William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com August 12, 2012 General Motors CEO Dan Akerson is not happy with the media this past week. During the company’s Thursday employee meeting, Akerson criticized leaks to news media. "We have to stop leaking in this company. It's an act of treason — it really is," Akerson said. Akerson used the Ewanick departure as an example. As we reported last week, Ewanick was thrown out of GM due to internal frictions and failure to disclose the full $559 million cost of a soccer deal. This information was gotten by Bloomberg News after a source told them about what had happen. It was almost verbatim what happened. That is unfair to a…

"Rumor has it that GM is expected to make some radical changes to its full-size pickups in the form of aluminum-intensive construction in a bid to shed weight and improve fuel efficiency, following the F-150's move a few years ago. The company is said to be working on making stronger aluminum and learning from Ford's switch to aluminum. "The new Silverado will continue with refinements to the current V-8 engines, but it's also expected to get a diesel and mild hybrid option on the half-ton models. Currently the Duramax diesel comes only on heavy-duty trucks — and a turbocharged V-6 is also likely to join the lineup. A 10-speed automatic first seen in the Chevrolet Ca…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com September 23, 2013 General Motors is considering whether or not to do off-road-focused versions of their next-generation full-size SUVs. "We are looking at, for this generation, a more off-road variant," said Jeff Luke, GM's executive chief engineer for trucks. Luke explains that off-road capability is a major reason why buyers go to full-size SUVs and not crossovers. Owners "just love off-roading with these vehicles. They look at this vehicle as more off-road capable" than crossovers, said Luke. GM sold a Z71 off-road package for their current-generation of full-size SUVs. The package added stronger shocks, larger wh…

The tentative agreement between General Motors and Canadian union Unifor has a $400 million investment going to Oshawa for a new product. Unifor President Jerry Dias said at a press briefing yesterday morning that Oshawa would be the only GM plant that will build cars and trucks. Neither side is saying what that product might be. But Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail has learned from sources that Oshawa will be handling the final assembly of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. Truck bodies from GM's Fort Wayne Assembly in Indiana will travel to Oshawa to have interiors installed and final assembly. The Detroit News reports something similar, although their so…

By Bernie Woodall DETROIT (Reuters) - The last time General Motors had a plain-talking Texan on its board of directors who was critical of the way the automaker did business, GM sent Ross Perot packing. Perot of Dallas said he hopes that Ed Whitacre of San Antonio won't run into the institutional stonewalling the billionaire investor faced in the mid-1980s when, as a member of GM's board, he challenged then-CEO and chairman Roger B. Smith. "I disagreed with what they were doing," Perot told Reuters in a telephone interview on Wednesday. "Then suddenly, they just didn't want anybody around to point out what we needed to do. They decided to get rid of the nuisance." Whi…

New GM Crossovers On An Odyssey of Their Own By Scott Anderson Dec 28, 2006 1:08 PM Link to Original Article @ WardsAuto PALO ALTO, CA – It’s just not cool to make minivans anymore. It’s debatable if minivans ever were cool – just ask any 30-something who grew up sandwiched between a cooler of Capri Sun and mesh bag of soccer balls. But minivans are even less cool if you’re an auto maker on the wrong end of the segment, as General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. demonstrated this year. Both domestic auto makers have shut down their minivan programs, leaving the sliding-doors wide open for the leaders: The Honda Odyssey and Chrysler Group’s Dodge Caravan. By no…

GM ramps up recycling More than 80 plants to be landfill-free after 2010 Robert Snell | Link to Original Article @ The Detroit News WARREN -- General Motors Corp. plans to recycle or reuse all production waste and garbage at half of its factories around the world by the end of 2010, a move that could pour millions of dollars into the automaker's coffers from sales of scrap metal and recycled materials. The commitment to having more than 80 of its factories become landfill-free generates money for financially-strapped GM and dovetails with its commitment to environmentally friendly policies, company officials said during an announcement Friday at the company's tr…

