Can GM leave the pulsatile engine behind? Regardless of whether someone worships the Global Warming religion or think androgynous climate change is utter rubbish, regardless of whether that person cares a lot about fuel economy or not at all, anyone who has ever driven an electric car or a hybrid in purely electric mode will immediately appreciate the eerie absence of noise and vibration of an electric motor. Afterall, there are no contained explosions, no exhaust pulses and no vibrations from metal slugs going up & down. Put the smoothest V12 next to an electric motor and it suddenly sounds and feels crude. Selling "Green" only goes so far... selling ultimate refine…

Previous Page Next Page Madness! That was our first thought when we saw the Chevrolet Colorado ZH2 - the result of a joint venture of General Motors and the U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC). Even though it might be called a Colorado, it is unlike anyone you'll find at your nearest Chevrolet dealership. The model is 6.5-feet tall and over 7-feet wide. To accodimate for the larger size, Chevrolet used a lengthened and reinforced version of the Colorado's chassis. A set of 37-inch tires and specially modified suspension help the ZH2 go though any terrain that the Army will throw its way. That's…

GM Gives Nissan A Piece Of Their Mind With A Recent Leaf Ad William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com May 28, 2011 This week, Nissan launched a new ad wondering what the world would look like if everything ran on gasoline. From household appliances to MP3 players, the bleak world Nissan portrays in their ad says it's time for the electric car. The ad also shows the main character filling up a Chevrolet Volt, saying how it's part of the problem. GM wasn't impressed with Nissan's new ad and decided to give Nissan a piece of their mind. GM product and brand communications chief Jason Laird wrote on Twitter today this, "A carmaker poking gentle f…

New spy photos reveal a lot about the body design of the next Chevy Cruze. The front half looks like the Tru 140S concept, and the rear half looks like a baby Impala, complete with the Impala's strong, sweeping, dipped quarter shoulder line, diagonal-cut decklid and taillamp design. The interior appears to be nice, too. Has anyone else seen them?

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., Dec. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The ballots are in! Car enthusiasts have voted for the third-annual Road & Track Readers' Choice Award: The Best Car 2006. Last year, it was the completely redesigned C6 that received the honor. This year, the high-performance 505-bhp Z06 led the remaining 11 Best Car finalists and never looked back. America's favorite sports car garnered nearly three times as many votes as its closest competitor. "The Chevrolet Corvette is an American sports-car icon,&…

The wife had Glee on tonight and Chevy has done a little on the show before but tonight they opened the flood gate. First off in the show they spot lighted a new Camaro SS convertible in Blue. They had Two new Corvettes also spot lighted during the show. There were several Cruze spots and the car looked good! Then they even had the ZR1 spot on near the end of the show. GM made good use of their money as they had great placment in one of the highest rated shows and really targeted the youth market. I will have to watch and see what else they show in future episodes. I hope to God they do not do the Volt dance LOL!

Orion plant cheers Malibu work Oakland Co. factory will manufacture 10 to 25 percent of redesigned sedan, which has garnered glowing reviews Sharon Terlep | Link to Original Article @ The Detroit News A few months ago, workers at General Motors Corp.'s Orion assembly plant weren't sure their factory would survive past this decade. But now, they're gearing up to help build the Chevrolet Malibu, one of GM's most promising new cars. It's work that could add up to 300 jobs by next spring, local union leaders said. Workers learned this week that the sprawling factory in northern Oakland County will manufacture anywhere from 10 percent to 25 percent of the much-hyped new M…

There has been some discussion about the merits of the Sonic versus the Hyundai Accent over at the Hyundai forums and Edmunds. In essence, people have been saying that the Accent is simply a better overall value than the Sonic. Now, I have no horse in the race here but it just strikes me as strange to hear that given my impression of the Accent but my knowledge of the vehicle may be somewhat dated (the last time I saw one was circa 2006 in Bushwick, Brooklyn and it wasn't a pretty site). In short, a lot of people are saying that the Accent will run longer and with less problems than a Chevy Sonic but the counterpoint to that is that when something does go wrong you out o…

