Bitchin' article that tells whiny parents to STFU and actually parent. Video games aren't the devil. --- Reality Bytes: Eight Myths About Video Games Debunked Henry Jenkins MIT Professor A large gap exists between the public's perception of video games and what the research actually shows. The following is an attempt to separate fact from fiction. 1. The availability of video games has led to an epidemic of youth violence. According to federal crime statistics, the rate of juvenile violent crime in the United States is at a 30-year low. Researchers find that people serving time for violent crimes typically consume less media before commi…

I don't know if it's on their website, but I just saw this video on CNN Headline News...a motorist that had been pulled over and ticketed for speeding put his Camry in reverse and backed up over the hood and into the windshield of a Crown Vic PI. All captured on video by the in-car camera in the police car...pretty funny.

Reuters March 17, 2008 - 6:25 am ET NEW DELHI (Reuters) -- General Motors wants to launch a second small car in India in the next two years as it looks to capitalize on growth in emerging markets to offset any sluggishness in U.S. sales, a senior company official said. The model will not compete directly with Tata Motors' low-cost Nano but will be cheaper than GM's current lowest priced car in India, David Reilly, GM group vice-president, told a news conference on Monday. Small cars less make up nearly three-quarters of India's market. GM offers the Chevrolet Spark in the sector for about 300,000 rupees ($7,350). "We need some thing lower than what we have got…

I would have loved to take part in GM's 4th of July "0% for 72 Hours" sale event, but I was dealing with a more important issue (my dad's health). I honestly thought that the % for 72 months offer would have been extended after July 4 (like last year), but it wasn't. The current deal of 0% for 60 months is good and all, but I could benefit from the extra 12 month offer. Does anyone know how well GM sales are right now? I could patiently wait another 9-10 days until August rolls around if it means added incentives are given to teh buying public. Your input is appreciated.

OK, so I admit, I am cheap in regards to this one.... Since AOL and now GeoCities has gonged free web space... where to get free web space now? I cant see paying to host my diecast web-site, so that I can access it from my phone in the toy aisle at Target.

It's snowing out. Who wants to kidnapp me and take me someplace warm... and without snow? I don't take up much space and I'm not afraid of small places. Just give me enough room to be able to lay down fully... something comfy to lay on (I bet it'll be more comfy than my own bed, so just anything)... and some privacy. Okay? Who's up for it? I'm serious.

I kinda happened across this old issue of C&D while I was cleaning some stuff. There are some real gems in here. The cover car is the Plymouth Pronto Spyder, which wasn't a bad looking concept car, kind of the Solstice concept before there was a Solstice concept, a lot of the part for the concept were plucked from existing Chryslers, mainly the Neon. The Upfront page is all about the 1999 Oldsmobile Alero, which they didn't give driving impressions on, later in the issue they test the 1999 Pontiac Grand Am and didn't bitch about the styling or interior. Other tests include the 1999 Mercury Cougar, the Dodge Ram 1500 SS/T which they called "The last of the perfo…

What we need now is one of these. Why it didn't go into production, I have no idea. It should have. Recently, at a open house at the GM Heritage Center, this little puppy showed up, fresh from a rebuild. Twin cam Cosworth engine, much like an early ecotech. 5 speed, bad ass look I think...cowl hood. F- body styling, some crappy vega parts, but sort of an early kind of Solstice/Sky feel to it...pics don't do it justice! This design was a result of the energy CrIsiS in the 70s, but the style of this unit speaks to me. Needs cool wheels and tires but otherwise excellent! I would imagine some amazing mpg with such a wedge to cut thru the air. I feel like buildin…

So I'm reading the new article on DCX's minivans and I came cross this. But the truth is, the most important thing about the 2008 Chrysler minivans, which are to be unveiled at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show, is that they exist at all. The two other more-or-less domestic companies that have produced minivans in the past, General Motors and Ford, have both announced they're ceding the segment to the Japanese, the Koreans and, of course, Chrysler. So I suppose Toyota is more or less American too now right?

