First customer deliveries are being rolled out in Europe from September 5 and Saab dealers around the world have already placed advance orders for more than 8,500 cars, a record for the launch phase of a new Saab model. To meet such unprecedented demand, overtime is being introduced at the Saab assembly plant in Trollhättan, Sweden, and this year's production target has been increased by more than 30 per cent, to 20,000 cars. "We are delighted to have a bulging order book for this new product and our main challenge right now is to meet the high level of customer demand at our dealerships," says Jan-Åke Jonsson, Saab Automobile's managing director. &quo…

Link to Article In the interest of making its Saab brand more attractive for purchase, General Motors is reportedly looking at returning more autonomy to its Swedish subsidiary. As it stands now, Saab is basically a glorified Swedish imprint of the Opel record label. Indeed, a lot of engineering, and even construction, for Saab cars goes on in Russelsheim, Germany, Opel's home. The biggest development is that Saab would gain control over its own finances and decisions. Although GM would still be Saab's owner, the Swedish Patient would have its own budget (a figure that has yet to be determined). The idea behind the move is that giving Saab additional financial autonom…

Still Flowing Toward the Mainstream Saab aims for sport touring sedan experience with its new 9-3 lineup. Monday, February 6, 2006 By Frank Aukofer - Scripps Howard News Service Like a flamboyant circus acrobat relegated to a support role, Saab has lost some of its audience appeal. Sales of its sport sedans and wagons, the 9-3 and 9-5, have slipped. To bring back some of the luster, the Swedish company added a couple of new models, though they weren’t really Saabs. One is the 9-2, a reworked version of the Subaru WRX, and the other is the 9-7X SUV, based on the Chevrolet Trail Blazer. For 2006, it also has added the 9-3 SportKombi, a four-door station wagon version …

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/05244/563326.stm Saab wagon's interior uninviting Thursday, September 01, 2005 By Don Hammonds, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Saving money on production costs is clearly a top priority with automakers, which means the days when each make would have its own engine, frame, body and styling are gone, replaced with one platform and set of components to make a wide variety of models. Saab Saab's 9-2X retains the carmaker's identity with its front end, side profile and sharp alloy wheels. That's OK, I guess, as long as each product still has a separate identity. But it can be a problem when identities don'…

Saab 9-3 Convertible, Now Available with Sand DETROIT – The sand often times conjures memories of walks on the beach with the fresh sea air swirling in and out with the tide. With the availability of optional tan colored top, in place of the standard black or optional blue colors, Saab 9-3 customers are now able to reminisce year-round in this robust four-season convertible. A Sand convertible top was only offered in 1993 and 1994 on the first generation convertible. After a 13-year hiatus, and many customer and dealer inquiries, the Swedish-born brand conceived by aircraft engineers, the option returns. “Saab is a customer-focused brand,” said Yanlin Sun, Saab 9-…

John Revill Automotive News Europe June 19, 2008 15:11 CET Production of the Saab 9-3 will remain in Sweden, a General Motors Europe spokesman said today. Media reports had suggested that production of the next-generation 9-3 would move to GM Europe's Opel plant in Ruesselsheim, near Frankfurt, Germany, from Saab's Trollhattan, Sweden, factory. To compensate for not getting the 9-3, GM Europe will add production of the Saab 9-5 and a compact car at Ruesselsheim. "It is good news that Ruesselsheim will get an extra model, a third shift and that the 9-3 production will remain in Saab's home country," said GM Europe spokesman Joerg Schrott. GM Europe has not…

Over the last six months, the fate of Saab has become even more of a question than it has been for the last several years. General Motors put the marque up for strategic review last Fall and it was not listed among the company's core brands when it submitted its viability plan to the U.S. Congress in December. With many of its new model introductions being delayed this year, one has to wonder if Saab will just slowly slide off into oblivion. Given the seeming absence of anyone willing to step up and buy the Swedish automaker, that may yet happen. Before that time, though, Saab dealers in Europe will get at least two additions to their product lineup. The 9-3X and the re…

http://www.autoweek.com/apps/pbcs.dll/arti.../339324355/1056 "After dissolving its relationship with Subaru that would have led to a Tribeca-based crossover, Saab went to work on one of its own. The result is the 9-4X BioPower concept. Not surprisingly, Saab also uses a green theme by equipping the concept with an E85-burning, 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. Don't let the relatively small engine size deceive you because Saab employs its "rightsizing" techniques to extract 300 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque from the engine. Power is delivered to the wheels through Saab's all-wheel-drive system with electronic rear limited-slip differential that debuted on the 9-3. …