Belated Blowout Chevy offers incentives on '06 models By RICK KRANZ | Link to Original Article @ AutoWeek | Updated: 06/25/07, 9:23 am et DETROIT -- Chevrolet's 0 percent interest program to sell 10,000-plus new 2006 models sitting on lots nationwide strikes some Chevy dealers as being way overdue. The program, which began June 15 and expires Wednesday, June 27, offers 0 percent financing for up to 60 months on 2006s, including 404 Corvettes and the last 16 SSR hot rod pickups. As an alternative, rebates of up to $7,000 are available on some models. "It's great," said one Chevrolet dealer who has more than 20 2006 vehicles in stock. "I'm as happy as a lark, but wh…

http://gm-volt.com/2010/03/26/gm-exec-gen-3-voltec-battery-to-have-shortened-lifespan-simpler-shape-and-be-offered-in-smaller-ranges/ Some thoughts: - I'm assuming Gen 3 will be out 2020ish. If GM is planning all these ways to cut costs on the battery in 2020 then they must not be expecting LiIon batteries to drop much in price in the next decade+. - GM's move to smaller ranges makes a lot more sense. I've always argued the smaller the battery the more utilization and the more sense it makes for more people. This is also a little tip of the hat by GM to Toyota that Toyota was on the right track with the plug-in Prius range. - I love the "no point in going from 40 t…

For the second month in a row Motor Trend claims the 2014 Chevy Impala with be the first large or full size car equipped with a normally aspirated four cylinder engine. This is wrong on a number of levels. First, they are forgetting that the Buick Lacrosse on the same platform even, offered the 2.4 for 2010-2011. And yes, that is non-turbo, non-hybrid. Few takers, and it was discontinued when the Regal came around. If you want to go way back in the time machine, Chevy offered the old Iron Duke 4 banger in the Lumina, a similar sized, 6 passenger and yet not full size car about 20 years ago. If that doesn't count for you, the current Honda Accord qualifies as a large car …

While everyone has been going gaga over the possible fruition of the mid-engine Corvette, there is another juicy Corvette just around the corner. A spy photographer has gotten some up close photos of the next Corvette ZR1. Engineers have done their best to cover up the front, but there are some details that can be pulled out. First are the large vents on the bumper and a massive air intake. All of that air is needed if there is a 700 horsepower 6.2L supercharged V8 under the hood (according to rumor) along with massive brakes. We're guessing there is also some venting on the hood to provide additional cooling. The back features small uprights for a large rear wing (s…

With the current NHTSA investigation into the Chevrolet Volt's battery pack, GM decided to use a different battery chemistry for its upcoming Chevrolet Spark electric vehicle. GM announced today the Spark EV will use lithium phosphate batteries for its Spark EV rather than the lithium metal oxide batteries used in the Volt. The lithium phosphate batteries store less energy and require more space than lithium metal batteries. However, lithium phosphate batteries are more stable than lithium metal batteries. “Lithium phosphate chemistry looks like it could be more friendly in terms of heat management. But it stores less energy. There is a tremendous amount of new discovery…

That is also what Toyota is doing. I particularly liked this quote: "According to analyst Eric Noble, president of CarLab, an automotive consultant, GM’s decision to kill the Converj is “a tacit admission from GM that they over-batteried the Volt.”" He sounds like me. It was just anounced that Roush for the first time will start to offer some aftermarket parts like tuners for GM truck. Can we see this as a look into the future? I posted a statment from someone a while ago from GM that There was a chance of a Roush Camaro. Either way We sell Roush products at work and they have some real quality items, not inexpensive but great quality. I see Roush products only being a big plus for Chevy and GM owners and I hope this leads to bigger and better things. Roush has always done a lot of work for GM but kept it quite. Chevy HHR A turbocharger roosts under the HHR’s retro-styled hood. BY ERIK JOHNSON, August 2007 As Chrysler uses Detroit’s annual Woodward Dream Cruise to roll out another snoozer special edition of the extremely long-in-the-tooth PT Cruiser—this time the Sunset Boulevard Cruiser, inspired by a street 2300 miles and several tax brackets away from Motown’s famed Avenue—Chevrolet has decided to inject a little bit of muscle into the event. Make that a very little bit of muscle, because the bow-tie brand has seen fit to unleash upon the world the Chevrolet HHR SS, which is, of course, based upon the diminutive HHR trucklet. Where’d A Little Truck Like You Get All Them H…

