I'm starting my grad engineering design project this term, and I'm meeting up with my group to finalize the topic, and submit to a consultant for approval. But right now, we need ideas. We're focusing out topic on in-car entertainment Any ideas? Say, what would be great to have in the car audio/video system? Thanks for any input in advance!

Well, I'm on a job site (I work for the contracting company my father works for now, by the way. No more fueling planes) and I parked in a space reserved for BAY MONT BANK CUSTOMERS ONLY. They have 9 spaces 'reserved', 7 of them empty, while the rest of the lot - minus the disabled ones - is full. So, its either park in one of those spots like myself and all the subcontractors normally do or park on the fifth floor 'visitors' section of the parking structure a about 1/5-mile away. I know two of the security guys; one's nice, the other thinks he's Jack Webb or somebody with actual importance. So, I get a ticket from Depty Dufus for 'unautho…

Bought this for $15 from my wife's aunt. Her son used to drag race a '60s El Camino at the local strip. Having done numerous upgrades, motor swaps & other sundries in the backyard garage in the '70-80s, undoubtedly this vice came in handy. As the son hasn't lived in his mom's house for a few decades and no longer wrenches on cars, I thought I'd rescue it. Columbian 604-M2 machinist's vise. Disassembled, de-greased/de-rusted, stripped 5 coats of paint off (red, silver, blue, orange, black), deburred, painted 2 coats of Rustoleum (could maybe use another, but it's a vise), greased & reassembled. Works real nice, pretty heavy construction. Luckily for a guy trying …

Just wanted to let you all know that I won't be around for the next 3 days as I am taking the family on a mini-vacation to visit our nation's capital - Washington, DC. Two years ago we made this trek during the spring break and enjoyed it so much that we've been wanting to go back since. We took good old Amtrak back in 2007, but this time we'll be driving down in the AURA. Of course the weather isn't suppose to be so great on Tuesday and Wednesday, but we'll make the most of it (our plans include visiting a lot of museums these two days). Should be back late Wednesday and will likely post again on Thursday (I'll need a day to recouperate before heading to NYC on Frida…

Dutch Mandel--GM Next: Why it will be around for the coming century By DUTCH MANDEL As General Motors looks toward its centennial celebration in September, today might go down in its history as the moment when its corporate life was saved. That's because its much-maligned chairman, Rick Wagoner, announced massive triage measures aimed at keeping the patient alive. His message should resonate from Wall Street to Main Street. Wagoner and his creditable management team--led by no-nonsense COO Fritz Henderson--addressed all areas of the business. Yes, GM made some "easy" calls. It will hasten to shutter plants it targeted earlier in the year for closure; those facil…

In checking another forum, a poster is bemoaning the fact that many new GM products are being, and will continue to be, engineered in places other than America for the U.S. market. Which brings back to memory a recent Lutz statement, who, in so many words said that we wouldn't even recognize GM in 10 years - that, in time, they will once again become the powerhouse that they once were. This begs the question: With GM promoting products that start off as designs for other markets, in other words, as GM cars become fully globalized, thereby ignoring the specific needs of the U.S. consumer, and the U.S. worker, is GM's resurrection worth the price of it's resurrection?…

* Hard to believe the 2012 Monte Carlo Nationals in Johnson City TN were a WEEK ago already (&, for that matter, a year ago, I was nearing the end of my 9,000+ mile road trip). I had an awesome time last week/weekend! I'm glad I accepted Rob's generous offer to drive me back'n'forth; it was great to get away. Believe it or not, I only took 2 pictures (see below). I'm not sure why I didn't take more DURING the drives; maybe because I was enjoying the scenery too much. I didn't take more pictures AT the MC Nats because it was TOO hot to stand in the sun long enough to take pictures. Besides, others took pictures of the event. Award winners: http://www.montecarl…

How about a chop of the year? Anybody who wants to can submit a photo of their best chop of THIS YEAR ONLY! It can be any car photoshop, even if it was not posted here on C&G. Then, after a deadline, we vote! The winner could be posted on the homepage if wanted. Now, nobody should make fun of other's chops they think are good (if they submit.) I have been through plenty of tough criticism and rude comments, and here is where it is especialy unwanted. Any crude or inappropriate comments should not be posted here. Deadline would be January 5, 2007, but since it is the holidays, extensions will gladly be given.

