Interesting footnote in automotive history, but this is priced like it can levitate. Note they show no pics of the interior (you can find them elsewhere on the net), because overall this car has all the physical appeal of a carnival ride. Still, it does command a good degree of mythicality. http://findyourclassiccar.com/2013/06/20/1959-opel-p1-experimental-best-mpg-ever/ http://images.thecarconnection.com/med/1959-opel-p1-experimental-prototype-gas-mileage-record-holder_100315433_m.jpg

This car can do no wrong....it's got to be one of the best looking, aggressive hatches out there....I want one. I really like this crisp styling direction GM is going in with these cars...looks way more expensive than it is. Can you imagine if Saturn marketed one of these?....it would do so much for their cool factor.

The teasers don't really reveal much, except that it appears that the next gen Astra will probably look sportier than the current model (which looks to be a trend the Opel division began with the Insignia and current Corsa). Why GM can't realize what a good match these next gen products would be for Pontiac is beyond me. The next gen products would have to be decontented somewhat to become Pontiacs (and GM needs to ensure that they're not outpowered by their Chevy platform mates), but not as much as they would need to be to become Saturns. It's time GM paired Opel with a division that has similar brand characteristics: edgy, sporty, and aspirational. The first time Opel w…

If you live across the pond in Europe, you will also be able to place your order the day of the reveal. It's world premiere is still a ways off, when it will bow in Frankfurt, come September. Vauxhall Corsa 4x4 shapes up The Luton firm look to get tough on the supermini sector with new 4x4. By Dan Strong, 14th May 2008 www.autoexpress.co.uk It's the latest 4x4 that’s promising to take Vauxhall on a journey into uncharted territory... These are the first pictures of the eagerly anticipated four-wheel-drive Corsa, a supermini SUV which is set to follow in the wheeltracks of the Antara when it goes on sale early in 2010. We first revealed plans to produce the go-anywhere model in Issue 964, but we’ve had to wait until now before we got to see it in the flesh. The rugged-looking newcomer, spied in prototype form on this Spanish transporter, is set to …

GM Luton builds 500,000th Vivaro 20 June 2007 | Link to Original Article @ JustAuto Production at General Motors Europe's Luton commercial vehicle plant reached a significant milestone when the plant's 500,000th van came off the line. The red Vauxhall Vivaro SWB panel van was the half millionth vehicle produced at the General Motors Manufacturing (GMM) plant under a joint manufacturing agreement established in 2001, under which GM builds all European specification low-roof versions of the Vivaro for both its Vauxhall and Opel brands, as well as slightly restyled versions for Renault and Nissan. Holden is making no secret about examining a diesel option for Commodore. The one sticking point, Holden insiders say, is the availability of suitable modern turbodiesel from within GM's 'network'. "We don't have anything firm on the plate," a Holden spokesperson told CarPoint Confidential. "GM has both small and large capacity diesels available but the missing part of the equation has been in the middle… We’re looking all around the world," he said. Development is reported progressing apace on new GM V6 and V8 turbodiesels in the USA. Aimed at the next generation of US-market pickups and SUVs, the engines are all-alloy OHC designs with a projected displacement (per cyl…

German union: Another 1,000 jobs at risk at GM's Opel BERLIN -- General Motors Corp.'s Adam Opel AG unit could cut another 1,000 jobs in Europe because of slowing demand for its Astra compact, labor representatives said Tuesday. Rainer Einenkel, head of the works council at Opel's factory in Bochum, Germany, said the carmaker was considering axing one shift at one of three plants making the Astra. The shift could be cut at Bochum or at Opel plants in Antwerp, Belgium, or Ellesmere Port, Britain. "That is a very real danger," Einenkel said. Opel said it had no current plans to cut a shift but added it could "adjust production capacity to customer demand" in future as …

Opel, the German subsidiary of hard-hit US auto maker General Motors, is back in the black, after putting into place a savings program that will eventually cost the company 9,000 jobs. In a report based on internal group forecasts, German business newspaper Handelsblatt said Opel looks set to break even this year. Adam Opel, which comprises solely the German activities, was fractionally in the red, but the Opel brand itself, which includes factories outside Germany, is beginning to make money. Plant closings in North America Meanwhile, GM's European arm, GM Europe, is set to have more than halved its full-year losses this year to $300 million (256…

hello peoples, Wondering if anyone can give me some ideas on performance mods for a 2003 opel astra 2.2 Sri. Currently got a dual cat back remus setup. Thats all. Im wanting to change the air intake and maybe chip it. No sure wether powerchip "piggy back" their chip on mine or download their software on mine. Not sure wether the claimed 12% is really noticible or should i spend the $1000 AUS on something else. Does anyone think a POD is a way to go? If so what make. I know your thinking "there is no point to over mod its not the turbo", it hurts me too (every day). Any help would be greatly appriciated! Great forum too by the way. Respect from OZ.