I believe in neither Global Warming nor the importance of reducing carbon emissions. But, I can see a place for entry luxury vehicles with a refined, fuel efficient and sprightly power train. Such a vehicle will have significant appeal regardless of the potential buyer's propensity to drink Climate Change Coolaid. In this regard, the Volt is lacking in terms of cost effectiveness and performance -- it is a nice Halo car, but it won't be a volume seller. Paying $15,000 extra to save even 70% on the average $1000~1200 annual gas tab doesn't make sense because you won't break even for 17~22 years, and the public is already beginning to awaken to the fraud that is global warm…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com June 26, 2012 Chevrolet seems to pulling a page out of Buick’s playbook; offering hybrid versions of their mid and full-size sedans. Buick does it with the Regal and LaCrosse, and Chevrolet currently does it with the Malibu and soon to be Impala. Spy shots of a Impala pre-production prototype running around with no camouflage were caught. This wouldn’t be news, except for one small change. The grill on this particular Impala goes away from the Camaro-esque, three-bar grille, towards a solid insert with two small openings on the top and bottom. This is most likely is an aerodynamic aid to help improve fuel economy and mig…

Fast forward 2 years to April 2017 and you go from a car to a CUV in the FNR-X concept that Chevrolet says will led the push on Plug-In hybrids for the Chinese market. For the past few years, Toyota was the only truck brand to use the SAE's J2807 towing standard to rate the maximum towing. Well another automaker has joined Toyota in using J2807. Today, GM announced the tow ratings for the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500. GM says both models retain maximum tow rating of 12,000 pounds. But for a Silverado/Sierra 1500 to achieve that, you need to have a two-wheel drive double-cab model equipped with the 6.2L V8 engine and maximum towing package. Other configurations of GM's full-size truck lineup have seen their rating drop by an average of 400 pounds. For example, the four-wheel drive crew cab equipped with 5.3L V8 has …

Ponce de Leon spent his career searching the Florida wilderness for the mythical fountain of youth, hoping to recapture his glory days. Car buyers often follow his example, buying the same kind of car they had in their youth, either as a restoration project or in the form of a new nostalgia model from the same manufacturer. The question now for the domestic car industry is whether such cars can also serve to recapture their glory days, when the car makers commanded huge market share with hot models that future owners sketched in study hall, or plastered on the inside of their lockers. Ford has remained in this sporty coupe segment since its introduction of the Mustang…

GM @ South Florida Auto Show 2008 Malibu LTZ The Malibu is a wonderful looking car inside and out. More handsome than either the Accord or Camry and with a superior interior, too. You can count cutlines and worry about the material five inches under the seat all you'd like, but the look and functionality is far superior to the doofy Toyota and lousy Honda interfaces. Plus, nothing looks more ridiculous than the Accord's gearshift indicator. Like a playtoy. Malibu hybrids were at both shows, but the Tampa show had an interesting variation...

It has been a few months since we last reported on the mid-engine Corvette. But thanks to a spy photographer, we have some new pictures of the mid-engine model which gives us some new details. The pictures show the mid-engine Corvette playing around with a couple of ZR1 prototypes in the snow. When put next to the ZR1 prototype, the mid-engine Corvette's proportions are very different - short front end and long rear end. It appears the mid-engine prototype is also sporting massive air intakes in the rear fenders. We still don't know anything about the mid-engine Corvette's powertrain. We've been hearing the possibility of a 6.2L DOHC V8 to a turbocharged V6. …

I got to take a short drive in a Hydrogen Fuel cell Equinox Saturday. This was my first chance to try a electric GM product. While it was powered by a Hydrogen electric fuel cell it gave me some idea of what to expect of acceleration of the electric drivetrain that is not the same but similar in many respects to the Volt. The torqe is like right now. I spun the tires into the traction control and it did not stop till I lifted down the track. It had plenty of pep. It was dead quiet accept for a little electric motor noise that a radio would cover easy. The dash has a meter to show electric use vs a tach. Coasting it would show the regenerative power going back in. …

The 2017 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport provides a middle ground between the standard Corvette and the all-mighty Z06. Case in point is the price. Chevrolet announced the pricing for the Grand Sport which begins at $66,445 for the coupe and $70,445 for the convertible (both prices include destination). The standard Corvette starts at $56,395 and the Corvette Z06 begins at $80,395. The Grand Sport gets the Z06's chassis tuning, upgraded cooling systems, aerodynamic package, electronic limited-slip differential, and Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires. Optional is the Z07 package that adds carbon ceramic-matrix brakes and Michelin Pilot Sport 2 Cup tires. The 6.2L V8 with …

Well since no one else has said anything I thought I might post this so we are not the only GM site without a thread on the ZL1 performance. This week the cover has been pulled off the road test of the Zl1. It was tested vs the 302 Boss that the media has fallen in love with for it's track performance and the Camaro beat The HP helped a little but the new suspension has taught the fat lady to really dance. In the mean tme Al Oppenheiser says that he feels the ZL1 will remain faster than the coming Shelby. I know Al and he is one a real car guy and two he is not a BS er. They have done computer sims on both cars and they feel the Shelby will not be able to use all the po…

