  5. By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com April 30, 2013 General Motors is hoping to reverse a trend of losing market share by introducing new models over the next few years. Since 2002, GM has seen its market share decline at a steady rate, losing 10.5% in that time. This is due to competitors such as Chrysler and Japanese automakers roaring back in sales. GM believes a onslaught of new products can help them claw back some market share. The Detroit News reports that 70% of GM's product portfolio will be refreshed by the end of this year. That will climb to 89% by 2016. "The oldest car will be the (Chevrolet) Cruze and the (Buick) Verano, very shortly. So …

GM Says Pricing Is Working PR spin prefaces sales figures due out this week. by Paul A. Eisenstein (2006-03-27) The "top-line" story isn't a good one for General Motors. The automaker expects to report a one-percent decline in first-quarter U.S. market share when March numbers are tallied up at the end of this week. But digging just a little deeper would reveal a more positive picture, senior company officials asserted during a Monday afternoon briefing for reporters. The decline in overall, or top-line, sales is largely the result of declining fleet sales, said GM's director of market analysis, Paul Ballew. On the retail side, he stressed, the automaker is act…

Effective Oct. 1, GM says it is paying its "indirect" suppliers 60 days after receiving goods or a valid invoice, GM spokeswoman Deborah Silverman said yesterday. The company previously paid those vendors on a "second day, second month" basis or within about 35 days, she said. Despite the longer terms, payments will be made more frequently -- on a weekly basis, rather than once a month. GM has about 10,000 indirect suppliers in North America. They provide services and n…

Bloomberg reports that one lawsuit has been filed in San Francisco's federal court states that faulty ignition switch problem is present in the 2010 Cobalt, a model that isn't in the current recall by GM. Another lawsuit filed in Alabama states that GM knew of defects with Cobalts built before April 2009 due in part to technical service bulletins issued to dealers. The TSBs stated that keys may "stick" or "bind" in the switch of non-recalled Cobalts and other vehicles. “We will not comment specifically on the suit or pendin…

In the throes of the biggest auto swoon since 1931, the headmen of Detroit go hat in hand to Washington to try to keep their once mighty industry upright for a couple of months and are treated as if they had invented the four-wheel-drive subprime mortgage. Washington -- The Obama auto task force is preparing to loan General Motors Corp. about $5 billion in additional federal short-term aid, and Chrysler LLC $500 million, an Obama administration official familiar with the matter said Thursday. At the time an unnamed member of Barack Obama’s administration was quoted as saying that “you don’t need banks and bondholders to make cars”. He said aloud what the offer to the bondholders had merely implied. For unsecured loans worth $27 billion, creditors would be awarded a paltry 10% of the “new” GM. And unless 90% of creditors agreed by a deadline of midnight on Tuesday May 26th then GM would undoubtedly have to reinvent itself in the embrace of Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. We know GM is developing diesels for the US. My question is how are these going to be released? Will they be launched just in new models and MCEs, or will they be made available for all models that can take them ASAP? The reason I am asking this is that my ideal vehicle would be an SRX, and I am wondering the probability that GM would release a diesel version of it as the engine becomes available, especially since its future is in doubt. I want to be green as well as plan for the future (diesel engines can switch to biodiesel fuel with no problem, whereas a gasoline engine making a fuel switch needs modifications).

Talking with the Detroit Free Press, Lutz said he considered running in 2010 election for Governor of Michigan once he left GM. However, Lutz would pass on the idea. "The endless meetings and events around the state. And then he told me how much I would have to raise and how much I would personally have to spend on it. I said, No way," Lutz told the Detroit Free Press. It's understandable why Lutz decided not to run, but it would have be…

DETROIT -- As General Motors moves to value pricing, it is training its dealers to boost sales of add-on accessories. Retail sales of accessories are an estimated $30 billion a year business in the United States. The business grew by two-thirds between 1998 and 2004. GM dealers sold about $1 billion in accessories last year, says Nancy Philippart, executive director of General Motors Accessories. "Customers have more flexibility and choice at the point of sale," Philippart says. "They get what they want, and that increases our odds of making the (vehicle) sale." With value pricing, GM wants to curb incentives and move transaction pri…

It transformed Detroit into the Silicon Valley of its day, a symbol of America’s talent for innovation. It built celebrated cars, like Cadillacs, that became synonymous with luxury. And now it is filing for bankruptcy, something that would have been unfathomable even a few years ago, much less decades ago, when it was a dominant force in the American economy. ------------------------------ I thought this was a really good article.

Bankruptcy, Shmankruptcy Jerry Flint, 02.13.06, 12:00 AM ET Enough already on General Motors and Bankruptcy. I am tired of the B-word. GM isn't going bankrupt this year; GM isn't going bankrupt next year; 2008 is so far off that even Bill Gates could be bankrupt by then. It's dangerous to go three years out, but no, I wouldn't expect GM to go bankrupt in 2008, either. Why not? The company has $19 billion in the kitty and just about $100 billion in the pension fund. But there's more here than the balance sheet. When I was a boy, there was one reason companies went bankrupt: They couldn't pay their bills. GM can pay its bills, so that's not a problem. The new reason f…

Jamie LaReau Automotive News August 25, 2008 - 12:01 am ET DETROIT — The world in which General Motors operates is a very different place from what it was a year ago. The company explained that the one pertaining to the 2014 CTS doesn't cover all of the CTSes. Wait, we just made that somewhat confusing. The 2014 CTS Coupe and Wagon, which are based on the second-generation model are effected by this recall. The 2014 CTS sedan, which is brand new isn't a part of this. Why GM didn't make this clarification when they announced the recall is unknown. Our best guess is that GM was in rush when getting these recalls out and forgot to note that.
