I challenge anyone to point out the major, significant flaw in Flints analysis! Well maybe it is not so much a challenge but an obvious oversight by Mr. Flint. For someone that claims to follow automotive since the Truman Administrations, he has not been reading GM's PRs of late. Enjoy! http://www.forbes.com/home/columnists/2007...FTOKEN=14966281

Reuters Story - Hamburg Germany Diesel ban Seems that Hamburg has taken it upon themselves to address cleaner air, reduced acid rain and better quality of life by banning ALL DIESEL Auto's that DO NOT meet the Euro 6 diesel certification from their streets. With the Euro courts having ruled that cities do have the rights to ban polluting dirty auto's, Hamburg went to work on creating new signage and for the last few days been putting up the new signage as the ban goes into effect Monday May 28th. This has even bigger implications as Hamburg has asked the courts to rule in regards to allowing cities to ban all auto's that do not meet the Euro 6 standard fro…

Okay, we all know that deal with soot, emissions, etc. and that GM's european diesel's can't just be shipped & installed in their US models. That being said, I can't help but be intrigued that GM couldn't get something ready for a US model. With that thought in mind, I went exploring @ the Great Britain Vauxhall showroom. I was looking at the Astra (about the equivalient in size to our Cobalt). One of the engines is the 1.3lcdti. It's output is 88hp &147ft-lbs -- which would make it a comfortable & capable commuter engine. It's efficiency is measured at 45.6 & 70.6 (kilometers per litre). As you can see by the mileage…

Diesels challenge hybrids Poll shows consumer interest in diesel engines is rising while buyers considering hybrids are down Christine Tierney | Link to Original Article @ The Detroit News Enthusiasm for gas-electric hybrid vehicles dipped among prospective car buyers during the past year, while interest in new, cleaner diesels was rising, according to a survey issued Monday. The poll conducted by J.D. Power and Associates found that 50 percent of prospective car buyers are considering a hybrid, down from 57 percent a year earlier. "In the 2006 study, we found consumers often overestimated the fuel-efficiency of hybrid electric vehicles, and the decrease in considera…

Stumbled across this story on the BBC that shows that 4 major cities will have a ban on all diesel auto's and Trucks by 2025. http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-38170794 Paris Mexico City Madrid Athens These four cities are implementing complete bans on Diesel to improve air quality. Campaigners are pushing to have London Diesel free also by 2025. Very interesting read, plus I see they are converting more roads into bicycle lanes only. Diesels to take on hybrids as king of green in US

DETROIT: Record-high prices at US pumps are giving hybrid cars a further image boost as the king of fuel economy, but many automakers are stepping up work on another major alternative to cut fuel consumption: diesel engines. Long seen as a powerful but smog-forming drivetrain reserved for big trucks and buses, diesels are slowly gaining legitimacy in the world’s biggest car market, where many Americans drive large sport utility vehicles and pickup trucks for personal use. “Diesel is a no-brainer for pickup trucks — they’re bullet proof, run forever and get great mileage,” said Thad Malesh, principal of California-based research firm Automotive Technologies Research Gr…

Just how slippery is the Lightyear 0 EV? Try a confirmed 0.175 coefficient of drag (Cd) for this solar assisted electric car with testing having been done by FKFS wind tunnels in Stuttgart, Germany, under WLTP protocols. I know, I know, how much more aerodynamic is this than others and here is the top 3 cars till today. Lucid Air, Tesla Model S and Mercedes-Benz EQS have all come in at 0.20 to 0.21 meaning the Lightyear 0 is slippery. Even GMs EV1 which only had 1,117 leased to customers in California had a Cd of 0.195. Initial first year run is 946 EVs with a reserve cost of $250,000 euros. Car dealers have more cars in stock as of December since the spring of 2021. The metric car dealers use to measure their supplies is "days of inventory". This measures how long it would take to sell a new car at today's sales price. The age-old industry guideline is 60 days on a car lot. According to Cox Automotive, the average dealer has a 71-day supply. When you have an oversupply, prices start to lower. KBB states that the average for new car prices dropped from November 2022 to November 2023. It's the third straight month with year-over-year pricing decreasing. Due to anticipation of a union strike, automakers stocked up on cars during the summer. When the …

