What I need for you all to do is take a huge f-ing . I don't know what has gotten into the membership (including a few of the mods) around here since I went on vacation but it appears that you've all gone on the rag. If you have issues with a post or a poster report the issue PRIVATELY! If one particular poster is bothering you use the ignore feature. Stop trolling and stop bashing each other.

Is the Cheers and Gears site or its hosting company being "protected" by OpenDNS? I ask because I keep getting a "Phishing Site Blocked" message... then a few minutes later, it clears. Its happening when I use TW Cable... but I doubt they are providing it, to the best of my knowledge. In fact, I don't use their DNS... I use my own DNS server I built myself at a remote co-location site. I also doubt that the local antivirus and tools or whatever is doing the blocking... I work in this industry... not a novice. Anyway, I thought I'd bring it up to see if anyone else is having this problem. I suspect that perhaps one of the ads is triggering this blockage... but it would…

For anyone who has ever considered donating money to C&G, we've set up a Paypal button on the front page. If you click on it, you'll be forwarded to a Paypal payment form with Josh's email address and the subject 'Donation for Cheers and Gears' pre-filled in. All you need to do is fill out the amount you'd like to donate. Of course, if you don't have a Paypal account, you'd need to create one, but that's really pretty painless to do. Of course, we're not trying to shake anyone down, but a couple of bucks here and there could help defray some of the costs of keeping C&G running. Josh pays for the hosting costs on his own, and does it out of love for the site, bec…

to post images on this site is not too hard, but if you were never told, you would never know Image hosting on imageshack first, open the imageshack site herehttp://www.imageshack.us/ it says browse, click there and find the file of the picture you would like to post then click host it and a list of URLs will appear, the bottom one is the direct link URL to the image, copy the direct link to the image and save it in a document on your computer so that you will not have to return posting an image from image shack onto c&g open the c&g website and create the reply or new topic window that you wish, at the top of the window for the actual t…

Eliminate the Politics section as it is, and then have a section for debate. Have a moderated, intelligent debate between two C and G members on a specific topic. We could have a Peanut gallery thread, but most of those tend to be useless. methinks a section where the general audience could "cross examine" the debaters with a limited # of questions (say a limit of 3 per member) would be better... Just my two cents.

Moderators need to curb their right to alter or delete posts. Within the last few months, Ninety Eight Regency posted one of his photo parades. I commented on the setting in one photo and said it "looked very Houston TX" (which is where he happens to be from...a metropolis of 4 or so million people). Ninety Eight provided us with some humor in the grandstanding exit/re-entry also exhibited by a few others on here so I get a kick out of such "self-importance." Many people comment on surroundings or backgrounds in people's posted photos. Being that I design buildings, this is reflexive to me. Yet the post was gone. One doesn't have to be a rocket scientist to figure ou…

Ever since C&G had its oil changed et al., I've noticed something about the post icons next to thread titles. The icons don't show which threads I've posted in anymore like they did before the maintenance (the folders are just solid, with no "arrow" in them). Will this be remedied, or will I just have to remember which threads I'm subscribed to?

Proton Shows Mitsubishi Lancer EVO X Lookalike Concept of Inspira with 240HP Turbo Engine FRIDAY, DECEMBER 03, 2010 The 2010 Kuala Lumpur International Motor Show at the Putra World Trade Centre in Malaysia saw local automaker and owner of Lotus, Proton, revealing a host of concept models including a sport prototype of the recently launched Inspira called the Jebat. Needless to say, it's clearly inspired from the Mitsubishi Lancer EVO X. As you may remember, the Inspira is a rebadged Mitsubishi Lancer sedan and is the result of an OEM collaboration between the Malaysian automaker and Mitsubishi Japan. However, we're not so sure if Mitsubishi had this in mind when it …

PSA resists merger, answers Marchionne with sales growth April 23, 2010 06:01 CET PARIS (Bloomberg) -- PSA/Peugeot-Citroen, the carmaker predicted by Fiat S.p.A. CEO Sergio Marchionne to be the next European candidate for an auto merger, has won more time to prove that it can go it alone. Marchionne announced Wednesday plans to separate carmaking from its industrial units such as trucks and construction equipment to facilitate future alliances, saying he has a “long list” of further candidates for partnerships. PSA CEO Philippe Varin says he plans to build on its looser industrial cooperation with the Japanese carmaker Mitsubishi Motor Corp. and similar pacts with Fiat…