If you are interested in seeing one of the greatest propaganda efforts of all time, purchase tomorrow's Wall Street Journal. Mr. Steve Harris (The Rushing Rabbit), recently recalled director of PR at GM, has taken it into overdrive. First, he arranged for "Red Ink Rick" to be interviewed by anyone willing to "Paint the Roses Red". Now, rushing additional "Mad Chatter", the WSJ is the medium of choice. There you will find an advertised letter of support from the National Dealer Council glowing with accolades in support of Mr Wagoner, whom the New York Post called "the worst CEO since Chainsaw Al Dunlap". Without question, they are very concerned, even extremely worried…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com August 8, 2012 Last week, we reported on the departure of GM's global marketing chief, Joel Ewanick. The reason given out at the time was Ewanick not meeting up to expectations. A day after his departure, a report from Bloomberg said Ewanick's departure was due to a review of a recent sponsorship agreement that didn't meet company policy. A week later, a new report from Bloomberg sheds some more light on why Ewanick was kicked out. The recent sponsorship agreement in question was a partnership between Chevrolet and U.K. soccer team Manchester United. The agreement, lasting till 2021, would have GM shelling out $18.6 mil…

It hasn't been a good couple of years for workers General Motors' Orion Assembly, home to the Buick Verano and Chevrolet Sonic. Last year, GM laid off 150 workers. This was followed by GM eliminating a shift at the plant this year due to weak demand for small cars. Yesterday, another dose of bad news hit the plant. Both Automotive News and Detroit Free Press report a $245 investment announced last year for the plant has been shifted to GM's Fairfax, Kansas - home to the Chevrolet Malibu and Buick LaCrosse production. A GM spokeswoman tells Automotive News that workers were told about the investment shift back in January. The switch is “part of our ongoing prod…

GM has recalled its all-new crossovers, the GMC Acadia and Saturn Outlook, because of potentially faulty airbag sensors. The recall affects all 13,032 of the vehicles on the road. The problem stems from a faulty sensor that controls the front airbags’ deployment. It will also prevent the vehicle from alerting owners of a malfunction. GM says the problem is a software issue and can be remedied with a service — no parts need to be replaced — at the dealer at no cost to owners. The company discovered the problem during internal testing and no incidents have been reported. Letters went out Thursday to Outlook owners, and letters for Acadia owners will go out Feb. 28. Owne…

Harry Stoffer Automotive News September 23, 2008 - 6:35 pm ET WASHINGTON -- General Motors' hopes for a $7,500 federal tax credit to help it sell plug-in hybrid Chevrolet Volts may soon be realized. The Senate this evening passed a complex and wide-ranging tax bill, covering everything from extension of credits for wind energy producers to expanded exemptions from the alternative minimum tax. Riding along is a small provision creating a new tax credit for buyers of plug-in electric vehicles – none of which is on the market yet. The credit would start at $2,500 and rise to as much as $7,500 for a light-duty vehicle, depending on battery capacity. A buyer of …

GM to boost output due to clunkers incentives By TOM KRISHER, AP Auto Writer Tom Krisher, Ap Auto Writer – 42 mins ago DETROIT – Higher sales from the government's Cash for Clunkers program have prompted General Motors Co. to boost production at several of its factories, according to company and union officials. Last month, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) sent General Motors a 27 page document with 107 questions that dealt with the massive ignition switch recall that affects 2.8 million vehicles worldwide and is linked to 13 deaths. NHTSA gave the company a deadline of April 3rd to finish answering all of the questions. Well its a week after the deadline, NHTSA has announced it will fine GM $7,000 per day starting on April 3rd because the company hasn't answered all of the questions and being slow to respond. At this current time, the total fine stands at $28,000. In a letter released last night, NHTSA said General Motors hasn't answered a third of its…

