William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com July 16, 2012 Back in March, we reported that Lexus LF-LC concept at this year's North American International Auto Show had a 50/50 chance of going into production. Now, it appears the chances for the LF-LC have gone up. Automotive News has learned from a few sources that the LF-LC will go into production due to the overwhelming reaction from people. "There has been a lot of interest from dealers and distributors," a Lexus official said. There is also another reason for Lexus to put the LF-LC into production. Lexus needs some pizzazz to their lineup and a halo car like the LF-LC would be the ticket. Sources inside Lex…

Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak told a crowd today of an unintentional acceleration problem with his 2010 Toyota Prius, which isn't under a recall. "This is software. It's not a bad accelerator pedal," he told the crowd. "It's very scary." When speaking to the Discovery Forum 2010 he spoke about the software issue with his new Prius: He's not the first one to bring up a potential software issue related to the acceleration problems, but his word carries extra weight because of his experience with software and computers. It's important to note cars like the Toyota Camry have a drive-by-wire throttle system and the gas pedal isn't actually connected mechanically to the en…

Hail to the chief, thanks to Toyota Sharon Terlep / The Detroit News Link to Original Article @ DetNews.com This speech by President Bush -- who is fond of telling the Big Three to suck it up and build relevant vehicles -- is brought to you by Toyota Motor Corp. No kidding, Bush's speech to the National Association of Manufacturers Thursday in Washington was sponsored by four major manufacturers, including Toyota. "Toyota is a good corporate citizen and they want the world to know it," explained Hank Cox, vice president of media relations at NAM. The four companies' logos were prominently displayed on a billboard outside the ballroom. At least Bush referred to NAM's …

The LS's Perfection Pursuit Slower Than Expected It's just a blurb, so I'll post the whole thing: The Lexus LS 460 fell short of its claimed 0-60 mph time of 5.4 seconds in a road test in the latest issue of Car and Driver magazine. The C&D testers couldn't get the car to complete the sprint in any less than 6.0 seconds. Braking distances were also unusually long. The car took 209 feet to come to a stop from 70 mph, the magazine said. That's nearly the same as the GMC Seirra's 210 foot braking distance. The new Mercedes S-Class, by comparison, takes 172 feet to stop from the same speed. Read "Lexus LS 460 performance numbers disappoint" @ Leftlane News

2007 Lexus GS450h Can hybrid technology make a great sedan even better? by Paul A. Eisenstein (2006-02-24) The Big Island of Hawaii is a land of surprises. Along the warm, dry Kona Coast it's sunshine, swimming, and golf. But just ten miles away, along the cross-island Saddle Road , a torrential rain is pummeling down, while a blizzard scours the island's twin volcanic peaks. So it was an unexpectedly appropriate place to go for our first drive of the 2007 Lexus GS450h, a sedan that delivers a variety of its own surprises. The new model could very well redefine both the Lexus brand and the concept of hybrid-electric vehicles. "Hybrid" is, of course, what the little …

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com May 9, 2012 Back in March, we reported on a comment said by Tetsuya Tada, the chief engineer of the Toyota GT86/Subaru BRZ/Scion FR-S. "The GT 86 was designed from the outset that we can build it as a convertible," said Tada. Well it seems Toyota has given the green light for an FR-S convertible. Car and Driver reports the convertible will keep its back seat, however trunk space will suffer due to the folding roof mechanism. Mechanicals will remain the same: a 200 HP flat-four engine and the choice between a six-speed manual and automatic transmissions. Expect the convertible to get some structural reinforcements. …

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com January 15, 2012 Riddle me this Batman; what future car is Toyota Division Group Vice President and General Manager, Bob Carter talking about. Will have “more room than a BMW X5, be faster than a (Volkswagen) TDI and have higher mpg than a Fiat 500.” The answer, well it could be one of two things; a new model Toyota is working on or the new Avalon. What? The Avalon? Yes, and here’s how. To have more room than a BMW X5, the vehicle would need an interior volume greater than 102.4-cubic feet. To beat a Volkswagen TDI, the vehicle would need to produce more than 140 HP and 235 lb-ft of torque. To best a Fiat 500 in mil…

