From the 'this isn't April Fools Day' file, Mercedes-Benz is considering splitting its SUV lineup into two parts; those with off-road capabilities and those without. According to Automotive News, the company is planning to this after they launch a production version of the Concept Coupé SUV which will compete with the BMW X6. The new model is expected to arrive sometime next year. "The Concept Coupe SUV previews a four-door, coupe-styled model that will appeal to customers who want a sportily designed vehicle with a high seating position, " said Thomas Weber, Mercedes-Benz's r&d chief. Weber also hinted that a coupe-styled version of the new GLA-Class crossover. S…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com January 10, 2013 Yesterday, we introduced you to most of the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class lineup. We didn't mention one model though, the new E63 AMG since Mercedes didn't release any information. Till today when Mercedes-Benz let loose the information and pictures of the new E63 AMG Sedan and Wagon. Outside, the E63 AMG sedan and wagon carry many of the changes seen on the new E-Class sedan and wagon. There is a set of full LED headlights, a twin-blade grille, 10-spoke, 19-inch titanium gray alloys, and what Mercedes-Benz calls 'A-Wing' air intakes under the bumpers. There's also a new S-Model which adds high-sheen rim…

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class (Geländewagen) has somehow become the brand's Frankenstein. What we mean is the SUV has been part of a number of crazy projects. A key example is the G63 AMG 6x6 which brought together a turbo V8 and a number of off-road tweaks to make it a complete monster. The latest creation is the G500 4x4² (4x4 squared) which takes some of the hardware found in the 6x6 (portal axles) and a lifted suspension, and places it into a standard G550. Mercedes says the G500 4x4² offers 17.7 inches of ground clearance (the standard G550 only offers 8.1 inches of ground clearance) and can ford up to 39.3 inches of water. At the moment, Mercedes sells the G500 4x4²…

The days of high-performance V12s sitting under the hood of AMG models is coming to an end. Speaking with Automotive News at the New York Auto Show, Mercedes-AMG CEO Tobias Moers said the brand would stop selling V12 models once it phases out the 65 line that uses them. "There is still demand for a V-12, but if you move forward with a V-12 in the future, the investment will be too high, in my perspective. You have to increase power, and you have to move forward with the technology in that engine. We'd better invest our money into electrified V-8 vehicles," said Moers. The current 6.0L V12 is still capable for future models explained Moers, but not for the h…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com February 9, 2012 Next year, Daimler will close the door on their ultra luxury brand, Maybach. The brand which has existed for seven years, only sold about 3,000 vehicles. Now, Car reports that each of those 3,000 vehicles cost Daimler somewhere around $500,000. Even though the base 57 cost around $370,000, Maybach couldn't quite make up the astronomical $1.33 billion Daimler put in it since its (re)inception. Last year, rumors flowed around a deal between Daimler and Aston Martin that would have resulted in a range of new models, but the deal fell through and Maybach is being shown the door. Wagons are a rare species in the U.S. A high-performance wagon for the U.S. falls into the unicorn category. But Mercedes-Benz has been the one to carry the torch with the E55 and E63 wagons. Once again, Mercedes has gifted the U.S. with another high-performance wagon in the form of the E63 S. It follows the same recipe as the E63 S sedan; biturbo 4.0L V8 producing 603 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque; nine-speed automatic, and a performance-oriented version of Mercedes' 4Matic all-wheel drive system with drift mode. The wagon is slower than the sedan to 60 mph - 3.4 seconds vs. 3.3 seconds. Top speed is limited to 180 mph. The E63 S wagon mim…

So the question for this introduction at the Detroit Autoshow: Is it worth it? Does it make sense to have an auto that has so limited electric range as a plug-in even though with generator you can say you average 134.5 MPG? The best part of this is it makes the Chevy VOLT a Bargain that is superior to this MB. What are your thoughts? Would you spend money on this car?

