If i recall, one of the big reasons SUV sales of a certain vehicle weight or higher were so high was because of the accelerated tax credit for buying such vehicles. Um, the government is responsible for driving SUV sales and now they are using those sales as a reason to lynch the domestics? Despite toyota and Nissan expanding their full size truck and SUV offerings immensely? Kia too? WHat am I missing?

United States Postal Service (USPS) has taken an interesting road to updating their fleet of mail delivery vehicles. Lets start with March 24th, 2022 the USPS signs a contract with OshKosh Defense to the tune of $2.98 billion dollars for 50,000 mail trucks and 10,019 are to be EV. These new trucks are to replace the very aged fleet that is currently running on empty and lack many modern conveniences. The LLV or Long-Life Delivery Vehicles lacked many things from AC to a wide variety of safety items and on top were not very efficient for actually delivering mail on top of the fact that the 190,000-vehicle fleet has an average age of 30 years. In…

The Volt: Still not a hybrid... no lie! This morning the automotive press’ inter-tubes went all a flutter over the revelation that the just released Chevrolet Volt has a clutch that can engage the gasoline engine to the generator which could itself be connected to the wheels when the vehicle is running over 70mph and the battery is depleted. This prompted cries of “GM LIED!” and “IT’S JUST A HYBRID!” due to the fact that since near the beginning, GM has been marketing the Volt as an electric vehicle with an onboard range extender and it had no physical connection from engine to wheels. That got me thinking: What exactly is the definition of a hybrid…

There are just too many competitors in the North American automobile market. And we need to decide which ones we want to survive. Maybe if someone put it to congress that way, it might have an impact on the numbskulls.

This semi-regular column is written (in his own blood) by an automotive sage and noted malcontent, known as The Mechanic. Mercilessly beaten as a child with rolled-up back issues of old car magazines, our free-spoken hero developed a unique "for your own good" take on cars and the auto industry, along with an unfortunate habit of setting himself ablaze. Later, after a distinguished career as an automotive journalist and magazine editor, he cast off the reins of his musty oppressors, carved out his superego with a plastic spork and became The Mechanic. It happened twice this week. Somebody poked a head into my cubicle and said, "Hey, The Mechanic, have you heard? Kids do…

TOKYO (Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp aims to sell around 10.4 million vehicles worldwide in 2009, up 18 percent from last year as it grabs market share in North America and taps growing demand in China and other emerging economies, business daily Nikkei reported on Wednesday. Clearing the 10 million milestone would be an auto industry first and likely cement Toyota's position as the world's biggest car maker. Toyota surpassed General Motors Corp to take the top spot in 2006, according to Automotive News. "It is incrementally good news," said CLSA Asia-Pacific Markets auto analyst Christopher Richter, who estimates Toyota's sales for 2009 at 10.2 million units. "They cont…

Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T) and Mazda Motor Corp (7261.T) plan to build a $1.6 billion U.S. assembly plant, the two said on Friday, as part of an alliance that will also see the Japanese automakers jointly develop electric vehicle technologies. The two will take small stakes in each other as part of the tie-up: Toyota, the world's second-largest automaker by vehicle sales last year, will take a 5 percent share of Mazda, extending its dominance in Japan's auto sector. Mazda will take a 0.25 percent share of its larger rival. The plant, something of a surprise at a time of overcapacity in the U.S. market, will be a boost to U.S. President Donald Trump, who campaign…

Toyota developing anti-drunk driving gadget Toyota Motor said Monday it was developing anti-drunk driving equipment that would lock the ignition of a vehicle if high levels of alcohol are detected in the driver. The system features a hand-held breathalyser, equipped with a digital camera, that detects alcohol consumption and photographs the driver's face for identification, a company statement said. If the driver tests positive, the system either warns him or her, or locks the vehicle's ignition depending on the level of alcohol detected, Toyota said. The carmaker is conducting tests with affiliate truck maker Hino Motors, and will install the equipment in sele…

