Since my 2007 travels are over, I've started looking at plans for 2008, including.... April 11-13 ... Michigan ... Monte Carlos @ Michigan International Speedway (MIS) June 27-30 ... Pennsylvania ... NMCOA MC Nationals August 8-12 ... Indiana / Ohio / Pennsylvania / New Jersey / Maryland / Arlington VA ... family reunion in PA (Aug 11) and "side trip" October 3-5 ... Missouri/southern IL ... Midwest Monte Carlo gathering And, looking at those plans, I wonder: What are your favorite car shows/cruise nights/events/gatherings ... be them local, regional or national? For some time now we've wanted to add a Wiki feature to C&G to capture the wealth of automotive knowledge we have floating around C&G. We have been waiting patiently for the developer of the IPBWiki software to complete the coding so that we can link your C&G log in to the C&G Wiki.... thus no need for multiple sign on IDs. It has become clear to me that the IPBWiki software isn't going to be completed anytime soon, and even if it were, the support looks like it will be nearly non-existent. I've been trying to find ways of moving forward without IPBWiki... what I keep coming back to is just using the MediaWiki software (this is the software that Wikiped…

Automotive News January 14, 2008 - 12:01 am ET Toyota's sprawling Georgetown factory in Kentucky horse country has taken over as the top-producing vehicle assembly plant in North America. For eight consecutive years, that honor went to General Motors' Oshawa car plant in Ontario. Georgetown finished on top in 1998, the year a long GM strike knocked the Canadian operation out of first place. Oshawa No. 1 and No. 2 are in the same building so are counted as a single plant. GM's Oshawa truck assembly is in a separate building and not included. In 2007, Georgetown turned out 514,382 vehicles, up 2.1 percent from 2006. Oshawa produced 470,016 units, a decline of …

Selective perception: I thought another post said "Parents are stupid sometimes" and then it turned out to be "Pants are stupid sometimes." So, I'll run a poll. So how do you rate the job your parents did? (I actually would have made a decent psychologist since I analyze everything, think about cause and effect and offer advice to my friends (when asked...except for Paulie, in which case I volunteer it). Mine. Honestly: a C- . Extreme inconsistency. We'd take a road trip to Yosemite or Hearst Castle and one day would be great and another day something would set them off. The biggest problem is that they imported what they both came from: a patriarchal set up w…

You guys have no doubt heard me talk about my friend "Duffy" he's the one who moved out to AZ almost 5 years ago. Hes one of my closest and best friends, we met in college 8 years ago. I ment him when I found out that he was doing a wicked awsome senior project. It was THE longest (280 pages) senior project in the history of the Business Department of our college. The topic? "A Business Case for a 5th Gen. F-Body from GM" So that's how me and Duffy met. After years of driving his 1991 Pontiac GTA, it was a steel roof hunter green TPi350/700R4 powered car with a tan interior, he sold it and now drives (as his only car) a 1961 Rambler Americ…

Now that I'm getting close to leaving North America for Europe, I started thinking about all the assembly plants that I have had some sort of connection with that are no longer here. I was thinking about all those jobs that were lost and the people I knew that worked in those plants. The following plants were more special to me than others. Arlington Assembly plant, TX - Where I started my GM career, it's still there. Terrytown Assembly plant, NY - Actually in Sleepy Hollow, NY. Beautiful place to be in the fall with the leaves changing color, the plant was along the Hudson river. Linden Assembly plant, NJ - Always in my mind as the S10 plant, I truely miss the people…

Last night I went to the Kernels ball game in Cedar Rapids that was sponsored by my company (plus all the free food and beer you can consume). Well, I ended up locking my keys in the car and didn't realize it until the game was over at 10:30 at night. I went to customer services and they gave me the number of a locksmith and also a number for the Cedar Rapids Police. I tried the police first because one of the guys said they have tools on hand to unlock cars, but the dispatcher said they had nothing like that (flat out lie....probably were too lazy to come out there). So I gave in and called the locksmith since I had no other choice. The guy and his wife were both e…

On Thursday night coming home from mom's a new Honda Odyssey pulled out in front of me and almost got blasted in the ass. I had to slam on my brakes. It was full of people too. What did they do? They waved at me. I saw like four arms upraised, waving happily. Don'tcha hate it when someone who's in the wrong just laughs at you, or worse... gives YOU the finger? Do tell.

1946 Chevrolet Suburban Carryall Motoring Memories: Chevrolet/GMC Suburban, 1935-2006 Story and photo by Bill Vance Ours is an evolving automotive world where fads and fancies, not to mention names and models, come and go. But through the years some vehicles, such the Model T Ford and the Volkswagen Beetle, did remain constant to their original calling. The T is gone of course, and Beetle production ended in Puebla, Mexico in July, 2003. The Volkswagen Beetle has even been reincarnated, albeit now with a front engine and front-wheel drive. Another model that has stayed the course is the truck-based all-steel Suburban (called the Suburban Carryall until 1973) sta…

I signed up for Saturday 7/16, but will have to go on Sunday 7/17 instead (unless I get "sick" and go Friday 7/15!) due to my daughter's 1st birthday party that day. However, I'm excited GM has returned with this show Check the link above to see if it's coming to a location near you (its travelling all over the US), what vehicles will be there and how to register.

