If I suddenly found myself in the market for a new car in the latter-half of the year, what would be the chances of 3-dr XR manuals being available? Or would I be stuck with a 5-dr XR or waiting for the next MY?

Are You (Alpha) Man Enough? By Daniel Pund, Senior Editor, Detroit Date posted: 02-13-2008 The 2008 Hummer H3 Alpha reminds us of an old advertisement for Marlboro cigarettes, the one where a cowboy is seen lighting his cigarette from a flaming log plucked from the campfire. You see, cowboys don't use Bics or Crickets. Hell, this guy is so manly he doesn't even use the manliest, smelliest of lighters, the Zippo. Hell no. He uses a chunk of fiery lumber like a real man — a Marlboro man — is supposed to. Similarly, the 2008 Hummer H3 Alpha seems to say, "Let the crossovers have their comfy rides and reasonable step-in heights and decent cargo space and fuel econom…

How did GM convince its dealers to accept a car that was going to sell at 30-40k a year vs. the Ion that was selling at like 150k a year? Won't this be a lot of lost sales for Saturn? Chris

Yeah, I know it's not exactly the G8, but, since we haven't seen a G8 in action, this is as close as we're going to get for the moment. I'll also say this: after seeing the VXR8 in action, I would like to try to have a G8 in my driveway in the future. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_HPSOGcnD4

Fellow C&Gers, I'm looking for a used car to replace my Pathfinder in this era of Iraqi involvement and crappy gas prices. Two of the cars I've found in this area via AutoTrader are an 01 and 02 Oldsmobile Aurora V6. Both have a reasonable amount of miles (69k for the 01, 70k for the 02).and the pictures show very intact interiors. I'm asking if there are any potential problems with the Auroras that I should watch out for.

http://www.edmunds.com/insideline/do/Featu...cleId=124607#24 Not a bad write up... Not a good write up either because it pretty much gives NO information about the car what-so-ever (That you couldn't get from looking over the press release) I really didn't appreciate the ending... I think it's pretty damn cool that you can get this much car for $27-$29 and I think it'll be very beneficial to Pontiac. It's almost as if GM spent a few dollars on the G8, and the media rags know that. So, they'll go out of their way not to promote the car or give it the credit it deserves.

Jens Dralle Automotive News December 24, 2007 - 12:01 am ET SAN DIEGO - Bringing the redesigned Opel Astra to North America as a Saturn has saved General Motors about $900 million in development costs, says GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz. "Its adaptation to American requirements cost less than $100 million," Lutz said at a press event here. "In the future, Opel and Saturn will share about 90 percent of their model portfolios." The front-drive hatchback goes on sale in North America in January in three trim levels: the five-door XE priced at $15,995, the five-door XR at $17,545 and a sporty three-door XR priced at $18,495. Prices include shipping. The Saturn Ast…

I have a sickness... I just bought my 3rd Saturn on Saturday. To confirm the sickness... each time I buy a Saturn, it's crappier than the last one! lol (Fortunately, each has also been a fraction of the price. ) Bought a 1993 SL2 for $300. A few minor scrapes on the outside, a trashed but fairly solid/intact interior, a properly working auto tranny, and a badly misfiring DOHC engine. Interestingly enough, while the car basically ran on 3 cylinders at idle/putting around town, it all smoothed out like there was no problem on the highway, and I had no trouble driving it 1 1/2 hours home. Further investigation shows that the misfire is probably from a need of a valve …

GM bringing 1.4L turbo four to market next year Link to AutoBlog General Motors has announced that it's bringing out a new 1.4L turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine next year, which will help the automaker increase cars' fuel economy while presumably not sacrificing power. A normally-aspirated version of this motor is currently offered across the pond in the Opel Astra 5-door. Dubbed the 1.4 Twinport Ecotec, the Euro-spec NA version makes 90 horsepower at 5600 RPM, 92 lb-ft of torque at 4000 RPM, and gets 38.5 US miles per gallon in the combined cycle. With a snail attached, the little 1.4L should easily corral over one hundred horses. According to GM's Jim …

Despite strong interest within GM, the VE Sportwagon will not make it to America By BYRON MATHIOUDAKIS in DETROIT 15 January 2008 www.goauto.com.au HOLDEN will not export the VE Sportwagon to the United States in the foreseeable future as Americans continue to ignore wagons in virtually any size and form – in contrast to the situation in Europe where such vehicles have a healthy share of the market. This was the bombshell dropped by General Motors' product czar Bob Lutz this week to the Australian media at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. "We looked at that, but the amount of change to meet US regulations was going to be quite a lot of mone…

