Bitchin' article that tells whiny parents to STFU and actually parent. Video games aren't the devil. --- Reality Bytes: Eight Myths About Video Games Debunked Henry Jenkins MIT Professor A large gap exists between the public's perception of video games and what the research actually shows. The following is an attempt to separate fact from fiction. 1. The availability of video games has led to an epidemic of youth violence. According to federal crime statistics, the rate of juvenile violent crime in the United States is at a 30-year low. Researchers find that people serving time for violent crimes typically consume less media before commi…

I just started a summer job this week doing office work for a law firm. It's literally a 9-to-5 job. It has it's ups and downs but the days go by pretty quickly. I don't have the capability or time to access C&G while at work, so I'll start trying to catch up on the news better when I get home.

We all got conditioned to having it in the steering column. Then, after renting Intrigues, GPs and Malibus, I found that having it in the dash is kind of cool. Slap on the wrist to LaCrosse and Lucerne for having it on the column.

So the 2007 Leasebacks will be in at our dealership in mid November-Early December. After the Cobalt fiasco my dad wants to get the floatiest, wallowiest rental queen we can find. Lucerne CX would be perfect but it's beyond what we want to spend with the Allure only a bit less equipped for a few grand less. The leaseback figures our salesman has quoted us with says that prices would be nearly the same for all 3. He says he likes the Impala himself, but the seat issue continues to nag. My dad has a bad back from when he was run over by a stolen car at a police roadblock in the 1970s so he'd have to revisit the lumbar support to see if it makes any difference, but tha…

I understand the concept that everyone gets to choose what they really love to drive... But it blows my mind that so many people, working at GM for many years, choose from the dark side. Of course, if YOU were scooping up a nice GM check and benefits, ya think you could find ONE vehicle in the GM stable to drive to work??? At the Tech Center in Warren, they have designated parking decks in which only vehicles of the GM family can park. The other guys have to park aways out, and brave the elements to trudge all the to the bldg. Some losers drive crappy ricers and park close anyway, where they shouldn't. I'm going to have to make the buy of a lifetime. I have to find the best possible deal on a plow truck, and the budget will be tight. We have all seen the Tundras, and now the FJ, sitting on the lots - even as rebates begin to hit the "IT'S FREE!!!" status. I have come up with a few possible special editions that may help Toyota move some of the inventory and get the sales back on track. Just a few of my early ideas, and I would love to hear yours! For the FJ Cruiser: The San Andreas Fault Edition - You never know where it will crack next! To help hide the unsightly cracks, I suggest a stripe kit that has the look of ripped asphalt at the belt line. The Zebra/safari edition: Again - those stripes will really keep the unsightly cracks out of the public eye. The Tundra: The Honey Bee Edition: Th…

That vehicle... in my sig... it's a lovely Mazda AZ-Wagon. You probably said to yourself "Hmm, that looks alot like the Scion xB", but it actually predates it, back to 1994. What you see if actually the latest of many facelifts on the 3rd gen. It's based on the lovely Suzuki Wagon R. I know, it must have been killing you wondering what it was.

One fast–growing American industry has become a conspicuous beneficiary of the recession: for–profit colleges and trade schools. At institutions that train students for careers in areas like health care, computers and food service, enrollments are soaring as people anxious about weak job prospects borrow aggressively to pay tuition that can exceed $30,000 a year. But the profits have come at substantial taxpayer expense while often delivering dubious benefits to students, according to academics and advocates for greater oversight of financial aid. Critics say many schools exaggerate the value of their degree programs, selling young people on dreams of middle–class wages…

Hello and welcome back to In Retrospect. After a breif hiatus, IR is back and will be brought to you monthly in The Lounge. Future issues will/may hold more content. This month we ask one question: Why didn't they build that? *** The car that should have been built was a concept by GM -- Nineteen-Ninety-Five's Buick XP2000. These images taken by avant1963: Why didn't GM build it? The platform would've made a great replacement for both the W-Body and B-Body cars; the styling was near timeless and well-done; the packaging was a flawless idea. (They can keep the Automated Highway Sytem, though.) Why didn't they built it? Guess you can chalk it up to the bea…

