My LS comes with a readout for the instant fuel economy average, so I've been keeping track to see how I'm doing on fuel consumption. On two cross-state trips with the AC running and an average speed of about 78 MPH, I have gotten 26.2 and 27.5 mpg (higher mileage coming back because I live at a lower elevation than my hometown). In the city, I'm consistently getting between 18 and 20 mpg depending on how often I goose it from a stop. But if I go to fueleconomy.gov, it says my car should be getting 15/22 under the 2008 revisions and 17/24 under the old. It makes me wonder how accurate the revised EPA fuel economy standards are. Even if I drive like a bat out of hell…

First of all, happy new years everyone! Hope you're all doing well As the title says, time for something new! Already got a '19 Ram for a Daily (I'll upload the pics in a bit), so I don't need my A4, as while it's lighter and more nimble, I've had it for almost 6 years and short of a Big Turbo and center/rear diff's, that's basically it. Going to sell it, then use the $$$ towards another project car, but which one, as I can either replicate one of my own one's as seen here or go for something else. Narrowed it down to a few simple things: RWD Manual Coupe or Convertible 280whp min. NA (FI down the line) …

I hate to open a Pandora's box and begin a political thread in our forums, but this one hits home where we all live: A proposed tax increase on gasoline to pay for infrastructure improvements to our highways and bridges. The Democrats have not even let the dust settle in Minneapolis and they are already screaming for a tax-increase to pay for the repairs that are 'vital to the Nation'. I say this is another quick dash for the cash and another attempt at slight of hand when they should take another look at the numbers and tell us where the money is going! Take a look at the chart on the clicky... http://www.gaspricewatch.com/usgastaxes.asp The U.S. Government coll…

Anything is a go, yet with that said I would like you to look into your own history of auto's and what you feel would be respectable rides. We can always do a list of ubber luxury hot rod rides, I would like this to be more of a common persons ride list. With that I will start it off with what I would have on this list: 1987 Monte Carlo SS Aero Coupe 1987 Buick Regal GNX Grand National 1991 GMC Syclone 1992 GMC Typhoon 20…

Not sure which is the best forum to stick this- would be nice to be seen publicly- move thread at will. Nice overview of many of the GM plants, esp with the names from the heights of GM's success. 'NUMMI' may have significance to those into Vibes & matrixes, but 'Fremont' built the cars people treasure & collect. This info (and more) will eventually get into the upcoming C&G Wiki, but this is especially nice because there are numerous pics. Even driving by these sites seldom gives any indication of the size of these complexes. http://canadianponcho.activeboard.com/index.spark?aBID=118110&p=3&topicID=37134625&page=1&sort=newestFirst

Yes, tonight sometime soon Top Gear goes off of the airwaves. No, not for good (hopefully), but at some time tonight season 19 does officially end ... maybe. Of course, since Top Gear always leaves you with horrible between-season withdrawls (the long wait for the new season was like going through heroin, cocaine, oxycodone, and smoking joneses all at the same time), you eventually find yourself searching between seasons for something else to watch that will fill the void until the new one debuts. Besides watching the take-it-or-leave-it 'Mericun version that airs on the History Channel, YouTube has begun to offer quite a lot in the way of auto-related programming that is…

Any 2007 or 2008 GMC Sierra/Chevy Silverado owners that would like to post here (or send me a PM) about what kind of average MPG you've been getting? It would be helpful to my inquiring mind - I'm curious as to what "real world" MPG numbers look like. It probably would be good to know whether you have a reg/ext/crew cab, 2wd or 4wd, and what size engine you've got under the hood. Thanks in advance!

Impulse purchase to help ease the pain... Been f@#king stressed and depressed for the past month or so...don't know why. Yesterday I was in a $h!ty mood...Watching Indy and ALMS with my dad brought my mood up a little bit, but I was still pretty down. My buddy picked up an RC car the other day which quickly refueled my desire for one...I've always wanted one, but never really pursued it too much. I figured now was as good a time as ever to pick one up...to pick me up. So I did.

Man is it great to take a shower indoors. Yes, I love just about everything about tent camping (except for RAIN, which mercifully did not mar this weekend), but the comforts of home cannot be beat. I think I'm "camped out" for a while... unless Labor Day weekend has an impeccable weather forecast. For sure, after that, my season is over (although camp stays open through Halloween). So, what did I miss?