Today was my parents' 23rd anniversary so they went out to have a nice day for themselves. Since the HHR has continued to develop more mysterious unhealthy noises, they had been thinking about potential replacements, with a Focus hatchback high on the list. So during their driving about they stopped at a Ford dealer just to look around. The dealer had no Focii in stock and did not know when they would get any more, so my parents test drove a couple others, an Escape and an Edge. Long story short, they promptly traded the HHR for a black 2012 Ford Escape.

So this isn't a Dream Garage thread or anything, but in keeping in spirits with it being Halloween, post up some of your favorite cars that you think pair nicely with this kinda-sorta-holiday. Maybe you think they just have a sinister, dark look or demeanor to them. Maybe they were offered in color schemes that befit the occassion. Whatever the reason, post 'em up!! I'll start. I always thought the LF-A kinda looked like an angry jack-o-lantern. Which I totally love. It's one of all-time favorite cars. Not to mention that V10 banshee wail!

Worst part is that its not up for renewal again until 2012, so I'm going to have to "lose" it sometime in the next couple of years to get another one. Also part of my License bureau trip was legalizing the Fusion. Turns out I never paid my 2005 personal property tax (ono the Saturn, this year I pay on the…

when will the "other guys" start using this standard for engine ratings, and do you think that it would have any effect on what buyers would look for....an SAE rated car vs. and non SAE rated car? one more condition on that, since GM is the only one doing it, (right now, right?) how will it effect things after a few more brands use this standard. one way this could be usefull is if you the powercurves on the performance models and over lay them with the competitions power curves. this make sense? sorry if it doesn't.

It seems like you can't see your own doctor anymore. The last 2 doctors I've had both used their physician's assistants extensively. What a pain in the ass. Both of the doctors had not-so-great P.A.s - at the first doctor about 4 years ago, I had to battle to get the antibiotics I needed for a laceration that had gone south because she was too busy concentrating on blood pressure (which reads normal when not at the doctor). The second doctor had a P.A. who screwed up some prescriptions. You have to SPECIFICALLY make an appointment to see your MD because nowadays they use their P.A.s for more routine stuff. Just took my Mom to the doctor she has had for at least …

Last year, I posed these queries: What do YOU consider to be "should see" areas/places in your home state? What would you tell travelers to check out, if they have the time, as they drive through your state? What "obscure" and "out of the way" places in your home state come to mind? In August, I posted the answers received. Since then, I've received additional suggestions. Below is the newest compilation of answers ... which may prove that you find another part of yourself in every state. This is not a "complete" list and may not be 100% accurate; however, it is an excellent start to planning a vacation or road trip...ENJOY! ALABAMA Battleship Alabama Huntsville…

It had to be a late model last-gen car because it had the polished, non-5 spoke rims on it. It really hit home for me, seeing this car, that Pontiac should have offered a six cylinder alternative available on the GTO body shell, called it a LeMans or Tempest, and watched the sales come in much better than the $32k V8 Goat. I firmly believe that a six cylinder model would have ensured the GTO's success, and there would have been no question there'd be a modern gen II car.

I have no plans to arrange any 2010 gatherings; however, several people have asked me if any are in the works and why no announcements have been made. Thus...: 1 ... What draws your interest in a gathering? 2 ... What keeps your interest in a gathering for you to attend as planned? 3 ... Are you interested in a MidSummer Chitown gathering in Elgin IL, July TwentyTen? Depending on the responses, I may arrange a July 24 (or 31) gathering, in Elgin IL, for MULTIPLE boards (car- and heart-related, etc.), starting at 11a with a short drive ... and lasting into the evening. Recent gatherings.... MARCH 2008 ~10 people attended a gathering of 2 heart-related groups at a S…

My Acadia has the power tailgate, which I love for when I have three 150+ lbs dogs on leashes and need to load them into the back. Today, I was arranging boxes of stuff in the rear cargo area with the tailgate open. My daughter had the other set of keys and thought it would be funny to close the tailgate on dear old Dad. I was listening to my iPod at the time and did not hear the audible warning that the tailgate was closing. I only realized it was closing when I felt it hit by rear end, stop, and then raise back up. Thank goodness for that safety feature, or I would have been gobbled up like one of those little balls in a Hungry Hungry Hippos mouth. Let the prank …

Post you idea of the end of the world vehicle, what you will use, what will you add to it. Is it Mad Max type truck or a muscle car like in "I am legend".

