I have stacks of small prizes here to give out but no contests to go with it. We need to think up some contests so I can clean my office out. I have hats, branded USB drives, a Jeep first aid kit (very heavy/rugged), a 3M restoration kit, and an R/C Cadillac Escalade. So help think up some contests!

Mahindra trying to back away from another U.S. deal? by Zach Bowman (RSS feed) on Dec 27th 2010 at 8:29AM After Mahindra notoriously backed out of a deal with a U.S. supplier, Compact pickup fans are still licking their wounds over the news that the company's trucks won't be coming to our shores anytime soon. As it turns out, Global Vehicles USA may not be the only American company to have been wronged by Mahindra. According to The Post-Standard, electric car start-up Bannon Automotive LLC has filed a law-suit against both Reva Electric Car Company of Bangalore, India and Reva's parent company, Mahindra & Mahindra. Bannon Automotive claims that the two broke a dea…

Just got some insider info from a friend who works at Hyundia. He said some models are showing advanced rust to the sub frames and control arms. These are not 10 year old cars either. He did not give me the model names in the e mail but will post them when I find out. He said the fix right now is to drill the frame, hit it with a hammer to break lose the rust and then pump it full of wax. Needless to say he was not impressed with the fix. Might want to see if anyone else speak of this since it has not been reported in the press.

The German SuperBrand Battle. Editor-in-Chief's Note: Audi (VW Group), BMW and Mercedes-Benz (Daimler) are locked in an all-out battle for prestige luxury bragging rights, and it's about to get even nastier. BMW (including its Mini brand) is out to increase its annual sales a staggering 55 percent by 2020, which equates to 2 million vehicles annually. They sold 1.29 million vehicles last year. And we all know VW's plan, which is to have Audi keep pouring on the coals and ratcheting up its sales numbers to pass BMW and Mercedes - while riding a huge wave of popularity in China - not to mention VW's plan to sell 800,000 vehicles in the U.S. by 2018. And Mercedes? They don't…

Do you even know we have a C&G Store? If not, check it out! C&G Company Store C&G CafePress Store Would anyone be interest in purchasing products such as... Calendar featuring members' cars - photographs would be selected by voting; those who win would be included in the calendar. Design Showcase merchandise - T-shirts, mousepads, and other items featuring sketches and 'chops from our Design Showcase. Here's an example... This particular shirt retails for $11.49. Remember, all profits go directly to supporting C&G and its activities (site upgrades, purchasing spyshots for your viewing, etc). Any suggestions or comments on this at all?

Toyota and Japanese under attack in Europe as Koreans close in Toyota is on the retreat in Europe as well as America, as its reputation for writing the book on quality was trashed by the recall debacle. But the noise surrounding the global recall of 9.4 million Toyotas and upmarket Lexus vehicles has drowned out a deeper and wider malaise which started way before the unintended acceleration crisis hit last year, and which also involves most Japanese companies operating in Europe. Their market share has been declining for some time and the South Koreans are taking it. Hyundai and its sister company Kia of Korea are using the old Japanese play book against the originator…

Why does the administrator delete a link that doesn't have anything more than a link? He seems to want you to discuss what is in the link in addition to posting a link. Why? Besides his forum..his rules? Is the DO NOT SPAM message an automatic link? Or does he personally E Mail everyone who posts a link without additional words/comments. Somehow to accuse someone of spam (for sending one link) seems a bit offensive. Thanks.

OK I started noticing that I was getting ads on every page, so I knew it was time to renew my "premium subscriber" status here at C&G. I inquired about it but didn't hear anything. Then I got an email showing an automatic payment being taken out of my credit card, supposedly renewing my account. But I've still got ads everywhere, and it still says "members" at my avatar, not "premium subscriber" or whatever it should say. Posting this here to try to find out what is happening. Thanks. I've lost my privileges and they have not been restored after the automatic payment. Anyone else in the same boat?