_ Toyota Led All Automakers With Most Recalled Vehicles in 2009 In the midst of recalls for sudden acceleration issues, frame rot, and other issues, Toyota has the "honor" of best ever number of recalls in 2009 with a staggering 4.87 million cars and trucks effected. Ford, with its ongoing issue of older cruise control systems, was second place with 4.52 million vehicles. Without the years-old cruise control issue, Ford would have had posted best year ever. General Motors rounded out the top three, with 2.24 million recalls announced in 2009. Toyota says may not achieve rise in Sept. U.S. sales Wednesday September 26, 2:33 am ET TOKYO (Reuters) - A top executive at Toyota Motor Corp (Tokyo:7203.T - News) said on Wednesday that achieving a rise in U.S. sales in September might be tough because of a spike in sales in the same month a year earlier. Toyota surpassed GM in sales, but what if? Edward Lapham | Automotive News / May 1, 2007 - 11:51 am / It's been a week since we learned that Toyota nudged past General Motors to become the world's No. 1 automaker in the first quarter. Since then, not much has changed. The sun still rises in the east and sets in the west. I know, I've checked. In autodom, factories are still building cars and trucks, and dealers are still selling them, although not as many as they might like. I know, I've checked. The price of gasoline has continued to climb and is now more than $3 a gallon in most U.S. markets. I know, I've paid it. There has been the predictable patter in…

Jan. 2 (Bloomberg) -- Toyota Motor Corp.'s namesake division may declare itself the No. 1 auto brand in the U.S. for 2007. General Motors Corp.'s Chevrolet won't agree. The dispute pivots on one question: How should sales of Toyota's Scion cars be tallied? At stake are bragging rights that go with the top-selling line of autos in the U.S. Toyota's count includes Scion, cars that bear no Toyota badges and are marketed separately. By that measure, the Japanese automaker's lead through November sets the stage for a full-year win. Leave Scion out, and Chevy will likely retake the title when results are released tomorrow. ``I don't think for a second that Scion is a T…

Toyota, Honda must fess up to less vroom New testing standards force carmakers to reduce claims Nick Bunkley / The Detroit News March 13, 2006 It turns out Toyota Motor Corp. isn't as strong as it appears in at least one area -- under the hood. Testing under stricter new horsepower standards reveals that most of the models in Toyota's lineup have less oomph than the company has advertised. Even though the engines are unchanged, the automaker had to lower the horsepower ratings on all but few 2006 Toyota, Lexus and Scion models. The reductions range from 4 to 20 horsepower compared with 2005 models. Honda Motor Co., the No. 2 Japanese automaker, also has downgr…

Kathy Roberts, a paralegal from Plymouth, Mich., was skeptical of a recent postcard she received from her local car dealer. It offered to put her in a new vehicle for $26,000, the same price she paid for her one-year-old Dodge Journey that she'd already driven 14,000 miles. Despite her doubts, Roberts's husband called the dealer and was told that they would offer her a brand new version of the same model, in the same color, with only 29 miles—all for the same monthly payment. With incentives and rebates, she actually came out $700 ahead. "I was thrilled. A new car without any more money!" Customers like Roberts are finding that their high-quality used cars are a coveted…

Japan's Trade Surplus Vaporizes The Business Insider Talk about cliff diving. Japan, which at one point was synonymous with phrase 'trade surplus', is now a net importer. The country's trade surplus collapsed a staggering 99% in March, as a sharp dropoff in imports was not matched on the other side. The collapse means Japan ran a deficit for the year -- its first in 28 years.

