The 1951 Mercury is an all-time customizer's favorite. The Turnpike Cruiser exemplified the optimistic, space-age exuberance of the late 50's. The big bruiser Marauders of the early to mid-60's did well on the streets and the NASCAR tracks. The 1967 Cougar slunk into our consciousness as a cross between personal luxury and ponycar. When you think of cool Mercuries, what comes to your mind?

Yesterday was the end of the line for my local Saturn dealer, they closed, according to a local television news report. They opened, I believe, in early '92. Parent company already closed their York, PA store, I know for sure, and I believe they have, or had, at least 2 other Saturn outlets (among other brands, including Chevrolet out of the local area). Very sad for the good employees who've gone through so many machinations through the years to represent GM's failed experiment, but probably smart for the parent company to stop now, rather than wait until the cold, lonely bitter end. At lunch yesterday I heard that my former employer, Chevy/BMW dealer, has bought…

Ford has been pretty tight-lipped about a future lineup for Mercury. I think there is room for the brand as a bridge between workaday Fords and full-lux Lincolns. We know this much: the brand will shrink the size of its vehicles. Here's what I propose for Mercury - Focus-based coupe, sedan and convertible. Let Ford have the hatchbacks. Make it sporty and young. Focus-based people-mover, 7 passenger. Let Ford have the 5-passenger version. Kuga-based crossover. Keep the look more urban than the Ford, which should look more rugged. Milan sedan redesign, with Cougar coupe version added. It's gotta be hot, yet upscale, like the '67 was in relation to the Mustang. …

3 Kings - Chevrolet Camaro vs Holden Coupe 60 vs Holden Monaro via WheelsMag.com.au Not long before the end of the 20th century, a remote automotive outpost took a bare-arsed bet on a concept for its first full-sized coupe in 20 years. Far from being an unnoticed blip on a distant star, the Commodore Coupe concept would re-align the orbit of General Motors itself and make Holden the magnetic centre of its muscle-car galaxy. Eleven years on, more cataclysmic forces are pulling GM in a new direction. But Holden’s 10-year trajectory produced Monaro, the all-Australian pony-car that went on to earn one of America’s most iconic badges: Pontiac GTO. It put Australia in t…

Really? Börger has a better idea! The Chevrolet Camaro might not be imported to Australia, but we sure get what it's about. Big, V8-powered cars shaped like Coke bottles are as much a part of Australia's national psyche as beer, beaches and barbecues. In fact Australia makes the best muscle cars in the world. For proof you don't have to look any farther than the streets of Detroit, where you'll see plenty of 2010 Chevrolet Camaros — a car that had to come through Australia before it was good enough for America. We did the Camaro and the Pontiac G8. In fact, we Aussies could have given you the next Pontiac GTO, if you'd given us the chance. It was the 2008 Holden Co…

You wouldn't believe it in a million years ... HSV's V8 Maloo ute continues to lead the manufacturer's section of the 2009 Global Green Challenge. Halfway through the event, the Maloo has shown a 51 per cent improvement in fuel economy which puts it ahead of the field by a country mile. With an official fuel economy figure of 15.1 litres/100km, the go-fast utility driven by former Fairfax journalist Joshua Dowling has been returning an average 7.35 litres/100km after three days of competition. Second place is being held down by Ford's turbocharged XR6 Falcon, another heavy hitter in the normal course of events. With an official figure of 11.7 litres/100km, the Fal…

Interesting to see if this pans out, and just how far north of $60K it'll turn out to cost. From one incomplete pic, I'm having a hard time getting past the Camaro-ness of it....

Stunning to look at, with the new beak, and in white. it had a tan interior i believe. i had never been stunned by a g6 that way before. tell me again why Pontiac is being killed? did anyone ever know the G6 coupe existed? should the G6 and g8 at least been given a reprieve and the g6 given a proper interior and NVH refinements? time to go white g6 coupe hunting..............

Found while poking around (via the GM Photo Store). I had not heard of this previously, but there's been so much experimental stuff over the decades, who can say they've seen it all? That plenum is markedly different than either Chevy's or Pontiac's, yet again proof of the autonomous operation of the Divisions in this era.