July 7th, 2013 - State of the Site This will be less a "State of the Site" and more a "State of Drew". As you know, I haven't been around as much lately. Work has kept me on the road all year up until recently. From mid-February till late May I was battling constant colds and exhaustion to the point where my doctor told me that I had to knock off my work schedule or face more serious illness. From mid-May till the end of this week, I have been missing two of my staff at my day job who have been out for medical reasons (lucky them!). Since Mid-July, my work travel is done until end of August, so I finally have had the chance to catch up on things at home and recupera…

I think it would make the member concerns and staff members' announcements more visible and people may pay more attention to them. Just a thought.

Four Nissan, Toyota SUVs Offer Lackluster Rollover Protection By Bengt Halvorson Deputy Editor August 19th, 2010 2010 Toyota 4Runner TrailEnlarge PhotoSeveral popular mid-size SUVs from Nissan and Toyota—the 2010 Nissan Xterra, Toyota FJ Cruiser, Toyota 4Runner, and Nissan Pathfinder—have earned only lackluster rollover ratings in the latest round of testing from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). But these ratings, just released from insurance-funded testing authority, don't say anything about the vehicles' propensity to roll over (unlike those from the federal government); rather, they gauge the likelihood of serious injury and the amount of structu…

AW Press drew a laugh with a recommendation he offered for anyone depressed about the current state of affairs in the industry. "Do me a favor and visit the maternity ward of any hospital," he said. "Every one of those little blue and pink baskets represents 14 or 15 purchase cycles." - Toyota is benefiting from what he termed a tailwind. But Press pointed out that the industry is cyclical, and Toyota's fortunes could decline, too. "We have no interest in GM declining. We have no interest in becoming number one," he said. "GM is a global icon. They support the economy, and they represent the strength of the industry. There is no joy in the difficulties they're having…

The industry expects total output to reach 1.15 million cars and trucks for the year. Exports will surpass 450,000 units, making Thailand the seventh largest vehicle exporter in the world. Mazda, Ford, GM, Mitsubishi, Toyota and Isuzu ship cars and trucks to 106 countries from factories here. Thailand is already the second largest pickup truck market on t…

I don't want this to get lost in the Google Ads thread. Please read, comment, and suggest alterations. I'm pretty much set on this direction generally, but refinements are welcome. ------- Here is my vision for Cheers and Gears. I don't care if we have 500 members of 500,000.... that's not how I'm measuring our success. Eventually, and with the appropriate software development changes, I want C&G to be an automotive Wikipedia with the best forums (not necessarily biggest) around. I want C&G to be the reference site for car people to learn about the "stovebolt chevy" then kick around and argue about it. I want C&G to offer the automotive news, but…

Europe could be largest global market for electric cars Luca Ciferri Automotive News Europe -- October 28, 2010 09:25 CET TURIN – Europe could become the largest global market for battery-powered electric vehicles by far, predict analysts J. D. Power and Associates. But EV volumes will still be lower than some automakers' expectations. By 2020, EV sales in Europe could reach 742,020 units, or 3.1 percent of 23.8 million sales predicted for that year, according to a report by California-based J. D. Power. China would be the second EV largest market with unit sales of 332,775 and a 1.9 percent market share. The United States would be third in term of unit sales, 107,…

I may be out of line here, seeing as I mostly read instead of post anything; however, one thing I am always in search of is reports and database information that lists various important details. The search function seems to freeze up on me on a regular basis, and wading through Google has become a royal PITA. Might it be possible to have a section dedicated to the charts and information related to quality control databases and manufacturer recall tallies? I don't mean to suggest that it be put together as a kind of score-board, as I just know people are likely to reference the content with just that in mind; rather, I figured it would simply make things a tad easier w…

I just wanted to let you all know that I am (and have been) working on a major site reorganization. I'm coming to the point where things I change will start to be noticeable to general users. I just wanted to let you know the changes in store before they happen. This is not an exhaustive list, but intended to cover the major points. I've been a little annoyed by the latest PM settings on the forums. Why China's rise is good and bad for Germany July 20, 2010 - 11:00 pm ET Douglas A. Bolduc Douglas A. Bolduc is a special correspondent for Automotive News Europe BMW's, Mercedes-Benz's and Audi's German plants are running at full speed right now. The reason: wealthy car buyers in China currently have an insatiable desire to own German luxury cars. "There are more than 900,000 millionaires in China and many of them are bursting to show off their wealth," Sascha Gommel, a Frankfurt-based analyst with Commerzbank AG, told Bloomberg last week. To keep up with the demand in the world's largest car market, Daimler has hired 1,800 temporary workers and added Saturday shift…