ocn's vacation, day 1: So, one or two of you may recall a thread on my first service visit with my Fiesta. It was to get a second key programmed for the car. That key was incorrectly cut by someone at Ford, so round two was necessary. This morning was round two. I got to the dealership at 7:50 for my 8:00 appointment for something that should take about 3 minutes. At about 8:40 I started doing the bad customer thing... I started walking around outside the shop, looking for my car. Found it. Tech was in his bay, at a desk on a laptop, looking up info on how to do the programming. He was stumped. I walked in and introduced myself as the car owner. He said the key…

The other day at lunch, went out, sitting by myself...next table, Toyota tech and a Honda tech were eating lunch, from nearby dealerships. both of them spent the whole time pretty much talking about how crappy American and European cars are, and how much better simply EVERYTHING from Asia is. I am to the point where I think just the reverse, that while Asia builds some fine cars...esp Mazda and Hyundai....I am really liking American cars again and really actually want to buy a European car., So could I just have any love that anyone will offer up for American or European iron...please...just a little...?

Yep, I'm going up to Chicago tomorrow for the auto show (first public day so it might be busy). Any requests anyone has for pics? I'll be sure to get plenty of the new stuff, but if there's something specific you want post it here ASAP, as I'm leaving before noon CST tomorrow. I'll be there Saturday as well, but I probably won't have access to the internet, so I likely won't see any requests posted after I leave.

So yesterday, the day after my birthday and the day there's supposed to be a party with my friends started fine. I got up early for once, took a shower, and got ready to go to my only class on Fridays (which is only 50 minutes long). I get in the Intrepid with my new mp3 player, plug it in and off I go. Only about a mile from the house the Check Engine light comes on. I pull over immediately into the parking lot of a new apartment building that just went up. And turn the car off. The engine temp was reading normal, the oil levels were fine, and no ominous smoke or sounds were emitting from the engine bay. I reluctantly start the car back up, listen to it...and it sounds f…

Stopped off at the gym this morning. Was on treadmill for 25 minutes, felt good, got off and went in for a shower. Found my lock busted on the locker, twisted so I couldn't open it. Got an employee to cut the lock the rest of the way off, but the latch on the locker was also broken. After using a screwdriver to open the busted latch, I went through my stuff to find all my cash missing from my wallet, but everything else intact. The shift manager called the local police. In the meantime, I had to call and cancel my two credit cards and, to be safe, order a new bank card. After the officer interviewed me, two other customers walked over and told me of similar events …

I've been to many car shows and I can usually find something to appreciate in any of them. This show, however, quickly has become one of my favorites. Walking around the Hershey Hotel, you see so many great cars that you could not find gathered in many places in the world...let alone, in Pennsylvania. If you love classic cars, this show should be on your schedule for next year. It's gathered such a reputation that organizers from some of the more established shows have made it a point to visit this one. http://automotivetraveler.com/jump/4185

Well, we survived another year. As 2013 comes to a close, the entire automobile industry is doing well while the rest of the economy plods along in the jobless recovery. In politics, the bickering two parties continue to bring shame on themselves in petty upmanship, with the losers being the American public. The Tea Party made a mockery of itself as the country waited weeks for the federal government shutdown to end, and the President’s signature legislation, the Affordable Care Act, struggled in its implementation. Edward Snowden, working as a contract worker for the National Security Agency, spilled the beans on what many would say is overreach in the U.S. government …

As some of you may already know, I'm looking to replace the stock 16" six-spoke rims on my IS300 (which aren't in the best shape to begin with) with the more attractive (but still stock) 17" five spoke rims. The replacements in question come in silver, graphite, and chrome finishes. I'm interested in the latter two (the graphite finish in particular looks great with my car's color, charcoal grey). I've always loved the look of the five-spoke IS300 rims, which became standard in '02 (mine's an '01 <_<), as they fit the car perfectly. My question is whether you guys think it'd be worth spending money on rims that'…

Did anyone else see it? It was just on CBS. Basically, the Robot goes and gets a bunch of jobs still (this time there are more - it stocks shelves and does a couple more new things), and then at the end it "walks" to the junkyard and sees a big crane putting an old car on top of the scrap heap, and then wakes up. I guess this time they're showing dead cars instead of a robot dying. Hopefully there aren't any complaints this time

man was washed up on a beach after a terrible shipwreck. Only a sheep and a sheepdog were washed up with him. After looking around, he realized that they were stranded on a deserted island. After being there awhile, he got into the habit of taking his two animal companions to the beach every evening to watch the sunset. One particular evening, the sky was a fiery red with beautiful cirrus clouds, the breeze was warm and gentle - a perfect night for romance. As they sat there, the sheep started looking better and better to the lonely man. Soon, he leaned over to the sheep and put his arm around it. But the sheepdog, ever protective of the sheep, growled fiercel…