Yes, Isuzu has announced that they will be leaving the United States light-vehicle market after 2008. Not that you might have noticed, of course, since their final two products are rebadged GMC models. Still, they did provide some cool stuff over the course of their stay with us. The Isuzu Impulse, for starters (either the original rear-drive version or the front-driver better known as the Geo Storm). Also the original Trooper, which may be lacking in design flair but has very good credentials as an off-road machine. And then there was the Amigo, as well as a very solid line of small pickup trucks (starting with the Chevy LUV and evolving from there), and Honda's firs…

Cars.com Interesting...it says that the new Avalon has "average" reliability, as does the RL and Odyssey. Nissan's not doing so hot either...the Titan, Armada, QX56, and Quest rank among the 48 least-reliable vehicles sold. Yeah, maybe for some of recently laid-to-rest models like the Cavalier and Windstar before Detroit began actively pursuing higher quality. Who says that still holds true today? Why is CR always so quick to jump on the domestics without even giving them a chance to prove themselves?

Report: Asian automakers closing in on 50% share of U.S. auto sales While it may come as no surprise that Asian car companies are constantly gaining market share in the U.S. market, the actual numbers are quite amazing. Ten years ago, companies like Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai and the rest accounted for a little more than one-quarter of total light-vehicle sales in the States. By 2005, that figure stood at 36.6 percent. By 2007? 41.9 percent. In 2009, Asian automakers sold a full 47.9 percent of the cars and light trucks we Americans bought. These numbers come from the latest report by Ward's Auto. Perhaps predictably, that same dispatch tells us that American automa…

Report: BMW, Mercedes experiment with upscale car-sharing by Zach Bowman (RSS feed) on Dec 29th 2010 at 6:39PM If you think that joining in on the car-sharing party means that you'll be stuck behind the wheel of a low-buck auto, prepare to be amazed. According to AutoWeek, both BMW and Mercedes-Benz are diving into the car-sharing world with programs designed to allow users to experience a slice of luxury without having to foot the hassles associated with car ownership. BMW on Demand will provide drivers with a 1 Series for as little as €16 per hour in Europe (around $21 USD/hr). Those wanting a little more room can opt for a 5 Series for the low price of €23/hr ($30/…

Report: Mahindra says it has terminated U.S. dealer agreement by Jonathon Ramsey (RSS feed) on Aug 28th, 2010 at 11:25AM Mahindra's four-year saga with Global Vehicles is taking so many turns, it should get a telenovela on Univision. When we recently posted that the Pik-Up finally received EPA certification, GV and its dealer network were excited and ready to go. However, commenters on that post noted a message on Mahindra's site indicating that the company's relationship with GV was kaput. Mahindra hasn't said a word since, but Global Vehicles and the dealers have let folks know that they aren't impressed and that they have no idea what Mahindra thinks it's doing. Gl…

Report: Renault-Nissan engines to power future Mercedes, Smart models by Noah Joseph (RSS feed) on Dec 8th 2010 at 3:58PM The door metaphorically adjoining the offices of Msr. Ghosn and Dr. Zetsche swings both ways. The two executives – heads of Daimler and the Renault-Nissan Alliance respectively – signed a deal that would see the two auto groups collaborating on future products. So far all the reports appear to be benefiting Nissan – including the latest on AMG engines in Infiniti Performance Line models – but the latest indicate a measure of reciprocation. According to the wire coming in from across the pond, the next generation of Mercedes-Benz A- and B-Class hat…

Report: Tata to go on Motown hiring binge by Chris Shunk (RSS feed) on Dec 6th 2010 at 8:28AM The state of Michigan has been especially hard-hit by the Great Recession, slow auto sales and the 2009 bankruptcies of General Motors and Chrysler, but there appears to be a bit of employment help on the way from an unlikely source. Tata Technologies is a supplier for several auto companies in North America. Tata is looking for designers, engineers and professionals with experience dealing with product lifecycle, and these aren't jobs that will be…

