Eyes on the Road By Joseph B. White (WSJ) Amid Fuel-Economy, Emissions Debate, GM's Lutz Says Horsepower Still Sells Product Chief Issues Challenge to Green Critics April 9, 2007 Here in the temporary capital of Horsepower Nation, New York City, Bob Lutz, General Motors Corp.'s vice chairman for product development worldwide, last week painted a bleak picture of the automobile fuel efficiency and global warming debate swirling around the auto industry today. And he had a challenge for the industry's green critics. Mr. Lutz, never one to shy from jousting with the industry's detractors, faces a difficult task in his role as chief product strategist for the worl…

John Revill July 7, 2008 06:01 CET WROCLAW, Poland -- Chevrolet expects to increase its European sales by 10 percent to nearly a half million cars this year. "I think we can grow from 450,000 to close to 500,000 this year," Steve Flamand, Chevrolet Europe product marketing manager, said. Flamand said Chevrolet mainly expects to increase sales in growth markets such as Russia, Turkey and eastern Europe. But the brand also believes it can boost sales slightly in western Europe despite the region's economic downturn and forecasts for a flat new-car market in 2008. "For other volume brands, thinking about growth is quite a challenge," Flamand told Automotive News…

John Revill July 7, 2008 06:01 CET General Motors Europe's decision to build its new Astra in Rüsselsheim, Germany, will not affect other plants scheduled to produce the key model starting in 2010, a top union official says. Currently, GM's Rüsselsheim plant only builds upper-medium cars for its Opel and Vauxhall subsidiaries. But weak sales in the segment have forced GM to scale back its production schedule. The factory is currently running at a little more than half its 218,000 annual capacity. GM's June 20 announcement that the Astra will be built in Rüsselsheim came as a bit of a surprise. Industry observers expected GM to move production of the Saab 9-3 to R…

It Finishes Among the Backbenchers in German Quality Survey. [source: MotorAuthority] German Cars Tops In Latest ADAC Breakdown Statistics Reliability is the main concern for most car buyers, and for obvious reason - for such a large investment, the car better start up and take you where you need to go. And while all brands have their issues, it turns out German cars fared best this time around, mirroring last year's results. The turnaround is something of an upset, since Japanese cars dominated most of the previous decade in reliability surveys. The Germans have definitely upped their game, however, with Audi at the leading edge. The…

GM Announced this morning that the company will be investing $300 million and adding 400 jobs at its Orion Township, Michigan assembly plant. The investment will go towards facilities to produce a new electric vehicle for the Chevrolet brand. The new vehicle will be the second such vehicle, after the Cadillac EV Crossover, to be built on GM's new BEV3 platform, an advance version of the same platform that underpins the Chevrolet Bolt EV. The Orion plant currently builds the Chevrolet Sonic, Chevrolet Bolt EV, and the Cruise AV test vehicles. There are about 880 hourly and 130 salary employees working there. Along with the investment announcement for Orio…

Just when you thought General Motors couldn't dig any deeper with the ignition switch recall, they seem to find a way. The U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee released over 600 pages of documents relating to the GM ignition switch recall early this week and it shows a number of deeply entrenched problems. Let's begin with a story we reported last week that said two engineers from GM, Gary Altman and Ray DeGiorgio were put on paid leave. We knew DeGiorgio was put on paid leave for testifying for not knowing the part change, even though he signed a document authorizing the change. But Altman was another question as we didn't know why he was put on paid leave. We now …

Whenever someone brings up hybrid and GM's pickups, we're reminded of the two-mode hybrid system GM installed on the last-generation Silverado and Sierra that only delivered negligible gains in fuel economy. But GM is giving the hybrid truck another go with the introduction of an eAssist powertrain on the Silverado and Sierra. The eAssist system comprises of a small electric motor (13 horsepower and 44 pound-feet of torque) and 0.45-kWh battery pack. This is paired with the 5.3L V8. Power figures stand at 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque (no increase in horsepower, but an increase of 3 pound-feet). The system only adds an additional 100 pounds to the overal…

Automation Alley: Brains over brawn is Michigan's future By Daniel Howes / The Detroit News Comment on this story Send this story to a friend Get Home Delivery With the economic news growing grimmer by the week -- Delphi Corp. in bankruptcy and General Motors Corp. pushing the United Auto Workers for historic concessions, to name two pieces -- is there any hope out there? Several GM executives are being given different positions, including Brent Dewar and Mike Jackson. Here is a link to the entire story from The Auto Channel. I don't know one of these people from the other. Is this a good thing? As part of the changes, a man named Pete Gerosa will get a "special assignment" focusing on the North American turnaround. Gerosa is to "focus on implementing sales and service programs and distribution strategies that are integral to GM’s North American turnaround plan," but how effective can he really be if he plans to retire later this year?