To say that 2025 is business as usual is an understatement in that it is anything but usual. As the new administration attempts to destroy society moving forward with Electric Vehicles and return to a 1970's or 60's way of thinking with inefficient ICE or internal combustion engines this begs the question: How are EVs doing in the marketplace right now? According to ARENAEV.COM website dedicated to tracking sales globally, EV sales globally are expected to increase by 30% at a time that the industry is expecting a contraction in ICE sales of less than 1% for 2025. Specific to regions, the industry is looking to sales to be as f…

Automakers are trying to achieve price parity between EV and ICE vehicles. This is a key objective so EVs become more attainable to buy. Price parity would help consumers who are interested in EVs. Kelly Blue Book's (KBB) November average transaction price data for new vehicles shows that we are moving slightly in the right direction. In 2024, certain EVs will lose the federal tax credit. The industry average transaction price (ATP) for every type of vehicle was $48,247. The new EV average transaction price (ATP) was $52,345, or 8.5% more expensive. November had the highest incentive for EVs at 8.9% of the average transaction price (ATP). Last year, EV incentives wer…

Cummins Inc., the manufacturer of diesel engines, has reached an agreement with the United States and the State of California. The $1.675 billion settlement would be the largest penalty for Clean Air Act Violations. Hundreds of thousands of engines were found with an emission-cheating defeat device. There were 630,000 defeat devices from 2013 to 2019 RAM 2500 and 3500 trucks. The Clean Air Act requires automakers and engine manufacturers to comply with emission limits. Defeat devices can be hardware or software, which can modify emission tests. Attorney General Merrick B. Garland from The Justice Department issued the following statement: “The Justice Departmen…

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) created a rule last year to help consumers against unfair practices and fees. Known as the Combating Auto Retail Scams (CARS), this was supposed to take effect on July 30th, 2024. Now, lobbyists were able to get this paused indefinitely. This new development of CARS was fought by the National Automotive Dealers Association (NADA) and the Texas Automobile Dealers Association. They filed a petition with the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals and challenged the law. The Court agreed with NADA and the Texas Automobile Association to stop CARS from happening. One of the biggest issues with this legal battle concerns if the FTC has the…

When thinking about making vehicles greener, most people think about how green a vehicle is; they typically think about fuel economy or the shift toward electric propulsion. But there are plenty of other petroleum products in vehicles, the largest being the tires on all 4 corners. Goodyear Tire announced last week that they have developed a demonstration concept tire that is made of 90% sustainable materials, and most importantly, it has already passed all regulatory testing. This demonstration concept is part of Goodyear’s quest to make a tire from 100% sustainable material by 2030. The company first debuted a 70% sustainable tire in January 2022 that …

House Republicans, lead by Sam Graves, Republican for Montana and head of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee are proposing a $250 annual charge for electric vehicles as part of an effort to shore up funding for the national highway system and other transportation projects. Graves stated that with the increase in electric, hybrid and just overall efficiency in internal combustion automobiles that the federal tax collected per mile traveled has dropped, making it a challenge to keep the Federal Highway Administration funded. With the new fees, Republicans hope to raise $50 billion in new funding over the next 10 years. The additional money would go to pay…

The United States and United Kingdom have reached a deal on vehicle import tariffs into the U.S. that could serve as a model for future deals between the U.S. and other countries. As part of a larger trade deal, the UK will get preferential treatment on auto tariffs for the first 100,000 vehicles imported. Import tariffs, which started on April 3rd for UK vehicles, are currently at 25-percent and will be reduced to 10-percent on that first 100,000 units annually. The U.K. conversely agreed to lower its tariffs from 5.1-percent to 1.8-percent. The U.S. also dropped tariffs on U.K. steel. While 10-percent on vehicles is still four times t…