Holden to build limited edition run to clear Pontiac parts North America's loss is about to become Australia's gain. As Pontiac prepares to shut its doors in the USA, and with it the Commodore export program, it has emerged that the Commodore-based Pontiac G8 will be sold in Australia from late this year. Holden exported approximately 41,000 Commodores as Pontiac G8 sedans between November 2007 and February 2009. A ute version of the Pontiac G8 was due to follow later this year but it was axed along with the rest of the Pontiac brand. A top secret Holden dealer bulletin obtained by the Carsales Network has revealed that the Pontiac G8 will be sold locally in Novembe…

I spent yesterday at the Pontiac Nationals and Summit Raceway Park in Norwalk Ohio. This is the largest gathering of Pontiacs in the world. With over 500 Show cars and 500 plus Pontiac powered race cars this is the big time Pontiac event. I went expecting a wake or a lot of people mad at GM. I found few brought up the end of Pontiac. If they did say anything they were not thilled with the loss but most of them have not cared for many of the recent pontiacs for years. Note many of Pontiac's best sellers from the last 30 years were not on the show field. There were many G8, GTO and Solstice but no G6, Sunbird, Vibe, G5, Grand Am, or SUV based vehicles other than one A…

Automotive News July 13, 2009 - 12:01 am ET Recall that after General Motors gave Oldsmobile the brushoff, at least the vehicles got a classy send-off. The final 500 units of each model sported a special red paint job, embroidered upholstery and a colorful badge. Pontiac gets bupkis. "I wish I could say it was otherwise," said Pontiac spokesman Jim Hopson. "But given the situation and timing, there literally was not enough time to put together any special-edition packages." The Pontiac wind-down looks like this: The G3, G5 and G8 already have gone out of production. The Solstice sports coupe and convertible are done this month. The total production run of 1,100 …

I'm sure there will be 'what if' posts about Pontiac for a long time to come... since this forum has been kinda dull, I thought of one. So, I was driving behind a Scion tC with fart pipes and a booming stereo, and once I was able to get around the slowpoke, I was thinking about the positioning of Scion in the Toyota hive. Obviously, Scion isn't doing as well as planned, but with a lot of people viewing Toyota (and Honda) as being somewhat upmarket over Chevy and Ford, I was thinking that perhaps GM needed to shake up the brand ranking. Since Chevy is trying to go eye to eye with Toyota, GM has a vacuum forming at the low end, where the young drivers are. Its been br…

I recently sent a e-mail complaining to Troy Clark about Pontiac being shut down, here is his response. I thought it might give some of you insight as to why Pontiac is being shut down. Now remember the only cars I have bought for my personal cars have been Pontiacs since I was a teenager, 27 in all. But I told Troy that is about to change to BMW, mainly because they are the closest thing to Pontiac at the moment for me, and not because I work there. I will admit now, that I suggested that GMC should have been shut down. Sorry Roger! …

I drove from Windsor, Ont. to Niagara Falls, Ont. and noticed there are a TON of Pontiac's in Canada. And they weren't all rental cars, either, as I looked for bar codes in the windows. I guess I never realized GM sold so many Pontiac's in Canada. There were Pontiac's everywhere and hardly any Chevrolet's. I probably saw 10x as many G5's as I saw Cobalt's and there were quite a few G3's (if that is what they are called in Canada) and only a couple of Aveo's. Is GM planning on Chevrolet picking up this volume? Are they converting Canadian Pontiac dealers to Chevrolet or are they all already combined and they are just killing off the Pontiac side?

A friend of mine recently picked up a black G6 GXP coupe with the Street Package. Her husband and I got to talking about the possibility of it having collector status, of course, depending upon how many of them have sold, will sell, or continue to even be built. I weighed the pros and cons and determined that, even with the demise of Pontiac, the car really isn't that much of a high-profile auto that deserves collector status; and that it might as well be a daily driver instead of a garage queen. Any thoughts?

But GM may continue to produce the compact hatchback for the Canadian market for a short time beyond August, said Jim Hopson, a Pontiac spokesman. "It is being phased out. Holden is safe despite GM's woes AAP - May 31, 2009 05:05pm http://www.news.com.au/business/story/... THE Australian Federal Government is optimistic car manufacturer Holden will be "safe", even as its parent General Motors (GM) faces the prospect of bankruptcy in the US. Industry Minister Kim Carr predicts the Australian-based operations will weather the storm buffeting its owner. "I remain very optimistic that Holden will weather the global financial storm and emerge stronger," he said. Senator Carr said recent restructuring had made the company able to withstand whatever happened overseas. "Holden has already undergone significant restructuring," he said.…

Local Mazda dealer had about 15 miata's in stock, some of them 2008 models that had been there awhile. Buyers Mazda is also where our Miata club meets, and they were always hinting that a really good deal could be had as the Miata was selling slowly. However, as soon as it came out that Pontiac was shutting down, there was a run on Miatas. In a few weeks time frame, they have sold all 15 or so Miata's on the lot, as well as most of the Miata's that showed up on an all Miata Semi-truck shipment Monday. Probably just coincidence...but it seems odd that a dealership would see very few Miatas for months and then sell a ton. The weather is part of it....but spring showe…