The Toyota Tacoma has been the best-selling mid-size pickup in the U.S. for nearly 20 years. Holding such an important place in the lineup, Toyota has been very conservative with updates in the past. The outgoing generation ran for a full 7 years, but even that was based on a platform that dates all the way back to 2004. For 2024, the Tacoma sheds the old platform entirely and joins the Tundra and Sequoia on Toyota's new TNGA-F global truck platform. The 2024 Tacoma is the latest (and final) updated entry to the US mid-size truck market, joining the Ranger, Canyon, Colorado, Ridgeline, and Frontier, all of which have been recently redesigned. Tacoma is coming out …

Back in August, we reported that Toyota was possibly considering dropping in a diesel for its full-size Tundra pickup. "The diesel engine is something that is on our evaluation list. Hybrid technology is something that is on our evaluation list. Either one of those alternatives could deliver some pretty good real world fuel economy,"said Rick LoFaso, Toyota's corporate manager for light trucks. "I think Cummins would bring instant name recognition and obviously they are a leader in diesel engine technology. That is not the first time we would have a tie up with somebody else." Well it seems Toyota has possibly made a decision and is turning to Cummins for help. Wards A…

Ever heard of Toyota Industries? No, not thatToyota (NYSE: TM). Toyota Industries is the original Toyota, founded in 1926; it spun off the far more familiar automotive division in 1937. Though it trades on the Pink Sheets, Toyota Industries' relatively low valuation and lucrative partial interest in its more famous offspring could make it a Foolish opportunity. What began as a company to make looms for textiles now manufactures forklifts, cars, and auto parts. The Rav4 and Yaris are both manufactured by Toyota Industries, but bear the Toyota Motors logo. Confused yet? It gets better: Toyota Motors owns 23.5% of Toyota Industries, and Toyota Industries owns 5.55% of Toyot…

I've stated here that I believe GM and Ford followed the wrong horse when they dropped V6 engines from the option list on Malibu and Fusion. I've read that Toyota is more than doubling production capacity of their V6 from 146k to 362k units at their Alabama plant. Toyota continues to believe in the simplicity, power and smoothness of a naturally-aspirated V6 v. a force-fed turbocharged 4-cylinder. Indications are the next Accord will continue with a V6 option as well. Simplicity wins the reliability war over complication every single time. And real-world fuel mileage will likely continue to at least match a turbo 4, if mileage is a primary concern. It will be inte…

William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com October 3, 2012 Besides hybrid powertrains, Toyota's powertrain line has been lacking some key features that competitors are now offering. Those features include direct-injection, Continuously Variable Transmissions (CVT), and turbochargers to balance performance and fuel economy. Toyota hit by over 100 Prius brake complaints TOKYO – Toyota Motor Corp. has been hit by over 100 complaints in the U.S. and Japan about brake problems with the popular Prius hybrid, the latest in a spate of quality troubles for the automaker as it grapples with massive global recalls. The Japanese company's sales are being battered in the U.S. — Toyota's biggest market — after recalls of top-selling models to fix a gas pedal that can stick in the depressed position. The new Prius gas-electric hybrid, which went on sale in Japan and the U.S. in May 2009, is not part of the recalls that extend to Europe and China, covering nearly 4.5 million vehicles. The U.S. National…

The fourth-generation Toyota Prius has made an early debut thanks to spy photographer who caught the vehicle uncovered at a photo shoot. There's a lot of the Mirai hydrogen vehicle in the new Prius' design. Such details include very busy front-end with split opening grille and forked headlights, to a similar side profile and blacked-out C-Pillar. The Prius will be keeping the liftback shape that it has been using since the seconf-generation model. We don't know any details on the next-generation Prius hybrid powertrain, but Green Car Reports says the next Prius will use Toyota's new global modular platform and possibly have all-wheel drive as an option. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com November 4, 2013 While the high price and slow sales led to end of the Aston Martin Cygnet last month, Aston Martin CEO Ulrich Bez said the decision to end the model is due to Toyota killing the iQ next year. The Cygnet was essentially a dressed up version of the iQ. “We stopped the Cygnet as Toyota itself will stop the iQ in 2014 and we don’t want to invest any more,” Bez told Autocar. “I think Aston did a good thing with the Cygnet and I’m disappointed it didn’t work out. It’s a great little car, particularly in London. It will be a cult car in the future and will be well looked after.” Bez also said that he had big …