I am very careful in the presence of automotive journalists to not describe myself as such. I feel it is somewhat disrespectful to those who do this job as their main career when I do it as more of a hobby that barely makes enough money to cover costs. There is a running joke amongst the automotive journalist crowd that any car, no matter what it is, could be made better if it was made available in a wagon, with all-wheel-drive, a diesel, and a manual transmission... all in one package. This week, my rental car was a new VW Passat. Driving between Pittsburgh and Columbus, I glanced down at the computer generated average mpg... I was pulling about 37mpg. The rest of t…

This has been an albatross of sorts for me professionally. I started it back in late July last year, but with all the rain last summer, a few months off for winter, minor surgery, and other jobs tossed into the mix, I did not finish construction on this until yesterday. It was fraught with unknowns. Tho the plans were done up by an architect, he never shot a single elevation, and ultimately 25 yards of dirt had to be removed. Tho he spec'd the upright posts as cedar- he never spec'd the horizontal wall slats as anything. They turned out to be cedar, too, and the material costs ballooned. All the thinner horizontals had to be ripped- you cannot get 3" wide cedar planks. T…

http://www.philly.com/philly/news/br...All=y#comments It's not often that Philadelphia police are called to jump-start a stolen auto case. Especially one four decades old. But thanks to their efforts, a Texas man has recovered a treasured convertible stolen in Philadelphia nearly 42 years ago. Bob Russell never gave up hope that his stolen 1967 Austin Healey would be found one day. Russell was a graduate student at Temple University in 1970 when he parked the English roadster at an apartment complex after a date with his future wife. When he went out to the lot the next morning, the Austin was gone. Because he was a cash-strapped student, it was a double whammy. He…

Ahh- the smell of model cement !! I spent some time as a kid building plastic models- if any of us hasn't, I'd be surprised. I built maybe 15. When I moved out, my mom tossed 'em all off my 3-tier shelf- I wasn't really upset I suppose. I do have a half dozen of the boxes, as they were usually packed with odds-n-ends; them, I still have. I don't think we've done a thread on this, so perhaps some pics of some favorites would be interesting. Some of mine I built (via Google): The Tom Daniels stuff was fantastic. Others were mostly classics- '30s-40s stuff, nothing from the '50s/60s. Anyone else?

With my never ending quest to improve my credit score as quickly as possible so that I can refinance the Camaro at a lower rate (have no credit rating right now). Anyways, with the holidays right around the corner, surely an increased number of stores will be offering interest free financing (if paid in 60 days, 6 months, 12 months, etc.). With that in mind, and with that being a third line of credit (auto loan, just got approved for a credit card), my credit score should go up quite quickly within the next 6-8 months. What would be really nice is if the financing would be available at low dollar amounts so that I could get the no interest financing at a couple of stor…

I found a red, 1985 Camaro setting not to far from home yesterday. It's been slightly modified with a front fascia from a early '90s Camaro, which needs paint, and a hood from an IROC-Z, which needs the hinges fixed. Other than the two hiccups I pointed out (I'm not making much mention of the upholstery, which is only torn in one or two places, which I don't much care about, and the missing headliner, which you don't notice because of the t-tops), the car is very solid, is rust and ding free, and, except for the bumper, has great paint with plenty of sheen. Now, on the door handles I noticed a few interesting anomalies that read "Turbo." Now, correct me if I'm wrong, bu…

Company paid for it so I took the opportunity to come down to LA and get some continuing education credits at the AIA (read "geek") convention. SENSORY OVERLOAD..not the convention but LA, rather. The convention is at the Convention Center downtown. It was probably one of the most powerful movies I've ever seen If anyone is feeling down, see this movie and you will feel better...we don't have it that bad. A co-worker has also lent me "Shawshank Redemption" and "Primal Fear." They are mid-90s movies I've never seen. Okay so I went to this carshow in Phoenix today, and it was friggin sweet! I saw basically the tightest Cadillac CTS-V of my life: it had a supercharged and stroked LS6 with built internals! Also, the rest of the car was extremely nice. It had a borla exhaust i believe the guy said, and some 20 inch wheels that I would actually have dropped. The car was still very clean, and it even had nos, which is sort of cool but I dont think it was really necessary. The guy said it dynoed 550 hp without the nos, and runs 12s at the track. Needless to say, I was very impressed. The only thing I didnt like was he put 2 Cadillac V symbols on the back of the car, and the 20 inch …