Lately, there have been a lot of reposts with debuts, and it is understandable but I think it can be prevented. Reposted topics simply add clutter to the forum and make it hard to navigate at times (and confusion occurs when there are multipul topics because people don't know which they've already posted in). As a result, I, along with other Admins, are going to make an effort to pin topics that we want the discussions to be in. If you find another story about a vehicle that has debuted and you think it is significantly different from what has already posted, please simply post a link to that story, but do not post the whole story in the thread as that requires excess sc…

Even though we have the "view new posts" option in the menu, I've found it over the years to be unreliable sometimes, as it can and will randomly clear out the most recent posts, so nothing shows up (like just now). What about if in addition to "view new posts" the site incorporated RSS, which is far more reliable? Just a thought.

Rumormill: Marussia bringing seven new models to Frankfurt by Noah Joseph (RSS feed) on Dec 27th 2010 at 11:01AM If you're going to make it in the exotic supercar business, it helps to have two things: a substantial lineup and an F1 team. The Ferrari case, first of all, goes without saying. McLaren has the latter covered, and is in the process of kicking the former into high gear. Spyker bought its own F1 team, and though it subsequently sold it, look at the Dutch automaker now: they own Saab. Lotus is following the same path with not one, but two F1 teams, and an aggressive model rollout plan. Now Marussia looks poised to follow the same path. The exotic Russian au…

Russian auto sales jump 45+ percent in June, July By Mark Kleis Like the U.S. and other global auto markets, Russia faced a steep decline in auto sales during the economic instability of 2009, and now the market appears to be showing signs of recovery after posting two consecutive months of increased sales nearing 50 percent compared to 2009. The Association of European Business (AEB) has reported the latest auto sales in Russia, and according to a report by Reuters, for the month of July Russia moved 173,171 new cars from dealer lots, narrowly missing the performance in June that resulted in 174,838 sales. These increases, compared to the same months in 2009, represen…

IMO, this is a dumb policy. there are tons of 3-letter words to search for. I just tried to search for "Ion" (as in the saturn ion, but I don't care to search for "saturn ion", because posts may not have included the word "saturn" in them). Other terms I can think of off the top of my head include Geo, LS1, LS2, GMC... *edit* well frack, it's not just a limit on the length of the search, it's a limit on any individual term in the search. So I can't even search for "Saturn Ion" because "Ion" is less than 4 letters. Seriously? Wow...

But this morning when I searched, the last post I made (according to the search) is back in mid March, whereas I just posted yesterday. Something going on with the database?

Sept. car sales down 10.4% in w. Europe; no recovery seen Paul McVeigh New-car sales in western Europe fell by 10.4 percent in September, according to J.D. Power Automotive Forecasting. The UK-based market researchers now expect a 6.4 percent decline to 12.8 million in the region's car sales this year, followed by a 1.8 percent drop to 12.57 million next year as government austerity measures dampen large consumer purchases. "The market continues to compare poorly year-on-year to a 2009 market that was inflated by government scrappage incentives," J.D. Power said in a statement. The company said an annualized selling rate of 12.4 million is weak by historical standard…

Made a tweak to the server settings at the recommendation of another webmaster who runs this same software. Please post here if you notice any unpleasantness in the site operation.

The occational outtages today were my doing as I was trying to get a new modual installed into the server. It is a modual that works to decrease our page loading times. From this, I've managed to shave 6 seconds off of our total page load time for the front page. Hopefully things feel a bit snappier around here.

The server is being migrated today, August 1, 2013. This is the move I spoke of a few weeks ago.

Hi all... it's that time again. The current server was installed in 2016 and it's time we pack up and move to a newer build. Because I have some other web projects going on, the power of the new server is significantly increased over the last one, so I'm hoping to get some big performance boosts to the site. We're talking going from my Encore to a Hellcat in terms of power. That said, this software is still rather bloated, so there is still an upper limit to how fast it will go no matter how much processor I throw at it. It will be a fun experiment. Also... there is 96 gigs worth of data to transfer, so we'll be down a while. I'll probably kick off the tran…

I've installed yet another server performance modification today. Looks like it has cut page load times in about half. Let me know if you experience any issues or have comments about the speed.