Ok gang, I'm tackling a new study, transgenerational appeal of cars and I need the help from the young and old alike. Here it goes: What nameplates existing or retired do you think appeal or could appeal to the young and old alike. Prime example the Ford Mustang has strong appeal to boomers and millenials. Please state your age and the vehicles you think fit the bill. Price be damned, but we all know Ferrari's and Porsche's have widespread appeal. I'm looking for more attainable vehicles. If or when we get enough responses, we'll move along to phase two. Thanks gang! :CG_all:

Energy transition is the ultimate challenge in electric vehicles (EVs) and technological advances are reducing costs while offering greater efficiency as demanded by consumers. Driving the market is the entire powertrain made up of power-dense batteries, electric motors and wide-bandgap semiconductor solutions. GaN or Gallium Nitride is a wide-bandgap material with outstanding intrinsic characteristics that can offer system level advantages with better performance. Lower weight, higher power density for increased range is what GaN can deliver due to operating with a higher efficiency at a higher frequency providing a reduction in passive components while increasi…

US car companies trucking out of trouble 26.11.05 By Alastair Sloane Once upon a time, an American car was just that. American cars stood out. They were mostly as big as Texas and covered in chrome. They had big motors in the front, big boots in the back - and big bench seats in between. Some had fins, swept-back things designed to give the car the same presence on land as a shark has in the water. These made some cars look hideous - even to Americans. The fins later came to symbolise American excess, in car design and in everyday living. Classic Americans included the 1949 Ford pick-up, 1955 Chevrolet, with its small block V8, and 1963 Buick Riviera. The Rivi…

http://money.cnn.com/2006/09/27/markets/oil_eia/index.htm gas prices continue to drop--maybe theres still some hope. but but then again: so if 60 is "good" why the hell was it almost 80? supposed to go over 100? are we making a difference in some way with ethanol, conservation, boycotts, and prius' and hybrids in general. or does this have more to do with the usual seasonal changes in demand. which really werent so usual since the past couple of years. ive heard several "analysts" suggest months ago oil and gas prices would plummet at some point. i remember laughing at the time because one of the qualifiers was when things settle down in the mid east. lik…

The average American motorist is driving substantially fewer miles for the first time in 26 years Link to USA Today article because of high gas prices and demographic shifts, according to a USA TODAY analysis of federal highway data. The growth in miles driven has leveled off dramatically in the past 18 months after 25 years of steady climbs despite the addition of more than 1 million drivers to the nation's streets and highways since 2005. Miles driven in February declined 1.9% from February 2006 before rebounding slightly for a 0.3% year-over-year gain in March, data from the Federal Highway Administration show. Buick or Mercedes? Chevy or Audi? Lincoln or Volvo? Ford or Volkswagen? It's the American maker in every case, according to the latest J.D. Power and Associates durability study, an industry benchmark. The achievement reflects two trends that are largely hidden behind Detroit's spate of bad financial news and fire-sale discounts: The reliability of American cars, trucks and SUVs is up, and the reliability of European imports, especially German ones, is down. Consumer Reports, the influential nonprofit product-test magazine, sees the same trend. "Domestic manufacturers are now in second place behind the Japanese" when it comes to reliability, spo…

UAW Extends Chrysler Talks, Focus Turns To Ford William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com September 23, 2011 The United Auto Workers have finished their first contract negotiation with General Motors last Friday. Now, Chrysler and Ford go for their turns with the UAW. Chrysler and the UAW have agreed to extend contract negotiations for an additional four weeks. Previously, the two had a one week extension to hammer out a new deal. The negotiations are centered around a new wage and benefit pack that will impact around 23,000 workers. This four week extension will help the UAW focus more on the most difficult negotiation, Ford. The UAW wants th…

UAW losing pay edge The UAW is losing its edge in pay compared with nonunionized U.S. assembly plant workers for foreign companies, even as Detroit automakers aim for deeper benefit cuts to trim their losses. In at least one case last year, workers for a foreign automaker for the first time averaged more in base pay and bonuses than UAW members working for domestic automakers, according to an economist for the Center for Automotive Research and figures supplied to the Free Press by auto companies. In that instance, Toyota Motor Corp. gave workers at its largest U.S. plant bonuses of $6,000 to $8,000, boosting the average pay at the Georgetown, Ky., plant to the equival…

