Automotive News July 30, 2007 - 12:01 am As legislators, regulators and automakers look for ways to improve fuel economy, they must remember that consumers will make the ultimate choices. And that's going to cause a few surprises. One example: Consumers are bidding up the prices of used cars and trucks equipped with fuel-saving diesel engines. That contradicts conventional wisdom, which holds that Americans gave up on diesels in the 1980s. Some environmentalists turn up their noses at diesel engines, but technological advances have made diesels more palatable to U.S. consumers. The Power Information Network estimates that U.S. consumers will buy more than 500,00…

I know there are lots of Pennsylvania forumers here, so I thought I would share this neat promotional video of Philadelphia & surrounding areas from around 1951. Pre-offshoring,pre-drive thru, and mostly pre-suburbia, this is an interesting blast from the past. Little did they know that the mighty Bethlehem Steel would be nothing more than a memory in 45 years.

So it occurred to me that I never told you guys about my new job. If you hadn't been watching last season, I lost my job with Direct Energy in 2019, my last day was December 18th. I was told at the beginning of November that it was coming, just didn't have an exact date. Direct Energy paid me a healthy severance of 7 months of salary, plus bonus, plus a medical stipend. After 13 years, I was ready to go and I can't be mad at them for laying me off. In the ensuing months, Direct Energy laid off another 6,000 in June and then another 7,000 in August. They've also been sold out to a competitor. So I think I got out just in time. My initial plan when I found …

So, I just found out today that my beloved 5500 and 7500 GMCs were replaced with 2 3500 dodge rams with the ISB cummins in them. I'm really confused how trucks that had GCVWRs of 26,000 and 36,000 lbs can be towed now by 3500 pickup.... and a Dodge too! Why not get a GM or a Ford truck... hummm anybody know anything about the big dodge, i read that they can only tow up to 19500 so thats why im worried, i think our big trailer is over 19500.

Do the 1988-up Regals 2-doors last awhile? I know its FWD and everything but there is one sitting at Orangeville Motors behind some trees. I saw it but never asked how much. It looks in alright shape. I just dont know how reliable they are. If it is the right price and reliable I may just pick it up.

In early August my girlfriend and I will be driving to Florida. Along the way we will be passing through Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia. We'll be heading through Alabama on the way back since we're going to stop and visit her niece near Huntsville. I've been to all mentioned except the deep south states like Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi, so it should be a fun trip. How inundated was Nashville with water? I was thinking that would be a great halfway point, but if it was anything like the flooding we had here two years ago, we'll probably stay somewhere else instead. I want to check out Atlanta, but I don't really know what there is to see o…

"I'm going through change-ehh-es... I'm going through change-ehh-eess" Sing, Ozzy, sing. Anyhow... nothing like a little Black Sabbath to announce changes. As you may remember, I moved to Michigan in the spring for various photography endeavors. It was a fairly substantial change of pace for me and a real opportunity do something with one of my hobbies. It was something I had only dreamed of tackling up to that point. To say the least, I certainly won't regret what transpired this summer, especially the bittersweet ending. However, the experience was mired by a sour agreement before I was even able to begin. Going back, I arrived with an overwhelming nervous…

Anyone remember this? http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=85...b+Suite&pl=true I thought of this and it could be an idea for a Camaro intro ad... First show a tagline: "After many years of waiting, there's something that the Chevrolet family is so happy they're dancing..." Then show a stream of Cobalt SS, Malibus, Impalas and Corvettes enter the scene doing the stunt ballets. After dancing for a short while, a covered carrier truck arrives. Camera zooms into the container, and zooming into the light fading into the Camaro sitting inside, zooming into the smooth body lines and slowly getting brighter. While visiting with the owner of my local Chevy Dealer, the subject of GM's future came up. He stated that with 40% of GM dealers being closed, it will be impossible for GM not to file for BK. He stated that GM could not get enough government cash, and doesn't have enough lawyers to cover all of the potential law suits. At the end of the conversation i was in agreement with him regarding this matter. Any thoughts on this?

Been a while since I've been online.... But, what a summer it has been! Lots of gatherings of all sorts...with a road trip in the mix...and more to come YET this YEAR! From Friday, August 8, to Tuesday, August 12, I traveled through 8 states in 5 days...and met up with friends and family along the way. I rented a Dodge Charger, even after the original rental place had no cars available despite my reservation. The Dodge Charger was a pleasure to drive...on the road trip. I guess the engineers nowadays are really up to something. If you look under the hood of the Civic, you'd notice there is absolutely NO space for any kind of work. This leads to strange engine layouts The other day when me and my friends were holding a car wash fest, the guy with a Civic Si was changing his headlight bulbs to the white ones. Interesting enough, you have to take out the whole coolant tank to reach the bulbs. I accidently picked it up, and coolant was leaking from it. I started hearing cursing and foul language. In short, you had to unlatch the battery, and remove the coolant tank for you to get to the bulbs. Car engineers these days... Or should I …

August and Frederik Duesenberg, 1920s (article by the Des Moines Register) Two of the world's finest car builders got their start in Iowa. Cars adorned with the Duesenberg name were known for speed, style and luxury. Frederick Duesenberg was born in Germany in 1876, and August Duesenberg was born there in 1878. They arrived in the United States in 1885. Their widowed mother emigrated with them and four of their siblings. An older brother had already arrived and welcomed his family to a farm at Rockford. By the late 1890s, the brothers were skilled mechanics, operating bicycle-and-motorcycle shops, Fred in Rockford and "Augie" in Garner. They moved to Des Moines about…

