiac Grand Prix from the very 1st generation to what we have today. Since the Grand Prix will be no more it's a keeper for me. My favorite Grand Prix is still the 1970 Grand Prix SJ, my older cousin had that car. God did I love to drive around with him in that car. Anyway here is the book I ordered.

SPY SHOTS! 2009 HUMMER H3T Link to Original Article and More Spy Shots @ WorldCarFans At the Los Angeles Auto Show in Dec. 2003, Hummer showed its H3T concept truck. This was a 2-door pickup targeted at truck enthusiasts who wanted the Hummer image, but in a smaller, pickup truck configuration. Now this concept is making its way to reality as these photos capture a prototype undergoing hot weather testing in Death Valley, California. The most obvious difference between the concept vehicle H3T and the production model is that the concept was a 2-door, but the prototype shows that the production model will be a 4-door. Completely covered in the prototype is the short p…

Assaulting Paved Terrain With a New V8 By Ed Hellwig, Senior Editor Email | Date posted: 07-12-2007 | Link to Original Article @ Edmunds In order to create the new, more powerful 2008 Hummer H3 Alpha, the engineers at GM's off-road brand had to take a couple steps backward. The standard H3's inline five-cylinder might be technologically unique and suitably tractable for off-roading, but it's hopelessly overmatched by the H3's weight, especially on the road. So, sure enough, the Hummer engineers adopted an idea that's been around at GM for half a century — V8 power. With the 2008 Hummer H3 Alpha, GM hopes this addition to the H3 model range will broaden this SUV's…

Apparently the kappa twins have issues with not only a leaky differential but a leaky rag top. Does anyone know if these are things GM is trying to fix? There's a TSB for the differential leak, but I would hope GM has issued a fix at the factory or supplier for that, but the leaky top also needs to be rectified. Makes it kinda hard to argue on the side of GM when a couple of their shining stars are a little tarnished, ya know?
