As we've all known for years, I think the White House has viewed "Detroit" more like a pesky mosquito that won't go away, and not a relevant concern for the country anymore. They're an afterthought for these bozos - and mainly because they probably don't pump near as much money into the political machine of Washington as they once did. Moreover, these people don't give a $h! about the working class, and I think they view the domestic auto industry as more or less a symbol of an "old s…

  62. Former GM CEO, Robert Stempel, Passes Away At 77 William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com May 10, 2011 Robert C. Stempel, the former CEO of General Motors from 1990 to 1992 passed away today in Florida at age 77. Stempel began his career at GM in 1958 at Oldsmobile. He would become the head of Pontiac, Opel, and the Buick-Oldsmobile-Cadillac group before being named CEO in 1990. His tenure of being GM's CEO would be short. A $7 Billion loss in 1991, 12 plant closures, and 74,000 jobs caused the board to force Stempel out in 1992. Stempel was however a gifted engineer, leading the development of catalytic converter during the 70's. He also play…

FORTUNE Magazine) - It is the instinctive wish of most American businesspeople, even those unlikely to be directly affected, that General Motors not go bankrupt. True, some people will say, "They had it coming to them." But the majority will be more practical, telling themselves that the company is so central to the economy, so sprawling in its commercial reach, that bankruptcy--"going into chapter," as restructuring folks say--is ominous almost beyond contemplation. And yet the evidence points, with increasing certitude, to bankruptcy. Rick Wagoner, GM's 53-year-old chairman and CEO, may say, as he did in a January interview with FORTUNE in his aerie of an office high ab…

Wall Street Journal New GM Chief Says Company Can Hit U.S. Goals The new head of General Motors Corp. said Tuesday the company could reach the goals set by the U.S. auto task force ahead of a June 1 deadline. Fritz Henderson, installed Monday as interim chief executive, said GM remained focused on restructuring out of court and understood the tasks needed to avoid a "quick rinse" bankruptcy. Mr. Henderson told reporters that GM had made "a good down payment" on a new restructuring plan after the federal task force said Monday GM's existing efforts were insufficient, and turned down a company request for fresh …

This is from the Wall Street Journal-Copyright Dow Jones KANSAS CITY, Kan.—Starting Jan. 4, General Motors Co. plans to do something unprecedented in the U.S. car industry: It will run its assembly line here around the clock on a permanent basis. While common in other industries, not even car-efficiency benchmark Toyota Motor Corp. operates its plants routinely with more than two shifts. Car-assembly lines need too much scheduled maintenance and restocking for such intensive production to make sense, many industry experts say. The Kansas City plant launched the redesigned 2010 Buick Lacrosse, left, which is a candidate for the 2010 North American Car of the Year Award.…

By Jason Stein Automotive News / September 05, 2005 http://www.autonews.com/article.cms?articleId=54388 DETROIT -- Fill 'er up? Maybe not. In some U.S. cities last week, regular unleaded gasoline was selling for $3.49 a gallon. That means filling a three-quarter-ton Chevrolet Suburban's 37.5-gallon tank cost a wallet-whopping $130.88, or $62 more than in January. Hurricane Katrina's short-term impact on fuel prices highlighted a worst-case scenario for Detroit's automakers: As gasoline prices rise, the product mix could shift away from big SUVs - and profits could shift with it. The timing is bad for General Motors, which …

General Motors Promotes Greater E85 Consumer Awareness, Use In Minnesota and I started to think. In order to dispense Ethonal a Gas station would require new tanks and new fuel lines. Everything would need to be renewed for the different fuel. So this could cost several thousand if not hundreds of thousands per station. For how long would this fuel sorce be in use, if GM suspects Fuel Cells are on the horizon? How many years will the gas station have to make pennys per gallon to pay off this fuel switch? will the investment be worth while, if after 5-10 years…

I may be the only one who cares but does anyone know if the Vibe/Matrix will be available in '08? Reason I'm asking is that we will likely be downsizing when the lease is up on our '06 Caravan in March of '08. The next-gen. Mopar minivans are simply going to be to big for us--and more importantly, we want something that gets better fuel economy. We'd like to stick with a wagon-y vehicle. I drove a Caliber and it wasn't too bad, though I started feeling claustrophobic inside of it pretty quickly (that cursed high beltline). One of the vehicles we are thinking of is the Vibe, but I don't know if it's still going to be around next spring. Anyone else know?

  75. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com September 4, 2012 There's a lot of questions dealing with Holden Commodore after 2017. The facelifted Commodore, the VF, will be debuting next year on the Zeta platform. But when 2017, Zeta will not be used at all. “Zeta is not a global platform for GM,” said Holden boss, Mike Devereux, during a tour of the Elizabeth production facility. Jamie LaReau Automotive News August 25, 2008 - 12:01 am ET DETROIT — The world in which General Motors operates is a very different place from what it was a year ago. Gasoline prices are at unprecedented highs, the green movement has gained momentum that likely won't be reversed, the slump in housing has killed the demand for high-profit pickups and SUVs, and the Detroit 3 are running out of cash. Add to that strict new federal fuel economy regulations. Although GM has vowed to not let those factors diminish its future product lineup, they are affecting how many products the automaker will build. Economic conditions turned so severe that in June, GM put its…

THE Chevrolet Volt is expected to be the icing on General Motors’ 100th birthday cake this week. The much-promoted sedan, which will operate as an electric car in typical local driving, is intended to provide a jump-start for the company’s second century. The timing of the Tuesday event is fortuitous, for much more is riding on the Volt than whether a new model using experimental technologies will be a hit. For if the Volt succeeds, it could put the troubled company on a whole new path after 10 decades tethered to the internal-combustion engine. If it fails, it could drag G.M., and perhaps the entire struggling American auto industry, even further behind Asian competito…