I'm inquiring about two 2009 GM-issued calendars that dealers receive (or buy?) and distribute to their customers: 2009 GM Muscle Cars 2009 GM Classic Cars & Trucks I've tried a bunch of my local dealers to see if they had either calendar to give me with no luck (one dealer said that "GM stopped doing them over a decade ago" ). I thought you guys might enjoy this one.... A guy met an older woman in a bar. They drank and flirted and he decided she was pretty hot for a fifty-five-year-old. As they exchanged a passionate kiss, she whispered in his ear: "Have you ever had a mother and daughter together?" "No" he answered. "But it's something I've always fantasized about" "Well, tonight could just be your lucky night." she said, knocking back another double vodka. Scarcely able to contain himself, he went back to her place. She turned the key in the door, put the hall light on and shouted upstairs: "Mom, you still awake?"

Cadillac's Fabulous V-16s by Bill Vance The Cadillac V-16 was conceived in what were seen as the best of times, the Roaring Twenties. Alas, by the time it went on sale it was the worst of times, the Depression of the thirties brought on by the October 1929 collapse of the stock market. In spite of the bad times, however, the introduction of a 16- cylinder engine vaulted Cadillac into the front ranks of prestige automobiles. There were private showings in December 1929, followed by its public presentation at the New York Auto Show in January 1930. Such American marques as Packard, Franklin, Marmon, Lincoln and Pierce-Arrow would respond with large, multi-cylinder e…

WASHINGTON - A huge federal study in people — not rats — takes the fizz out of arguments that the diet soda sweetener aspartame might raise the risk of cancer. No increased risk was seen even among people who gulped down many artificially sweetened drinks a day, said researchers who studied the diets of more than half a million older Americans. A consumer group praised the study, done by reputable researchers independent of any funding or ties to industry groups. "It goes a fair way toward allaying concerns about aspartame," said Michael Jacobson, head of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, which had urged the government to review the sweetener's safety afte…

Here are some photos of a couple of product lines that were taken (not by me) in an Australian auto parts store. I thought you guys would appreciate the honesty and humor that went into the selection of the product names.

It is a little early to come out of hibernation, yes, but there are still some interesting vehicles out there. Post your unusual and cool vehicle sightings here in this thread. Old or new, anything out of the ordinary!

J.C. Whitney Look: "When something looks added on to the car, it looks out of place, it looks like an afterthought." (Ralph Gilles, DaimlerChrysler) Puffilate: "When we sit there and review a surface and we think it's too hollow or flat, we say we have to puffilate that." (Ralph Gilles) Unobtainium: "A designer type of material you can shape in any way or fashion. It has virtually no cost, and it really helps us to get our designs forward. However, the engineers just despise that." I can't remember who all here is in the auto sales business, but I believe Carbiz is? Anyway, I am looking at a 2001 Lincoln LS V8 that goes for about $8870 according to Kelly Blue Book. However, most of the same year / features / similar mileage that I've seen are between $7900 and $8500 (the $7900 is a private seller). The salesman that I am going through at a local F-L-M dealership is asking $8700, which my uncle (who owns a used car business and goes to auto auctions all the time) says is on the high side. He also says that KBB values are usually overinflated. My question is, what size profit margin would the dealer be expecting on this car? I realize they ca…

For your parts that fit my Chrysler. The HVAC knobs are custom made using the center parts from the Intrepid knobs housed inside the rubber/chrome ring from a GMC Acadia. The stereo knob, which just arrived today, is from a 2013 Sonic. This was kind of a PITA because apparently GM doesn't sell just the knobs so I had to buy the whole stereo. Bright side is that this is the brick stereo out of the super stripper fleet model, so they're dirt cheap used. She gets a little more classy every day. <3

Does anyone know of a site that has the dimensions of the cargo area listed in inches x inches x inches rather than cubic inches? Rather than just having a figure for cubic inches, I want something that tells me what the minimum width between the two sides of the cargo area are, as well as length and heighth.

Finally got all of the parts I got from All You Can Carry Day (this past Halloween) out and lined up. Here they be: I'm two door panels and a speaker grill short of a complete taupe interior. Nice thing is that the center console has the second AUX power port which I plan to hook up. So much better than the hard to get to one next to the ash tray. I' got a newer style auto dimming mirror, the AutoStick shifter mechanism, a clock, and an OTIC or whatever we seem to call them. I'm calling them that because that's what the manual calls them but I digress. I'm kinda disappointed with the interior color. I thought taupe would be closer to tan than gray. It isn't. Yes…

Basically right now it lets you show off your car, in the same manner CarDomain or CarSpace would, but in facebook. A LOT of new features are coming, including rating your car and a buy&sell. The ratings will be particularly interesting because you'll be able to see a list of people with the most popular cars in your network, your geographical location, and so on. Suggestions for improvements are welcome. Pretty much anything is possible if you can name it... it can be added. *A lot of Classic cars are on the way for "favorites"* So far we have planned to add the following in the next week or two: > Buy & Sell > Rate my car > Top rated cars …

If one of the speakers on your home theater system stops working, don't: -Disconnect all 30 wires attached to it... -Take the whole system apart to find nothing wrong... -Turn the receiver off and on repeatedly... -Curse at and hit the receiver several times... -Search on Google futilely to find a solution to the problem only to find nothing... -Curse at and hit the receiver several times again... ...when all you needed to do was cut off the old bare wire at each end of the speaker wire and strip and connect new bare wire.
