  1. DETROIT, Nov 1 (Reuters) - Talks on a deal to sell Chrysler LLC to Nissan Motor Co and Renault SA have halted because the No. 3 U.S. automaker's owner favors a deal with General Motors Corp), The Detroit News reported on Saturday. Citing sources familiar with the situation, the newspaper said no further talks have been scheduled between private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management LP, which sees a deal with No. 1 U.S. automaker GM as financially more advantageous and better for the struggling U.S. auto industry. In an earlier report, The Detroit News said the Nissan-Renault alliance had proposed buying 20 percent of Chrysler. A spokesman for Cerberus declined to …

This week, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has sent a 27 page document with 107 questions asking about the recall and the timeline. Questions range from how the investigation process on the ignition "was not as robust as it should have been" to when GM decided to start investigating crashes with the 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt and 2007 Pontiac G5 where the air bag did not deploy. NHTSA has also requested documents ranging from complaints from owners to lawsuits involving GM vehicles in the recall. "We are a data-driven organization, and we w…

Bill Vlasic / The Detroit News The cost-cutting ax at General Motors Corp. fell on salaried workers Tuesday with the announcement that GM will freeze pension benefits for 36,000 U.S. employees and move toward so-called "defined-contribution" plans in the future. The changes will save cash-strapped GM an estimated $420 million a year and reduce the automaker's overall pension liability for white-collar employees by $1.6 billion by the end of 2006. I heard teeth grinding like a tranny that popped a drain plug. He claimed the typical bankruptcy costs “about $100 million a year in professional fees.” He did not include the social costs, i.e., the losses to workers, investors, and taxpayers. If we provide enough carcasses, the vultures will flourish and the restructuring of America—lost jobs, lower wages, higher health care costs, and defunct pensions—will create new opportunities for bankrupt…

  59. Recent increase in demand for GM Chevy Silverado and Sierra pickup trucks keeps plant operational. Increased demand for some General Motors trucks has helped General Motors' Powertrain Baltimore Transmission Plant avert a weeklong shutdown that was to have started Monday, a local spokesman for the plant said yesterday. The spokesman, John Raut, had said last month that the plant was planning to shut down and temporarily lay off all of its hourly workers for the week. The plant employs 238 people. But demand for some company vehicles has improved, including the Chevy Silverado and Sierra pickup trucks, for which the Baltimore plant makes six-speed automatic transmiss…

First up was Michael Millikin, GM's General Counsel. Millikin testified that he didn't know about the issue till February of this year. He also testified that lawyers working for GM during April 2013 had information pertaining to this from a case they were working on. However, they failed to notify engineers about the problem. "That was tragic. If they had brought it to my attention at that time, I certainly would have made sure that they had done something," Millikin said. Lower-level lawyers were …

Last month, the automaker reported it had lost $115 million in the third quarter but in a new filing with the U.S. Securities Exchange Commission, GM added new revenue from its finance arm, General Motors Acceptance Corp. The changes bolstered chairman and chief executive officer Richard Wagoner's argument that GM's recovery continues to pick up momentum. The second-quarter results, despite the $3.2 billion loss the company posted, showed that the company's turnaround efforts are paying dividends. So when "Old GM" found a buyer for its Indianapolis stamping plant, that was a happy piece of news; if it's not sold, the plant will be shut down in September of nex…