It has been almost three years since our last report on the Lexus GS F. At that time, we reported that the model would use a detuned version of the LF-A's V10 engine with 500+ horsepower. Nothing came of that rumor, but a new one has come across our rumorpile desk. Autocar has learned from sources that GS F is still incoming and will use a tuned version of the 5.0L V8 found the upcoming RC F Coupe producing somewhere in the range of 500 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. This will be paired up to a eight-speed automatic and Torsen differential. The run to 60 MPH is expected to be in the mid four second range and reach a top speed of 170 MPH. The report goes on to s…

Today, Toyota released a more detailed teaser image of the nearly reborn Land Cruiser. Featuring a boxy, egg crate grille, and a profile similar to the new Lexus GX, we have a pretty good idea what the Land Cruiser will look like. Since the two will share most of the body, only the front fenders, grille, and rear tailgate will offer much in terms of styling differentiation. Old and New Land Cruiser Silhouettes - Via Toyota We expect the Land Cruiser to be powered by the same 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 that produces 349-hp and 479 lb-ft of torque in the GX. The Truth About Cars » Editorials » Industry » Safety Why Toyota Must Replace Flawed CTS Gas Pedal With Superior Denso Pedal By Paul Niedermeyer on February 1, 2010 Toyota uses two different electronic gas pedal designs in its cars. The version built by CTS (lower) is the subject of a massive recall, and the 2.3 million units in affected Toyota cars are to be “fixed” by the insertion of a steel shim. This CTS design is also being modified for new Toyota production, currently suspended. To our knowledge, Toyotas built with the other design (by Denso, upper) are not subject to any recalls or NHTSA investigations,. We have spent the last two days tearing down both unit…

LX 470 losing star power By Paul & Anita Lienert To test the redesigned 2006 Lexus LX 470, we headed out to Los Angeles with another couple for a sightseeing vacation. What better way to put the Japanese luxury sport-utility vehicle -- the expensive sibling of the Toyota Land Cruiser -- through its paces than to load it up with four adults and a week's worth of luggage? The LX 470's chronic weak point, an underpowered engine, has been addressed on the '06 model. Its 4.7-liter V-8 engine now makes an extra 40 horsepower compared with last year. But despite the improvements, the Lexus still felt a bit old and due for a major overhaul. We drove an amply equipped, e…

There has been one request that Lexus dealers have been asking for the past few years. "Third-row seating is the No. 1 issue we hear from dealers. We feel like we're missing a 35,000-units-a-year opportunity. We're working hard to rectify that," said Lexus Division chief Jeff Bracken to Automotive News. "We could bring it to market in 2016 or 2017. If we can get it, that's the priority. We won't be bothered if it steps on RX. We want it." So how does Lexus plan on pulling this off? There appears to be two options on table. The first is making RX bigger. The current Toyota Highlander currently follows this idea with extending the body three inches to fit a third row. How…

With the increasing strength of Yen, Japanese automakers are finding it harder to make a profit on vehicles built in Japan. The situation is becoming so bad, that Toyota is thinking about making a drastic change; move Lexus production. Toyoda acknowledges that Lexus models may follow. But where would they head to? Most likely to the US where most of Lexus models are sold. However, there is a problem. DETROIT — Toyota Motor Corp. sells more hybrid vehicles than any other automaker, but an environmental group is targeting the company anyway, saying the average fuel economy of Toyota vehicles is worse than it was 20 years ago. San Francisco-based Bluewater Network, which advocates government action to reduce dependence on fossil fuels, plans to run newspaper ads this week with the headline, "Is Toyota a Wolf in Sheep's Clothing?" The ads feature a photograph of Toyota President Katsuaki Watanabe alongside a wolf in a business suit. A corporate image for a company directly involved with consumers is a very fragile thing. A savvy company can carefully cultivate and nurture an image over a period of years. Okay, I'm normally not the one impressed by Lexus, but I just found out about the GS350 through an US Open ad, and I'm definitely impressed. You have to give kudos to Lexus for their relentless pursuit of leading the segment, even if their attempts fail in the eyes of experts. They're almost like the desperate fat kid in school who will try anything to become respected, like offer more horsepower, more room, or more technology than anyone else. Lexus is an overacheiver and you have to respect them for that... Anyway, the point I was making is that they'll do anything, even if it means cannabalizing some of their older products. The $44K GS350 has 303 horses, or 13 more t…

