My Jack-O-Lantern for 2008. I carved it last week, that way it should survive until Halloween. I even made a special tool by grinding down a baby-screw driver and filing it down into a saw. This year I gave Sofia an orange Sharpie marker and had her sketch out her own design on a pumpkin, after which I carved it with her pointing out the lines and giving me "artistic direction" the whole time. Kids are so much fun. Some days she makes me want to pull my hair out but overall she's a great little girl. Also, we went apple picking two weeks ago, including a hayride, petting zoo and all that fun stuff.

Why do companies waste money advetising things that sell very poorly. I see boatloads of commercials for the Ford Flex which sells less than 2000 per month. Mercury and Mitsibishi run endless amounts of commercials and don't sell hardly any vehicles. This wasted money should go towards makng more desirable vehicles.

Alrighty. Two-three years ago, it was about Chrysler's huge success with the 300 and the entire buzz of 'polarizing design'. It became all about, 'if you want to have a hit in the car market, you can't just have vanilla designs. Good designs will often offend many people, but if your design is polarizing it means you can achieve a greater passion level for your products....'gotta have it' factor (copyrite, C/D). Now, as we look back and see the disaster that is called Chrysler, its safe to say they bet the farm on polarizing design too much, and it may be their demise. Most folks won't consider an LX car, it's a 'pimpmobile' or 'gangsta car'. At best, its for a gr…

I seriously could not stop laughing from some of the reader comments afterwards...... You have to get that Minnesotans pick fun about how WI residents are among if not the most intoxicated in our nation, and so many of these stories come up. http://www.startribune.com/local/33210424.html again, the comments are HILARIOUS

Hey boys and girls: I just got banned from my first forum. I feel like I just got voted Prom King! I've been hanging around Urbantoronto.ca for a few months. Boy, are they a bunch of tree huggers! You guys would HATE it there. First of all, most of the site is based around pictures of big holes in the ground, which is what Toronto is becoming these days, but almost from the beginning I endured personal attacks (and was even called a piece of $h! for being gay), all the while the mods did nothing. I tried to take the high road and did get sympathetic PMs from a couple posters, but although I read most of the threads (as I do on C&G), I fo…

The other day I was offered a free car. It's an '84 Camaro, all that I know about it is that it was a V6 car that is now "set-up" for a V8 and that it is in "decent" shape. I'm pretty lukewarm to the idea because it is a V6 car which limits my legal options about what I can do with it. I may investigate a bit more, but I'm not sure I want to bother with such a car. Thoughts?

Boomers: 3 ways the crisis whacks your retirement 10/17/2008 12:01 AM ET Link to MSN Money For the generation of Americans born between 1946 and 1964, the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression comes at the worst time imaginable. Baby boomers are nervously trying to navigate their nest eggs to a safe port in a stormy sea of wild stock market swings, falling home values and a weakening job market. It can take years for nest eggs to recover from heavy investment losses. But time is something baby boomers -- the oldest of whom turned 62 this year -- just don't have enough of. Here are the problems near-retirees now face and what (if anything) baby boomer…

Study says most corporations pay no U.S. income taxes Cry me a freakin river when you say that business taxes are too high. The GOP is traditionally claimed that taxes are too high on corporations, that to generate jobs taxes on corporations should be lowered. McCain bleats this regularly. The GAO says that most corporations do not pay any income taxes. What is lower than zero? Money Quotes:

ish, that Opel influence is something. Test drove a Vue tonight. So now, in addition to my mancrush on the Astra XR, I have a similar mancrush on the Vue XR. The 4 cyl XE even too. Solid as a rock. The XR has mucho cajones under the hood. XE shocked me, i had to look at the Monroney to make sure it was only a 4 cyl. Corners on rails, for a crossover. HOW DO THEY SELL RAV4's? There is no comparison. The new Forester is junk by comparison. (yes, i've driven both of those). Yup, I'm a Saturn fan now. Sorry folks. Still like the other GM stuff, but Opel's done it homework here. Now if they could just get the word out! (and the prices down)