"Our sources tell us that with this new Silverado, GM is accelerating its efforts to create an aluminum-intensive body to match the Ford F-series trucks. The next-gen truck — reportedly being developed with the internal code name T1XC — is expected to reach the market in late 2018 as a 2019 model. Our sources also told us that GM has made great efforts to refine its production processes with these lightweight materials, and promises a lighter, stronger and more efficient truck than its competitors. http://www.autoweek.com/apps/pbcs.dll/arti...p;rssfeed=rss01 By JAMIE LAREAU, AUTOMOTIVE NEWS "General Motors may build a Buick luxury car that is sized and priced below the LaCrosse. Executives are rethinking GM's U.S. product plans in light of new federal regulations requiring an average fuel economy of 35 mpg by 2020, company insiders say. The small Buick could be one outcome. The vehicle would be based on the Buick Excelle sedan that debuts in China by early next year. "I definitely think there might be a market for a luxury-crafted smaller car for Buick," says a senior GM source. GM would have to resolve where in North America to build the car. Also, exec…

General Motors has brought back a concept idea from their past for the modern era. This is SURUS (Silent Utility Rover Universal Superstructure) which takes the hydrogen skateboard platform from the GM Autonomy and Hy-Wire concepts from the early 2000s and supersizes it. The platform uses GM’s new Hydrotec fuel cell system that is comprised of a gen 2 fuel cell, storage tank that can provide a range of 400 miles, electric drive units, and a lithium-ion battery. This is placed onto a commercial truck chassis that will allow it handle various tasks and terrains such as military transport or a mobile medical unit in an area after a natural disaster. Back in July, we reported that CEO Dan Akerson created a group to study Tesla and how it could effect GM. Now it seems GM wants to take Tesla on. According to the Reuters and the Wall Street Journal, General Motors is working on a electric vehicle with a 200 Mile range and a pricetag of $30,000. This information came from GM's vice president of global product programs, Doug Parks. Jamie LaReau Automotive News July 28, 2008 - 12:01 am ET DETROIT — General Motors is allowing U.S. employees the opportunity, through July, to offer an employee discount to any one person they choose. The program is not as broad as GM's 2005 Employee Discount for Everyone event. It's an effort to boost sales, talk up GM products and clear inventory, a company spokesman said Friday. An employee discount provides substantial savings. For example, a Buick Lucerne with a sticker price of $34,200 would have an employee price of $29,758.03 after cash incentives, said a GM spokesman. http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/content/1...27324/index.php I enjoy reading this series because there's occasionally some insight to the bigger picture. Farago is rooting for GM despite the constant gloom. He's just as frustrated by the nasty combination of historic short-sighted and ill-visioned GM execs, legacy union issues, and increased competition as many of us are. The prospect of Tower and Delphi not coming to a good-for-all-parties agreement with the UAW is troubling. Seems the UAW will run GM into the ground and there's nothing that either GM or the UAW leadership can do to stop it. People are just too fat at this point.

From www.thetruthaboutcars.com by Robert Farago Ron Tadross. Say it softly and it’s almost like crying. If you’re GM that is. The Banc of America Securities analyst isn’t exactly what you’d call bullish on GM. Unlike his evil twin, analyst John Murphy, Tadross sees GM heading for a cash burn flame-out. "We believe GM management is glossing over the current and future cost of rightsizing the business," Tadross declared. More to the point, he recommended that investors sell their GM stock, with a target that’s literally half of its current price. In other words, when Merrill Lynch talks, nobody should listen. Although the media persists in calling GM plant closures an…

Delphi delays motion to void union contracts Friday 17 February 2006, 10:46am EST By David Bailey CHICAGO, Feb 17 (Reuters) - Bankrupt auto parts supplier Delphi Corp. on Friday said it would delay to the end of March filing court papers to void its labor contracts and to cut retiree benefits, citing progress in talks with unions and its former parent General Motors Corp. A filing, which could have come as early as Friday, would not immediately have led to a strike at Delphi, which in turn would quickly cripple U.S. automaker GM. However, it was seen as likely heightening tensions in the complex negotiations among the three groups. Delphi filed the biggest bankrupt…