Back in 2011, Toyota made a very bold prediction; the Prius would be the best-selling Toyota model in the U.S. by the end of this decade. This seemed legitimate as gas prices had been climbing a steady rate and the Prius was the most popular hybrid. But that meant beating the Toyota Camry which in 2010 sold 327,104 models (the Prius only sold 140,928 models in 2010). To do this, Toyota would create the Prius family with the introduction of the Prius C, V, and Plug-In Hybrids. Five years on after this bold prediction, Toyota is reconsidering their plans. Thanks to lower gas prices (and in turn, consumers returning to pickups and crossovers) and models such as the Camry…

TCC Test: 2007 Lexus LS460 There's little doubt Lexus has come a long, long way since it debuted in 1989, and the LS460 is the sum of that evolution. The new sedan is a technological marvel to the point even Lexus engineers can't recall all the gadgets available. The '07 LS460 is certain to raise interest levels, even among the most dedicated Euro-philes. And well it should. Lexus raised the bar with the original LS sedan's pricing. Now it is back with a car that challenges the competition at their own game. Read "2007 Lexus LS460: Breakthrough or near-miss?" @ The Car Connection

Drew Dowdell Managing Editor - CheersandGears.com September 9th, 2013 Toyota announced two voluntary recalls today totaling 235,000 Toyota and Lexus vehicles. The first recall of 133,000 vehicles includes 2006 - 2010 model year Highlander Hybrid and 2006 - 2008 model year Lexus RX 400h. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com September 24, 2012 2012 was supposed to be the year that Toyota would begin selling the electric version of the iQ minicar called the eQ. When it introduced the vehicle back in 2010 expected, Toyota said it planned to sell several thousand of the vehicles per year. "Two years later, there are many difficulties," said Takeshi Uchiyamada, Toyota's vice chairman and the engineer who oversees vehicle development. Now, Toyota is planning to only sell about 100 of the eQ vehicles in the United States and Japan in an extremely limited release. "The current capabilities of electric vehicles do not meet society's needs, whether…

IL Insider: Lexus Mulls High-Performance Driving School Date posted: 03-20-2006 LAKE LAS VEGAS, Nevada — "Lexus performance" has always been a bit of an oxymoron, but the Japanese automaker is hoping to remedy that problem. Lexus officials tell Inside Line they will likely open a high-performance driving school for owners of such products as the 2007 GS 450h and the 2006 IS 350. "It's being considered," Lexus spokesman Bill Ussery told IL. "It probably will be held in various spots around the country. It will be very exclusive." Lexus says the IS, which was launched in October, sold over 15,000 units through the end of 2005. It said 68 percent of total sales were t…

Lexus is giving its performance brand a couple new additions in the near future. A source tells Auto Guide that at the recent Lexus USA National Dealer Meeting in Los Angeles, the luxury automaker announced the convertible version of the RC F would be coming in the near future. There was no mention of whether or not the standard RC would be getting a convertible as well, but we wouldn't be surprised if there are plans for it. Lexus also confirmed that the long rumored GS-F would be heading into production in the near future. The model will share some of the styling cues from the RC-F and pack the 5.0L V8 producing close to 500 horsepower. Source: Auto Guide William Mal…

We could be seeing a convertible version of Scion FR-S within a few years, most likely retaining the 2.0L boxer-four with 197 HP. Source: Autobild View full article

