William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com October 3, 2013 The SRT Viper has been one of the most anticipated vehicles of this year. But it seems that anticipation isn't bringing many buyers. Automotive News is reporting that Chrysler is cutting back on Viper production from nine to six per day, and will be reassigning a number of employees to different facilities. "We're really looking at the reality of this type of car in this economy, as well as us controlling the market and making sure that we don't overbuild," said SRT CEO Ralph Gilles. A good thing since there 565 Vipers sitting on dealer lots at the moment. Dealers have only sold 426 Vipers since going o…

[source: MotorAuthority] Fiat ranks last in UK JD Power survey, bodes poorly for Chrysler Chrysler's vehicles, like all of America's cars, have improved greatly in recent years. But not-too-distant memory reminds us of the Le Baron and even of another ill-fated Italian tie-up and its Maserati-branded spawn. So Fiat's poor scores in the most recent JD Power survey in the United Kingdom gives cause to wonder if the Fiat-Chrysler union might ultimately be a tragic one. Fiat's role in helping to save Chrysler post-bankruptcy was applauded by President Obama just days ago, but already the naysayers are building their case. And unfortunatel…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com November 25, 2013 The Chrysler IPO will not happen this year. Forbes is reporting that Fiat has decided to not to launch the initial public offering of Chrysler before the end of 2013, citing that the short window before the end of 2013 is "not practicable." Not surprisingly, the hold up on the IPO is the disagreement between Fiat and the UAW's healthcare trust. Fiat currently owns 58.5 percent of Chrysler, while the trust owns the remaining 41.5 percent. The company wants to buy the trust's share, but for how much is what the two cannot come to an agreement. The IPO was going to be the way of figuring out how much the …

Here's a bit of head scratcher. A member of the Allpar.com forum did a bit of poking around Chrysler's secure dealer site, DealerConnect and found an interesting configuration for the 2015 200. The site listed a a 2.2L 16-valve “DeTomaso” turbodiesel four-cylinder engine. Now Automotive News was able to confirm the existence of this engine on the site. So what could this engine be? Well Automotive News has learned that Alfa Romeo is working a 2.2L turbodiesel producing somewhere between 135 and 210 horsepower. If Alfa Romeo was to share this engine, it would give the Volkswagen Passat TDI some much needed competition. But what the “DeTomaso” name? This is speculated to b…

The United States isn't the only place the Dodge Caliber is selling like hot cakes. According to a report by Automotive News Europe, the Caliber is enjoying a great deal of success in many European markets, with many customers now facing six-month waiting lists. "We underestimated demand for the product," Chrysler's Thomas Hausch told the trade publication. So far, the car has been on the market for three months overseas. Sales thus far have totaled 3,238 Calibers in western Europe. In 2005, Dodge sold 311 vehicles in total in the same market. The vehicles are selling "without any incentives," a major dealer in Paris said.

STUTTGART — Spy photographs suggest DaimlerChrysler's Dodge subsidiary may be working on a hot-rod version of its forthcoming Nitro SUV, perhaps a model from the Chrysler Group's high-performance SRT brand. But Dodge executives are still evaluating the possibility of such a model and say it's too early to make a decision. A Dodge spokeswoman told Inside Line, "I can't imagine" the company would do a Nitro SRT. The base-model Nitro will come out next year as a 2007 model. Although recent reports have said the Nitro will go into production in about a year, a different Dodge spokeswoman told Inside Line that production could come sooner. She added, "I would think [the pro…

NYPD Adds 'General Lee' Muscle Car Descendent, 2006 Dodge Charger, to Its Fleet By TOM HAYS Associated Press Writer NEW YORK (AP) -- The New York Police Department is adding some muscle to its car fleet: the 2006 Dodge Charger, whose 1969 model is best remembered for outrunning a hapless sheriff in "The Dukes of Hazzard." The department plans to buy 15 police versions of the car for a pilot program that will begin this summer, officials said Thursday. With so many flashy foreign cars on the road, speed matters, said Leonard Lesko, the NYPD's director of fleet services. "The car that does 110 mph doesn't do it anymore," Lesko said. In a recent analysis by Michigan…

Our last AKEOTD was a Chrysler-built tank powerplant, and you'd think it would be impossible to surpass a five-bank, 30-cylinder monster… but the IV-2220 airplane engine does just that. It's the very first Chrysler Hemi! The "2220" stands for its displacement in cubic inches (actually, it was 2,219.35 CI, or just over 36 liters). That's right, an engine with well over a cubic foot of displacement. Oh, but it gets even better! More than ten feet in length, hemispherical heads, aluminum block, single overhead cam, inverted-V configuration, and the power was sent to the propeller reduction gear via the middle of the crankshaft (technically, the IV-2220 was two V8s joined i…