He name names and points out the failing of most since Delorean left Pontiac. Jim stated most in charge either did not know or understand Pontaic and what was built in the 60's or did not care in the later years. While I do not always agree with Jim he did point out many good failings of many at Pontiac and how they gutted Pontiac from what they truely were. Jim does give credit to a few that did try to keep it alive but they were too few in numbers to stand up to GM on their own. zzTHis is a go…

From Drive.com.au: Holden has all but officially confirmed it will ditch the European-built Astra small car from its local line-up. Holden has all but waved goodbye to the Astra small car, admitting that unfavourable exchange rates mean it’s unlikely the 22-year-old nameplate will continue beyond the hundreds of cars waiting to be sold. The announcement comes after Drive’s exclusive revelation that Holden had instructed dealers to cease ordering the small car that’s consistently been Holden’s second biggest seller behind the locally made Commodore. The move to drop Astra from the Australian lineup car means Holden will be without a small hatchback for at least a y…

ASC recreates Trans-Am with 2010 Chevrolet Camaro by John Neff on May 7th 2009 at 2:28PM Pontiac is on its way out just as the new 2010 Chevy Camaro has arrived. Had this been a decade or two earlier, the Camaro would most certainly be accompanied by an equally sick Pontiac version, namely the Trans-Am. But even before it was decided to put the final nail in Pontiac's coffin, General Motors had no intention of developing a new Trans-Am based off the Camaro. Well, someone should, and someone did. General Motors has been trying to unload its Hummer division for nearly a year now. Despite assertions late last year indicating that it hoped to have the troubled brand off its books for good before 2009 rolled around, we are now nearing the end of the first quarter of '09 and Hummer is still wholly owned by GM. According to a new report by the Associated Press, tomorrow is the day that we'll finally find out what the future holds for Hummer and its 160 or so dealers across the United States. We've heard all along that there are multiple parties interested in the brand, and that's apparently still the case. A GM spokesperson has said that companies from "all differen…

There is a similar post on the Saturn board. I am going to say that the 1985 Oldsmobile 98 was the model. I had one. I finally got 147 K miles but I had to spend money on a computer, transmission, steering, fuel pump and the door locks finally all locked up. This car was too small and poorly put together. By the 1991 model, the 98 was obscure. I had a 1988 Cutlass that was very dependable other than the poorly constructed dash and doors. I think the 88 was actually a better car than the 98 and seemed to hold up longer. I wonder how many 1985-1990 Oldsmobile 98s are still on the road.

So I got a dear John letter from the VP (I forgot her name) of the Buick-Pontiac-GMC division letting me know that they were killing Pontiac and the letter acknowledged the fact as a fan of Pontiac that I probably already had heard the bad news. She went on to say that GM acknowledged the fact that I was a loyal customer and that would assure me that my vehicles would continue to be serviced at the dealerships and how they were working hard to keep me as a customer. As soon as I get a chance I will reply for what it is worth. I will let them know their idea of keeping a loyal customer is by closing down his favorite marque even though it is the number three selling divi…

I'm a member of DevinatART. I recently got a message that one of my artworks has been featured in an article. So this is pretty big for me...never had such an important distinction. I go to the article and it's about Pontiac, it's history, and the dreams it left behind.' There's some beautiful photography and Illustrations that any fan of cars, especially Pontiac should check out. ...and as a bittersweet treat for those of you upset by the brand's passing, you'll be glad to know that this is one of those rare articles that doesn't bash the brand. I dunno how accurate it is, but it's a very nice gesture. Only makes me wish my art had been featured for something less …

To anyone whose brand of choice is Pontiac, currently owns a Pontiac, or plans to buy a new Pontiac within 3 years, what would your brand of choice be if Pontiac were to be killed today by GM? My top brand after that would be BMW/Mini, then Nissan/Infiniti. I wouldn't buy another GM brand after that, and Ford/Chrysler don't interest me.