If you go to Wikipedia and search on "Star Trek (movie)" and scroll down, you'll see a picture of the new Enterprise bridge with Kirk (Chris Pine.....oooooo so f@#king hot) and McCoy...... I have to say.....the new bridge is SO cool, it's incredible....! Somehow, they were able to design a bridge that looks futuristic compared to today's times.....yet captures the "cheesy" spirit of the original (and I say "cheesy" in a good way.) Think "Enterprise" meets "Apple's IPod" and you'll get an idea of what it looks like. AND, Pine's "slouch" in the captain's chair seems PURE William Shatner..... You straight boys can let us all know what you think of the Yeoman's skirt…

Great weather for the show today - cool, crisp, and sunny. Took the '38 Dodge for what will likely be its last outing of 2008. Over 600 cars this year, the oldest of which was a 1904 Cadillac (no pic). I only took a few pics due to lots of looking around and BSing. And Imageshack seems to be on the rag tonight, so some are missing. (I'll try to add them) Enjoy:

I've learned I love junkyards. About 2 weeks ago, the theater dimming on the dash on the '92 Regal went on the fritz. I walked into Borders one evening, had coffee for an hour, and came back to see that the dash lights were STILL ON. I had to pull the panel fuse every time I left the car at night. I contacted a couple of Buick parts departments and they told me the dimming feature and the "lights-stay-on for 30 seconds after shutting door" was in the expensive light switch...a light switch costing over $ 300!!! I had to go to Portland over Columbus Day, so I found several old Regals at several pick-n-pulls. Swtiches were generically priced at under $ 10. I just inst…

In starting to plan the September 2009 Route 66 tour (formal announcement coming soon), I realize that Route 66 isn't the only old, nostalgic route available to travel. The Lincoln Highway is another one...which, unlike Route 66, spans across the entire United States, from coast to coast. Maybe someday I'll have time to do that route. In the meantime, while I'm familiar with some sections of the old Lincoln Highway (notably through Geneva IL, towards Elburn IL, and points farther west) due to historic marker signs along IL RT 38, US Route 66 is the one old highway that really interests/intrigues me. I've always been curious about Route 66 ... because I enjoy older ca…

I have a couple of meetings/classes/hobbies I go to in the evenings in my spare time after work. This lady runs one of them. She's pretty cool. However, she just called me to tell me about this chick she wants to invite to the next one and part of the thing is that she would like this chick to meet me. Un-f*cking-believable. It's too late. I'm sure this chick will come to the next meeting. This is MY time to unwind and I don't go to "mind expanding" events to meet people, other than on a platonic level. This changes the complexion of this event for me. Have you guys experienced this? This ridiculous need to matchmake. Not only that, what I have found every ti…

Okay, so like, I was really bored last night (and the BF was watching his Brazilian soaps on the big TV - yechhh. If you think American soaps are bad, try watching them on Globo - well, okay, the hotties are hotter on those shows, but anyway, I digress.) So, I am in the den, puttering around on the computer and switch to YouTube. After laughing my ass off at the Sarah Pollin skit on SNL, I hunt for old car commercials and take in a dozen or so old Chrysler commercials ("Your Next Car...,") etc, then I see all these videos posted of different folks showing off their old beasties. Ah, a cornacopia of old cars in action. When what to my horrified eyes should appe…

There is a '71 Eldorado for sale in the Wal-Mart parking lot, $5000. Its red with a tan top and red leather interior. The body is really straight, the interior is in great shape, only problem I see is the rear window on the passenger side is down and I dont know why. I want it and I could probably talk my way into being permitted to buy it, but I'd have to find someone to give me a loan for at least part of it and someplace to store it.