General Motors announced today that certain 2015 Chevrolet and GMC trucks and SUVs will trade in their six-speed automatic for an eight-speed automatic. Those models include, Chevrolet Silverado GMC Sierra GMC Yukon Denali/Yukon XL Denali The catch is that all of these models must have the 6.2L V8 to get the eight-speed. Automobile Magazine reports that the Cadillac Escalade is also line to get the eight-speed transmission in the near future. GM says the new eight-speed is about the same weight as the outgoing six-speed, and features a wider gear spread which allows for more torque to be available in first gear. Other details such as fuel economy numbers an…

December 1, 2011 - Drew Dowdell Of Volt owners surveyed by Consumer Reports, 93% of them replied that they would "definitely" buy another Chevy Volt. However, considering less than 6,300 Chevrolet Volts have been sold so far, that number could change. Another issue with the number is that the survey was complete prior to the NHTSA announced an investigation into potential Volt battery fires that can possibly occur in the weeks following a severe crash. Chevy announced a remarkable goodwill program to Volt owners offering them the option of a free loaner car, even a Corvette, while the NHTSA completed its investigation. Chevrolet had originally announced a goal of 10,0…

Why can't we have this as our new Trailblazer? Even if the mall were in deep back country, we'd still get there. Something that cannot be said of the Equinox or Traverse.

Chevy Camaro, EV, Hybrid, What do you think? Discuss! We are on the cusp of change, change is never liked by all, but is inevitable. With that said, and brought up by other members in some other threads, I felt it was time we had a section to discuss what the future of the Camaro might be. Will it include an EV only powertrain, Hybrid, both and will AWD come to the Camaro? Or due to being a pony car, should it stay ICE only. Sound off on what you think should happen and your thoughts about this!

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com December 10, 2013 The Chevrolet Corvette Stingray comes with the choice of two different transmissions; a seven-speed manual and six-speed automatic. But a leaked paper from the Society of Automotive Engineers publication says that an eight-speed automatic will be coming to the Stingray. This paper, which has been pulled, was written by engineers at GM who worked on the project. The eight-speed, named 8L90, will feature shorter first gear ratio to improve acceleration, better fuel economy thanks to a greater spread of gear ratios, and the ability to handle up to 738 pound-feet of torque. A spokesman confirmed to Edmunds…

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said today it's opening a formal safety investigation into the Chevrolet Volt after further tests sparked fires and raised more questions about the safety of the Volt's lithium ion battery packs. Back on May 12th, NHTSA performed a side pole impact test, on a Chevrolet Volt at a testing facility in Wisconsin. Three weeks after, the Volt caught on fire with the battery being the cause of the fire. On November 14th, NHTSA performed three follow-up battery-level tests to simulate the incident. Two out the of three tests produced thermal events, including fire. Because of the results, NHTSA has opened an investigation. GM …

The rapture of the hypercar The Corvette ZR1 burns oil for a good cause: awesome power and agility By DAN NEIL, RUMBLE SEAT 9:48 PM PDT, October 16, 2008 Dear Future: We're really, really sorry. Kinda got carried away, what with all the petroleum and all. You're probably wishing that we had saved a few barrels of oil for you, for airline travel and making fertilizer. And those little plastic swim fins would come in handy, now that Greenland has melted. I know, "sorry" doesn't feed the bulldog. What's that? You've eaten your bulldog? OK, you're just making this harder. The problem with petroleum, you see, is that it's so utterly intoxicating, so rapturously…

I have seen two Volts this week. Chevy has just finally gotten a limited number to dealers here. These are the first production ones I have seen here. Sad it took till Oct 17th to get them here in time for winter. GM really needed to get them here last July to really make a good impression. The cold will hurt the electric range for them right out of the box.

The November 5th issue of Autoweek offers great praise for the new Malibu. They praised the ride, styling, handling, trunks space, fit and finish. They dislikes the dash lights and the location of the paddle shifters on the wheel. Overall they feel they it the mark and said they were very impress after back to back drives in the Toyota. Som in the group compare the car the the VW Passat. They said the ride is a littler firmer than the avverage Chevy but that is what they need to attract the new buyers. The car tested was the LTZ. They also noted the Chrome trim was a great touch. They were also impressed it was the first Chevy to attract attention [outsid…