I won't say I never do it. Sometimes my "soft spot" gets affected and I will throw the remaining change or that rare dollar bill into the jar when I go up to the counter at a Starbucks or a pizza place. Tips are for table service. Until the last 5 or 10 years, I rarely saw tip jars at places where you walk up to get your coffee, tea, sandwich or pizza. Now they are everywhere. I don't really dig it and, if you use a credit card, there's that space for a tip that you either fill in or zero out in front of them. Talk about being put on the spot. I will only drop in money 10 % to 20 % of the time. That is if they are genuinely friendly and attentive or if they were…

Got into a car accident today. I was taking a left leaving a shopping mall & the car (an '02 Sienna minivan -> damn yota's) across from me ran his stop sign. My '04 Malibu took it in the passenger front-corner -- HARD. Both airbags deployed (what a treat that was -- do you like smoke?). Bumper was crushed, hood caved in, fendor damaged. For those that aren't familiar with the Malibu, the pass.-side airbag is hidden behind the dash -- and when it deploys, it punches a hole in your dash to explode outward. I calc $3k in parts on the inside of my car alone (2 airbags + dash + labor). Car was still drivable -- but it did get pounded -- and NO I didn't take pict…

Inflation: not good, and has a clear reason why it happens. Historically it's easiest seen in the worst times. Germany after WWI. Industry had been destroyed, therefor minimal wealth generation through manufacturing, mining, and farming. Paper money was printed to let government pay for it's expenditures because tax income was very minimal, ~1% of their budget at times. This caused their money to be devalued, like stock of a business that was losing money, with no hope of growth. the smartest german citizens bought gold and other currency before Hyper inflation happened. The Sunday before my pacemaker replacement surgery, I took my '87 MC LS to get washed and then drove it out to the heated garage where the older 4 MCs are stored to leave it since I wouldn't be able to drive for a week. During the drive between the car wash and the garage, a song came on the air that seems to "pop up" just when I need it. For whatever reason, whenever I hear the entire song on the radio, I get the "it's going to be all OK" feeling. The song? "Drift Away" ... and it doesn't matter if it is Dobie Gray's original version or Uncle Cracker with Dobie Gray. It is one song that tells me everything is going to be fine. You guys have all been unwilling witnesses to my fruitless search for a decent plow truck, and distractions with more interesting stuff as I look for ways to get things rolling on my personal automotive front. Sorry about that if it transferred my frustration into yours! When is he going to freakin' buy something?!! Well, maybe not until I sell my daily driver Tahoe. I'm unlikely to find what I'm looking for within budget, so that means I have to find a way to increase the budget, and selling the Tahoe is probably the most effective move I can make on that front. Of course that means I have to push the wagon back into service for a while which I hadn't planned on. G…

I was chatting with a girl I went to school with on Facebook this morning. Last year, she and her husband were looking to replace their Hyundai Elantra. They had been disappointed with the fuel mileage after being fooled by the numbers on the sticker, so I spoke up and recommended the Chevrolet Sonic. They ended up buying an orange Sonic LTZ 1.4t hatch, with sunroof and a manual, after testing it out for themselves. I was telling her about my desire to research a possible replacement for my Patriot, and I asked her for an update on their Chevy. Her husband believes there is a leak in the heater core... I am not sure of the symptoms. The radio stays on sometimes af…

An excerpt from today's San Francisco Chronicle: Ron Patrick is approaching the age of 50, a time when many men begin thinking about minutiae like pensions and second homes and third cars. But Patrick is far more interested in telling you why it is that he has stuck a big jet engine in the back of a prosaic silver Volkswagen. He's standing out in a parking lot, waving his arms with wild enthusiasm, pointing at the car as if he were a 15-year-old who's just had his first ride in a Corvette, his eyes spinning in delight. This car consumes him, he loves the completely outrageous idea behind it, and for a moment, his infectious mood makes you think, gee, anybody could do t…

It's orange, it's cool and it's a domestic. Keep looking at the pics, if you don't know what it is I will show you the name of the car at the end. Do you know what brand it is yet? If you don't know what it is yet, this next pic will tell you. I hope you enjoyed the pics!