I have a bicycling issue, I was hoping someone on here could help out, I know some of you have mentioned biking as a hobby in the past. Basically, I've spent the last 2 years doing short, intense rides, a couple of hours at a time over hellacious terrain, and my body is used to it. My issue is, I'm going to do a charity ride (Start to Finish MS, anyone want to donate?) in September , it'll be 80-100 miles each way (dont know the route yet) and I'm worried about trying to turn myself into an endurance cyclist. Today, I went on a 40 mile ride, that frankly didn't go well. My ass was in the most extreme pain I've felt in years and my back didn't feel that greta either. …

Well, now that I have licked this uploading problem and managed to scan all 2,000 or so photos that are the sum of my life before I left Canada, I can post pics of the cars I have owned. There is one vehicle missing and that is a '87 K-Car that I bought in 2000 for $300 from a customer (it only had 50,000 miles on it and it was absolutely pristine), spent $500 getting it 'safetied,' but it was rear-ended 3 months later by a chick in an Audi (the Audi had to be towed; I drove the K-car for another week before the adjuster came to 'write it off:' he gave me $2k for it!) Okay, she wasn't the prettiest, but she cost me $50 and a pair of speakers that my buddy wanted…

Last Wednesday my gf and I went to an auto auction. We sat in an drove many vehicles. Some were good some were not so good and some were pretty horrible. There were a couple GM cars I saw and looked at. a previous gen Grand Prix, and a 90's Seville. I didn't get to test drive either, but I did sit in them. The Caddy was nice, with plenty of soft materials and so on. I've always been a fan of the styling, but it's not a car I could afford, so I passed on it. The Grand Prix was probably in my price range...but I just could get get by the interior. Now, I can put up with a lot...but the plastics and the switchgear were just awful. Okay....I've read a rumor, and maybe you guys have heard it.....that Car & Driver might be leaving Ann Arbor to combine many operations with it's sister mag, Road & Track, in Newport Beach, CA.? At first, I thought "no" because....didn't they just move into new editorial offices in Ann Arbor? Then I read that one of the reasons Csaba Csere (who I've always liked) left C&D at the end of last year was because he didn't like the direction the magazine was taking....and admist rumors that they were leaving Michigan to move to CA to combine many operations with R&T (which would make some economic sense considering they are both owned by the same publisher..…

I was looking at McDonald's spread across the globe, and noticed this rather strange statement in the article: "No two countries that both had McDonald's had fought a war against each other since each got its McDonald's" Strange coincidence, but why would they say this? There's a movie I saw years ago that I just remembered again after recently having bought Demolition Man, but I have no idea what the name of it is. I'm pretty sure it came out in the 90s sometime, and it's in the vein of Demolition Man where a guy gets sent into the future to track somebody down. I think the movie takes place in a future New York (I remember one fight scene takes place in a futuristic highrise building that dwarfs the Empire State Building). The protagonist in the movie used to be a racing driver before he is sent into the future, and he meets up with his girlfriend from the past. It's not Demolition Man and I'm pretty sure it's not Fifth Element...d…

Ha! I bet I got a lot more to look with the title rather than "Van Comparison test". Amongst taking pictures, snow shoveling, and a few other things done during the "Blizzard 2011 Snow Day" I had, Wednesday, February 2, 2011, I found myself watching old car ads online. It's not like I didn't have other things to do ... it was just a cool way to spend a part of the day. I noted a bunch of my favorites; the results are the links below. At the end, I'm including a few 2011 Super Bowl commercials.... I had hoped my Dad's home-town Steelers would win, but the Green Bay Packers win includes one person that connects to the 1985 Chicago Bears, who won the 1986 Super Bowl 25 years ago ... I was watching Future weapons and found that they have a bullet that can be basically a point and shoot at 2500 yards on a cold bore shot. Thats very impressive I would bow down to that. But I remember reading about gravity, elevation, temperature, and all those other variables that effect a ballistic path. Its not like you can line up the cross hairs and go. you had to mentally do all the math from your GPS, offset your X hairs, and commit. I believe my longest one is 1,917 yards but about 5 minutes after that shot I don't remember anything but waking up that night in a Medic tent in unbearable pain. Sadly the Guy that saved me that day died on my birthday this year. …

Went to the gym today, and the hot shower water dried my hands up pretty bad. After that, I went to the grocery store. In the soap aisle, there was a rack with some kind of hand lotion I'd never heard of. They had all the different flavors sitting there in a row at shoulder height with "tester" written on the bottle, so I thought what the heck. I chose the unscented flavor, put my hand under the nozzle, and pushed down. Instead of squirting down into my hand, it shot straight out onto the center of my chest the size of a quarter and left a trail down to my navel. I looked like a friend had just done something very naughty to me. I immediately looked around to see…

We had to put one of dogs to sleep today...our Australian Terrier rescue, Nauti (there is a long story behind the name), which we rescued 2 1/2 years ago on my sister's birthday (got her from the county shelter, was a stray due to be euthnanized), had a bad seizure this morning..she'd been undergoing chemo treatement for almost a year and her quality of life had been diminishing. As an aside, I think adopting dogs w/ my sister from local rescues and doing volunteer work w/ the rescues has made me a better person.