GM said Wednesday it will give the Houston-based Hines real estate firm six acres just east of the automaker's world headquarters in the Renaissance Center in exchange for a cut of the future profits from the development. If the plan comes together as envisioned, the develope…

www.BillCara.com July 17, 2006 GM: like flies to manure I am unimpressed with anything I read about the state of affairs at General Motors. I sold it a year ago at $35, and about six months later the stock hit a low close of $18.33. I call GM a pure speculation - the antithesis of quality companies (like the Cara 100) where most people should be focused on trading shares. Today in Japan there is published speculation as to whether Auto giant Toyota Motor (a Cara 100 component) will let third-stringer Nissan Motor go into a tripartite alliance with Renault and GM. Some of you may see this as a defensive move by Toyota. I see it more as a case of flies being a…

With sales of new vehicles slowing down, automakers find themselves making tough decisions in terms of production and jobs. Later this week, General Motors will temporally shut down their Delta Twp, MI plant (home to Buick Enclave and Chevrolet Traverse) for a month to retool to make way for the next-generation models. When production begins back up on June 12th, there could be more than 600 workers without a job due to the third shift being cut. The Lansing State Journal reports that back in March, close to 1,100 workers were possibly going to be laid off. Workers were notified about this via a WARN notice (an advisory that is required to be sent out to workers unde…

Just caught Wind Tunnel tonight. Robin Millers [indianapolis Star] was on with his scoop that the word going around the pit areas in IRL and NASCAR have Roger possibly going to lead GM. Miller said he is following up on this and will report more later. He said he needed to shake out more info on it this week from team members in both series. I know this one comes up every few months and there is most likley nothing here as usaual, but it is the first time I have heard that race teams are passing the word around on this topic. Hmmm can you imagine a GM leader racing Dodge's, Porsche and Honda. GM could give him some token C6R's as a signing bonus.

Not sure if this is the proper forum for this question, but where are the various GM locations in the US? More specifically do they have an office or something in Traverse City, MI? On the recently added Camaro production announcement topic from the homepage, there was a GM newsletter with information on it's release and I noticed that it said Traverse City, MI near the beginning of the main article. My wife's family, and her and I, have all considered moving out near that area, but were concerned over what work would be available. Of all the years we've traveled to Traverse(from Chicago), none of us knew there was anything GM related in the area. Can anyone confirm?…

General Motors has announced new investments for two of their plants today. The Spring Hill manufacturing complex in Tennesse will see the largest of these two investments. A total of $788.7 million will go towards a new high-efficiency engine program and modernizing vehicle production. The investment will bring forth 792 new jobs and retaining 16. The Detroit News reports that GM is keeping quiet on what on the new engine program. “This investment will help GM and our workforce continue to put the customer at the center of everything we do, providing them with powertrain solutions to meet their changing needs. Today’s announcement reinforces our absolute faith in…

GM slashes Jobs and closes plants by end of 2006 We'll I for one was calling for Wagoner to step down, This just might be what saves his ass! Unlike the multiple years, 21 plants closed and 74K layed off starting in 1991. This one year big change could really improve things fast for GM. Be interesting as to how they handle the UAW. The UAW plans to fight this it sounds like. Sound off, do you think this is a good move or bad move for GM? Do you think they need to go deeper? Sounds like the SSR will be dead with the closing of the Michigan Craft Center. What are your thoughts? :CG_all:

Well, I remember reading throught pontiac's history according to, of course, pontiac.com and I remember reading that in like 1937 or so... pontiac used a new slogan "Built to Last 100,000 Miles" and "The most beautiful things on wheels" and also in 1932 Pontiac, although it was a fairly new brand sales rose 50% with usage of advertising campaigns targeting women... the 60's were the best years for GM... GM had vehicles that women wanted, and guys could impress a woman with. excuse my quote but like 2pac said "N**ga's want what the B**ches want" so market things for women... make a car that a girl would like to get p…