Welcome to the first issue of "In Retrospect" for July 2006. This internet publication exclusive to Cheers & Gears will be available here in the Lounge bi-weekly. "In Retrospect's" mission is to bring you random bits of automotive related articles, automotive ads that have long since went out of print, and other auto junk pulled from over a decade of "Car & Driver" magazines. Here's what's available for you to gawk at this month: The Chevrolet Astro was in a class of it's own. (Oct. 1996): Can't afford a new or classic Vette? Well, here's a model of one and some cologne so you can inhale that new car scent all day long. (Oct. 1996): This is here because, …

This could very well be something I'll start doing monthly...or even bi-monthly. You see, I have over a decade of old "Car & Driver" magazines stored in a Rubbermaid bin in my closet, and I need to put them to good use. Here's the idea I had: every month, pull one random issue out of mothballs and scan something random from the issue I select. It could be an ad, it could be an article. Every page is fair game. To start us off, I decided to show off a bunch of random junk. Since this is the first -- or last, I'm not sure -- it's deserving of a light boom. I see those commericials from time to time. You know, the commericials promising that if you buy a car from Police Auctions and so forth, you can get a car from $500 bucks and up. Now, I don't know if I would go that route, but the word "police" got me thinking about a car...to be more specific, a 1994 - 1996 Chevy Caprice 9C1. The same car that Johnny Law used (and is still using somewhere) to write John Public a speeding ticket. Why the 9C1? Well, truth is, I'd settle for a Classic from that year range. And God knows I'd be happy with an Impala SS. Who wouldn't? I guess I'm singling out the 9C1 is because it has a heavy-duty suspension along with engine and tranny twe…

So I was thinking earlier and came up with a ton of questions about battery-powered and hybrid, non-ICE vehicles... 1. Can they haul like our diesels? Can they off-road? 2. How would you "mod" one? Add some RAM like a computer? Obviously not, but who knows... 3. When they become widespread, will they be able to power the planes that you fly from here to Europe? 4. Will they be able to be used in the water, ATV, and very cold conditions (not only in cars way up north, but also snowmobiles and the like)? 5. Of course they'll be more expensive at first, but after technology gets going, will they be cheaper than mass-produced ICEs? 6. What will happen to gas stati…

While the Avlanche might be decent as far as trucks of that vintage go.... it's not like it's a Volt in the MPG department.... it's not even a Chevy SS in the MPG department.... and putting that in the ad isn't fooling anyone. What doozies do you see in car ads that are wildly inappropriate to the vehicle they are selling?

Flybrian has seemingly taken it upon himself to strip me of every thing I've help create on Cheers and Gears, however I still continue to pay for the web-site. That said, I sincerely hope you guys have had enough of me. I will continue to post, however I will not be the poster I once was before. Hope you catch my drift. It's been a long ride C&G....now, I continue to write the checks....yet...get f@#ked out of everything else!

So, its Friday at 4:30PM and its been raining since, oh, say, 10:00PM on Thursday. Visibility is less than a mile and the sky is still pouring torrents of rain. You come upon an intersection that is flooded out with perhaps two and a half feet of water. You're driving a Toyota Celica. Do you... A) Go as far around it as you can. B ) Stop, wait for the flood to subside. C) Stop, make a U-turn, seek an alternate route. D) Drive right through it because, hey, if the National Guard 6x6 in front if you made it, you can too! Some chick chose D and became the fifth of eight cars I saw flooded out today. One was a spankin' new Mercedes CLS with the window sticker still on it…

I just wanted to see what Class of people we have on C and G. My guess is mostly middle class but i have been wrong before. Don't take this personal, just wondering. On average i have been making about 70 to 130k a year and I feel that puts me in the upper middle class.

Figured I'd go in a similar path as Fly did with his Jag thread. This was imported from Japan and now in Canada. This car is amazing. One of the cleanest examples I have seen (in fact one of the very few I've ever seen). http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...ADME:B:EF:US:11 Very cool.

