SAAB Post Show Event Only about half of any major auto show actually takes place on the convention center floor. To get a closer look at the action journalists are usually invited to after show events. I attended one such even hosted by Saab to show off more of the new 2011 Saab 9-5. The Car: Before I get to any event details, let me talk about the car. The new 9-5 is simply stunning in person. It has a silhouette and roofline unlike anything else on the road today, yet it is instantly recognizable as a Saab. The interior feels at once retro 60's chic and ultra modern at the same time. While you can pick out the GM Epsilon II parts if you look closely, anyone u…

In fact all cars at the turn of the 20th century were convertibles, but the death-knell of the convertible was dealt by the Dodge Brothers Victory 6 with its revolutionary all-steel monocoque body affixed to a normal ladder type chassis. The convertible has since become the playground for designers who have taken the shape to ever-exciting heights. In fact the convertible became the powder-puff segment of the car market. …

finally some sort of picture for the 9-4x. "Spy photographers have captured the first pictures showing a test mule for the new Saab 9-4X. Designed from the ground up as a Saab — rather than a re-badging exercise — the 2009 9-4X is a collaboration between engineers in Rüsselsheim, Germany and designers in Trollhättan, Sweden." The ignition was in the floor. It had a rear hatchback, not a trunk. The hood was hinged at the front, so it opened away from the windshield. And many of its owners — including Jerry Seinfeld’s character on his long-running sitcom — were intensely loyal. Auto enthusiasts across the country were dismayed by the news Friday that General Motors was planning to shut down Saab, the Swedish carmaker it bought two decades ago, after a deal to sell it fell apart. Even with its modest and steadily declining sales, Saab long stood out as a powerful brand in spite of itself. “It wasn’t designed to be a fashion statement,” said Ron Pinelli, president of Autodata, which tracks ind…

The alliance between Saab and Subaru which created the Impreza-based Saab 9-2X for the US market is about to signal the return of the 96 badge in Europe - and it looks set to be their first 4x4 SUV with a horizontally-opposed diesel power plant. Geneva Preview: More Details Uncovered on Saab Sports Concept Date posted: 02-03-2006 DETROIT — With the Geneva Motor Show less than a month away, Saab insiders have begun to leak additional details about the concept sports car that will be unveiled on March 1. Described as a two-passenger coupe about the size of the Aston Martin DB9, the Saab two-door — which may or may not revive the old Sonett badge — is said to be a pure concept. Contrary to widespread speculation, it is not based on any existing General Motors platform and, unfortunately for Saab aficionados, there appear to be no immediate plans for production. The midsized sedan has been growing in all directions for decades, but soaring fuel prices have customers begging for something smaller. GM is heeding the call as it is preparing a smaller batch of next generation Saabs. The next 9-3 was originally slated to be underpinned by the Epsilon II, but in March GM decided to instead utilize the lower-medium Delta architecture. The Delta platform will also be used for the next-gen Chevy Cruze, which is slated to eventually replace the Cobalt. The end result will be a smaller, lighter, more efficient Swedish sedan. With the 9-3 shrinking, Saab will also need to down-size its planned 9-1, which was originally scheduled to be Delt…

Saab has struggled since GM acquired it in 2000, and sales have been weak. The Swedish automaker posted a 1 percent sales increase in 2005, on par with the industry but down compared to compe…

By Jamie LaReau Automotive News / October 28, 2005 DETROIT-- General Motors is considering a crossover vehicle for its Saab brand. GM would base the vehicle on a Cadillac concept and build it on a new, mid-sized crossover architecture. GM will not say when it plans to unveil its concept model of a Cadillac crossover. [source: Motor Authority] GM ties with Saab will remain in future models The future of Saab is starting to look much brighter, thanks in part to important concessions from General Motors to help it build and design its own range of cars in the future, as well as a likely extension from Swedish courts for its restructuring deadline. For a while it looked as though Saab may go the same way as Pontiac, but its chief engineer is confident the brand will be able to survive without GM. The GM concession being referred to is the investment in the Saab brand over the past few years, which has led to the company today having the best equipment, tools and enginee…

Ok as you all know I keep buying car after car well I really would like to own a modern Saab as the ones I have had were all older, 93 & 99. Well what I have been reading is that 9-3's have squeaking issues soon after new purchase. I mean like in the doors and head liner areas of the car after about 8K miles. What I want to know from you all is that your experience also? Do you have lots of rattle issues with your Saab? I appreciate the help.