Could BMW revive Saab in much the same way it has MINI? Perhaps the way to do it is hone down Saab to one line with a rich and unique personality and heritage. Saab's best days were with the 900 line. BMW could use a unique, practical line (4 doors) below its 1 series. A new 900 Turbo 4-cyl in four door hatchback, sportwagon and convertible could be made with MINI and BMW parts in the Trollhattan factory. Starting prices at $20,000 (just above the MINI). At this price there's a genuine market for people who can't afford a Bimmer but want one (even if it's front-drive which is OK - drive a MINI and you'll know what I mean). GM sells it to BMW for $1. Done. Of c…

G. The latest news to come out of Trollhättan is no exception, now that the Swedish automaker is looking for a new suitor. The old SAAB 9-3 has risen from the dead! The platform, now owned by National Electric Vehicles Sweden (NEVS) is being used as the basis for a "new" electric vehicle. The 9-3EV has gone into production in Tianjin China in a factory that can assemble up to 50,000 units a year. Further manufacturing facilities are being set up in Trollhättan, Sweden and a new facility in Shanghai China. Back in January, Evergrande Groupe, an investor in Faraday Future, purchased a 51% stake in NEVS for $930 million. Evergrande is being tight lipped about the cars and no details have yet been released for range, power, battery size, or even On Sale dates. View full article

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com August 6, 2012 Former Saab owner Spyker has filled a $3 billion lawsuit against General Motors for its actions of blocking the sale of Saab to Chinese automotive firm, Youngman Automotive. "This lawsuit seeks redress for the unlawful actions GM took to avoid competition with Saab Automobile in the Chinese market," Spyker said in a statement. "GM's actions had the direct and intended objective of driving Saab Automobile into bankruptcy, a result of GM's tortiously interfering with a transaction between Saab Automobile, Spyker and Chinese investor Youngman that would have permitted Saab Automobile to restructure and remai…

October 10, 2013 Drew Dowdell Managing Editor - CheersandGears.com It is October 10th, a bit too early for Halloween, and yet here is a zombie starting to show signs of being undead. National Electric Vehicles Sweden (NEVS) has confirmed that they have most of the agreements in place with parts suppliers to restart production of the 9-3 in Trollhättan, Sweden within a few months. NEVS is focusing primarily on suppliers in or close to Sweden to allow for shorter lead times, lower cost, and to bring greater benefit to the local economy. NEVS Purchasing Manager, Per Svantesson says, "We have 400 supplier agreements in place with only a few dozen left to complete in the n…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com January 18, 2012 The Saab story is only getting worse and worse. Last week, Saab reportedly sent 100 new vehicles to the crusher as part of the receivership process. The crushed cars include some pre-production 9-5 SportCombis and 9-4Xs. Reports say that Saab was able to save one of the 9-5 SportCombi for the Saab museum, which conflicts with reports of the Saab museum being closed and going into liquidation. The museum, which has a collection of 120 different Saab vehicles are now up for sale. According to BringATrailer, if you want your chance to get your hands on a piece of the museum, you have to submit a bid by J…