Some of you may have noticed the server struggling today. I think I may have just found and fixed the issue. One of the server log files had grown to 90 GB in size. I killed that log file and that seems to have eased the burden on the server. Search is still indexing due to a patch I applied earlier trying to fix the issue. Once that finishes up, we should be back to normal.

I'm going to be upgrading the invision power software that runs C&G tonight. Things might look a little weird or not operate at all for a short while. I plan to start the updates at 930 pm eastern.

Does it seem snappier since the power outage? The System logs show a far less burdened server....

Just a reminder that if you see an article or thread on Cheers and Gears that you enjoy, we ask that you might share it on the other social networks that you use. If you liked our coverage of the LA Auto Show this year, please consider sharing the LA Auto Show page with your friends. Those of you new to the site might not know it, but I travel to each of the big 4 auto shows every year during press day to get on site photos from the show floor. It costs money to attend these shows. More page views means more ad dollars and also means potentially more access to early information. We also don't mind if you follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+ and shar…

I had to change the email server provider for C&G. This is the server that sends out password resets and the newletters. If you get stuck in a password reset situation and aren't getting the email, please email admin at cheersandgears.com directly and I will reset your password for you.

WE'RE MOVING! Hey guys! The migration has begun! Hopefully, you won't notice much downtime. If you do, you should get a message at cheersandgears.com stating that we're moving. We plan for most (if not all) topics/posts to be safely moved to the new host. However, the last ones accessing the site might not be transferred over... so post now at your own risk :AH-HA_wink: See you guys soon!

As a reader for a while now, I thought I'd post to say that the site is almost unnavigatable. Problem one is that everything spawns a new tab. I'd really be nice if everything kept to the same tab like the old forum did. It's nearly impossible to browse anymore, since I have to pick a forum (new tab), pick a subforum (new tab), then I can read threads in the same tab. To go to the next bit of reading, it's close, close, new tab, new tab. It's getting to point where it's almost impossible to see the great content on the site. That kind of leads me to problem two, though I suspect if problem one were solved, problem two would vanish. When I co…

There is a major outage at a data center in Northern Virginia due to a cooling system issue. This data center stores most of the images and some of the code for the site. I have been informed that the restoration of that data center could last as long as 4 p.m. on May 31st. The site will appear in a broken state until the data center is back online. Thank you for your patience. Click here if you'd like to follow the restoration status.

We had a site outage today for about 8 hours. Our host had to restore us from backup. About 30 hours of posting were lost. Sorry for any inconvenience.

I just wanted to let you all know that I am (and have been) working on a major site reorganization. I'm coming to the point where things I change will start to be noticeable to general users. I just wanted to let you know the changes in store before they happen. This is not an exhaustive list, but intended to cover the major points. New theme - the new theme feels lighter (as in less busy) and allows me to reorganize the menus in a more coherent manner. You will also have the option of selecting a dark theme with a simple click of an icon in the upper right. Dark theme simply flips the background from light to dark and the font color vice versa. The sl…

I've found the site very slow to navigate today, with timeouts when clicking on topic links, on the 'Unread Content' link, etc. Some pages load quickly, some very slowly or are timing out.

Not sure if I am overlooking this or not, while I like the way posts now show up in this new updated version, I do have a challenge in getting to the Forum list of threads as from the home page I do not find where to go to get the forum list. The minimalist tool bar at the top has gotten too minimalist. This is what I see: Getting to this page I was lucky as I typed in /forums after the www.cheersandgears.com address in my browser.

What is wrong with C&G and never updating the news? There have been major events since it was last updated, such as GM's new 5year/100,000 mile warranty. If this site is going to remain competitive it needs to be updated at least once a day. I like this site lot more then GMI but am forced to read GMI due to the lack of news here.

Ater a rather long hiatus, Cheers and Gears' popular design competitions are back...with a vengence, by which I mean prizes. You read right, starting today, the winner of each competition will recieve a small prize that relates to the subject of the competition if possible. Don't expect a car or a vacation, but there will be a little reward for your outstanding efforts as well as a little motivation to keep that mouse or pencil busy. Entrants in the onging RWD Pontiac sketch and Camaro photoshop threads are eligible for prizes, so good luck and let's see your work! P.S. If you have anything of interest that you'd like to donate as a prize for a future competition, plea…