Incredibly Stupid Designs of the Mundane What designs of every day things to you encounter that just make you stop and seriously contemplate looking up the designer so you can give that person a good slap across the face while shouting "What were you thinking?!?" I'll give the example I encountered to as a starting off point. As many of you know, my partner and I share his 2004 Honda CRV. Today I was doing an oil change. The oil filter is located at the rear bottom part of the engine block. In order to access it you must reach around the CV boot. When you pull the filter off, the remaining oil that is still in the block drains out through the filter hole directly onto …

Well, it's cloudy and cool here this a.m. (unbecoming for a July 4th, imo). Still, it's a day to celebrate the anniversary of our great country's birth as a nation. And in that spirit (of '76), what better to do than declare your independence? Is there something holding you down, keeping you from greatness? Kick it! Be free!

Today I was cleaning the wheels on my car to avoid them getting pitted out from all the salt and sand that have been put on the roads lately, when I noticed dozens of little rust spots all over the side bodywork of the car. I freaked. I had spent so much time over the summer claying and waxing, trying to get it prepared for winter, and there were these tiny pin drop rust spots everywhere. I started running through my mind what could have caused it and decided it was probably all the salt they have been putting on the roads lately. So I took it into the garage and started wiping it down with Fast Wax to remove salt residue and found out it was also removing most of t…

If you happen to be visiting Saudi Arabia, don't drift your rental car, you could lose your head. A popular amateur sport in the kingdom, drivers push their cars into skids at high speeds through traffic while spectators gather on the side of the road to watch and cheer, sometimes with disastrous results. Scores and scores of videos of the practice, called “Hadwalah”, are available on Youtube. In the video below, a Honda Accord is seen speeding down a highway with guns blazing out of the windows. The driver later turns around and drifts next to a school bus full of children. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dGt0RnZcO88 Saudi police have been cracking down on the practi…

What are the US regulations regarding the size and placement of marker lights? Many Euro cars have front side markers high and to the rear of the front fenders, do they have to add something in the front to meet regs? I'm wondering how flexible the design parameters can be for these lights in the US market.

Don't know where else in the forum to ask this...so... 1. How can GM run the p[lant that builds the sky-solstice profitably when they are only selling 1500 cars or so a month? Just curious. 2. Anybody know anything about the Baltimore plant? Have there been more than one plants in Baltimore? My 55 Chrolet 210 2 door was built in Baltimore and my 97 GMC Safari Van was built in Baltimore. Notieced that GM no longer has a plant there. Also, is this the same plant that built the 69 custom S pontiac that one of our forum members owns? 3. I owned for a very long time a 71 Chevelle that was built in Texas. When was this plant closed? 4. SSR production is stopped, r…

Looking for some verified, SPECIFIC dates: When was Saturn announced ? I have a clipping of then-POTUS Reagan driving a GM concept that looks like a red banana, it's captioned as a "Saturn concept", but it's wearing a Bowtie. It bears resmblence to & came after the Chevy Aero 2000, but has an enormous rear overhang: and I seem to remember this 'red banana' being called the "Citation IV" at one point. Could not find an online pic. This pic is from Time, 06-17-85. Have another clipping, undated, that says 'Saturn was announced Thursday', and by the back side- it points to Nov (reports of Oct car sales), I assume this is '85 again. Also, when was Saturn in…

Anybody ever bought something off the TV that didn't turn out to be total crap? Maybe it was actually worth more than what you paid for it? I saw a commercial once for a product called the Perfect Pushup, and then forgot about it for a while until I saw it in Wal-Mart for $20. A buddy of mine had it and liked it, so I decided to try it out since it was on sale (usually $40). It's probably been the best twenty bucks I've spent; it's durable and I have actually seen results with it. I use it almost every day and had added about 2 or 3 inches to the circumference of my arms and my whole upper body is toned. I've been using it for about 7 months now. Even if it broke …

Boy. it has been a rough weekend... I'm sure you might remember my little "hero" thing I did earlier this year, in which I hurt my bad back..... Well, after buming into something, and then lifting my little guy early saturday, I hurt my back again... I really sucks when you can't lift your own child. I was in so much pain, and even Heavy duty pain killers (begin the the letter V) didn't help.... While I'm getting better, it sucks to be in constant pain.... I'm hoping that it heals quick.....

A while ago I posted a new key design in the Design forum, which sparked me to think of this. Aside from the Sketch and Photochop competitions we have, how about an innovative feature contest? We might be able to inspire GM to incorporate some new features in future cars.