DETROIT - Detroit’s automakers went out with a whimper in 2007, as a lackluster December failed to pull the industry out of the lowest U.S. auto sales slump in nearly a decade. Ford Motor Co. was knocked from its perch as the No. 2 U.S. auto seller, a position it held since 1931, while General Motors appeared likely to lose its title of the largest automaker in the world. Both were dethroned by the juggernaut that is Toyota. Toyota Motor Corp. sold 2.62 million cars and trucks in the U.S. in 2007, which amounted to 48,226 more than Ford, according to sales figures released Thursday. Toyota’s sales were up 3 percent for the year, buoyed by new products such as the Toyo…

Mazda showed a hydrogen-powered rotary engine in the RX-8 last fall at the Tokyo Motor Show, and the company, in fact, has been working on such engines for nearly 20 years. The two recent test cars were leased to Idemitsu Kosan in Tokyo and Iwatani International in Osaka, both participants in the government-sanctioned Japan Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Demonstration Project. Some of you may have noticed a series of small changes being made around here. For every one small change you see, there are 10 more that you can't see that only really apply to how the search engines see the site. This is part of a concentrated effort on my part to raise the visibility of CheersandGears.com in the eyes of the search engines. This is a learning process for me, but since diving into this on January 1, we've seen some slight movement in the right direction. I am expending this effort and money for two reasons: First, we've been turned down by some manufacturers for being too small and not having enough unique visitors per month. There are multiple ratin…

I had posted earlier this month about the possibility of buying a honda, specifically a 76 CB750. well, last week i found what i had my heart set on to begin with that fit the budget. a guy 45 mins up the road was selling his 2006 triumph bonneville. its got some blemishes, but he has done modifications to it that i was going to do if i bought a new one later on this year. Its been about 8 years since i had ridden a motorcycle, and this is my first street bike, but the short ride up the street and back felt amazing.

So, while looking for crossover leases for my boss, and researching dealer incentives on Edmunds, I decided to see what the SRX had to offer (its probably more than what he wants to spend but I thought maybe there were some good leases...). Anyways, right now there's a $2024 GM to dealer incentive for premium lux V6 models, $900 GM to dealer for AWD on V6 models, and $900 GM to dealer for the rear seat. Before today when the $3000 GM to customer incentive came out, there was also a $2000 GM to dealer incentive for any model SRX (at least V6). There's an SRX that has these options plus the 18" wheel and tire package and white diamond paint at my local dealership right now …

As home prices continue to decline and loan defaults mount, federal regulators are bracing for dozens of American banks to fail over the next year. But after a large mortgage lender in California collapsed late Friday, Wall Street analysts began posing two crucial questions: Just how many banks might falter? And, more urgently, which one could be next? The nation’s banks are in far less danger than they were in the late 1980s and early 1990s, when more than 1,000 federally insured institutions went under during the savings-and-loan crisis. The debacle, the greatest collapse of American financial institutions since the Depression, prompted a government bailout that cos…

An unnamed Lexus executive reportedly told a GM-oriented blog that the next-generation Lexus ES sedan will make the Buick LaCrosse a “laughable” luxury car. The executive was quoted by GMAuthority.com, which says it was able to glean a little information about the next-generation luxury sedan. Expected to bow later this year to replace the aging 2012 Lexus ES (which first debuted for 2007), the new car will reportedly be wider and longer than the current model in an effort to better compete against rivals like the LaCrosse and Acura TL . In addition, the executive said that the LaCrosse won’t be able to “hold a candle to” the ES’ interior quietness. Buick ’s “Quiet Tun…

Happy birthday to "I Hope GM Rules Again" and "Tbass." I've actually met "GM Rules" - Steve - while on vacation in Quebec and he has a cool car and is a very cool guy. He even got some previous Olds brochures for me that I had misplaced over the years -- they sit on my coffee table! So, I'll start the thread and hope you have a great birthday!