I would like to know about the performance variants of the Grand Prix...sat down next to an old man at the local Waffle House eating breakfast the other day, and we started talking cars. Turned out he was a lifelong Pontiac guy, and his favourite car had been a 71 Grand Prix with of all things a solid lifter version of the Pontiac 400. Anyone here know how rare that car was? (he sold it in 83, so I'd venture to guess its sadly no longer around)Any other specs on the 69-72 Grand Prix models that were performance oriented? The old guys former GP was cool...bright yellow with a green interior and a green vynal top. THAT color scheme says 1971, fo sho... Damn shame …

http://blogs.automobilemag.com/65073...ent/index.html Pontiac’s demise may not seem like a big deal these days. The brand has only two cars worth test-driving, the G8 and Solstice, and either would look fine in a Chevrolet showroom. Back in the 1960s though, Pontiac was third in the marketplace, behind only Chevy and Ford, and was undoubtedly number one in the hearts and minds of teenaged baby boomers. A lot of that had to do with the efforts of ad man Jim Wangers, who shrewdly crafted the brand’s edgy, high-performance image. More importantly, he was a real car guy, and could often be seen at drag strips or prowling Detroit’s Woodward Avenue in a souped up, “Royal Bobc…

Holden working on Take Two of its Commodore export program to North America By JOHN MELLOR 28 April 2009 http://www.goauto.com.au/mellor/mellor.nsf...A2575A6002BF980 ONE of the clear messages coming from inside Holden is that the end of Pontiac may not be the end of Australian exports to the US. In fact, there are some suggestions that freeing Holden from a struggling brand, which has admitted it did not have enough money to promote the Australian-made Pontiac G8, would give Holden the opportunity to align its export hopes with a GM brand with a stronger future and more resources. One Holden insider told GoAuto: “We are not going to give up on getting the Commod…

Don't think this has been posted, if it has, my apologies ... Jamie LaReau Automotive News April 24, 2009 - 1:45 pm ET UPDATED: 4/24/09 4:10 p.m. ET General Motors is preparing to announce early next week that the Pontiac brand will be eliminated, said a source familiar with the company's plans. The announcement will be made as part of an updated viability report to the U.S. auto task force, the source said. A second source indicated earlier this week that GM, surviving with $15.4 billion in U.S. bailout funds, was considering phasing out Pontiac instead of sticking with a plan to have it continue as a niche brand. In its proposal to the U.S. Treasury on …

In news that will doubtlessly result in a chorus of "We told you so" forehead-slaps from critics who noted the arrival of the Pontiac G3 with disdain, word is that General Motors has a bumper crop of the Korean-built subcompacts sitting on its lots. How many? According to The Wall Street Journal, nearly a two-year supply at current sales rates. In the course of doing some research, writer Neal Boudette discovered that GM has 3,479 unsold G3 units clogging up its dealers and vacant lots. Combined with the knowledge that dealers sold just 141 units of the car in March (or one unit for every 19 of GM's 2,700 Pontiac stores), that means that GM has a supply of these Chevrol…

Holden-powered all-wheel-drive Insignia VXR turbo could wear HSV badges By MARTON PETTENDY 16 April 2009 Revealed simultaneously yesterday in Germany as the Opel Insignia OPC and in Britain as the Vauxhall Insignia VXR ahead of the latter’s global debut at the Barcelona motor show on May 7, the hottest version of General Motors’ new mid-sized European model packs all-wheel drive and a Holden-built turbocharged V6. HSV managing director Phil Harding told GoAuto last December it was negotiating with GM in Europe to import the hottest versions of both the Insignia and Corsa, the previous generation of which was sold here as the Holden Barina. HSV spokesman Simon Fros…

Australian car assembly industry doomed Tuesday, April 14th, 2009 www.dogandlemon.com/.../australian-car-industry-doomed Australia’s car assembly industry will not survive the economic recession, and Holden will probably be the first to go, says the car buyers’ Dog & Lemon Guide. Editor Clive Matthew-Wilson said today: Matthew-Wilson believes Holden will be the first to go, followed by Ford and then Toyota. Matthew-Wilson believes that the State and Federal governments’ multi-million dollar assistance to Australian car companies will simply be wasted. Matthew-Wilson believes the government money would have been better spent by giving it to…

Why does the media and DC politicians keeping harping on the need for GM to reduce brands? Isn't Pontiac-Buick-GMC one brand? Maybe reduce overlap in these brands. But please enough about too many brands. GM's problems are far deeper than the number of dealerships and brands.

So I was at my local dealership getting my oil life monitor recall taken care of, and I decided to check out the showroom, chat up the salespeople and such. Checked out the interior of an '09 Astra 5 door, and although a minor change, they changed the interior plastic from silver to graphite grey. I thought it made the interior look more upscale. Not to say I don't like the silver in the 08's, however the graphite look is more understated and the dash doesn't have that plasticky look to it anymore. In fact, they changed it to the same color as found on the center stack of my vue. Still no Aux jack though, which was disappointing.