Automakers have been struggling since 2020 to launch their new vehicles on time. Shifts to creating electric vehicles and the COVID-19 pandemic created large supply chain issues. These issues have increased delays for new vehicles to be launched. PwC Consulting discovered in a report that 34% of vehicle launches 2023 had production delays. An additional 21% of delays were "due to other factors". PwC did a calculation of production delays with issues such as quality standards, supply chain issues, and workforce situations. They compared actual to planned production dates. Within this analysis, automaker delays can cost them around $200 million annually. Compare …

Galileo Signals End of Liberty in Europe The first signals received from the oncoming swarm of Galileo satellites signal the end of liberty in Europe. Galileo offers consumers the promise of better and cheaper satellite navigation - this is how those behind the multi-billion (insert currency of choice) project sell it to the public. Do Five-Star Ratings Really Mean a Safer Ride? Part of shopping for a car is, or should be, checking out the crash-test scores for the vehicle you have in mind. But do those government "star" ratings or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's "poor" to "good" rankings indicate anything meaningful about how you'll fare in a real-world collision? A new study suggests the answer is yes, but only for cars, not sport-utility vehicles and pickup trucks. David Harless and George Hoffer, economics professors at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Business, took a look at the relationship between the crash-test scores of various vehicles going back more than 20 y…

In reading the write up at electrek, this got me to thinking about the current state of Li-ion batteries where China controls the world Li-ion supply by owning 75%. As such all major battery production companies produce a heavy amount of their batteries in China and ship across the world. The current 46th administration of the US has committed $400 billion to buying / using US made batteries in a wide range of products, auto's military, etc. and part of this is to spur investment by US tech startups to drive forward aggressively in moving into solid state battery packs that use various minerals that are not controlled by China. Don't force radical shift on crash tests The Detroit auto show is always a time to talk about vehicle safety and examine the improvements in cars and trucks. And no one does that better than the manufacturers. Of course, that doesn't stop many from chiming in with non-productive ideas, including federal administrators. Transportation Secretary Mary Peters did just that on Monday when she toured the North American International Auto Show here in Detroit. She said the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) would begin changing its New Car Assessment Program, which is the government's "star system" for rating vehicle safety. The Ram 1500, a long-standing high-selling pickup truck in the US, has a safety track record that "has long been unimpressive," said 24/7 Wall St., noting poor crash testing results. It also scored a poor 2/5 from JD Power's Initial Quality Study. In second place was the Chevr…

The mention of this in the ELR thread got me thinking about the topic. Recently, google was licensed to operate their driverless cars on public highways in California. At least, that's the gist of what I heard a short while ago on the radio in the form of a news report. This raises all sorts of questions, and fears. The way I see it, those fears are somewhat unfounded. Yes, those pursuing this technology like to daydream about magically eliminating traffic jams and accidents in a world without human drivers. But things are unlikely to work out that way. Resistance will come from all quarters (and with good reason), it would be a long and bloody battle to enforce this vi…

The Camaro Convertible SS should do 0-60 mph in about 4.1 seconds. If you get sick of all the noise (why would you?), the cabin remains impressively quiet for a convertible with the top up." Once one of the world's richest cities, emirate now can't pay its bills DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - Just a year after the global downturn derailed Dubai's explosive growth, the city is now so swamped in debt that it's asking for a six-month reprieve on paying its bills — causing a drop on world markets Thursday and raising questions about Dubai's reputation as a magnet for international investment. The fallout came swiftly and was felt globally after Wednesday's statement that Dubai's main development engine, Dubai World, would ask creditors for a "standstill" on paying back its $60 billion debt until at least May. The company's real estate arm, Nakheel — whose projec…

The Ohio State University took up a big challenge, how to replace a core component in tire manufacturing, Carbon Black! This important component of tire manufacturing was in surplus up till 10 years ago when the Chinese market for auto's took off. A reason tire prices have increased is due to a dwindling supply of carbon black. The Ohio State University took on this challenge to find a replacement that would accomplish 3 things: sustainability, reduced foreign oil and reduction of waste from landfills. Their…

I can’t believe I’m saying this but, This thing actually seems usable and well done as far as capabilities go. It doesn’t have the highest towing ability but 5000 pounds isn’t too shabby. 2000 pound payload is better than most half tons available. On board power pretty much does away with range anxiety. I could see people actually wanting this if the price is reasonable. http://news.pickuptrucks.com/2017/05/2018-workhorse-w-15-review-first-look-and-drive.html