Here's the scene: It is 59 degrees outside and I decide to take Arkus with me to the local Wawa. I head down RT 252 toward my destination behind a host of fools that think pacing the car next to you constitiutes safe driving. After a frustrating, if mercifully short, drive I arrive at my destination. I always park right in front of the building so that Arkus can see me while I'm inside, which I proceed to do. I raise the passenger window to a crack of just over an inch so that Arkus can't push the window out of its track (again), and crack my window about half of an inch. So I go inside and order my breakfast sandwiches and prepare my coffee. when the sandwiches are…

Okay......thought I'd get the C&G's team's feedback on this interesting topic (well interesting to me at least.) I get $h! all the time from my friends because I'm 38 and I always end up dating guys in their mid-20's. I'm always asked....."Why don't you date guys your age or older?" So I've been thinking about it alot.....and I don't have an answer. It just seems that the guys I'm attracted to and end up falling emotionally for tend to be somewhere around 10-12 years younger than me. Before the "Daddy Complex" jokes start......LOL.....it's not that at all. I've always looked to my boyfriends, or guys I'm dating, as equals in our relationship.…

At a charity event yesterday, Both Obama and McCain gave comedic speeches intended to poke fun at each other and themselves. Interspersed in the speeches were moments of seriousness without the political rancor that poisons most of the things they have been saying lately. It was a breath of fresh air. Obama did a nice job and had some great lines. But McCain killed! He was so funny that not only was I laughing out loud, but so was Obama. Hillary Clinton damn near fell out of her chair - I have never seen her smile so much. The mostly Democratic crowd was roaring. And, in the moments of seriousness, McCain displayed the graciousness and humility that makes him one …

I don't know if anyone else does this, but I'm pretty observant when watching movies...especially when it comes to filming locations. Tonight I was watching Halloween I. The movie is supposed to take place in a fictional town called Haddonfield, Illinois. Yet two scenes are shot at different schools, both the open-air type you see in places like California where there is a mild climate. That would never fly in Illinois during the middle of the winter. Second, in the scene where the doctor is headed to Haddonfield, you can see these gigantic mountains in the background. News flash: Illinois doesn't have mountains! Same thing with Stephen King's "The Stand." There …

New technologies and changes in U.S. law are adding to pressures to turn Internet service providers into cops examining all Internet traffic for child pornography. One new tool, being marketed in the U.S. by an Australian company, offers to check every file passing through an Internet provider's network — every image, every movie, every document attached to an e-mail or found in a Web search — to see if it matches a list of illegal images. The company caught the attention of New York's attorney general, who has been pressing Internet companies to block child porn. He forwarded the proposal to one of those companies, AOL, for discussion by an industry task force that i…

Enough political BS Let's get light. Here's some advice i need. My 500 lease goes back in a week or so. To cover myself in the wake of a scarce credit scenario, I bought a used Taurus X a couple months ago. Now it seems like a good move. So, replacing my 500 is done, and I don't have to be forced into a bad deal now, when credit is tight and good deals are also few as well. The thing is now I am driving the 2004 Aztek. Wife has the new rig. The dilemma I face is its a nice daily driver. Quiet, spacious, 20 mpg, functional. Drives like a dump truck and its not fun per se, but its a good cruiser. Its in decent shape. Sometimes things seem clearer at 4:00am I've been talking in length with a friend from UPS during our breaks, about the err of our two party system. And then this A.M., at about 4:00am it HIT me. You wanna know the TRUE reason WHY there is a TWO PARTY SYSTEM in the USA? Divide and conquer. While most reasonable, self respecting Americans agree about the important issues, or at least …

Forbes Times are so difficult for the auto industry that even Toyota and Honda have now experienced the kinds of double-digit sales dips that have been plaguing American auto giants General Motors and Ford all year. Sales for the entire industry were down 26.6% collectively in September as consumers grew skittish about making big-ticket purchases. In good economic times and bad alike, however, there are some vehicles that American consumers seem to abhor outright. And they're not just the big, gas-guzzling SUVs that are currently out of favor. It turns out, the cars American consumers hate the most come in many different shapes and sizes, and they're disliked for a w…

Arizona Republican who picks a woman who just had a baby within the last 6 months and whose (national and) international political savvy is thoroughly questionable, and (2) a well-educated but almost completely inexperienced Illinois Democrat who delivers all this unsubstantiated rhetoric and sounds like a Bible church preacher if you're listening to him from the other room. Currently I bike about 10 miles everyday. I park my car, ride to school, school to work, work to car. It doesn't always work out like that, depends on what I have to do and when I have to do it. So, in order to get a more consistent workout, I'm going to start getting up earlier and jogging in the morning. Its getting too chilly to kayak, which sucks. I'm thinking about springing the $4/week to get into the company gym, haven't decided if I'd actually use it or not.