UAW May Form Merger(s) to Boost Membership The United Auto Workers has not ruled out merging with another union, UAW President Ron Gettelfinger said Thursday. The comment came during a question-and-answer session Gettelfinger hosted on the union's Web site, UAW.org. "The UAW has not ruled out merging with other unions," he wrote in response to a question from a union member. UAW membership fell to 557,000 in 2005 down from 1.5 million 20 years ago. With General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. offering buyouts to more than 70,000 workers, UAW membership is expected to continue to decline. Industry experts have speculated about a merger that could give the organizati…

UAW May Negotiate With Big Three At Once William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com April 28, 2011 UAW President Bob King said the union may hold contracts talk with Detroit Three at the same time. King was speaking at a luncheon hosted by the Automotive Press Association in Detroit talking about UAW and the future. “We have very advanced and good relationships, and we should be able to work together. I would hope that we don’t have to get to the point of picking a target.” King said to reporters. Usually, the UAW picks one automaker they think can give them the best contract and then uses that with the other automakers. This gives UAW members…

UAW Membership to Fall Below 500K UAW membership is expected to fall below 500,000 -- one-third its peak levels of three decades ago -- after Ford Motor Co. completes its buyouts of 38,000 hourly workers represented by the Detroit-based autoworkers union. The Ford buyouts, part of a sweeping restructuring plan, came months after 46,800 UAW members took early retirement or other buyouts from General Motors Corp. and Delphi Corp., its parts-making spin-off, which is in bankruptcy. Analysts speculate that the UAW, which must negotiate new deals with automakers next year, may need to merge with another union or at least drastically slash its own staff. But members say it n…

UAW Seeking A Record $8,000 To $10,000 Signing Bonus William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com September 10, 2011 Previous UAW contract negotiations with the big three would center around increased hourly wages and top benefits. But during this round of contract negotiations, the UAW could give up the increases and go for the lump sum. In a report done by Bloomberg, the UAW could ask Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors for a signing bonus of of $8,000 to $10,000 per member. UAW's future: Givebacks or else Delphi starts clock ticking on rich wage, benefit packages across U.S. auto industry. By Bryce G. In addition to Delphi Corp., the clock may be ticking against workers' rich package of wages and benefits at other Detroit automakers , analysts say. Compensation packages are worth more than $130,000 a year. That may put a smile on workers' faces, but the labor costs also give American automakers …

The derision was deserved. The U.K. automotive industry was second in scale only to that of the U.S. in the 1950s. It was the world’s leading car exporter, putting bread on hundreds of thousands of tables across the country. Today, the U.K.’s indigenous manufacturers have either vanished or been taken over by foreign competitors. No other country so nonchalantly kissed goodbye to so much potential we…

Unbearable lightness? To make cars frugal, they will have to become lighter—and more expensive From The Economist. WHEN it comes to motor vehicles there is widespread belief—at least in America—that bigger is not only better, but safer too. The assumption is that nothing beats having lots of steel around you in a crash. And it is true, to some extent. All things being equal, the driver of a large SUV (sports-utility vehicle) is less likely to be killed than the driver of a small car in a head-on collision between the two. The downside is that SUV drivers are far more likely than car drivers to die in solitary roll-over accidents induced by the vehicle’s own weight, its…

From a working paper at the National Bureau of Economic Research "The current US ethanol mandate requires that about 5 percent of world caloric production from corn, wheat, rice, and soybeans be used for ethanol generation. As a result, world food prices are predicted to increase by about 30 percent and global consumer surplus from food consumption is predicted to decrease by 155 billion dollars annually." Harvard's Jeffrey Miron opines: "In other words, the mandate needs to generate at least $155 billion worth of annual benefits from reduced global warming to pass a cost-benefit test. Since ethanol use appears to increase GHG emissions, the mandate fails big time! Befo…