In the past couple weeks, the moderating team has noticed that some members who have chosen to ignore others have decided to post screen shots of the page that says "you have chosen to ignore _________." This is highly frowned upon, as it creates nothing but tension between members, and it is rather childish. We would like to issue a fair warning to everyone about this, so that everyone knows that posting something along these lines is unacceptable. Thank you, The Moderating Team.

Europe's carmakers say economy is far from stable Automotive News Europe -- February 24, 2010 08:54 CET FRANKFURT (Reuters) – The European auto industry does not expect a quick recovery this year, said Dieter Zetsche, president of the Brussels-based industry body ACEA. Zetsche, who is also CEO of Daimler AG, warned that sales of commercial vehicles that closely follow the economic cycle would "at best be flat" after dropping by one-third in 2009. "If the economy looks better in 2010, it's only when compared with 2009. And that's why it is so critically important not to endanger whatever little stabilization has been achieved," he said in prepared remarks at the 2010 …

[source: MotorAuthority] Mercedes Benz Targets 0.20Cd Drag Coefficient in Next Five Years Sometimes, making cars more efficient is best done through the application of more fundamental principles such as improved aerodynamics, rather than complex and expensive powertrain upgrades. Mercedes Benz is embracing that philosophy, with a plan to bring the respective drag coefficients of its cars below 0.20Cd within the next five years. The carmaker claims it already produces the world's most aerodynamic production car - the new 2010 E-Class Coupe, which scores a drag coefficient figure of 0.24Cd. The new coupe even manages to out-slip th…

Japanese automakers expected to increase overseas production Christine Tierney / The Detroit News Japanese automakers, grappling with a strong currency and flagging demand in their home market, are likely to boost production abroad, adding the equivalent of four assembly plants in North America by 2017, according to new forecast. Toyota Motor Corp., Nissan Motor Co., Honda Motor Co. and other Japanese automakers now have the combined capacity to produce 5.36 million cars and light trucks in North America. By the end of 2016, they're expected to add capacity totaling just over 800,000 vehicles, Masatoshi Nishimoto, a forecaster at IHS Automotive, said at a news briefin…

Meanwhile, the Ford Fiesta passed the Peugeot 207 and Renault Clio, -- its main rivals in the subcompact class -- to finish the year in second place. (See table, below) The Fiesta is the newest of the strong-selling subcompacts, having debuted in 2008. All three cars benefited from car scrapping subsidies offered in the major European markets. Tata to offer 4-year warranty on Nano Safety fears after several models catch fire Automotive News Europe -- December 9, 2010 08:16 CET MUMBAI (Reuters) -- India's Tata Motors Ltd. will offer a four-year manufacturer's warranty on Nano cars. It's a perk that will be extended to all existing customers of the vehicle. There have been concerns over the car's safety after several of them caught fire in the last year. As you know, last night the server experienced some major issues again. Well today, I approached a person recommended to me by other people who run this same software. On the forum for IP.Board admins that I frequent, Gary is often mentioned as a savior. Well, today he did just that for us. The problem last night wasn't that Cheers and Gears doesn't have enough server. No, in fact, the server we have is way more powerful than we really need. By my calculations, we could be 5 to 6 times our current size and traffic levels.... if the server is configured properly. Essentially, we have a Z-06 engine under the hood here. And there in was our problem. I am an I.T. guy... bu…

Just a reminder that if you see an article or thread on Cheers and Gears that you enjoy, we ask that you might share it on the other social networks that you use. If you liked our coverage of the LA Auto Show this year, please consider sharing the LA Auto Show page with your friends. Those of you new to the site might not know it, but I travel to each of the big 4 auto shows every year during press day to get on site photos from the show floor. It costs money to attend these shows. More page views means more ad dollars and also means potentially more access to early information. We also don't mind if you follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ and shar…