If dropping a giant SUV from a helicopter were easy, everyone would be doing it. Chrysler's Jeep brand cooked up a plan to dangle a Commander SUV from 1,200 feet above its Chelsea proving grounds and then release it -- counting on four parachutes to ease its landing. At the same time, seven skydivers would drop from another helicopter, then pile into the SUV and drive over to a phalanx of media. The photo op was designed to announce Jeep's involvement with Operation Gratitude, a nonprofit effort to encourage Americans to send cards and packages to overseas soldiers. But one trial run went awry when a chute didn't open and the Commander suffered a hard …

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles have been a bit behind the curve when it comes to alternative powertrains. But the Chrysler Pacifica Plug-In Hybrid shows the company is beginning to catch up. Speaking with The Truth About Cars, FCA's global hybrid chief Michael Duhaime said that hybrid power found in the next-generation minivan is very scaleable. “This’ll be the largest footprint — in the Pacifica. As we get into the smaller vehicles, basically what we’ll do is put smaller electric motors. The power electronics is part of the transmission … all that stays consistent. Chrysler plans for the future Posted Sep 4th 2008 cnet.com Link to Article At the Western Automotive Journalists' dinner this week, Jim Press, President of Chrysler, told me exactly what I wanted to hear. When I asked how he plans on differentiating the Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep brands, he put it this way: Jeep will remain an iconic off-roader, with no soft-roaders spoiling the brand; Dodge will be the performance brand, but will also be a volume play; and Chrysler focuses on luxury, competing with brands like Acura. Maybe this type of brand differentiation just fits conventional wisdom, but it seems like a smart plan to me. Yet, in speaking more generally about the…

Dodge's original Li'l Red Express trucks are now in their early 30s, and even building a clone will be an exercise in rust mitigation and parts scavenging. By the time you're done, you'll have spent enough to buy a brand new Ram. Mopar high-performance icon Mr. Norm's is doing what Chrysler can't currently manage, reviving the spirit of the original with a fully modern Red XPress Truck, using the excellent new Ram as a basis. The name has been tweaked and there's no fat-fendered bed, but the general idea is the same. 1978 Dodge Li'L Red ExpressChrysler's 5.7-liter Hemi is the standard fitment, and with 390 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque, it makes a good argumen…

And nor is it the fact that if you buy an American car, you're going to have to commit acts of love with your cousin. Hammond: So what's the problem? Clarkson: Charger. Wrong Dodge. Auto company demanding that its two assembly plants become the most efficient in their classes in North America DaimlerChrysler Canada Inc. is demanding that its two assembly plants become the most efficient in their classes in North America, which would force the auto maker to slash a significant number of jobs in Windsor and Brampton, Ont., union sources say. If the company sticks to its plan to close a Toronto parts plant and outsource jobs at the other two plants, there will be a strike, Canadian Auto Workers union president Buzz Hargrove said yesterday. "Absolutely, no doubt about it," Mr. Hargrove said. The closing of the casting plant in Tor…

The agreement states that Fiat would pay $4.35 billion for the shares. The next step for Fiat and Chrysler will take place on January 29th. Chrysler to shut down plants for a full month by Chris Shunk on Dec 17th 2008 at 6:28PM Link to Autoblog It's no secret that Chrysler is in the fight of its life, and the Auburn Hills automaker is pulling out all the stops to keep the lights on -- even if it means closing the doors. Chrysler is shuttering all of its plants for one month, beginning December 19. In a short release to the media, Chrysler blamed the continued credit crunch as the main reason for the shutdown, and is trying to better-align its vehicle stock with customer demand. Dealers have notified the Pentastar that they've got plenty of perspective buyers, but an astonishing 20-25% of customers are un…

DCX Sells Stuggart HQ We had always operated under the assumption that there's no quick way to make a buck in the auto business. Turns out we were wrong, as DaimlerChrysler has just sold its headquarters in Stuttgart for $308.8 million in cash to IXIS Capital Partners Ltd. Don't fret, the building's new owners won't be kicking DCX to the curb, as the automaker simultaneously signed a 15-year lease to stay on the premises. TORONTO (Reuters) - The Canadian Auto Workers union says it expects to go on strike over job cuts at DaimlerChrysler Canada as bargaining positions harden heading into talks on a new three-year contract. The CAW chose DaimlerChrysler Canada on Wednesday as its next target in contract negotiations with the Big Three North American automakers. It reached a deal with Ford Motor Co. on a new three-year deal earlier this week. "Based on the current position that they have tabled with us, there is absolutely no way to avoid a strike," CAW president Buzz Hargrove said at a news conference. "If I was making a prediction today, we will be on the picket line, f…