2019 CHEVROLET VOLT CHARGES QUICKER, IMPROVES CONVENIENCE 2018-06-28 DETROIT — A new 7.2 kW charging system on the 2019 Chevrolet Volt cuts recharging times nearly in half by adding about twice the all-electric driving range per hour of charge. The new system headlines a number of additional enhancements for the 2019 Volt and increases the vehicle’s all-electric utility for owners who take advantage of “opportunity charging,” or plugging in around town to top off the battery charge. “With about twice the range added during 240V Level 2 charging sessions, the 2019 Volt’s 7.2 kW system makes opportunity charging more worthwhi…

Chevrolet release the EPA estimated range of 238 miles for the Chevy Bolt yesterday. A few publications released their experiences exceeding that, with some going as high as 250 miles on a single charge. With most of the affordable EV's having ranges between 90 - 120 miles, a lot of fuss has been made over electric vehicle range anxiety. So far, Telsa is the only manufacturer to offer vehicles with ranges over 200 miles, that are also supplemented by a network of free fast charging stations only for Tesla owners. While the Bolt doesn't have a manufacturer supplied charging network, there is a vast network of free and pay chargers out there. Plugged into a Le…

I figured some one would post this. The National Geographic Channels Ultimate Factories went to GM Warren fab shop and showed one of the Volt prototypes being built. It was a cool show to see them at work in the shop putting the car together. But it also showed the Volt in detail on construction and many of the parts that go into it. Watch for a replay as this will be shown again. I did not know about it till I got a internal e mail from GM telling employees about it.

The Chevrolet Corvette Z06 is a hot car. Both in terms of performance and problems. Motor1 reports that Chevrolet will be introducing improvements for the Z06's cooling in 2017. Tadge Juechter, Corvette executive chief engineer said a small number of Z06 owners were experiencing heatsoak or overheating issues when running their models hard on the track. Juechter said this group was small, but very vocal with this issue. Chevrolet says full details about the changes will be announced later this year, but did say one of the changes will be a new hood with improved cooling vents. Source: Motor1.com View full article

http://www.automobilemag.com/news/porsche-pdk-shifts-slower-2017-chevrolet-camaro-zl1-automatic/ "When the 2017 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 hits showrooms later this year, it’ll be the automaker’s first car to get the new ten-speed automatic, a transmission Chevy claims is so dialed in that it shifts faster than Porsche’s outstanding PDK dual-clutch gearbox. Chevy previously claimed its new ten-speed was a quick shifter during our ride-along in a Camaro ZL1 prototype earlier this year. Now Chevy has numbers to back it up. Based on Chevy’s own testing, the 2017 Camaro ZL1’s automatic shifts from 1st to 2nd gear 36 percent quicker than the Porsche PDK. The automaker claims th…

We've seen spy shots of the mid-engine Chevrolet Corvette in the snow and at GM's proving grounds. Now, we have a set of spy shots of a mid-engine Corvette at a McDonalds' drive-thru. The pictures were captured by a Motor Trend reader in Cadillac, Michigan (northwest of Detroit). The test mule was undergoing some public road testing and it appears there was a current Corvette and what appears to be a Porsche 911. Despite the heavy amount of camouflage, you can make out some Corvette cues such as similar front-end styling as the current model and hood cutout. The double-bubble roof is present as is a set of new wheels that are presumed to be production ones. We'l…

The Best Driver’s Car contenders are selected from all new or significantly revised performance cars launched in the 12 months prior to the test. To pick the winner, the editors of Motor Trend conduct objective and subjective testing – including digitally instrumented laps at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, and high-speed driving up and down a 4.3-mile hill climb on a closed rural highway – to determine which car delivers the most engaging experience behind the wheel. After completing that battery of tests, the editors of Motor Trend wrote: “The transformation of the fifth-generation Camaro from ‘muscle car that handles pretty well’ to Best Driver’s Car winner is astou…

The Corvette Stingray's fuel economy numbers as measure by the official EPA test cycles are... Corvette Stingray -- 6.2L Pushrod OHV V8 -- 17 (City) / 29 (Highway) MPG* * 17/28 mpg w/o Cylinder Deactivation; 17/30 mpg in Eco Mode (Enables Cylinder Deactivation) Compared to the outgoing (C6) model, the 7th Generation Corvette is 1 mpg (city) / 2 mpg (Highway) better in fuel economy without relying on cylinder deactivation. With AFM enabled, this climbs to 1 mpg (city) / 4 mpg (Highway). This is in fact better than an 2009 Acura TL Type-S (17 / 26 mpg) makes the Corvette the most fuel efficient car in its performance category -- certainly the most fuel efficient vehicle…