GM's World Car Seeks To Conquer America By Scott Oldham, Inside Line Editor in Chief | Link to Original Article @ Edmunds | Date posted: 09-26-2007 One letter. On paper, only one letter separates Frankfort, Ohio from Frankfurt, Germany. In reality, the two cities could not be more different. One is a small town with a blue-collar population of 1,045; the other is a true international city of 650,000 with industries ranging from biotechnology to banking. Regardless, General Motors is betting the same small car will play in both places. The car is the Astra, and history supports the theory. I was able to convert my Mom away from her 2002 Ford Explorer. That car has been sturdy and comfortable for 91,000 miles, but it was time to move on. After comparing the Acadia and Outlook, the Saturn won. She picked her '08 Outlook XR this afternoon. Silver with black leather, quad bucket seats, and tow package. The dealer experience was a pleasure, although the trade-in appraisal on the Explorer was unreasonably low. Hence, the Explorer was not traded-in, and is being sold directly to a new driver (16 year old female) in the family tomorrow. Upon visiting to the Dealer yesterday, the salesperson told me there is a rumor that the G8 will be made in Canada, after Chevy is ready to build Camaro there, since Camaro's will be built in Canada, he told me that there is a rumor floating around that G8's production will also make it into Canada as well. Has anyone heard about it? or is it just a rumor? Just wonderring, though I will never buy G8 in either case, since I still believe the price is way too much for what it really is, well, to me.

Last month the family 2000 Honda Civic LX was totaled in an accident. After surviving a month of Caliber ownership (our rental car from hell) yesterday we picked up a brand new 2007 Pontiac G6 with the 3.5L V6, chrome apperance pkg, perfered pkg, and sport pkg. Ours is a black 4 dr, 4 spd auto and "ebony" cloth interior. We were also able to take advantage of $2500 cash back and an addition $500 conquest cash since the car we were replacing was a Honda. With 3 Oldsmobiles, a Buick, and now a Pontiac our driveway looks like a GM used car lot.

2009 Solstice Facelift Draws from G6 GXP Link to Original Article on Autoblog Oh no. Blogger Mickey Kaus says that he's seen an updated Pontiac Solstice ('09, presumably, since the '08 is unchanged), and that the new front clip sports the unbecoming, "tongue-thrusting" look of the current G6 GXP. Let's hope what Kaus saw was just some driver with poor taste rolling with an aftermarket nose, because the Solstice is not in need of a factory-prescribed rhinoplasty. GM would do well to focus on further refining the next generation of the car and not engage in ill-advised interim facelifts just for the sake of having them.

Pontiac has said to Auto Week that the G8 will come standard in the V6 and V8 with the FE2 suspension. This is a change on the V6 as it was to have had the FE1. The FE 2 is a much better set up and more fitting for this car even with a V6. Also they did say the Standard Tranny is coming but it just won't be there for the start of production.

Someone stated in the Astra thread that they were impressed by the fuel economy from the 1.8L, so I decided to look up the specs on the website. According to GM Canada: Astra 3-door: manual - 33 hwy / 46 city auto - 34 hwy / 43 city 138 hp / 125 ft/lb Cobalt 2.2L: manual - 31 hwy / 48 city auto - 31 hwy / 44 city 148 hp / 152 ft/lb Considering the 10 hp, 27 ft/lb loss going from the 2.2l to the 1.8l, I don't think that 2-3 highway mpg gained and 1-2 city mpg lost is very impressive. Thoughts?

This is a very in-depth and thorough Astra review, and they think GM definitely has a winner. http://car-reviews.automobile.com/Saturn/r...road-test/5304/ Some great quotes: All that was left was a small car to round out the lineup, and change Saturn's brand image from one that sells on price to one that can lure in a more sophisticated buyer through the strength of its products. The Astra is that car, without doubt. I knew it as soon as I took a seat inside after its auto show reveal, and just had it confirmed in spades during its introductory launch program in California. As you can see, I'm grasping at straws here, or at least clutching onto grab handles to come …

Well it looks like the UTE is going to be a G8 ST per Autoblog reports. Here is what was posted. Mike Levine over at Pickuptruck.com has managed to scoop a tasty nugget of info about the Pontiac-branded ute that will soon be for sale in the U.S. The Aussie-import based on the same platform as the rear-wheel-drive G8 sedan will be called the G8 ST, as in "Sport Truck". That pang of disappointment you feel is the missed opportunity of paying homage to GM's most well known car-based pickups and their colorful names: the Chevy El Camino and GMC Caballero. Rather than dubbing Pontiac's ute the "Tamale" or "El Camino Redux", we get a measly little two-letter suffix. Sigh. …

I just got the new Autoweek and they love Pontiac's new car. They have gone to say it is the best car Pontiac has ever offered. They said it was a blast to drive and clearly the best sedan in it's class. They said it was not a smooth at its limits where it got a little ragged compared to a A6, 5 Series or E class. But keep in mnd all were much more expensive cars and they did not fault the G8 for how it performed in it's price class. They also drove the V6 and liked it but could not push it with the PR guy with them. They did note it was slower and ws not available with the FE2 suspension as the GT was. They did ask if it might be offered and did note Pontiac liste…