Smart has released some design pics of the For-Us concept. The For-Us concept is a pickup truck for the urban market. Based on the Smart ForTwo convertible, the For-Us is three feet longer and six inches taller than the regular ForTwo. With the extra space, Smart has added a truck bed that provides 35.4 inches of load space. The tailgate is controlled electronically to either be raised or lower. Mercedes-Benz has been selling an electric vehicle - the B-Class Electric Drive - in the U.S. since December 2013. But you have likely not seen on. Mercedes has only sold 3,651 B-Classes, mostly in states that follow zero-emission vehicle mandates such as California. Now, Mercedes-Benz has made the decision to drop the B-Class Electric Drive. Mercedes-Benz USA spokesman Rob Moran confirmed the news to Automotive News, saying production of the Electric Drive would be phased out in the next quarter. Part of the reason for the vehicle being dropped is Mercedes putting more focus on their upcoming EQ lineup of electric vehicles. "Due to our strategic focus on [conne…

Back in November, we first learned about Mercedes-AMG's next standalone model possibly known as the GT4, a four-door coupe. The new model would be previewed by a concept before going on sale in 2019. We now have some new details on this model. Autocar reports the GT4 concept will be shown next month at the Geneva Motor Show to celebrate the 50th anniversary of AMG. A production model will soon follow a year later for European markets. The GT4 will serve as the replacement for the CLS Shooting Brake and use a modified version of Mercedes' modular rear architecture (MRA). William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com February 2, 2012 Automakers go to great lengths to camoflaging upcoming vehicles and spy photographers do the same to capture images of those vehicles. TCC Test: 2007 Mercedes-Benz E320 Bluetec It's no secret that most Americans are less than fond of diesels. Past U.S.-market diesels have been clattery, smoky and painfully slow compared to gas-powered counterparts, and U.S. diesel fuel has been sticky, stinky, harder to find and little (if any) cheaper than gasoline. Unless they've traveled to Europe lately, where quicker, quieter and nearly smokeless modern diesels have become more popular than gas burners due to their higher fuel economy and lower fuel taxes, they've had little reason to change that opinion. Until now. Read "2007 Mercedes-Benz E320 Bluetec: The world’s cleanest diesel, Benz promises" @ The Car Conn…

One of the stories we didn't get the chance to cover on Cheers & Gears last week was Mercedes-Benz building a midsize pickup. Now at the time, we considered this an early April Fools joke. But when the official announcement came out, our jaws were agape: Mercedes-Benz is working on a midsize truck that will go on sale towards the end of the decade for certain marketplaces - the U.S. is not one of those places. Now this wouldn't be a luxury truck, it would be built for work. This further substantiated by Mercedes-Benz's commercial van division handling the development. But Mercedes-Benz USA wants to make the final decision if the truck is sold or not. "We said to Stu…

A new report from Autocar says that Mercedes-AMG is proposing a new entry-level sports car to take on the Porsche 718 Boxster and Cayman. Mercedes-Benz has finally revealed the new A-Class hatchback at an event in Amsterdam on Friday. While the U.S. will miss out on the hatchback, it does give us a preview of what to expect with the upcoming A-Class sedan, due sometime later this year. Details to be called out include a hood that slopes down further than the previous generation, sharply angled headlights, and a wider rear end. Mercedes claims the A-Class is the most aerodynamic model in the class, with a drag coefficient of just 0.25. The interior is quite the departu…

It is no secret that automakers will go to extreme lengths to analyze a competitor's vehicle. For example, Daimler was accused by a couple last year of renting their privately owned Tesla Model X to dismantle and preform various tests. German automakers are currently working on competitors to take on Tesla Model S. Case in point is Mercedes-Benz. William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com April 18, 2012 For the longest time, we been reporting about a small, FWD sedan from Mercedes-Benz that would look like a CLS that has been run through the dryer a bit too long. Well, thanks to Autoblog.rs, we have gotten our first look at the "baby CLS" in its concept form. The Concept Style Coupe (CSC) as its called shares the same design ideas as the larger CLS mixed with some cues from the F800 concept from 2010. Mercedes-Benz's new MFA platform, which debuted on the new A-Class, is underpinning the CSC. The CSC will make its world debut at next week's Beijing motor show. Source: Autoblog.rs View full arti…