This article appeared in Auto Express at the end of September. I didn't see it posted anywhere on this forum, so I decided to go ahead and initiate a topic with it. Link: Auto Express: Astra's New Family. If this article is accurate, then GM could have used the Astra line to transform and rebuild Pontiac as well as Buick. A German police force that spent €25 million on new sporty cars found that not only was the visibility rubbish for chases - the fancy seats were so narrow the cops could not get in while wearing their guns, truncheons and other equipment. The embarrassing mishap came to light in a poll conducted by police union GdP, which showed that many officers in the western German state of Hesse preferred their old wheels – the Opel Zafira. The Hesse Interior Ministry ordered 800 of the swish new models – Opel's Insignia Sports Tourer – in a long-term deal at the end of 2010. The ministry says that 200 of the cars have been delivered so far, but it is yet to be decided whether…

I am totally smitten by that little hottie, the Opel Adam, after seeing the Opel press photos and two videos showing the car in motion. The Chevrolet Spark is a hideous, cheap little POS compared to this sexy little guy. AND it's a 3-door! tangent/You know, that's what the people voted for when they chose the Beat a few years ago in the GM contest asking people to choose among 3 Chevy minicar concepts. Then GM pulls an old-school "bait and switch" by bringing the 5-door Spark to production./tangent Apparently the Adam is a bit shorter but wider than a MINI Cooper, with up to 99 horsepower out of a choice of three 4 cylinder engines. I love the detailing on this ca…

Spyshots of a heavily disguised Agila reveal not a single inch of sheetmetal, but exposed headlights and the overall shape of the new model reveal a Panda rival that abandons the WagonR+'s boxy proportions for a morte wedge-shaped profile with a strong resemblance to the new Corsa. Like the Panda, however, the new Agila maximizes space with a tall, upright greenhouse and near-vertical tailgate. While GM Daewoo is working on a new microcar architecture, the new Agila remains a joint project with Suzuki, assembled by GM Manufacturing Poland with Opel powertrains but based on Suzuki's flexible A-segment platform shared with the Swift and SX4. Link Apologies if its been already posted. Basically the article states that Holden will drop the Euro-sourced Astra and move to a Korean-sourced replacement in a two-tier line up. The range will be based on the upcoming Chevrolet Cruze (Chevy Cobalt/Chevrolet Lacetti replacement)/Daewoo Nubira. 1st tier will be a lower-range spec along the same lines as the current Viva (Daweoo Nubira/Chevrolet Lacetti), 2nd tier will be further up-sec, different suspension and drivetrains and will be similar to what Holden has done with the Holden Captiva/ Captiva MaXX (Opel Antara). Article: "First (Saturn - Opel) Astra Sedan Leaves Polish Production Line" http://www.theautochannel.com/news/2007/08/27/059888.html My beef with this article is, of course, that they called it a Saturn-Opel Astra sedan, but Saturn doesn't get the sedan. Very misleading. Still, it's a good looking car, and Saturn will probably get the next gen version, IMO.

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Germany's economics minister ruled out any attempt by General Motors to include an option to buy back majority control of Opel as part of a deal to give up over 50 percent of its German unit in exchange for state aid. "This is incompatible with our views and cannot happen," Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg told German Sunday paper Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung in an interview. The comments could suggest that Belgian financial investor RHJ International (RHJI.BR) may have problems with its bid if the company is viewed as only a short-term player. Germany is expected to shoulder the bulk of the billions in loan guarantees as part of a deal, an…

In an overly publicized outburst at a cabinet meeting earlier this month, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin accused General Motors of "scornful" behavior after the American company canceled a plan to sell off a German car maker to a Russian-Canadian consortium. "The last-minute refusal to complete the Opel deal is not harmful to our interests, but it shows that our American partners have a very original culture when dealing with counterparts," Mr. Putin said. However, there's no need to worry that Mr. Putin's feigned indignation will seriously harm the already chilly U.S.-Russian relations despite the obvious harm it has done to the survival prospects of Russia's ba…