LaNeve: GM's Sales Slide has "Bottomed Out" General Motors Corp. U.S. sales decline has “bottomed out,” marketing chief Mark LaNeve told reporters in New York on Wednesday, and the company hopes to end a four-year slide in U.S. market share next year. “If we grow a tenth of a point next year, I’ll be thrilled out of my mind,” LaNeve said, according to a report from Bloomberg News. GM is counting on new SUVs and redesigned cars, pickups and SUVs to stop the fall, LaNeve said. CEO Rick Wagoner is to brief reporters and industry consultants on GM’s restructuring and plans for new models later today at a meeting in Detroit. Detroit Free Press

Keith Crain, editor at Automotive News calls a ball is a ball, and a strike is a strike. He has it figured out..........how come the guys running GM don't ????? Listen what he has to say GM. "It's a good thing that General Motors has North America and China to rely on for sales, products and profits. But what's going on in Europe? No one understood why GM got involved with PSA Peugeot Citroen by acquiring 7 percent of the company in March. Now, only a few months into the deal, it looks like GM executives made a big blunder. The weak European car market has made the value of the Peugeot stock worth less than the valuation carried on GM's balance sheet. I h…

You made the right choice when you put your confidence in General Motors, and we appreciate your past support. I want to assure you that we are making our best vehicles ever, and we have exciting plans for the future. But we need your help now. Simply put, we need you to join us to let Congress know that a bridge loan to help U.S. automakers also helps strengthen the U.S. economy and preserve millions of American jobs. Despite what you may be hearing, we are not asking Congress for a bailout but rather a loan that will be repaid. The U.S. economy is at a crossroads due to the worldwide credit crisis, and all Americans are feeling the effects of the worst economic down…

Things are moving along quite nicely with the development of the Chevy Volt. According to Bob Lutz, test mules of the extended-range electric vehicle are now being built atop the soon-to-be-released Chevy Cruze. This is a logical progression since the production Volt will share its Delta underpinnings with the new compact from General Motors when it finally goes on sale in 2010. Prior to these latest mules, the test cars used last-gen Malibu shells that Lutz and the team affectionately referred to as "MaliVolts." Predictably, Mr. Lutz praises the new Delta platform, and we have every reason to believe that it will be leaps and bounds better than its Cobalt forebear, just …

General Motors is under investigation by China's National Development and Reform Commission over possible antitrust violations. News of this first broke in an interview with Zhang Handong, director of the National Development and Reform Commission's price supervision bureau done by Chinese Newspaper China Daily. Handong said an American automaker would be penalized for monopolistic behavior. He did not mention said automaker. Bloomberg was able to learn from sources that the automaker in question is General Motors. The accusation is that GM told distributors in China to fix prices in an effort to improve sales. It should be noted that many of the penaltie…

Time for a bit of an inception moment. Today, General Motors is recalling one of their recalls that was issued on Monday. The company explained that the one pertaining to the 2014 CTS doesn't cover all of the CTSes. Wait, we just made that somewhat confusing. The 2014 CTS Coupe and Wagon, which are based on the second-generation model are effected by this recall. The 2014 CTS sedan, which is brand new isn't a part of this. Why GM didn't make this clarification when they announced the recall is unknown. Our best guess is that GM was in rush when getting these recalls out and forgot to note that. This past year has seen General Motors not be shy with scaling back operations in various international markets. The company sold off Opel/Vauxhall to PSA Group, ended sales of Chevrolet vehicles in India, and closed down their operations in South Africa. Now, GM's Korea operations are on the chopping block. Last week, GM CEO Mary Barra revealed that company officials were in discussion with minority owners and union officials that could lead to "some rationalization actions or restructuring." "We're going to have to take actions going forward to have a viable business," said Barra during a conference call talking about GM's 2017 financial results. Sales of…

By William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com March 20, 2013 Edmunds has learned from industry sources that General Motors is considering a three-cylinder engine for the Cadillac ELR and Chevrolet Volt. The reason for the three-cylinder is to help reduce fuel consumption and vehicle weight, something CEO Dan Akerson mentioned during a speech at a Houston energy conference a couple weeks ago. The proposed idea would have the 1.4L four-cylinder that is used in the Volt and ELR to be replaced by either a 1.0 or 1.2L three-cylinder engine that is currently being developed by GM and its partners in China. If given the green light, the engine would appear in the Volt r…