How's this for a dirty trick? I have my mortgage set to autopay. For years I've always paid the full amount for the 30 year mortgage. Well, apparently, I have a new optional minimum payment and Washington Mutual automatically switched me to that instead of my full payment amount. It's only $25 a month difference, but had I left it alone, I'd have a balloon payment treat at the end of my mortgage.

ACORN describes itself as a “non-partisan” group devoted to helping the poor and to registering millions to vote. The organization has at least 350,000 dues-paying member families, and more than 850 chapters spread among at least 104 U.S. cities. Selectively adding millions of Democratic names to the voter rolls remains one of ACORN’s most lucrative activities, for which this organization has been given millions of dollars by organized labor, non-profit foundations, and Democratic-controlled government agencies. “Instead of trying to overturn ‘the system — to blow it up, as Wiley (one of ACORN's original New Leftist founders) wanted to do, ACORN burrows deep within t…

Here I am, moaning about all the malaise that has spilled into our little "escape pod" on the 'net, and I've been adding to it myself. I really want to get away from all the negativity that has plagued The Lounge lately. It's bad enough to hear of the latest seemingly insurmountable challenge befalling our beloved GM and the rest of the domestic auto industry in the rest of C&G, but to me, this part of the forum should be a safe haven from "The World" and all its harsh realities.

Back at the beginning of Political threads around here, I said that I saw value in both major party candidates. That has been all but obscurred by all of the BS in this election - all of the substance has vanished. Now, I can't help thinking (as I have for years) that there isn't a dime's worth of difference between them. The arguments are all about accusations and counter-accusations while anything important has been utterly ignored. Sad and stupid.

Oliver Stone's "W." is coming out next Friday. ANyone have plans to go see it? I've only read a couple of reviews and they pretty much said it was ok and Stone even gave Bush a fair shake, it wasn't just a bash piece. I'll have to check it out to see.

Here are a set of cool pics from our last autocross. Audi is the car I was talking about in the other threads... Last picture of the Catherham-boy standing next to the car is my son Joel, I am standing behind the car and Scott, the cars owner is standing on the drivers side. The kid in the passenger seat of the Mustang is also Joel...we have renamed him Pooch the ride mooch! ...and everytime I see that Milano go through the corners, I think of Paulino (Italian member of C and G, Italian car, go figure) But check out the link if you want, my friend Eric took the pics. I'm starting to see some amazingly good deals out there. I haven't been in the stock market for a few years now. The last time I bought in was the bottom of the market crash just after 9-11. I took just a few hundred dollars and was able to turn it into a substantial down payment for my CTS. Highest on my list is CBRE At 70 cents a share, they seem like a great deal. They pay a dividend, they're small cap, and they have a tremendous upside once the real estate market returns.

I have a pretty interesting issue with my Ps2 (newer one) I've been playing MLB 2008, and after about a half an hour- the PS2 just turns off. Play it again for a while, and seems to be ok.... It has done this two nights in a row. Anybody seen this issue before?

From the first debate: Obama: Senator McCain mentioned Henry Kissinger, who's one of his advisers, who, along with five recent secretaries of state, just said that we should meet with Iran – guess what – without precondition. This is one of your own advisers. McCain rejected Obama's claim: McCain: By the way, my friend, Dr. Kissinger, who's been my friend for 35 years, would be interested to hear this conversation and Senator Obama's depiction of his -- of his positions on the issue. I've known him for 35 years.~~ ----------- ~~Kissinger Sept. 20: Well, I am in favor of negotiating with Iran. And one utility of negotiation is to put before Iran our vision of a M…