I was thinking of a scenario with regards to the auto industry and government regulation of it. WHAT IF... everything were the same, as far as world events... the gas crises, safety and emissions regulations all happened exactly as in real life... but CAFE, or any form of it, were never thought of? What would today's vehicle lineups look like? Would market forces have been such that things would look pretty much the same... or would the car world look completely different? If you have a few minutes, let us speculate...

Went to the gym today, and the hot shower water dried my hands up pretty bad. After that, I went to the grocery store. In the soap aisle, there was a rack with some kind of hand lotion I'd never heard of. They had all the different flavors sitting there in a row at shoulder height with "tester" written on the bottle, so I thought what the heck. I chose the unscented flavor, put my hand under the nozzle, and pushed down. Instead of squirting down into my hand, it shot straight out onto the center of my chest the size of a quarter and left a trail down to my navel. I looked like a friend had just done something very naughty to me. I immediately looked around to see…

I immediately fell in love with this on EBAY. It isn't good shape but it is wearing 427 badges. I couldn't find any place to decode the VIN to find out if it was original. 68 Caprice Wagon 427?? And this which I had never heard of before. 92 Lumina Z34 Earnhardt Edition #23 of 25

MOMBASA, Kenya -- U.S. Navy snipers opened fire and killed three pirates holding an American captain at gunpoint, delivering the skipper unharmed and ending a five-day high-seas hostage drama on Easter Sunday. Capt. Richard Phillips was in "imminent danger" of being killed before snipers shot the pirates in an operation authorized by President Barack Obama, Vice Adm. Bill Gortney said. He said the pirates were armed with AK-47s and small-caliber pistols and were pointing the rifles at the captain when the commander of the nearby USS Bainbridge gave the order to open fire. Gortney, the commander of U.S. Naval Forces Central Command, said the White House had given "ve…

ive been rather quiet lately here on C&G, mainly because they ramped up surf watch at work so there are only 3 sites we can hit up on downtime. none of which i am entertained by in the least bit. this past weekend however 3 friends and i went on a 2 day backpacking excursion through the grand canyon of the east, Linville Gorge. started out friday around 10 from the trail head and worked our way day via conely cove trail and met up with the linville gorge trail from there. it was a great interesting hike to say the least. temps friday were nuts, barely topped 45, was to drop to the high 20's low 30's that night with winds of 25-35 and 45 mph gusts (luckily we were in t…

* Hard to believe the 2012 Monte Carlo Nationals in Johnson City TN were a WEEK ago already (&, for that matter, a year ago, I was nearing the end of my 9,000+ mile road trip). I had an awesome time last week/weekend! I'm glad I accepted Rob's generous offer to drive me back'n'forth; it was great to get away. Believe it or not, I only took 2 pictures (see below). I'm not sure why I didn't take more DURING the drives; maybe because I was enjoying the scenery too much. I didn't take more pictures AT the MC Nats because it was TOO hot to stand in the sun long enough to take pictures. Besides, others took pictures of the event. Award winners: http://www.montecarl…

"Once you trade in your vehicle to the dealership, you typically don’t have much power over where it ends up. And that’s usually not a problem, unless your truck ends up in an ISIS propaganda picture with your company’s decal still pasted on the doors. That’s exactly what happened to Texas plumber Mark Oberholtzer, who sold his company’s F-250 truck to a Ford dealer in 2013. While he tried to remove the company’s decal before the transaction, a salesman allegedly told him to leave it to the dealership to handle so as not to ruin the original paint. But the decal was never removed, and the truck was shipped off to Turkey before it somehow ended up in the hands of ISI…

From Wrestling-Edge.com: WWE.com is reporting that Eddie Guerrero has passed away. Guerrero was found dead this morning in his Minneapolis hotel room. We here at Wrestling Edge pass our condolences to the Guerrero family, his friends and World Wrestling Entertainment. More details on Eddie's tragic passing will be forthcoming. At only 38, this former multi-time and multi-federation champion was in the prime of his life. And my favorite of all time. Eddie, you'll be sorely missed.