Zaiser Motors of Colorado has shown off their Cruiser version of an electric motorcycle in AWD/RWD form. The basic design is a 300 mile range motorcycle that can reach 60mph in 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 120 mph. Looking at the history of motorcycle startups as well as established companies like Harley Davidson with their livewire bike that only has 90 miles of range, the obvious question is how do they get such a long range on a bike? The answer is in-wheel hub motors. Yes, there has been much written about the pro's and cons of in-wheel hub motors. Pro, you no longer have the drive chains/belts and other consumable parts that require maintenan…

As if the auto industry isn't already burdened to the breaking point and beyond, it appears the EPA will be directed to allow states to set their own emissions standards for motor vehicles. So we will then have the potential for FIFTY DIFFERENT STANDARDS. How does this even remotely make any sense? By their very definition, motor vehicles are made to TRAVEL. If I buy a car in PA, and I travel to CA, what then? Will I be fined? What about dealerships near state borders? What about commuters who travel daily to neighboring states? What about used cars? Can they not be sold out of state? Not to mention prevailing winds... "OMG we will sue Ohio because their emissio…

When times were good, Detroit's Big Three minted cash with big gas guzzlers and protested fuel-efficiency mandates. Now gas prices are soaring, customers are turning their backs and efforts to retool may be too little, too late. By Ernest Beck, MSN Money The news from Detroit just gets grimmer. With gas prices soaring, sales of fuel-guzzling SUVs and trucks are plummeting. The Big Three that once ruled the industry -- General Motors, Ford and Chrysler -- are cutting costs, shuttering plants and laying off workers. GM's share price is hovering near its lowest point in half a century; the company announced a whopping $15.5 billion loss in the second quarter of 2008. …

I mean tell me the last time that any automags reflected a consist positive opinion about any domestic vehicle with in the last 10-15 years. Wall Street Journal Europeans Go to U.S. Dealers To Buy Cars From Home By EDWARD TAYLOR June 12, 2008; Page B1 The weak dollar is drawing a new group of Europeans to shop in the U.S. -- for European cars. More Europeans are turning to the U.S. to buy luxury cars, from Porsche 911s to Volvo 4x4s, and then shipping them back home. The cheap dollar and competitive pricing in the slow U.S. market can yield savings of as much as 30% of the cost of similar models in Europe, even after costs of transporting the cars and complying with different emissions standards. Because cash-strapped Americans are shunning car showrooms, new clients should be good news for U.S. …

Jesse Snyder Automotive News July 28, 2008 - 12:01 am ET Plunging Toyota sales paced a dreary June for Europe. All mass-market auto groups lost volume in 28 European markets last month as sales fell 7.9 percent to 1.43 million passenger vehicles, said ACEA, the European automakers association. June results pushed Europe's first-half sales to a 2.0 percent decline, to 8.34 million units. But the Toyota brand's 17.7 percent decline in June, coupled with an even steeper 25.6 percent loss at Toyota Motor Corp.'s Lexus luxury brand, was the worst result for the month. For the first six months, Toyota Motor was the only automaker with a double-digit loss in Europe…

It’s more than capable of tilting heavily from side to side and bucking from fore to aft in a manner rarely seen on a modern-day four-door. After driving the new Lincoln MKX, Ezra Dyer just seems to have gotten mad: "The MKX faces the same challenging family dynamic as all current Lincolns, in that it’s a first cousin of a Ford—in this case, the Edge. And if the Ford version is great, then why not just buy the Ford?" "People don’t buy a Lexus ES350 because it’s so much better than a Toyota Avalon. FCA had to buy that many greenhouse-gas emissions credits from greener automakers, Reuters says, citing a report from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Because its vehicles' collective fuel economy continues to trail the industry average, FCA purchased the emissions credits at of the end of 2014 in order to meet US emissions regulations. About two-thirds of those credits were acquired from Toyota, while the rest were purchased from Tesla and Honda. Daimler and Ferrar…