Favoring domestic drilling over alternative energy won't work because even if every last inch of public territory were open to drilling, it would add only .16 million barrels per day to the global oil supply and it wouldn't even come online till 2017 The world consumed 86 million barrels per day in 2007. In highly technical terms "drop in bucket". Money Quote:

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Trying to head off a potentially embarrassing state ethics report on GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, campaign officials released their own report Thursday that clears her of any wrongdoing. Sen. John McCain's running mate is the subject of a legislative investigation into whether she abused her power as governor by firing her public safety commissioner. The commissioner, Walter Monegan, says he was dismissed in July for resisting pressure from Palin's husband, Todd Palin, and numerous top aides to fire state trooper Mike Wooten, Palin's former brother-in-law. The move came hours after the state Supreme Court refused to halt the ethics in…

i think i recall you saying post 55 aint a packard but i saw this on ebay and thought it was interesting if anything. 1958 Packard Station Wagon eh i'd rather have a 60's wagon but it seemed cool just for the fact you dont see any. btw here are also some pics of our old 55 clipper constelation originally an automatic, my great aunt and uncle had trouble with it so they sent some uys from atlanta where they bought it out with a manual and swapped it out. never changed back. it had tinted windows, power windows, and the self leveling ride system. there are a few other neat things but i cant recall them at the moment.

Driving home from work today, I was passed by a late model Camry..painted medium metallic Subaru blue, with a big assed wing, STI stickers, a fart can exhaust, SUBARU decals on the windshield and sides, and a body kit. ...and yes it was a Camry, not the current WRX Amazing. One can only hope this was a movie stunt car for stand in duty for someone smart enough not to destroy a real WRX. Chris

Now Wall Street may shun $700bn bail-out Fears are mounting that many Wall Street banks and financial firms will refuse to participate in the US government's $700bn bail-out package, leaving global markets and world economies in a perilous state for months to come. 'There is a growing feeling that banks ... might instead decide to tough it out,' said Thomas Caldwell, chairman and CEO of Caldwell Financial, a $1bn-plus fund manager. For the past two weeks all eyes in the market have been focused on US Congress and its attempts to pass Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson's bail-out package - a bill to allow the US government to buy up to $700bn of toxic mortgage-related …

On October 1, the Pentagon, for the first time ever, dedicated an Army force specifically to NorthCom, which is in charge of securing not some foreign region but the United States of America. The Pentagon’s decision to dedicate the First Brigade Combat Team to NorthCom has raised alarms, especially in the context of the current economic crisis. In Bush’s National Security Presidential Directive 51, he lays out his authority in the event of a catastrophic emergency. In such an emergency, “the President shall lead the activities of the Federal Government for ensuring constitutional government” and will coordinate with state, local, and tribal governments, along with priva…

Ocn: Do you remember the Nomad at Carlisle with the pearl white paint at the GM nats show a while back? We were looking at the tint of that paint and it seemed to me that it had a slight blue tint to it. I'd like to find a stock white pearl that has that same look. Any ideas? Everyone: Please post any pics of cars in a factory white pearl, I'm trying to find one I really like. Thank to all in advance.

I have been doing some research into what GM was doing in Germany during the Nazi Years, I was surprised to say the least. I decided to post this article here in the lounge where only we members can view it and not the whole world. I was shocked on some of the things I learned. I try to have an open mind when it comes to issues involving GM, I like to see the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly, of the company I work for. James D. Mooney thrust his arm diagonally, watching its reflection in his hotel suite mirror. Not quite right. He tried once again. Still not right. Was it too stiff? Too slanted? Should his palm stretch perpendicular to the ceiling; should his arm bend at …

It's at $2.65 as I write this. Frankly, I tend to have a bit more faith in Ford than I do GM, so I was wondering if it can go much lower, and whether it'd be something to play around with.

Anyone going, from the Jersey or very east PA area, and if so, when? I have 2 packages I'm supposed to deliver, but I'm not feeling it in my bones to drive there & back by myself this year. Last year I slept over in my truck, but I'm not up for that again, either. Anyone willing to take a hitcher along? I don't care what day I go at this point; still waiting on a callback from package #1 guy.