So here's another "checking in" post after 3 and a half years away. I find it difficult to stay interested enough to keep up with social media these days so excuse the absence. I'll try to keep this one short and sweet. I can't quite remember, but I believe my last update came when I was still in Michigan. Anyways, as I alluded to in that post, I ended up relocating to Charleston, SC after exhausting my options around Detroit. For work, I've now completely switched industries, transitioning into home energy. It pays the bills, so I can't complain about that. Once again, though, I might be looking for yet another destination to call home in the next year or so. The So…

MOMBASA, Kenya -- U.S. Navy snipers opened fire and killed three pirates holding an American captain at gunpoint, delivering the skipper unharmed and ending a five-day high-seas hostage drama on Easter Sunday. Capt. Richard Phillips was in "imminent danger" of being killed before snipers shot the pirates in an operation authorized by President Barack Obama, Vice Adm. Bill Gortney said. He said the pirates were armed with AK-47s and small-caliber pistols and were pointing the rifles at the captain when the commander of the nearby USS Bainbridge gave the order to open fire. Gortney, the commander of U.S. Naval Forces Central Command, said the White House had given "ve…

Such an amazing driver. Those F1 cars looked like beasts to handle. No traction control, abs, power steering, manual gearbox. You have to fight it to keep it under control. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rh6bwZ4ooTI

As you've most likely heard, the Prez is presenting a deal to have the government of the United Arab Emirates take control of major ports on the east coast. Do you think that Dubya has finally "lost" it? I can't believe this is actually happening. He even said....and I quote...."if Britain can operate our ports, how are they different from the U.A.E.?" How can you compare Great Britain to ANY middle-eastern country? In my opinion, G.B. is as close to sainthood as you can get when talking about U.S. allies.... I don't intend to get into a huge political debate here.....but IMHO, to give ANY middle-eastern country access to major ports in the U.S. is taking a c…

I work in a medium sized architectural firm and, in addition to our local drive, we download other stuff (such as our drawings and such) from a server. I also have a flash drive or thumb drive that I use up at the university at night and on weekends when I do crap for my night classes. Thus far, I have never had problems with a file on my flash drive. Interestingly enough, I got a message on the flash drive while at work, after a crash, that said "Volume is dirty." (Now, I do insert my flash drive, carried on my key ring, into my work computer to work on papers during breaks and on my lunch hour.) Lately, my computer has been crashing anywhere from 1 to 3 times a…

TACOMA, Wash. - A Thai immigrant convicted of incest led investigators to the body of a 12-year-old girl who had been missing since the Fourth of July, and is expected to be charged in her death, authorities said Friday. Police are also trying to determine whether Terapon Adhahn, 42, is connected to other missing child cases that date back to 1986. Zina Linnik, abducted during a neighborhood fireworks display, died from "homicidal violence," said Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum and the Pierce County medical examiner's office. Her body was found in a rural wooded area after information from Adhahn's lawyer led police and FBI agents there, authorities said. Adh…

I found this Park Avenue Ultra on ebay. Clicky. This is the first I've seen of one outfitted like this. According the ad... "This Buick was a level 3 engineer's car at Buick. The custom additions are all from Buick. That includes 2 way auto sunroof, Custom fiberglass skirts all the way around the car, Two tone leather seats, two tone interior, custom rear sport seats with lumber support. Full console with Buick emblem embedded in it. Buick emblem on hood is embedded in hood." I'm quite curious about it. Something like this rarely gets past me, but this one did until now. Does anyone know anything about it?

I drove here from Houston in the new Vue. Took two 12 hour days to get here but it was worth seeing some fall foliage. I'm heading back through Kentucky and then down through Atlanta over the next 2 days (to visit more family). Lots of GM's up in this area, kind of interesting to see. The Vue is running great - but I can only get the heater to work if I turn it all the way to 85 - cold air otherwise. Very weird. Anywho...I knocked off 2 more elusive states on the way (Missouri and Indiana) - I have 9 more to go and I've been to all 50. Nothing like Neil Young during an autumn Missouri sunset on I-55 heading into Illinois.