The explosion caused damaged to the at least part of the global battery lab inside the Alternative Energy Center and injured five people. Jamie LaReau Automotive News August 25, 2008 - 12:01 am ET DETROIT — General Motors' product lineup will be dramatically different next decade. "It's clear that the size of the American vehicle is going to shift radically, for all kinds of reasons — fuel economy; legislation; the gasoline price, which may or may not come down and may go up over time," Bob Lutz, GM's vice chairman of product development, told Automotive News. "So the U.S. fleet is going to be downsized, and I think the U.S. consumer is no longer going to associate size with luxury and price." GM's small cars will be developed on two global platforms: the Gamma and the slightly larger Delta c…

Toyota's Gain a Plus for U.S. Automaking: Doron Levin (Update1) By Doron Levin April 26 (Bloomberg) -- The report that Toyota Motor Corp., Japan's biggest automaker, surpassed No. 1 General Motors Corp. in worldwide sales during the first quarter shouldn't be viewed as evidence of U.S. industrial decline. U.S. automaking arguably has never been stronger. That's not to say General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and DaimlerChrysler AG's Chrysler Corp. aren't struggling and won't soon, if ever, dominate the industry as they once did. For long-term owners of the common stocks and bonds of the U.S.-based automakers, not to mention for their workers and for the communities in…

I obviously like news like this. Some analysts feel it will bode well for GM. They also say that it will be the dealers that will "take it on the chin." I immediately went to a couple of GM web sites to see how certain cars were priced and then to GM card to see if the allowances changed (downward). I did see, however, that some incentives have been lowered. Well, but that was expected. Do you think that the mark-ups will proportionately be the same? Do you think this will mess with the dealers? DO YOU THINK GM WILL SELL MORE CARS OR THAT THE OTHERS WILL FOLLOW SUIT?

DETROIT - In the document that spells out the tentative pact between General Motors Corp. and the United Auto Workers, their futures are listed as: "demand and business case dependent," "no future product allocation," or even possible sale or closure. Fifteen factories in places such as Wentzville, Missouri; Wilmington, Delaware; and Flint, Michigan, have been left on shaky ground by the pact that the UAW hailed as having won unprecedented job security from GM. Most of the 15 factories, which together employ more than 40,000 hourly workers, will see their current work go out of production in 2011, when the four-year contract would expire, with the next generation of the…

Report says China’s military likely to add to Beijing-Washington strains WASHINGTON - The Pentagon is warning China in blunt language that despite Beijing’s massive military buildup, it lacks the power for a successful attack against rival Taiwan. The annual report on China’s military, released Friday, is likely to add to rising tension between Washington and Beijing at a time when U.S. lawmakers are considering bills that would punish China for what they contend are predatory trade practices. The report was released on the day the largest high-level Chinese delegation ever to visit the United States left Washington after economic meetings with frustrated lawmakers and…

THE Chevrolet Volt is expected to be the icing on General Motors’ 100th birthday cake this week. The much-promoted sedan, which will operate as an electric car in typical local driving, is intended to provide a jump-start for the company’s second century. The timing of the Tuesday event is fortuitous, for much more is riding on the Volt than whether a new model using experimental technologies will be a hit. For if the Volt succeeds, it could put the troubled company on a whole new path after 10 decades tethered to the internal-combustion engine. If it fails, it could drag G.M., and perhaps the entire struggling American auto industry, even further behind Asian competito…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com February 16, 2012 Today, General Motors announced their results for 2011 and forth quarter. The company announced a profit of $7.6 billion for 2011, a large increase from the $4.7 billion profit in 2010. However, forth quarter results were not as impressive. Net income for the forth quarter was only $472 million, or about the same as Q4 2010. While this makes it eight straight quarters of positive growth, the earnings were weighed down by losses of $562 million in Europe. There were also a number of one-time events that affected earnings in the fourth quarter. Take those events out and GM says the profit would have …