Someone I work with forwarded this link to me. MSN is asking peoples opinions about which manufacturer makes the better vehicle. Surprisingly GM is dominating the survey with 83%. Although the article looks like its more propaganda trying to put Toyota in a positive light boasting how it can do no wrong. I especially like this bit, "Completing the circle, GM's trying to go green while Toyota's making macho." Who in their right mind would consider Toyota macho? Sorry I don't think their ugly ass truck makes them macho, but thats just my opinion I guess. G. David Felt Alternative Fuels & Propulsion writer www.CheersandGears.com GM was in the press earlier this year when it offered to help recover and restore the corvettes from the corvette museum that got damaged in the sinkhole. GM stepped up again when VP Mark Ruess happened to be listening to a radio show on WJR on Wednesday. TORONTO (CP) - The highly regarded factories of General Motors of Canada are in danger of losing their long-standing labour cost advantage over GM's American operations, an executive of the world's largest automaker said Monday. GM Canada's new three-year agreement with the Canadian Auto Workers, ratified by union members during the weekend, "drove some cost where we'd rather it hadn't," said Al Green, vice-president for personnel of GM Canada. GM won non-wage "offsets" - notably a reduction of health-care costs - to the contract's annual pay increases of 1.5, one and one per cent, plus inflation protection, for its 19,000…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com September 17, 2013 It's no secret that General Motors has been keeping a very close eye on Tesla. Back in July, we reported that CEO Dan Akerson created a group to study Tesla and how it could effect GM. Now it seems GM wants to take Tesla on. According to the Reuters and the Wall Street Journal, General Motors is working on a electric vehicle with a 200 Mile range and a pricetag of $30,000. This information came from GM's vice president of global product programs, Doug Parks. This comes on the heels on Tesla's founder and chief executive Elon Musk announcing a compact electric sedan known internally as Gen 3 due in 2016…

http://www.autoweek.com/apps/pbcs.dll/arti...p;rssfeed=rss01 By JAMIE LAREAU, AUTOMOTIVE NEWS "General Motors may build a Buick luxury car that is sized and priced below the LaCrosse. Executives are rethinking GM's U.S. product plans in light of new federal regulations requiring an average fuel economy of 35 mpg by 2020, company insiders say. The small Buick could be one outcome. The vehicle would be based on the Buick Excelle sedan that debuts in China by early next year. "I definitely think there might be a market for a luxury-crafted smaller car for Buick," says a senior GM source. GM would have to resolve where in North America to build the car. Also, exec…

General Motors' European unit "won't provide a single cent" of the aid it might get from the German government. General Motors might be burning its way through cash but it won't get a chance to even singe any bailout money that its European subsidiary might get. Adam Opel has said it will keep any funding it gets from the German government, even as its ailing parent company has revealed it is close to bankruptcy. "We as employees will make our contribution in this difficult time to ensure future investments," said Klaus Franz, deputy supervisory board chairman of GM in Europe said Saturday. "But we won't provide a single cent, which then would be burned from GM." O…

General Motors will not have to face a number of lawsuits and as much as $10 billion in damages over a ignition-switch defect that led to the recall of 2.6 million vehicles. U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Robert Gerber announced yesterday that the bankruptcy shield, which protects new GM from claims originating before its 2009 bankruptcy and restructuring will be upheld. Now this ruling applies to a small number of suits dealing with crashes before July 2009. Most of the suits filed against GM deal with economic losses, such as diminished resale value. Judge Gerber said people claiming economic losses may “assert otherwise viable claims against New GM for any causes of action th…

After reading the following article, it seems like no wonder that Bob Lutz has been so bullish on E-85 ethanol in the press recently, and not too enthusiastic on diesel. Chevy, Apple champion veteran, new acts in 2005 By Michael Paoletta NEW YORK (Billboard) - Chevrolet's two-year-old musically charged "An American Revolution" campaign took on added urgency in 2005, thanks to savvy music licenses and partnerships. General Motors has issued a recall for 3,296 pickups and SUVs for a problem for the ignition switch. The Associated Press reports that the key in the switch can get stuck in the "start" position and then slip to "accessory" if bumped. This is due to the lock gears in the ignition have a larger diameter than the specifications allow. If this happens, this will cause the loss of power assistance to the brakes and steering, along with possibility of no airbag deployment. This seems very familiar to another ignition switch problem on older GM compacts last year. The models affected include, 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2015 GMC Sierra 1500 2015 Chevrolet Silverad…