Toyota announced today that they will be increasing their plan for a $10 billion investment in North America over 5 years to a $13 billion investment in the same time period. William Maley Staff Writer - CheersandGears.com December 12, 2013 Since Mercedes-Benz has introduced the new CLA-Class, many luxury automakers are joining in as a way to bring in younger buyers and drive up sales. One automaker you'll not see partaking in this display is Lexus. Group Vice President and General Manager of Lexus, Jeff Bracken tells Automotive News that the automaker will not build a competitor to the CLA. "We will not head down below $30,000. We have Toyota and Scion to handle that price level for us," said Bracken. Now Bracken does admit that the CLA is a huge success in the U.S. "They are off to a great start. Scion has been called Toyota's experimental division as it allows Toyota to try new products and ideas (although it hasn't been used for this in a few years). Now with this, you would think Toyota would introduce some new hybrid or electric vehicle. But Green Car Reports reports that it will not likely happen anytime soon. Scion chief Doug Murtha tells Green Car Reports the brand is still maintaining its focus on providing vehicles for those under 35, a group that isn't quite ready to spend the cash for these type of powertrain technologies. “People think that this would have a lot of appeal with our target audience; and it absolutely does, and the environmental benefit…

William Maley Editor/Reporter - CheersandGears.com March 6, 2012 Lexus decided that the Geneva Motor Show was the best place to unveil the refreshed RX crossover. As we saw in pictures leaked back in February, the RX gains the "spindle grille" as seen on the GS and a strip of LED lights running around the headlights. The back end gets some new design tweaks. Inside, the RX is pretty much the same except for a redesigned steering wheel. The RX also gets an updated version of the Remote Touch interface that should make the infotainment system more intuitive. Engines are a carryover from the previous model. The Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ coupes have earned a lot of praise agile and nimble handling. But many agree that they could use more power. The 2.0L boxer-four only produces 205 horsepower and 156 pound-feet of torque. Rumors have been swirling about possibly turbocharging the engine. But the chief engineer on the 86 and BRZ said that turbocharging is not in the cards for this generation. “When we launched 86, I got literally millions of questions from around the world of ‘when would you be launching the turbo version? I believe that often times I answered that there won’t be a turbo version, and there were some articles in the media that Mr Tada doesn’t like a turbo,"…

I didn't even look for this. It was suggested for me, so I watched it. Well, here it is. They have apparently put some thought into this car and want to remain major player in this niche. It looks like the entry level LE will be starting at $30,000 (US). Also, only hybrid 4-cylinder engines (which make respectable horsepower) will be powering this latest generation of Camry.

But there was time when Toyota meant excitement; cars like the Celica, Supra, and MR2 cemented the brand as building some of best sports cars before hanging it up and building appliances. According to an article in Automotive News, Toyota plans to move the Tundra and Tacoma to a shared platform, internally called "F1". The platform is to be used globally and will require a bit of modularity. The platform is said to be nearing completion and the next Tundra could be debuting for the 2021 model year. The Tacoma will likely join later as it was redesigned in 2015 and given a refresh for 2020 at the Chicago Auto Show along with a bunch of other TRD models like the Sequoia TRD Pro. For US consumption, all Tundras and most Tacomas are built at the company's San Antonio, Texas plant. Moving to a single platform would make things easier and cheaper o…

Toyota has announced that it will be recalling 1.03 million vehicles worldwide to fix an issue that could start a fire. According to Reuters, the problem deals with a wiring harness that connects to the hybrid system's power control unit. Vibrations and accumulating dirt can wear down the wire insulation at the connection point. This will expose the bare wires and possibly cause an electric short - increasing the chances of a fire. Toyota has told the news service they have one report of a vehicle in Japan that went up in smoke. The majority of vehicles involved in the recall are located in Japan. Last month, we reported that Lexus was dropping 2.5L V6 for the turbocharged 2.0L four in the IS sedan for Europe. We heard the engine would be coming to the states, but no timeframe was given. Today, Lexus announced details on the 2016 IS for North America. The big news is the turbo 2.0L is part of the changes, along with another engine. First up is the IS 200t, which takes the place of the IS 250. This packs a 2.0L turbo-four with 241 horsepower and 258 pound-feet. This is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Now if you want all-wheel drive, you oddly can't get it with the turbo-four. You'll have to opt the IS 300 AWD which packs a 3.5L V6 with 255…

All this corporate demolition isn’t over yet. Because of trust issues, Toyota will be dealing with poor sales and customer rage for well over the next decade.