A coworker was test driving a customer's '04 Mountaineer today after replacing the transmission, when a Caravan ran a stop sign and t-boned him HARD in the driver's side, popping the head curtains (which probably saved his life). It sent the big Mountaineer over on its right side, sliding down the street, until it caught something, flipped into the air and landed ON TOP OF a Chevy pickup. The Mercury is smashed to smithereens, every single panel. The doctors say he broke no bones, and he'll only be sore for a few days. The center post on his side is a couple of inches into the driver's seat... unbelievable. He is a lucky man to have been driving such a strong SUV.

Oh man, I had to race today for the first time in my Cobalt. Some kid in a tC was zipping through traffic with his fart can, passing ppl. It just so happened at the next light, I was next to him. When I stopped at the light, I hung back instead of stopping even with him. When the light turned green, I popped the clutch, squealed wheels, and caught second gear, leaving his wheezy little Toyota farting in the breeze. HA! That was fun.

Channel 74 on Dish Network is entirely devoted to one person and one person alone: Barrack Obama. And it's nothing but prepaid ad after ad after ad after ad endorsing his campaign, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, until the election is over (or until the end of his first term maybe?). Now I want to be perfectly clear that I am not for either candidate in the 2008 election and I have my reasons. (However, I am still voting, nothing will defer me from it.) But I do think that perhaps it is only just and fair that if you're going to let one political party and it's candidate for president have their own channel airing nothing but annoying, cliched propaganda in a never endi…

Lets try this again, but we'll start with my counter-point to the points that started the other (now locked) thread. I used 1400+ texts last month, compared to less than 6 hours of talk time. Texting is great for short questions that have short answers. I text several of my co-workers because they always have their cell phones, and their not always at their desks. My ex and I text in regards to our son and when he's going to be where and with whom. I hate phone calls where one person needs a small piece of information because they always end up dragging on longer than they should. My fiancee and I send each other random dirty/incredibly stupid texts throughout the …

Happy birthday to "I Hope GM Rules Again" and "Tbass." I've actually met "GM Rules" - Steve - while on vacation in Quebec and he has a cool car and is a very cool guy. He even got some previous Olds brochures for me that I had misplaced over the years -- they sit on my coffee table! So, I'll start the thread and hope you have a great birthday!

As of July 1, one can no longer speak on a hand-held phone while driving here. Hooray. Most of my near misses were with some moron who was yacking away on a cell phone and having to make some key maneuvers at the same time. Some still yack, taking the risk they won't get caught and ticketed. Now, it's the text messagers. First, what pleasure does someone get from text messaging? All these tiny keys that are too small for most people's fingers. Why not just leave a voice mail? I might see it if you're in a business meeting and need to send/receive something, but that's about it. For all others, leave an 'effin voice mail. Now, these text messagers are sitting the…

Gatherings and events seem to be picking up steam in terms of more and more possibilities the last few years with, in most cases of which I'm aware, increasing attendance. Heck, this weekend (October 3-5) alone, I knew of 3 gatherings... ...southern Mini Reunion for ValveReplacement in TN ...gathering of the "Florida chapter" of the Southern Monte Carlo Club in Tallahassee ...and a MidWest MC meet in St Louis. I had planned to attend the St Louis gathering, but I wasn't feeling well Friday...and ended up being sick Friday night and didn't do much at all today (Saturday). Next weekend, I have a gathering in Sandwich IL to attend. Then, October 18, is the Fall …

JERUSALEM - In Israel's ultra-Orthodox Jewish community, where the rule of law sometimes takes a back seat to the rule of God, zealots are on a campaign to stamp out behavior they consider unchaste. They hurl stones at women for such "sins" as wearing a red blouse and attack stores selling devices that can access the Internet. In recent weeks, self-styled "modesty patrols" have been accused of breaking into the apartment of a Jerusalem woman and beating her for allegedly consorting with men. They have torched a store that sells MP4 players, fearing devout Jews would use them to download pornography. "These breaches of purity and modesty endanger our community," said 3…
