Detroit show preview: Mercedes-Benz GL450; big GL in a class all by itself GREG KABLE Posted Date: 12/8/05 Big, bold and brassy—that’s the best way to describe the new American-built Mercedes-Benz GL-Class, revealed here officially for the first time prior to its first public outing at next month’s North American International Auto Show. The luxuriously-equipped four-wheel drive goes into production as the third all-new model from Mercedes’ plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and goes on sale across North America in April. Unlike the vault-like, truck-based, G-Class (aka Gelaendewagen), GL-Class uses car-like unibody construction to keep weight in check and to allo…

TOKYO — Lexus is ready to spring the next development in the compact IS story, according to sources in Japan. North America has already welcomed the impressive new 2006 IS 250 and IS 350 sport sedans. But at January's Detroit show, Lexus will unveil a concept teaser pointing to a sleek and different new IS coupe/cabrio, sources say. A successor to the U.S.-designed LF-C concept displayed at the 2004 New York Auto Show, the Detroit 2006 IS concept is much closer to production, it's said, and points to what will be appearing in U.S. showrooms in August 2007. Complete with power-operated top, the Detroit car reportedly packs a 5.0-liter V8 with 450-hp out…

Dodge Reprises Another Classic With 2006 Challenger Concept Date posted: 01-04-2006 AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — Dodge designers say they drew on the 1970s model for inspiration but stretched the new 2006 Challenger concept and made it a "genuine four-passenger car." The rear-wheel-drive Challenger concept sits on a 116-inch wheelbase, 6 inches longer and 2 inches wider than the original. Dodge resurrects the original Challenger "performance hood" and its twin diagonal scoops — now with functional butterfly-valve intakes — on the new concept. The front end features the signature Dodge crossbar grille and four deeply recessed headlamps. In the rear are twin-rectangle dual…

Linkity Hyundai Genesis and Ford F150 Win the NA COTY and TOTY Like an automotive continuation of the BCS bowls, winners were crowned for the 16th North American Car of the Year and North American Truck of the Year awards at the Detroit Auto Show this morning. Voted on by 50 automotive journalists in various media from the U.S. and Canada (where's Mexico?), winners took home a bit of brand polish and a big lump of crystal. The award selects "the most outstanding vehicles of the year based on factors that include innovation, design, safety, handling, driver satisfaction and value for the dollar." For a shot at the title, eligible vehicles must be "all-n…

Link GM will be showing 4 concept cars along with 8 world premieres at the show. I'm not sure what exactly is debuting, but we did hear a while back that there would be a Chevy concept that shows off the future styling direction for Chevy. Apparantly the new Aveo is making it's European debut, and the Astra TwinTop will be there as well. I'm still not sure what else is debuting though.

For GM, auto show is all about brands Splashy exhibit, part of turnaround plan, will clearly differentiate automaker's lines. Josee Valcourt / The Detroit News When General Motors Corp. showcases its eight brands at the 2006 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, it hopes to send an unequivocal message: They're distinctive. GM is making a renewed effort to use the show as part of an ongoing plan to clearly differentiate its brands by eliminating overlapping products and fine-tuning the model lineup at several divisions, such as Buick and Pontiac. Saab, Hummer, GMC, Chevrolet and others will be separated by a single aisle in an all-new, 120,000-sq…

Page 10 in Hemmings said there will be dueling concepts at the NAIAS, the Challenger and the Camaro. Even after all the internet hype and inside info I wasnt convinced, I would still feel better if GM had made an official announcement but I hear maybe after the New Year due to that Canada mess. I dont care about retro, I just want at least the GTOs performance IRS and some sick styling. I really liked the leaked pictures. So it looks like many of us will get our wish soon and maybe GM will get some much needed positive press.

First of all, I'm sorry to say I have no pictures. I went with a friend of mine and it was pushing his attention span as it was, and I didn't want to try his patience waiting to get that perfect angle. However, I saw a decent amount of metal so I'll write up my text impressions here: Ford Fiesta: I was never too agog over the Fiesta, but it was nice to see one in person. The sedan was quite ungainly I think; it was definitely not designed with a notchback in mind, much like the Versa. A jellybean with creases. The hatch was also present, in Top Gear mini-mall green, which looked much more cohesive. The interior looked fine, but I'm still not sure why this car generated s…

So Thursday 68 called me up and asked me if I wanted to go to Kimball's, it was the 2nd last one of the season. Since I've only been to one car show this year and it was tiny I gladly went. I'd only been to Kimball's once and it had been "canceled" due to bad weather that never happened, so there were only a few cars. This time was much different. I took lots of photos, so you've been warned!