On Lincoln Way in east Ames, a few stations are currently having some type of gas war. Right now, regular unleaded is $2.09 per gallon at the Citgo, Casey's, and Phillip's 66 all right by each other. About half a mile west is a BP where 87 is $2.48, and further west most stations are averaging $2.50. It's crazy...I filled up my car for less than $30 for the first time in months!

There's a dealership in Toronto dumping their remaining '06 Tauruses for CAD$13,988. For comparison, the bloody Aveo is CAD$12,995, and the Cobalt is $14,930. If I was in the market for a car that big right now, I might even look past the fact that it's a F**d.

[source: Inside Line] Subcompact Is No Longer a Four-Letter Word Ford Fiesta (Euro Version) vs. Honda Fit By Jason Kavanagh, Engineering Editor Date posted: 09-20-2009 Proponents of the subcompact car will tell you that its low purchase price and handy dimensions deliver a combination that can't be matched for efficiency and practicality. Its detractors turn up their noses because they don't want to drive a slow, cramped tin box. Taking up the ground between these camps are two modern examples of the subcompact car that demonstrate that driving enjoyment and frugality don't have to be mutually exclusive: the 2009 …

Browsing YouTube, I stumbled across a walkaround video of an '84 Monte SS with a 'Vette 355/6-speed manual setup. I noticed that this Monte's instrument cluster was not the stock Monte SS cluster. Here is a link to the video: This is the stock Monte SS instrument cluster: This is the modified cluster: Notice how the rev counter is mounted on the left side in the modified cluster and stock cluster has the rev counter mounted in the right side? Also, the needles on the modified cluster point due south. I've been searching '80s era GM cars and haven't been able to make a match. I hope, though, that this instrument cluster is more common and doesn't take a …

So, my car insurance for this term went up $234... that's for 6 months. Two accidents with the Sierra and two speeding tickets will take a toll, I understand that. Still, it seemed a huge penalty, especially with loyalty discounts I was given. As the spokesmodel went over all my information, she asked me to verify that I am RENTING my home. When I informed her I own my home, suddenly my car insurance premium went back down $45! And they are sending me a refund for the last term of $28, for being a homeowner. I have used the same agent since I moved to PA in 2003... I have my homeowner's insurance and car insurance through the same agent, different companies. I …

I just called them now trying to add a mailing address because I don't want my mail to go to my current residence address, where there is a shared mailbox and I'm worried people might open my mail and stuff. They insisted that I can only have one residential and mailing address, and if I change it to my friend's Markham mailing address the policy address will have to change and apparently rate group as well. Markham is way higher than Waterloo. So they did, but they kept Waterloo as the rating territory. And they went on with all the bullcrap about this and that and how we're not going to cover you if anything happens and your drivers license address is this and that... …

600HP and 630lb-ft from 2500-5500RPM on stock engine? So, if I get an internship and make $10k next summer, who thinks this is a good idea? http://www.ls1turbo.com.au/ The car fitted with it ran a 10.53 @ 137MPH, and it's heavier than the GTO... so that means under 10.5 in the quarter I may need to upgrade the tranny, but other than that it can run on the stock motor, and has a good warranty.

Maybe I'm one of the only ones, but I enjoy cruises that include _driving_ ... not just sitting & walking around looking at parked cars. The Sunday I returned from my road trip to the Eastern states (August 21), I attended the Elgin National Road Race Show, which included a "lap" that followed the old Elgin National Road Race. With that in mind...& knowing that high gas prices will be a factor, is anyone interested in doing a "weekend cruise" of sorts...? We'd drive a scenic route. One is in Illinois [I can plan routes for WI & IN/MI if anyone is interested]...people can meet up with us anywhere along the way... * IL RT 20 …

Was just searching through for some Motorweek videos...and found this one of a 1990 Pontiac Grand Prix Turbo. Guess I was out of the loop, unaware of the TURBO 3.1L V6. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JGcEqvOgEVw Otherwise, a really interesting review, and WOW, so evident of that awful 80's/90's "GM syndrome" with the visbily clunky and junky interior, KIT car dash lights and buttons, etc. And really love that, uh, "great" braking action of the 1990 ABS system and wonderfully non-sophisticated mushy all-strut W-body suspension. As much as I had to laugh, really brought back fond memories of crusing around in my grandmother's '92 Grand Prix LE sedan--that was still, by…