So I hop back on syty.net (My rare visit to the site) to see a post about my old GMC Syclone up for sale in NY. I owned #1616 from '97-'01 and sold it with 33k on the clock. It now has 43k and the guy had it listed at $8500. I emailed him last night to find out it was already sold. Damn the luck!

I figured someone will eventually have an abbreviated term for this, much like DWI, etc. So I'll just go with TWD for now. Wow, how this one makes me shake my head at the completely pathetic drivers out there: "Texting driver doesn't notice police" The link: OH! You're pulling ME over! - Full story below: A young motorist had a simple answer when police asked why he didn't pull over earlier during a 28km pursuit. The 22-year-old said hadn't noticed the marked police cruiser following him because he was busy texting on his mobile phone, police say. Officers had first noticed the man when he shot past them on the Eastlink Freeway in southwest Melbourne at a s…

The "Worst Case Scenario" thread brought back a memory of a TV show that I thought you might all be interested in. FOG was mentioning that it shouldn't be hard to retrofit cars to run on hydrogen. Turns out he's right, as long as the car is carburetted. The show Mythbusters was testing methods of saving fuel. You've all seen the crappy infomercials, so they were testing if any of these products were actually worth money. To test, they had an early 90's Accord, representing fuel injected cars, and a late 70s Oldsmobile Omega, representing carburetted cars. They tried all the fuel saving methods on both cars, and they all failed, some even made the mileage worse. Then the…

WTF, right? Check it: >>"For luxury cars with very high sticker prices, depreciation claims more money than it does for mass-market models that cost a lot less to begin with. That's true even for luxury models that retain their value very well. Over five years, the Porsche 911 GT3 — the tenth most expensive car to own — depreciates just 41% from its starting MSRP. By contrast, the Lincoln MKZ, the 10th least expensive-to-own luxury model, sheds about 67% of its base price. But the MKZ sells for around $30,000, compared to $106,000 for the 911 GT3. 67% of $30,000 is a lot less than 41% of $106,000 — that works out to $20,100 versus $43,460, respectively."<< …

Check this out: The quote that makes this post worthy: The Library of Congress estimated that (of his record collection just from 1948 to 1967) only 17% of it is available for sale to the public in ANY media. That's staggering. I surfed onto this site where the video was embedded. http://jumpwithjoey....01_archive.html

What you've seen on TV and in the papers pales in comparison to what it's really like after Hurricane Sandy hit us. There are thousands of people who have lost everything... houses washed into the sea, entire neighborhoods burned to the ground, loved ones killed and injured. It will take many years to rebuild, in some case never at all. You can see some of the pictures here http://www.wbab.com/gallery/weather/hurricanes/images-hurricane-sandy/g568/#last So we find ourselves hitting every avenue we can to help raise funds and get help for the victims of Hurricane Sandy here on LI. New York AutoFest is putting on a car show fundraiser on November 25 in Commack, NY with …

UNDATED -- A 96-year-old Florida man is recovering after an otter went on the attack. Morrie Denton said he was just out for a stroll when the animal struck. "I just looked down on the ground and I saw this little animal walking across and he walked real slow like," Denton said. Denton said without warning, near a wetland area, an otter clamped down on his ankle. Two good Samaritans came to the elderly man's aid, but the otter then turned its focus on them. "After he grabbed me by the foot and I fell, he was all over me, on this hand and then on this one,” Denton said. A good Samaritan stopped to help Denton, but struggled to pull the otter off. Passerby Chris Jans…

Jason Stein Automotive News Europe December 10, 06:01 CET Markets are booming. Factories are expanding. Dealers are lining up to be considered for new franchises. And you can’t see the end in any of it. This isn’t the model we’ve grown accustomed to in Europe of late. But it’s real. How refreshing is it to sit with a leading executive in Europe and have him tell you he is going to exceed every expectation in the coming years? How refreshing it is to be in the game in Russia. General Motors Europe President Carl-Peter Forster has a vision. It is more plants, new agreements and higher revenues. And he wasn’t talking about western Europe. Truth be told, t…