I've been preaching this for months now, as Moses said to Pharaoh, "Let my People go". Feb. 18 (Bloomberg) -- General Motors Corp. said it’s determined to keep its Opel unit, Europe’s third-biggest carmaker, even as politicians clamor for a spinoff from the U.S. company to safeguard 55,000 jobs in the region. GM would contemplate selling a stake in the division or allowing it to seek a partner, but still regards it as the company’s “core business in Europe,” regional president Carl-Peter Forster said in a statement today. Decisions will not be made," spokesman Ulrich Wilhelm said in a statement. Opel is seeking 1.8 billion euros ($1.93 billion) in loan guarantees from the German federal and regional governments in case its U.S. parent GM falls into bankruptcy.…

BERLIN (AFP) – General Motors said Wednesday it wanted to cut around 10,000 jobs at its European division Opel a day after the US car maker stunned the auto sector by scrapping plans to sell the German-based unit. GM wants to slash costs by 30 percent at Opel, which would mean the elimination of about 10,000 jobs from a workforce of 55,000, GM vice president John Smith told European journalists during a telephone news conference. General Motors said Tuesday it was abandoning a project to sell Opel to Canadian auto parts manufacturer Magna International and state-owned Russian bank Sberbank, saying it would implement its own restructuring at the unit. The decision sp…

GM Says Selling Opel Report Is Speculation William Maley - Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com June 9, 2011 General Motors is on the offensive with a report about them possibly selling Opel to another automaker. In a article published by Auto Bild and Spiegel, GM is considering whether to sell Opel due to management losing confidence in Opel returning to profitability. The article also points out that GM can use Daewoo to engineer and source small cars and low emission engines, something Opel has provided GM. So, who are the possible buyers for Opel? The article points to the Chinese automakers and Volkswagen as possible buyers. Volkswagen could do it ea…

Until about six weeks ago GM Europe's Opel-Vauxhall was making steady progress towards sunlit uplands, with breakeven in 2011 and a nice little profit promised next year. But Europe's sudden economic skid towards crisis has undermined prospects for car sales next year, and suddenly the forecasts are awash with red ink. The alarm bells are ringing and General Motors is parachuting Detroit heavy hitters into Opel headquarters in Germany to take control. Now, experts are saying Opel-Vauxhall (Opel-badged cars sell across mainland Europe; the same cars with Vauxhall logos sell in Britain, its biggest European market) must slash costs again, shut factories and maybe reopen t…

November 22, 2008: 09:46 AM EST NEW YORK (AFP)--General Motors Corp. (GM) will neither fire workers nor close or sell factories at its German Opel unit, the president of GM Europe said in an interview to be published Sunday. Opel has sought loan guarantees from the German government "but it is not bankrupt," Carl-Peter Forster told the Welt am Sonntag Sunday newspaper. "Closures, sales of factories or job cuts are not on the agenda," he said. The regional parliament in the German state of Hesse has voted unanimously to provide Opel with up to EUR500 million in loan guarantees in the event that General Motors declared bankruptcy. GM has said it will run out of ca…

GM: Opel spinoff won't end product partnership Dave Guilford Automotive News March 2, 2009 General Motors vows that its tightly knit product development partnership with Adam Opel AG will continue, despite GM's plans to sell a minority stake in the German automaker. "Opel remains an integral and important part of GM's global operations and will continue as such in the future," GM said in a statement Friday, Feb. 27. Teams in Germany have produced GM's global compact and mid-sized vehicle platforms. The Buick LaCrosse coming this summer is the first U.S. vehicle built on the new mid-sized platform. The Chevrolet Cruze, due in mid-2010, will be built on the c…

GM's Opel set for profit in 2006 Sun Nov 26, 2006 10:34am ET FRANKFURT, Nov 26 (Reuters) - General Motor's German car maker Opel will make a profit this year, its sales chief told a German magazine. "GM is moving towards profit in Europe," Alain Visser told German news magazine Focus. "In 2006, Opel is clearly in profit." Visser said that the car brand's image with consumers had improved in recent years. "17 percent of all car buyers in Germany and Europe consider buying an Opel. With this result, we are just under Volkswagen but significantly above Ford ." He said he was pleased with demand for the group's Corsa model. "We have about 150,000 orders so far - 50 per…

Tony Lewin Automotive News Europe June 19, 2008 15:39 CET GM's new Insignia will be the first production car to feature a dual-function frontal camera with traffic sign recognition, says Opel Vauxhall. The system, supplied by Hella, uses a single screen-mounted camera to feed separate processors for both road-sign recognition and lane-departure warning. However, premium automaker BMW may just beat GM to the honor of being first to market with a system that can identify signs. BMW will debut its system "later this year," said technology spokeswoman Katharina Bölsterl. She declined to specify which model the system would first appear on, and would not conf…