Okay first off I will be looking for another car in the next year or so... I was wondering if anyone could give me the link to GM Photo/Wieck for the Saab 9-5 Sport Combi? I would just like to see some super huge photos of it. I can only get 11 up myself but I have a feeling there are more and for some reason or another I do not have acess too. I would also like the link for all the new 2006-2007 Sedan 9-5 photos too. I would just like to get a really good look at the car. I am considering only GM vehicles and would like a SUV/Wagon type vehicle. The Saab 9-5 Sport Combi used in a 5spd speaks to me (2006 only). I also have thought about Buick Enclave, Chevy Equinox Sport …

here is how id fix Saab.. 9-1.. this would be a hardtop coupe model derived from the kappa platform.. it would be a two seater.. this would be simular to the solstice but they would only share doors and the windshield with that car.. it would be built alongside the solstice and sky in wilmington del. 9-2.. current subaru based model would die after the 2007 model year.. 9-2.. this would be sold as a four door sedan and a 5 door wagon, in essence it would be a reskinned Chevrolet Cobalt, it would only share the underbody, windshield and roof with the cobalt sedan.. there would be no stripper model.. it would be built alongside the cobalt and G5 in Lordstown Ohio..…

Saab seems to be the cat of the automotive industry with the number of lives it has. Last we heard from the Swedish company, the company was waiting on approval on a deal with Pang Da and Youngman. However, General Motors was concerned with the deal due to technologies used in Saab vehicles ending up in competitor hands. Now, a new deal to save Saab is in the works. Saab's parent company, Swedish Automotive is in talks with Youngman and a bank in China (possibly Bank of China). The plan according to SaabsUnited is to have Youngman hold 19.9%, the bank with 29.9%, and Swedish Automotive holding the rest. The plan is reportedly in GM's hands, awaiting approval before h…

When GM aquired half of Saab (later to be all of Saab), their cars were still manufactured in Sweden. Currently, the 9-3 and the 9-5 are the only cars manufactured in Sweden. The NG 9-3 will be moved to the Opel plant in Germany and I assume that the 9-5 will be moved as well. With those two cars in Germany, and the 9-7x in America, what is Swedish about Saab? Is there anything at all? The only hope would be if the anticipated 9-4x and 9-1 would be built in Sweden. But the question remains: in the cars that are not manufactured at the Swedish plant, what is Swedish about them?

Koenigsegg Group AB Terminates Agreement For Purchase of Saab DETROIT -- General Motors confirmed today that the proposed sale of its Saab subsidiary to Koenigsegg Group AB was terminated at the discretion of the buyer. "We're obviously very disappointed with the decision to pull out of the Saab purchase," said GM President and CEO, Fritz Henderson. "Many have worked tirelessly over the past several months to create a sustainable plan for the future of Saab by selling the brand and its manufacturing interests to Koenigsegg Group AB. Given the sudden change in direction, we will take the next several days to assess the situation and will advise on the next steps…

Jetting around By Bob Lutz | GM Vice Chairman | Link to Original Post @ GM FastLane Blog Thursday night out at the Oakland County Airport I had the pleasure of helping Saab USA General Manager Steve Shannon introduce the Saab 9-7X Aero and 9-3 at the welcome reception of the Meadow Brook Concours d’Elegance. As you know, Saab was “born from jets,” so I flew my Aero L-39 ZO “Albatros,” a demilitarized Czech-built fighter jet once used by the Libyan Air Force, from Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti to Oakland County for the occasion. Then, to benefit Meadow Brook Hall, we auctioned off a ride in the jet. So I’ll be piloting Eastern Michigan University aviation student Phi…

so im 16 and lookin for a first car. ive seen several 03 9-3 linears in my area in my price range. my thinking is that A: good mpg B:sporty (?) C: practical and D: GM BABY!! i was basically down to my last resort cars because every other car i like insurance is through the roof. ( me-> <- insurance company) i was just about to settle for something mundane when my eyes fall upon a freshly washed black 9-3. i do some research and its lookin all too good but i was wonderin your thoughts.