Just got my November 12 issue of Autoweek, and they give a mostly good review of the new ASTRA, lauding it for its highway stability (an Autobahn essential, so no surprise), its nicely made interior (while saying it is too dark), its good looks, and its robust-feeling chassis. Saturn claims a 9.7 second 0-60 time, and 28 mpg. It achieved 26 mpg in the test, not too bad I guess, for magazine leadfoots. Some complaints include: high highway revs (and subsequent buzziness from the 1.8L Ecotec) and windnoise from the A-pillars. Their as-tested price for a 3-door XR: $19,735. Thinking back to my VWs, they were geared toward high highway revs (and buzziness) as well, I …

This is one hell of a sendoff IMO. Gentlemen Held Doors For Ladies, Gas Was Five Cents a Gallon, and Oldsmobile was the Standard of American Syle... At least one thing hasn't changed. Frank was Chairman, Elvis Was King... And Oldsmobile Ruled the Road.

Does anyone have an idea as to why the G8 did not make the cut in Motor Trends' 2008 Car of the Year competiton? I found it odd and a little infuriating. Just wondering.

GM @ South Florida Auto Show 2008 Saturn ASTRA 2008 Saturn AURA 2008 Saturn VUE Green Line Those Astras are the same pre-pro ones I saw up in Detroit; however, they have their headlamps on, making this photo-worthy. The 2008 AURAs now carry engine badging since the XE can now be had with a 2.4l. Neither Miami nor Tampa featured at 2.4l AURA. This is also the first time I've seen the new VUE Green Line.

This happened a few days ago in Sydney. The uninsured lightweight Lamborghini SV (no ABS on that model) left 80 metre skid marks. All people involved are OK, but sore. (According to a somebody in the know, the yearly insurance figure on that Lambo would be around AUD$7000)

With runaway sales of Toyota's Prius, Where is GM's Prius? I believe that Saturn would be better served if it had a hybrid exclusive model like the Prius. I believe that instead of giving Chevy the Volt, why not make it Saturn's flagship? I propose killing the Aura & the poor selling Outlook and send the Astra to Pontiac. The Vue would become a plug-in hybrid only. Saturn would become GM's first Hybrid brand. I believe Saturn could also act as venue for introducing electric and hydrogen powered vehicles. I believe sales of the Saturn Volt & Vue will run between 200-250k. I realize this is wholly unrealistic but, its still an interesting idea that…

Earlier we reported that a second version of the G8 would become available for the 2009 model year. We were not sure whether the vehicle was a performance variant, AWD variant, or something else, but we now have confirmation that a G8 GXP is in fact coming. The previous thread can be viewed HERE. As stated in that thread, the G8 GXP is still slated to begin production late 2008. It's less than a year away from production now. G8 production was supposed to start today, but it has been pushed back for another 10 days for whatever reason. I would expect the G8 GXP to have an LS3 and 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions, though that is pure speculation on my part.

Helping Hummer GM tries to improve brand's fuel economy By RICK KRANZ | Link to Original Article @ AutoWeek | Updated: 06/18/07, 8:25 am et DURANGO, Colo. -- As the sun rises over downtown Durango, residents head to work in a parade of SUVs and pickups. Nestled amid the Rocky Mountains, this small town embraces the four-wheel-drive lifestyle. A popular pastime is rock climbing - motorized, that is, behind the wheel of a Chevy, Jeep or Toyota. But over at the Rochester Hotel on Second Avenue, several workers assigned to the Hummer press event here are washing off the residue of broken eggs hurled at a dozen 2008 Hummer H2s. Hummer has an image problem. It is the p…

I have been very busy for the past 4 weeks half a$$ car shopping in part because of the new 3,000 rebate on Equinox/Torrent got me thinking. Either way my sons car *actually mine!* is getting old. The Grand Prix has been a good car for us but at 115,000 miles and rattles and that dent in the door, I have been thinking about getting him something newer. My wife has had the same thought. He had just said get a Torrent or Equinox and hand the Impala down to him. Fact is my wife loves that car (I have no clue why she loves it, it is just a nice car!). She wants to try to save money and go used... I would love to actually give GM some buisness and go new. I have been consideri…

Hello everyone, I have the car itch again. Its a curse, after deciding not to buy the Aurora because it was over 9 grand I am hunting again. I came across a 2007 Pontiac Torrent FWD. I know I can find a stripped Torrent without tinted windows and cruise for like 19 grand. Those are two features I really want. I since have found 2007 Pontiac Torrent FWD with the pref. package, and Onstar giving me all the options I'd want except the trailer tow package and the 17's. Two things I can frankly live without for the price they are asking. They have reduced the price at least once and it is down to $17,000.00. It only has 6,000 miles on it and in is great shape. I do have one …