December 23, 2005 Lots to ogle in L.A. and Detroit By Tony Whitney The holiday season will have barely finished before the 2006 auto show season begins in early January. At the Los Angeles auto show, vehicles will be unveiled to the media on January 6th, while in Detroit, media unveilings will begin on January 8th 2006. CanadianDriver will have daily coverage beginning on January 6th. The proximity of the two shows has always been a bit of a conflict, so L.A. show organizers have decided to switch to November/December dates in 2006. That means there are two L.A. shows in 2006, one early in the year and one later on. For 2007, there's just one L.A. show in l…

In 2006, there will be TWO L.A. Int'l Auto Shows.....the one in January, '06 that typically competes with Detroit.....and the L.A. show in November, '06 (which will preview '07) which is representative of the decision by L.A. show executives not to interfere with Detroit in January. The new November timing will be permanent for the L.A. show. My question is....knowing that Detroit, L.A., Chicago, and N.Y are the four largest auto shows in the country, how will L.A.'s move to November affect the rollout of new concepts and production cars for the coming year? Will most of the major manufacturers still wait until January and the NAIAS to showcase ever…

Show Reflects Diversity of L.A. Auto Market Posted on 1/3/06 3:30 p.m. CST Advertisements hyping this year's Greater Los Angeles Auto Show feature two cars: the $1.2 million, 1,001-horsepower Bugatti Veyron supercar and the Honda Civic Hybrid — a seemingly disparate pair of rides that, collectively, sum up the quintessential and often fantastical L.A. driving experience. The show's general manager Andy Fuzesi noted that Southern California itself represents the market's extremes, as the largest market both for exotic cars and hybrids. The 2006 Veyron will make its North American debut at the show, which will be open for media and industry previews Ja…

Lineup lighter for Chicago show For second year in Second City, event is less eventful Rick Kranz Automotive News -- February 8, 2010 - 12:01 am ET For the second straight year, the Chicago Auto Show will suffer the effects of a tough economy and scaled-back spending. Chicago has never had every automaker, but some noticeable names are missing this year. Hyundai, Volkswagen, Nissan and Chrysler Group will not have press conferences or debuts. But Toyota, Ford and Chevrolet are expected to use Chicago to roll out several updates of current models that will land in dealerships in the coming months. Most recent post includes renderings of some of the displays: GM, Honda, Infinity, etc. Look forward to hearing what you all have to say as I plan o…

Hey everyone, for my 16th birthday my parents just surprised me today that they are taking me to detroit for the NAIAS. Every year we got to a local show like Philly and i just wanted to ask some questions to others who have been to the Detroit show before. Are there cars on the floors and open that you can sit in? How crowded does it get on public days? Any other feedback of the show would be great. Thanks guys.

This past week was the New England International Auto show at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center. Yesterday Myself, my girlfriend, Sixty8, and his daughter spent the day touring the various displays. This year was bigger and better than the last time I went (two years ago), with more cars, a custom section, and a classic section featuring among other things, a Stanley Steamer and a Duesenberg Model J. Sixty8, not surprisingly, spent most of the time around the classics, while my girlfriend watched his daughter and waited in line with Sixty8 and his daughter so she could play Gran Turismo in some floating Subaru thing. Meanwhile I went and checked out the new …

Anyone going? Turns out, my vacation to the New Hope area is on those same dates. I had completely forgotten about it until the owner of the B&B we're staying at asked if we liked classic cars. So we'll be there.

Inspired by the adidas sports brand, they infused this carefree lifestyle into interior and exterior design and materials. We're pleased to announce that one of the premiere vehicles to be featured at THE NEW YORK AUTOFEST Invitational will be the famed 1909 ALCO-6, the "Black Beast." Lovingly restored by Howard Kroplick right here on Long Island where it won the famed 1909 and 1910 Venderbilt Cup Races. It then went on in 1911 to race in the first Indianapolis 500. Spectators will also get a chance to see the ALCO-6 in action. The 2010 NY AutoFest (www.nyautofest.com) will feature a special invitational section of exceptional, historic, and rare vehicles.

We've just added another vehicle to the New York AutoFest3 Invitational on July 18, 2010 in Hicksville, NY. Come see Robert Luczun's "Car-Toons," a 1928 Ford Model AR Roadster Pickup covered in a century of pop culture icons. A rolling history of the comic art form, with airbrushed renderings ranging from The Yellow Kid (first published in 1896) to today's South Park characters. Luczun spent more than 2,000 hours-over a year and a half-painting the truck. "Cartoons appeal to all of us, no matter what age," says Luczun. "Our first instinct when we see figures like Snow White or the Jolly Green Giant is to touch them-see that they are real. Kids are going to want to touc…

General Motors There's no holiday break for the folks at GM — they have much too much going on with the Los Angeles and Detroit auto shows around the corner. Their all-new sport-utes based on the GMT-900 platform will show up at the Los Angeles show in the form of a Chevrolet Suburban and a GMC Yukon XL. Joining the Suburban in L.A. will be the high-performance Pontiac Solstice GXP. While these models are important, GM saved the really big bling for their homies. • Buick Enclave The all-new Buick Enclave is the first of several full-size crossovers to be based on GM's new Lambda platform. The eight-passenger will utilize 3.9-liter V6 and 5.3-liter V8 engines (wi…

Paris Preview: Audi Q7 V12 TDI Friday, we brought you the initial report that Audi would be dropping a 6.0-liter V12 TDI based on it's Le Mans-winning engine into the Q7 SUV. That report has been confirmed today with the release of additional details and photos from Audi, which will publicly unveil the beast later this month at the Paris show. Our initial report rated the car at 500 hp, but it's actually just shy, at 493 (the 500 rating is in PS). It also generates 1000 Nm / 738 lb-ft of torque, so if you ever feel inclined to pull your house off its foundation, you'll be well-prepped to give it the 'ol college try (if the car makes it to this side of the Atlantic). …

Auto show was originall supposed to open tomorrow, and I heard reports yesterday that it was off completely. What they don't tell you in this story is that a tractor trailer and a crane were on the section of floor that fell. Hoping my free tickets will still be good for the rescheduled show if it still happens at all.