Hi- There I was blasting down I-696 on way way to work.... When I see an aluminum flat bed with a G8 on it... It was bright red with fat tires and big exhaust, and I thought -no way- It had SLP tags and a scripted tag -Firehwawk- The hood was black and wasn't stock -some rise to it, didn't get to see the hood too good. He turned off 696 and headed North I-75 .. Probably SLP Eng. in Troy. The thought crossed my brain that I should share on C&G soooo... anyways- I don't now if it was a prototype or 1 of xxx? Just that I saw an uncovered badass Poncho on a Jerr-Dan. I have been busy and sort of lost interest in posting for a while, things have been rough at…

Pontiac and the Trailer Trash Source: http://blogs.edmunds.com/straightline/2009...photopanel..5.* This semi-regular column is written (in his own blood) by an automotive sage and noted malcontent, known as The Mechanic. Mercilessly beaten as a child with rolled-up back issues of old car magazines, our free-spoken hero developed a unique "for your own good" take on cars and the auto industry, along with an unfortunate habit of setting himself ablaze. Later, after a distinguished career as an automotive journalist and magazine editor, he cast off the reins of his musty oppressors, carved out his superego with a plastic spork and became The Mechanic. I don't know ho…

I am no expert and don't claim to be. But how do you shrink a company into greatness? How did killing Oldsmobile help GM gain market share, sales and reduce costs? When you shrink a company, you no longer offer variety. Can someone here tell me why shrinking or killing Pontiac is a good thing and how it will save GM? Show me a company that shrunk itself to prosperity? GM's problems is the high cost per vehicle compared to the low profit per vehicle. How will cutting dealers accomplish this? Shouldn't a company be expanding? GM has lost its swagger. Pontiac a niche brand? Did Pontiac or Buick increase sales after Oldsmobile died? Maybe the Impala and CTS gained a fe…

When Looks Are Everything Source: http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Drive...photopanel..4.* Our hopes were high following the debut of the 2009 Pontiac Solstice Coupe at the 2008 New York Auto Show last year. We had not forgotten the ergonomic shortcomings of the Solstice. Nor had its functional limitations slipped our minds. It was mechanically the same curvaceous Solstice that had made us swoon in 2006. Only now it had a bitchin' hardtop. So here we stand again with hearts racing and gaze locked on the 2009 Pontiac Solstice GXP Coupe. The GXP offers you 260 horsepower from its turbocharged Ecotec inline-4 and big tires to put the power to good use, so it's a …

Link to Article Australian company wants Pontiac G8 to be next cop cruiser Police agencies across the United States are chock full of Crown Victoria cruisers. In all, there are over 80,000 Crown Vics on patrol, but the generations-old cruiser is finally getting consigned to history within the next year. That leaves a huge opening to any company that has a suitable replacement, and an Australian company thinks it has what it takes. Melbourne's National Safety Agency is working on newer, safer and more efficient technology for large markets like the US, UK and Canada, and they have a very solid partner in Holden. Holden builds both the Commodore and the Pontiac G8, g…

I know I am in the minority around here but I really like the updated G6 alot, way better than the old one. MCE has improved the front and rear along with center stack, and gauges. Also you can get a 4 cylinder six speed automatic in the coupe and that is standard and optional on the sedan with the sports package. All GT models can now run on FLEX FUEL E85 with the 3.5L V6. So here come the photos...

So, I finally got a chance to test drive a G8 GT. Awesome car. Absolutely awesome. Can't wait to drive one like I stole it. Unfortunately, due to my suddenly questionable employment status, I might not be able to get a G8 GXP until the fall... but I can see buying a lot of these as they age... stockpiling them like my B-body collection. I can even see myself going a coupe conversion on a G8, if GM won't. However, after test driving the G8, I have a minor gripe. I can fit in it and drive it... barely. I'd really like to see an inch more rearward travel. But the location of the passenger front seat is ASININE! With both seats as far back as they will go, the pas…

David Sedgwick Automotive News February 13, 2009 - 11:42 am ET I was a believer. I really thought Saturn could succeed -- if only General Motors would Europeanize the brand. I saw the light -- or so I thought -- in 2004 during a GM press trip at a swanky resort in Fayence, a town near the French Riviera. I offered Bob Lutz some free advice: Borrow Opel's cars for the U.S. market. American motorists would appreciate compact Euro cars with sporty handling. He smiled -- Lutz was way ahead of me on this one. He invited me to join him down on the lawn, where half a dozen Saturns and soon-to-be-Saturns were lined up. It was just before the Paris auto show. That…