Giant German carmaker Volkswagen and Detroit auto group Chrysler are joining forces to build a new minivan in the U.S., industry sources said Monday, as VW battles to arrest slumping sales in the intensely competitive American market. A contract between VW and Chrysler, which is the U.S. offshoot of transatlantic carmaker DaimlerChrysler AG is due to be formally signed at next week's Detroit motor show. A VW spokesman declined to comment. Under the deal, Chrysler is to build for VW a mini-van using Chrysler's Voyager as the basis. The new car is to hit the U.S. market in 2008. At present, VW, which is Europe's biggest carmaker, does not offer …

Now, some new spy shots are joining in the Viper stream. The shots reveal the new Viper will have an easier time breathing thanks to pair of large vents on either side of the Viper's trademark triangular air intake. Inside, the new Viper will ditch analog gauges for a full digital dashboard (complete with 220 MPH speedo). Source: Autoblog View full article

Chrysler's Large Cars Getting Diesel And Hybrid Options William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com October 18, 2011 Chrysler hasn't been shy with offering diesels for the US. Back in the mid to late 2000's, Chrysler offered versions of the Jeep Liberty and Grand Cherokee with a diesel. And they still aren't shy to offer them once more. Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne says the company will once again offer diesel powerplants for their larger vehicles. The first vehicle to lead the charge will be the Jeep Grand Cherokee in 2013. http://www.autoblog.com/2015/12/27/fiat-chrysler-buy-emissions-credits/ The world of carbon emissions uses some unusual units of measure. Take, for example, 8.2 million megagrams. Who needs to know how much that is? Someone at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, that's who.FCA had to buy that many greenhouse-gas emissions credits from greener automakers, Reuters says, citing a report from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Because its vehicles' collective fuel economy continues to trail the industry average, FCA purchased the emissions credits at of the end of 2014 in order to meet US emissions regulations. About two-thirds of those credits were acquired fromToyota, w…

Chrysler issues sharp rebuke to Advertising Age On December 3rd, 2009, AdvertisingAge wrote an article criticizing Chrysler for using taxpayer funds to pay an Italian advertising agency to produce a commercial. A rather bitter Peter Delorenzo, from AutoExtremist.com says, "I'm sure the hundreds of people from BBDO who are being blown out the door are going to just love this, not to mention the U.S. taxpayer." If Chrysler was bent on social causes, the brand should have contributed to food banks in the region surrounding its suburban-Detroit headquarters. "At least there would be a shred of relevance in that gesture." Chrysler responds: "First, this film was crea…

That money went into the Chrysler business. "The claims made now go beyond the framework of the contractually agreed possible obligations," the Daimler statement sai…

By Roland Jones Associate editor MSNBC Time was when automakers would slap a wad of cash on a car’s hood to shift it off a dealer’s lot. These days, with gasoline prices climbing to new record highs almost daily, they’re slapping down a can of gas instead. With the summer driving season just around the corner, Chrysler recently launched its “Let’s Refuel America” program — an offer that caps the price of gasoline at $2.99 a gallon for three years for people who buy or lease new vehicles from the maker of Dodge and Jeep vehicles. The automaker, which was acquired last year by private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management for $7.4 billion, said this week that th…

http://www.autoblog.com/2007/05/18/cerberu...sler-financial/ I know it had been mentioned plenty that Cerberus would now own both Chrysler and a controlling stake in GMAC, but what's interesting is thinking about this in context of Chrysler Credit and GMAC tieups. I don't know what kind of synergies could be found (I'm not that well versed on the financial sector) but these companies are already cash cows. If they did find synergies and made a tieup, that alone could go a long way toward justifying their investment in Chrysler.

Chrysler Considering Closing Up Delaware Plant DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Group will tap executives from its German parent's Mercedes division to study restructuring moves, including the potential closure of an auto assembly plant, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday. The initiative aims to cut $1,000 in costs from each of the vehicles Chrysler produces - a goal that, if reached, could save billions of dollars, according to the paper. Alysha Webb Automotive News September 17, 2007 - 12:01 am EST SHANGHAI — Chrysler LLC could not have made a better choice to head its Asia operations than Phil Murtaugh. He is widely respected, has many years of China experience and played a major role in making General Motors a success in China. But Chrysler management in Detroit will have to give him free rein to operate. GM made a big mistake a couple of years ago when it diluted Murtaugh's decision-making authority. Chrysler also will have to give him some help in the form of the right models to sell. During his long run as GM's top man in China, which began in 1996, Murtaugh demonstrated a deep under…

We’ve reached a proposed tentative agreement that I believe addresses our members’ principal concerns about their jobs and their futures. We have made real gains and I look forward to a full discussion of the terms with our membership,” said UAW President Dennis Williams in a statement. …