December 19th, 2011 - Drew Dowdell - CheersandGears.com - It looks like the end is nigh for troubled Swedish automaker SAAB who filed for bankruptcy in Vänersborg, Sweden today. After receiving a number of life lines in the way of funding promises via various Chinese banks and auto manufacturers, the final life line by Youngman Automotive was cut when General Motors officially stated that they would not approve the deal. Just last week, the court appointed administrator for SAAB's voluntary reorganization, Guy Lofalk, quit giving SAAB another two weeks to finalize the deal with Youngman Automotive. The official press release from SAAB is on page 2 Zeewolde, The Ne…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com December 14, 2011 Last time on the story of Saab; Guy Lofalk, the court-appointed administrator of Saab’s voluntary reorganization filed paperwork to end the reorganization and the Swedish courts would make decision this Friday. But like all other times, Saab has found a lifeline to keep them afloat. This time, Saab has found two. Lifeline #1 comes from Youngman Automotive who sent Saab 3.45 million Euros (about $5 million U.S. dollars) to cover immediate tax expenses this week. But that's not all; Youngman is promising a further $26.4 million payment this week to cover unpaid salaries and $13.2 million more by the en…

December 21, 2012 Drew Dowdell Managing Editor - CheersandGears.com How do we know the world is not ending today? Because Saab issued a press release. If they are still alive, then so are the rest of us. The agreement does not change the status of Saabs still under GM warranty coverage. Model year 2010 and and 2011 owners will be covered starting in 2013. William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com December 30, 2011 Saab's bankruptcy is attracting a lot of companies wanting to buy up pieces of the Swedish automaker. Last week, we reported that Youngman Automotive got their hands on Saab's new Phoenix platform. Now, an Indian automaker wants a piece of the griffin. Bloomberg reports that Mahindra & Mahindra, an Indian SUV manufacturer, is looking into buying up pieces of Saab. Two people familiar with the situation say the company is trying to set up meetings with the two court-appointed administrators who are overseeing Saab’s bankruptcy. The Saab name and logo are under control of defense company Saab AB and truck maker Scania, and National Electric Vehicle Sweden has to ask for permission to use it. "Every use of the trademark had to be discussed. NEVS can't get hold of the Saab name until we've approved it. That is under discussion right now," Scania spokesman Hans-Ake Danielsson told Automotive News Europe this week. "We have to protect our good name and brand. We have to be sure the new owner…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com June 12, 2013 A U.S. District court judge has dismissed the $3 billion lawsuit filed by Spyker on behalf of Saab against General Motors last August. The suit alleged GM blocked the sale of Saab's assets to Zhejiang Youngman Lotus Automobile Co and eliminate a potential rival in the growing Chinese market. "General Motors had a contractual right to approve or disapprove the proposed transaction. The court is going to grant the motion to dismiss the matter," said U.S. District Court Judge Gershwin Drain during a hearing in Detroit. What was coming down the pipeline had the company stuck around? SaabsUnited has the pictures and story behind the next Saab were it still in business, the 9-3 dubbed 'Phoenix'. The new 9-3 was spearheaded by designer Jason Castriota. Castriota was the person behind the PhoeniX concept shown at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. Castroita had a huge mission ahead of him with the design of the 9-3 as this excerpt shows. SaabsUnited notes in their story that Castriota and his team were limited by time and money. With Saab heading into bankruptcy, companies are coming in to snap up pieces of the brand. Hans Bergqvist, the administrator in charge of liquidating Saab told Swedish publication NyTeknik that many companies are interested in Saab's assets. Berggvist did confirmed that one of the companies interested is Youngman Automotive. This should come as no surprise as the company tried to save Saab until the last minute and has invested tens of millions of euros to help pay for wages and taxes. A spokesman for the company said that it was primarily interested in the Phoenix platform that would have underpinned the next-generation 9-3 and possibly other technologies that didn't i…

Saab is on the verge of a major new product offensive - but the company's manufacturing base might be moved from Sweden, General Motors chief Rick Wagoner says. 'I've seen Saab's forthcoming product portfolio and I've never been more optimistic about the future of the company than I am today,' he told What Car? today. 'Our plan is to deliver a wider range of models with shorter life cycles compared with the Saab of old, which relied on a few models in production for a long time. 'Now we just have to make a business out of it. The notion of 500 engineers working away somewhere in Sweden is very romantic, but it's not the way the…