Meet Saab's '07 9-3 While the 9-3's exterior carries over largely unchanged, it's interior recieves a moderate facelift for the '07 model year. The initial interior image posted last month was met with almost universal disapproval here on C&G. Luckily, further examination of the below images reveals a much-less "GMified" interior than earlier photos suggested. The lower-dash no-longer resembles a Casio and that black-tie radio certainly isn't the one out of your Cobalt. Have a look for yourself (56k Warning). -------------------- Aero http://isaab.net/img/9-3/2007/001.jpg http://isaab.net/img/9-3/2007/002.jpg Vector http://isaab.net/img/9-3/2007/003.jpg …

What a difference the Aero-X paint and wheels make... and what a fabulous looking car. Like the G8, it's a shame how GM loses a breakthrough car shortly after its debut... http://jalopnik.com/5346842/2010-saab-9+5-...bos-all-swedish Edit: Apparently this is the Aero model, which also gets different front and rear fascias.

Linkity Saab 9-5 Upclose Heavily Camouflaged Mule Spotted The Saab 9-5 is long overdue for an overhaul, with the current model first hitting the streets as far back as 1997. A totally redesigned model was rumoured to make an appearance last year but its release was pushed back due to limited resources at Saab and the introduction of the facelifted 9-3. Saab's parent company General Motors has since confirmed that the car will now make its debut later this year along with the new 9-3X crossover. Underneath the heavy camouflage of this prototype for the new 9-5 is a heavily revised version of GM's FWD Epsilon II platform, which is also shared by Opel fo…

i had seen some pics and thought the new redesigned 2006 looked better and caught my eye more then the older 9-5. now i am not gonna lie, i am not a saab loyalist...i have never owned one and just as recently as the new 9-3 even became interested. maybe this is why Saab did what they did,--to bring in more then just the loyalists. anyway, on to the drive. upon approach the car is very low to the ground. the front end is very long and "beak-ish" if you will. the wheels look good but imo, need to be 18's. i beleive the 9-3 has 18s and the 9-5 is a bigger car and has a lot of gap to fill. the Pirreli tires are nice, but replacemet will be expensive. the grill…

New 9-5 Makes U.S. Debut At New England Auto Show

Boston, MA – The new 9-5, Saab’s flagship car, will be unveiled for the first time to the North American press and public on Friday, November 4 at the New England International Auto Show in the Boston Bayside Expo Center. “This is a very fitting venue for the debut of the new 9-5 in North America,” said Jay Spenchian, Saab USA general manager. “Saab launched its American automotive activities almost 50 years ago in New England, and it is still a core area for our business. Over 400,000 Saab 9-5s have been sold so far worldwide, many in the Boston area. The debut of the new 9-5 here is a tribute to its loyal following in this area.” Simultaneously, Saab USA released pric…

I think it looks great, and not just for its age. It's funny how good designs grow on you. I initially thought the updates were pointless and backwords, but then I started to understand it from the designers' point of view, their intention and concept, and all of a sudden there's this epitome, "OH, so that's why they did it" moment. The question is whether or not the public will appreciate it. The styling might age better than an instant "OMFG thAts HOTTZZ!" design, but the car itself might die from poor sales.

not sure how real this is, but it does look a fair amount like the Aero X concept, which is supposed to be the inspiration for the next 9-5. I think this is pretty hot, so go for it Saab.

Not the greatest image, but you can definitely make out some Saab characteristics in this new CUV. To be based on Epsilon 2 / Theta platform with a 250hp 2.8V6 and turbo charged 300hp version as well. To be made in Mexico and introduced in Spring 2008 as a MY2009 model. This model will spell the end of the 9-7X. Here is the image blown up, gets very pixilated though..

By JASON STEIN | AUTOMOTIVE NEWS GENEVA -- Saab and Opel are developing hybrid systems that will appear on a range of mainstream vehicles before 2010. Hans Demant, Opel's managing director, did not say which vehicle is best suited for Opel's first hybrid -- but a car with a gasoline-electric powertrain is not far off. "Before the end of the decade, you will see a hybrid application in an Opel," said Demant, during an interview at the Geneva auto show. Saab Managing Director Jan-Ake Jonsson said a hybrid will likely appear on the next generation of its 9-3 and 9-5 vehicles. "We are part of the development process," Jonsson said. "Eventually hybrids will be in Saab ve…

Well, I bought a new 2006 SAAB 9-5 from my employer about half a year ago and I had it detailed in the shop today. I got out there to get my car and the paint was totally stripped from my hood logo! Now, I know all the workers back there and they would not do that on purpose so it was probably a defective logo. As I looked at some more SAAB's in the shop (the ones which are a year or 2 old), I noticed the same thing happening to all the logos. Yet, when I see the SAAB-Scania logos, they are as blue as can be. Has GM made these logos cheaper? To me if the logo paint peels off, then that's pretty bad advertisement (especially on a 6 month old car). By the way, other than th…