WE'RE MOVING! Hey guys! The migration has begun! Hopefully, you won't notice much downtime. If you do, you should get a message at cheersandgears.com stating that we're moving. We plan for most (if not all) topics/posts to be safely moved to the new host. Is there anyway to disable the minimum character rule for the forum search? Since many cars on this forum have 2-3 character names, this rule makes it tough to search for them

Toyota, Honda race Daimler to gain hybrid foothold in Europe Automotive News Europe -- October 6, 2010 10:45 CET (Bloomberg) -- Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. are rushing to exploit their advantage in hybrid systems to make inroads in Europe. Daimler AG and PSA/Peugeot-Citroen plan to stop them before they have the chance. Toyota began selling the U.K.-built Auris compact hybrid in Europe in July and will add the Lexus CT 200h, a hybrid hatchback designed for Europe, in 2011. Honda will roll out a Jazz hatchback hybrid in Europe next year, adding to three gas- electric models it already sells in the region. Asian carmakers aim to use their edge in hybrid vehic…

Just a suggestion but I feel it would be a good idea to extend the forum width to 97% or 98%. The important content is in a box that's too narrow with the sidebar on the right. It's just wasted space on either side - might as well utilize it...

Anyone else having issues attaching photos to posts today? I've tried a few times, and they seem to attach (either doing 'choose files' or dragging them, and they seem to attach--no error, but then they show up just as a picture icon rather than the photo.

Ghosn says Renault-Nissan EVs may be profitable in 3 years Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn has predicted battery-powered autos may account for 10 percent of global auto sales by 2020. November 18, 2010 15:00 CET TOKYO (Bloomberg) -- Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn said the alliance's electric cars business may be profitable within three years as the two automakers plan to introduce new models. “There are customers who want really zero emission cars,” Ghosn said in an interview with Bloomberg Television in New York Wednesday. “This segment is going to grow with time.” Ghosn has predicted battery-powered autos may account for 10 percent of global auto sales by 2020. Hi…

There used to be a function called "my last posts" where I could see what i have commented on. Did we lose this? Can we get it back? Is there a way to do this that I just am not seeing?

Often, I find myself trying to dig up an image gallery for a vehicle that was announced several months ago. Digging through search pages and whatnot just to find a decent picture of the interior (because, for some reason, decent pictures of GM vehicles are hard to find on the intertron). I was thinking that maybe there could be a separate page, forum, stickied thread that links to all of the image galleries we have. Would make it a lot easier to view some often hard-to-find pictures of vehicles. This could also include image galleries for other makes as well, if someone wanted. Just a suggestion! Thanks!

Thank you to whomever updated the description line for the "Future Buick Models/Concepts." A website has the potential to be kept as current as possible, and this small example makes a lot of difference!

It took a long, LONG time but I can finally appreciate Invision Power Board. This place is looking very nice and runs really well. It's very clean and easy to use. I haven't tried mobile yet but I imagine it's also looking very good. I've used this software as an admin in the past and had a lot of trouble feeling comfortable with it. Now it appears to be one of the better options available. I may even give it another try myself... In any event, IPB kept me away from here before recently. I very much disliked using the older versions. Now I find myself dropping in more and more...

http://www.nyse.com/interface/jsp/NHDetail...isdowjones=true "Not everyone is backing away from the fleet market. Toyota Motor Corp. ( 7203.TO), the top-selling Japanese automaker, boosted fleet sales 16% in the first seven months of 2005 compared to the like period in 2004, according to R.L. Polk, while Nissan Motor Co. (7201.TO) and Honda Motor Co. (7267.TO) have upped fleet business 25% and 30% respectively. Even though each of Japan's Big Three have boosted sales in 2005, fleet increases far outpace the rate of growth for each company."

For whatever reason it appears members can't post in the SEMA section? If no one can post, I'll move all the topics to the auto show section rather than the SEMA section. I look at all the settings in the Admin panel but everything appears to be fine to me, so I don't know what the problem would be. Let me know if you can't post there so I can move the topics ASAP.