Saab Plant May Get New Product STOCKHOLM -- General Motors' loss-making car brand Saab hopes to make a new compact model at its plant in Trollhattan, which last year lost a race to build the next generation of GM's mid-sized cars. The Swedish brand, which last year sold about 129,000 cars, mainly in Europe and North America, has run up hefty losses in recent years in a fiercely competitive market. Saab's Managing Director Jan-Ake Jonsson told Swedish news agency TT the new compact car would compete in the same segment as the BMW 3-series and Audi's A 3 and be made on a platform similar to that of the next generation of Opel Astra. Trollhattan last year lost the race f…

So I mentioned to a coworker the other day about the Saab 9-3 Sportcombi and he was like "Ewww Saab? Don't think you want to get one of those". I read the other thread about the theory on poor quality ratings, but what's the real deal here? Have there been that many complaints and reliability issues with Saabs as of late? Especially enough to cause this sort of stigma? I would like to consider this for a purchase in another 6-12 months, but don't want to regret the purchase shortly thereafter. Which brings up another question...how well do Saabs retain their trade-in value?

The links are in Swedish (sorry), but Swedish Auto Motor & Sport reports that the NG Saab 9-3 can be delayed until 2012 and also that it might change its platform to DeltaII instead of sitting on EpsilonII. Given that the size stats on that LaCrosse mule spotted in Sweden (IIRC not that much longer than the Insignia), I'd expect the NG 9-5 to be around 4850mm in length. Why then have an EpsilonII 9-3 if you can use the DeltaII platform, which I assume is AWD compatible, to produce a NG 9-3 range consisting of Sedan/Wagon, but also with a family of 3-door and 5-door hatches, to return some quirkyness to Saab? For comparison purposes, Astras range from around 4.2m to …

Saab Sticking With Engine Lineup On 9-4X William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com March 29, 2011 Saab's upcoming 9-4X crossover will not follow the same path as the Cadillac SRX. Outgoing Saab CEO, Jan Ake Jonsson said in a interview the 9-4X will not offer the 3.6 V6 as the only engine choice for the 9-4X. "No, we will have both engines. GM is going to put a 3.6-litre V6 into the SRX to replace the 2.8-litre turbo V6. We have the option to take that engine too but we haven’t yet decided if we want to do that. So just as we have said previously, we will launch the 9-4X with two V6 engines: a 3.0-litre, and a 2.8-litre turbo." Asked if the 9-4…

Saab To Head Into Bankruptcy Today? William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com October 11, 2011 Saab could be heading into bankruptcy today, if a report from Autocar is to be believed. According to the story, £60 million loan ($94M USD) from Chinese automaker Youngman Automotive is likely to be denied by the Chinese government. The reason why is due to the deal not having any intellectual property rights being acquired. Saab has been waiting on a £60 million loan from Youngman and an additional £210M ($328M) from Zhejiang Youngman Lotus Automobile and PangDa Automotive to help pay off debts and workers. The only problem is the Chinese government…

After I watched the show and heard what this guy had to say I thought about it for a split second and...Saab is doomed if they have people like this running the show. GM @ South Florida Auto Show SAAB 9-3 Convertible SAAB 9-3 Sport Sedan Check out the new SAAB fascias front and rear. The ‘ice block’ taillamps actually look rather nice in person (especially in softer colors like the blue convertible), but the real coup de grace is the incorporation of the CTS’ light pipes as DRLs in the front headlamps. The manner in which it flows with the upper grille lines makes it, dare I say, a more cohesive execution that in the Cadillac. It really looks awesome in person. This combined with the CTS and bejeweled headlamps of the Escalade Platinum makes a clear statement about how new headlamps technologies will be parlayed in the near …

Spied: 2008 Saab 9-3 These two photos are the ones that give us the most insight into what we'll be looking at with the MY2008 Saab 9-3 range. I've got to say, the first impression is bloody striking and just magnificent. This is just the aggressive look the 9-3 needed. The latest incarnation of the 9-5 was a little divisive (to say the least!) but so far, every reaction to this image that I've read has been totally positive. The Aero-X influence is unmissable and beautifully applied to the car. Not only does the rounded pressing on the hood give the headlamps some aggressive eyebrows, it is also reminiscent of the old clamshell hoods of Saabs past (Vector 220 points o…