I've read that with the free trail versions of Photoshop, you can't save, print, or export. Has anyone downloaded it to either verify or dismiss that? I'm getting fairly sick of my existing photo editing software and have been looking into Photoshop. I don't want to go through the trouble of downloading such a large program if I'm only going to be able to play with it and it's certainly too expensive to buy outright. As well, I would want to look into alternate programs. Either way, what I have is going to be replaced. Help is appreciated.

Pontiac Magazine Ads Also today while searching YouTube, I saw a 1965 GTO commerical. The first two seconds was a ad from the site it came from. Out of curiousity, I clicked on it and well, in the sense of Mag Ads I found a gold mine. Just looking at these evoke the emotion of what a Pontiac SHOULD BE. I'll post a few to get the ball rolling.

Check out this custom one-off. 1929 Ford with an early 90s 1st gen. Q45 motor transplant. It predated the Lexus hot rod by a few years but I never heard of it until just now when I found it on some random Infiniti forum. Later on as shown here it was obviouslt deemed cool enough by the powers that be at Nissan & Infiniti to dipslay at the show next to a 2nd gen. Q45 in the 97-01 era. Actaully that looks like a 99-01 Touring edition in the back ground.

I love Weird Al's songs. They are also funny and amusing. Finally he decided to come back and make fun of "Ridin' Dirty" by Chamillionaire. This one is White and Nerdy!!!! I love that he has a Prius in the video and a Segway lol. This is great. Also note, the 2 guys in the first part of the movie are currently part of MAD TVs cast if you recognize them. The video can be seen here. Enjoy!!!! White and Nerdy - Weird Al

Today, after months of letting the breeze outside in the street, my dad finally took it for brakes. The light was on, and the pedal went to the floor. I had been telling him for months to take it in, not good to let it rot. And now, we have to pay $450 because the back brake system is a mess and the front needs new pads. O how right I was and he didn't listen.

one word Amazing! This weekend was the Red Bull Air Race in Detroit. It was crazy. They put on a very good show and had much more then just air racing. they had helicopter stunts and sky divers and military aircraft flybys. They had a F-4U fly in formation with a F-18. that takes some skill there. Then the F-18 did a mach .98 fly by. Also had a B-25 flyby. Crazy stuff. I cant wait till next year. Did any of you get to make it? There must of been 200,000 people there easily. Forgot the camera but i will find some on the net and post them.

BEIJING -- China suspended military exchanges with the United States and threatened sanctions against American defense companies Saturday, just hours after Washington announced $6.4 billion in planned arms sales to Taiwan. The development has further strained the complex relations between the two powers, which are increasingly linked by security and economic issues. China's Defense Ministry said the sales to self-governing Taiwan, which the mainland claims as its own, cause "severe harm" to overall U.S.-China cooperation, the state-run Xinhua News Agency reported. The Foreign Ministry threatened sanctions against U.S. companies involved in the arms sales. A spokeswoman…

Nothing worse than just settling down into bed after drinking all night to hear a tinny, mechanical voice out in the hallway, ear-piercing sirens, and be blinded by flashing lights at 3 AM. God I hate false fire alarms.

So, in an unexpected turn of events, the Bonneville will disappear Saturday and be replaced with a 2013 Traverse. I got a deal and decided to take it, so the the Bonne disappears and the Malibu sticks around a couple more months until its lease is up. Then I have to decide what I get to replace the Malibu. Guess its time to update my av.

I have a 2013 Buick LaCrosse and I've noticed that whenever the low fuel light comes on, the amount of chimes is random. I either get 2 rounds of 4 chimes, or one round of 5, 6, or 7. Is there any reason behind this that anyone knows of?

Ah yes, winter. Time for comfort food. My grandmother used to make this simple, hearty dish to warm us up after being out in the cold: 40 ounce can butter beans/dried limas, rinsed 1 pound tube mild sausage, formed into bitesize patties 1 medium onion, chopped 1/2 cup brown sugar 1 cup ketchup preheat oven to 400 place sausage bites into skillet with enough water to cover completely, cover pan and bring to boil add onion to pan, cook sausage and onion until water evaporates and sausage starts to brown drain fat and place sausage and onion in baking dish with rinsed beans, add ketchup and brown sugar and mix all ingredients together bake at 400 for about 30 min…