I walked out the other night to the street and as I turned around to go back in, I had a thought to take a picture. I am guessing, I probably need a real camera to accurately capture the DRLs... Too many bright light sources for the poor phone camera.

Hey, guess what? (Bear with me here) Yep, my brain has stopped again worse than ever before! So please tell me since I can't find out where under "My Controls" to change my user/i.d name. Do I have to re-register or is it just right in front of me?

Okay experts, I need some advice for a senior student who is about to get their driver's license and came to me for advice on purchasing a used car. They are looking at a local small-time (very small I should say, they have 10 cars in their inventory) used-car dealership's inventory of two used Saturn vehicles: 1998 SL2 Sedan: Info: 4-cyl, auto, ps, pb, air, 120,435 miles, VIN WZ258740 - $2,699 1995 SL2 Sedan: Info: 4-cyl, auto, ps, pb, air, 96,205 miles, VIN SZ354921 - $2,699 Which of the two cars would you advise them to seriously look into purchasing? The student wants a Saturn, as they have friends that own Saturn cars and they're very satisfied ow…

Citing inside sources,Bloomberg reports that Chrysler and Nissan are in talks to develop Cars,Trucks and Engines together.Chrysler and Nissan, however, are reportedly not considering acquiring any type of ownership in each other. The co-development would be limited to truck development for Nissan, small car development for Chrysler and joint development of new engines. Nissan is likely hoping that taping into a U.S automaker's expertise on full-size trucks will lead to changes that make its Titan pickup more competitive. Chrysler, meanwhile,is still without a car small than the Caliber and could benefit from Nissan's experience selling cars in Japan and Europe.More at the li…

My city has recently purchased a mobile speed vehicle that will remotely radar speeders without having an officer sitting in. They interviewed an officer on the local news station, but were not allowed to disclose the vehicle. The only clues are the screen captures below...it appears to be a red SUV or van. My first guess a Chevy Tahoe or Chevy Express. However, after comparing interiors, I'm not sure. Video: http://tinyurl.com/ylsal8k

It was weird NOT going to radio station WRMN this past Friday night to host CD Showcase (still looking for sponsors), but at least I wasn't "stuck at home". No, I didn't go on a road trip ... don't even have my older 4 MCs out for the season yet...arg. Instead, I watched my Dad's softball team win on their Opening Night, 12-11. After allowing 5 runs in the top of the 1st, Dad's team scored 2 in the bottom of the first and 5 in the bottom of the 2nd to grab a 7-5 lead. After the visiting team tied it at 7, Dad's team took back the lead, 8-7. But, a 3-run top of the 5th ... all with 2 out, nonetheless ... gave the other team a 10-8 lead. That didn't last long, with Da…

As the new CEO was taking over, he asked the former chief if he could give him any advice. The outgoing CEO said he would leave something useful in the top drawer of the desk. On his first Monday at the helm, the new CEO opened the top drawer. There was a note and 3 envelopes, numbered 1 through 3. The instructions were to open the envelopes in order as a crisis in business would arise. The new CEO shoved the note and envelopes to the back of the drawer. Things ran smoothly for 6 to 8 months but then, sure enough, something went haywire and the CEO didn't know what to do. The board of directors wanted answers. He thought, "What the heck." and opened the first envelope…

We love our 2003 Expedition EB but we are having to get it fixed all the time. Partly because the service department at Ford is terrible and they dont know what they are doing. For some reason, it is vibrating constantly and it stopped running today. Should we replace it? Is it worth to get a new vehicle? This Expedition has 80,000 kms on it.

Saudi Arabia Rejects Pakistani Diplomat Because of His Name Owing to an unfortunate matter of translation, Pakistani diplomat Akbar Zeb will not become the next Pakistani ambassador to Saudi Arabia. Mr Zeb's credentials are impressive: he is the former envoy to the United States , India , South Africa and Canada . But despite his impressive career, his name proved to be an immovable hurdle. When translated into Arabic, it means "Large penis". In a region that stresses modesty in public, this could not stand. Akbar is a customary Muslim name meaning "great", and while Zeb is not an uncommon Pakistani name, in Arabic it is a slang reference to the penis and…