17 November 2009 By MARTON PETTENDY A CHEVROLET version of GM Holden’s ill-fated Commodore-based Pontiac G8 could soon be confirmed for North American showrooms. The move would mark the return of a significant US export program for Holden in the wake of arch-rival Ford's announcement it will vie with the Statesman-based Caprice patrol car for Stateside police car business. Expectations of a Chevrolet iteration of the Australian-made sedan, which was discontinued when GM axed the Pontiac brand earlier this year, have increased after the appearance on a Pontiac G8 web forum of an official GM email that refers to the “MY11.5 Chevy Police Program and MY12 Chevy SS”. US w…

BERLIN General Motors Co. wants to move its European headquarters to Germany from Switzerland before the end of the year, an Opel spokesman said Saturday. By moving its headquarters from Zurich to Adam Opel GmbH's Ruesselsheim headquarters in Germany, the company wants to strengthen its subsidiary Opel, spokesman Ulrich Weber said. GM's Chevrolet brand will continue to keep its headquarters in Zurich. Last week, GM called off the planned sale of Germany-based Opel to car parts maker Magna and Russian lender Sberbank. German Chancellor Angela Merkel had favored that deal to save jobs. Merkel now says she wants GM to present a restructuring plan that gives Opel Europe …

This leaked image was on the World Car Fans website today. This would make a nice premium compact hatch for either Pontiac or Buick. I didn't really see Buick selling an upscale hatchback, but this design has changed my mind (although Buick would still need a sedan version also). It seems to have a more upscale exterior appearance than the current Astra. Link: Visit My Website Source: World Car Fans

By Bryan Nesbitt Executive Director GM Europe Design American motorists may be interested in a zippy Opel concept we unveiled this week at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The Opel Antara GTC is Opel’s interpretation of the crossover segment. It's tough, athletic, and emotional. This car is a perfect example of how Opel (badged Vauxhall in the U.K.) is exploring its design language as it applies to different segments. First, from a distance, notice the coupe upper and the SUV lower. This proportion is intended to visually communicate driving adventure. Second, Antara GTC -- which stands for Gran Turismo Crossover -- is immediately recognizable as an Opel due to c…

German automaker Opel announced today it has launched a new design competition and encouraged all entrants to use social media as a tool to develop the designs for future cars. The competition, aimed at both interior and exterior design, will culminate with the announcement of the two winners at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2011. The first stage of the competition challenges European design students to develop a car interior that is “a lounge in motion”. “What I’m excited about is for students to understand our brand,” stated Liz Wetzel, Director of Interior Design, Opel/Vauxhall, “because it is moving – it’s becoming much more dynamic, much more passionate and our c…

New Opel Corsa GSi: Powerful Performance and Subtle Sportiness * 150 PS turbo gasoline engine available for three and five-door models * Legendary GSi concept receives a modern update Rüsselsheim — The theme of the new Opel Corsa GSi is ‘more substance than show’. In contrast to the Opel Corsa OPC, which was launched a few months ago, the new GSi radiates subtle sportiness rather than uncompromising high-performance, and will be unveiled at the Barcelona Motor Show (June 7–17, 2007). The GSi's powerful 1.6 ECOTEC turbo engine produces 110 kW/150 PS at 5000 rpm, positioning the new sporty model between the Corsa Sport 1.7 CDTI (125 PS) and the high-performance C…

The Opel GT makes its world premiere at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show (March 2 – 12), start of sales is scheduled for spring 2007. “The GT is a powerful addition to our range of attractive…

This is what happens when you bite the hand that feeds you. Don't be surprised if Opel headquarters are moved to the UK in the future. Vauxhall remained loyal, and may reap the benefits of that. Henderson refuses to talk about future of individual plants November 10, 2009 21:46 CET RUESSELSHEIM (Reuters) -- General Motors Co. crushed hopes on Tuesday that Opel would play a greater role within its vast empire. CEO Fritz Henderson also offered vague assurances that Detroit would give its European carmaker more freedom. No Vauxhall VX for Britain Somewhere in England, Jeremy Clarkson weeps (at least I'd like to think so). British performance fans should prepare themselves for a disappointment. Even though General Motors' 'global' sports car will make it to Europe badged the Opel GT, it won't be coming to the UK. While bosses were originally keen to bring the two-seater GT here, Vauxhall can't make financial sense of converting the rear-wheel-drive model to right-hand drive and fitting Griffin badging. After taking into account promotional costs and the number of likely sales, they decided we Brits could do without it. Read "Figures don't add up for next VX" @ Auto Express