Far from a showroom, General Motors Corp. invited women only -- and their girlfriends, daughters and moms -- to get behind the wheels of Hummers, Saabs and Saturns at a special marketing event. It was the latest attempt by the automaker to get a key group of consumers behind the wheel of its vehicles and, over time, jump-start sales. You don't hear enough about On-Star anymore. This is still a huge unique selling point for GM (I've heard a number GM buyers say that they'll never buy a car that doesn't have On-Star) and it's only going to get bigger as navigation systems become more common and GM continues to improve On-Star's capabilities. I seriously think this is one of GM's most under-leverged assets. http://www.autoblog.com/2007/04/25/onstar-...car-navigation/

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/05/14/opinion/...agewanted=print May 14, 2006 Editorial No Holds Barred Both sides in the labor battle at America's largest auto parts supplier, Delphi, are trying to ratchet up the pressure. Delphi's management asked a bankruptcy judge to throw out its labor agreements, which would let the company cut wages and benefits steeply. The United Automobile Workers leadership, meanwhile, has asked its 24,000 rank-and-file union members at Delphi to authorize a strike. The country is used to confrontations between entrenched unions and struggling corporations in the Rust Belt, but this one is more significant than the usual fights over who will …

WILMINGTON, Del. -- General Motors shareholders blasted the company's chief executive for raking in huge salaries and bonuses while the automaker has struggled financially, but a proposal to give investors a say on executive pay was soundly defeated today. Shareholders also defeated a proposal under which at least 75 percent of future stock options and restricted stock awards for senior executives would be tied to the company's performance. John Lauve of Holly, Mich., who sponsored the proposal on performance pay, said GM's market share, stock price and credit rating have decreased in recent years, but management and directors have not been held accountable. So cruzing through the media.gm.com web site, I saw this update on the Chevy AppShop story which shows that GM has now signed Apple and Google to make the connection so that GM auto's will have a touch screen and you can choose to have the Apple Interface with Apple App Store or an Andriod Interface with Google Play store for your in Auto Touch screen Navigation with constant updates and apps. I am very excited still and while sad that it has been delayed from this fall to next year, I think this will be a superior way for GM to go as the existing DVD nav system get outdated to fast. http://media.gm.com/media/us/en/gm/news.detail.html/content/Pages/news/us/en/2014…

General Motors' problems with the 1.6 million vehicle recall over a faulty ignition switch are growing. This week, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has sent a 27 page document with 107 questions asking about the recall and the timeline. Questions range from how the investigation process on the ignition "was not as robust as it should have been" to when GM decided to start investigating crashes with the 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt and 2007 Pontiac G5 where the air bag did not deploy. NHTSA has also requested documents ranging from complaints from owners to lawsuits involving GM vehicles in the recall. "We are a data-driven organization, and we w…

YEP...Penske wants to buy Saturn....to sell Renault Samsung cars at Saturn dealers !...who is renault samsung ???...: Samsung Motors (also known as SMI) was built on the will of the Samsung group's chairman, Kun Hee Lee, who regarded the automotive industry as a sum of many industries. Nevertheless, his plan was cut short by the Asian financial crisis, and soon after its establishment, the group jettisoned SMI, together with other non-core subsidiaries. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com December 19, 2012 General Motors announced today that they will be buying back 200 million shares of stock from the U.S. Treasury. The buyback will cost GM about $27.50 per share - about $5.5 billion in total. GM says the $27.50 share price represents a 7.9% premium over the closing price on December 18. The share buyback is expected to close by the end of December. After this buyback, the Treasury will still hold close to 300 million shares of the automaker's stock – roughly equal to a 19% stake. Treasury officials say they will begin to sell off the rest of their shares as early as next month, "through various means a…

By Kevin Krolicki DETROIT, Oct 26 (Reuters) - General Motors Corp and Chrysler LLC's owners are discussing a merger that would keep some of Chrysler's operations intact and save jobs with the aim of securing U.S. government financial aid the high-stakes deal would require, people familiar with the talks said on Sunday. A merger under these terms would give control to GM but leave Chrysler's owner, Cerberus Capital Management, with stake of less than 10 percent in the combined company, according to the sources who were not authorized to discuss the talks publicly. Such a merger would shake up the U.S. industrial landscape and create an automaker with about a third of…