News Mercedes cancels by-wire brake system; decision a blow to technology's future JENS MEINERS | Automotive News Europe Posted Date: 12/8/05 Mercedes-Benz is discontinuing the twice-recalled Robert Bosch GmbH braking system on the E-Class and CLS-Class sedans next summer in a move that is a blow to automotive brake-by-wire technology. Mercedes will drop the Sensotronic Brake Control system from the E-Class in June 2006 when it introduces the car's midterm face-lift. At about the same time, the E Class-derived CLS also will lose the system. Both cars will have a conventional hydraulic braking system. "We can now offer all the comforts of SBC in a convention…

Mercedes-Benz has finally revealed that it is not planning to sell any more diesel-powered vehicles in the U.S. Speaking with The Detroit Bureau, Mercedes' head of R&D Ola Kallenius said there isn't enough demand for diesels with the three-pointed star - citing they only made up three percent of total sales in their best year. A lot of the decrease can be laid at the Volkswagen diesel emission scandal. “The diesel doesn’t fit into our portfolio in the U.S.,” said Kallenius. There will be one group of Mercedes-Benz models that will be keeping diesel engines, the Sprinter vans. Sales of these models are continuing to rise. Source: The Detroit Bureau …

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com April 17, 2012 The usual recipe for an AMG vehicle is to take one Mercedes-Benz vehicle, add gobs of horsepower via turbocharging, tune the suspension and brakes, add new body bits and wheels, and then do a smoky burnout out of the factory. However, the rumored A-Class AMG model will be changing the recipe a bit because it's a front-wheel drive model. Some new spy shots of an AMG A-Class mule running around AMG's HQ in Germany came out and gives us a good look of what to expect of this hot hatch. The A25 AMG as its rumored to be called will sport new bumpers and more aggressive side skirts. Up front, a new grill and …

Mercedes-Benz will be launching the E-Class All-Terrain wagon in Europe to take on the likes of the Audi A6 Allroad and Volvo V90 Cross Country. But Mercedes might bring the All-Terrain to the U.S. "We're still debating that and thinking about it. It's a very, very exciting vehicle, and we're taking a look at overall production, volumes that we have to have and business case and so on. So we'll see. Decision not finally made," said Mercedes-Benz USA CEO Dietmar Exler. Mercedes already announced that the regular E-Class wagon would be coming to the U.S. early next year, so trying to build up a case for bringing the All-Terrain becomes slightly easier. Also, a num…

"We will not only have all-wheel-drive in the SUVs and the compact cars, we will also have that in the performance sedans," said Friedrich Eichlers, AMG's of engines and powertrains. The reasoning with going towards AWD is due to the amount of power the current crop of AMG vehicles is overwhelming the rear wheels. "If you want to be a member of the club with cars that have 0-100km/h times of around 3.0 seconds, then you need to have all-wheel-drive for your sports cars. Mercedes-Benz has released information on the new 2023 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300. While the GLC is all new, the most newsworthy change is under the hood where the turbocharged 2.0 liter, 4-cylinder gains the assistance of a 48 volt electric motor-generator mild-hybrid. The gas engine makes 258 horsepower, up 3 from the prior year, and 295 lb-ft of torque, up 22, however that torque peak is available in a narrower band of 2000 rpm - 3200 rpm compared to the 1800 rpm - 4000 rpm of the outgoing version. The combined system more than makes up for the narrower torque band with a boost from the electric motor of 23 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque. Most of the electric boost is…

That is unless you can lower the car's top at the touch of a button and enjoy it all the more, like we did in the 2007 Mercedes-Benz CLK63 AMG. The new 6.2-liter engine, designed from scratch by the powerhouse AMG division of Mercedes-Benz, features a wildly "oversquare" design; that is, the diameter of the cylinder bores (102.2mm) is larger than the stroke (94.6mm) of the pistons. In other words, you can almost distinguish each discrete explosion as the high-compression (11.3:1) engine bellows through the free-flow dual-tipped exhaust. For ge…
