Yeah, its that time of year again. We get a couple of days in the 60's with some nice sun and suddenly I'm jonesing for an open top. I checked Craigslist and found a LeBaron for $950 and a Sebring for $1100. Ebay reveals a couple SuperBeetle convertibles that would be fantastic, even if they need some work. Alas, I shant be getting one anytime soon.

This weekend is/will be fantastic weather wise. Low to mid 50'a, sunshine, and a gentle breeze. Can't waste the whole weekend indoors that's for sure, so it's time to get a head start on spring cleaning for the cars. What's done: Vacuumed and cleaned the interiors of both cars Detailed the Intrepid's interior (vents, switches, cracks, etc.) Cleaned the dirty off of the door frames Cleaned the dirt and grime off of the lower inside edge of the doors Cleaned and organized the trunks Added P/S fluid to the Prizm Cleaned the gunk off of the P/S fluid reservoir What's on tap for tomorrow: Adjust the serpentine belt on the Intrepid Thoroughly wash …

http://www.vancouversun.com/news/student+allegedly+takes+Calgary+school+secretary+hostage+Olympian+addresses+students/2642833/story.html This has got to be the dumbest thing I've ever heard. I mean I'm glad everyone is safe and all but, sheesh, someone was off his meds today. Take someone hostage at knifepoint over an athletic injury sustained in likely the eighth or ninth grade and then wait all these years... storm back into the school and take a secretary hostage... and then let her go in exchange for a bottle of water? Just goes to show that no matter what some Canadians say, America does not have a monopoly on dementia.

Saudi Arabia Rejects Pakistani Diplomat Because of His Name Owing to an unfortunate matter of translation, Pakistani diplomat Akbar Zeb will not become the next Pakistani ambassador to Saudi Arabia. Mr Zeb's credentials are impressive: he is the former envoy to the United States , India , South Africa and Canada . But despite his impressive career, his name proved to be an immovable hurdle. When translated into Arabic, it means "Large penis". In a region that stresses modesty in public, this could not stand. Akbar is a customary Muslim name meaning "great", and while Zeb is not an uncommon Pakistani name, in Arabic it is a slang reference to the penis and…

Not that anyone particularly cares or is likely to notice, but I expect to be 'away' from the board for the better part of a week. Going in for a bit of surgery Thursday and I expect to be laying around popping Percocets and dozing at will for some days. I started my extended hyperventilating first thing this morning; I like to jack up early. >:/

While looking for a '57 Oldsmobile Fiesta hardtop wagon picture for the "Wagon Love" thread, I found this sketch: That would be a nice looking truck; I love the '57 Oldsmobile lineup, and '55-'57 GMC 'Blue Chip' trucks are my favorite. I know Camino has made posts in the past about what phantom vehicles you'd like to see, so here's my selection to start it off. Post yours if you care to share

Thanks for the hockey gold. I guess we just have to remind you where Crosby came from. That gives us a final total of 14 golds, the most ever won by a single country in the winter Olympics, beating the tied records of the Soviets and Norwegians.

I am almost done with the 2010 Recount of my ad collection. Done to date: Chrysler (944), Ford (1347) and GM (3444) are done, and the independants are mostly sorted & awaiting counting (est: 350), then the dreary foreign ads will be the only thing left (est (200). That's a total of around 6300 ads. Yes, I'll get to those request in short order. I went thru maybe a 16-ft tall stack of National Geographics and de-bound them to get clean, full-sheet ads out. Those are all processed..... but being 'in the groove', I am eyeballing a 16-in stack of Motor Trends & C&Ds from '02-08. Lots of decent, performance-oriented ads there, and my post -say- 1990 ad count is pa…

I was thinking about this again last night while I walked back to my car after picking up some groceries at Safeway. I saw a beautiful silver/black 17 inch alloy 2006-7 Monte Carlo LT. It drove off and I saw some of its good angles. I thought to myself, had there been a little more "nip and tuck" to the styling update and had there been a 3800 V6 under the hood, I would have bought one...without a doubt. I still like my Buicks very much, but I know how much I like the coupe with bigger doors, buckets, a console and more of a wrap-around driver's environment. So I say "coupe"...even though I like sedans, though not as much. Your take?

My city has recently purchased a mobile speed vehicle that will remotely radar speeders without having an officer sitting in. They interviewed an officer on the local news station, but were not allowed to disclose the vehicle. The only clues are the screen captures below...it appears to be a red SUV or van. My first guess a Chevy Tahoe or Chevy Express. However, after comparing interiors, I'm not sure. Video: http://tinyurl.com/ylsal8k

Well, I guess they have trained killer whales perform all over the world, but handling them or training them is something that gets a "no thanks." I will say the same about sky-diving..."no thanks." What happened today at Sea World was very sad. Even sadder was the fact that spectators had to watch it. This whale was a problem, having done this sort of thing many years ago...they should have put him on a ship and sent him back to the waters of Puget Sound or the Inside Package. Story here Did this stun you as well? Do you think they should stop having these exhibits? Not having a killer whale show wouldn't be a deal breaker. Most famous world aquariums don't hav…

US OKs $150 million to help Yemen fight terrorism WASHINGTON – The Pentagon has approved $150 million in military assistance to Yemen, the country where al-Qaida linked militants planned the failed Christmas Day airliner attack over Detroit, The Associated Press has learned. Administration officials said the money was approved Friday by Defense Secretary Robert Gates and is more than double the amount of U.S. aid to Yemen last year. It will pay for military equipment and training for Yemeni forces. U.S. officials worry that Yemen is becoming the next significant terrorist staging ground, amid ongoing signs that lower-level al-Qaida operatives have been moving into the …

I've had several jerk bosses over the years. One would think that a boss with a very different approach MIGHT be a good thing. Not so in my experience. I do much better with the "in your face, tell-it-like-it-is" bosses. That way, you blow up and get it over with. My jerk boss is a flatliner who, not surprisingly, is passive aggressive. He and I have had our problems. But THIS STORY is NOT about me. I have this annoying, geeky but well-intentioned co-worker that is nearing retirement. Today my dad purchased a 2009 Impala LS in Slate Metallic, which will arrive on Thursday. It's the one I mentioned in the start of my previous thread. It's equipped much like my 2007 Impala, with Ebony Cloth buckets, OnStar, XM, Leather wheel, Folding Seat, 16" Alloys and Spoiler, but in addition this one also has Bluetooth and the now standard Dual-Zone climate control. Currently has 17000km (10500mi) on it and is less than a year since manufacture (mid-March 2009). Since it was built before the bankruptcy so this is probably the newest vehicle we'll ever have that was made by General Motors Corporation versus General Motors Company LLC. That being said there migh…

I often drive by a L-M dealership and am able to glance at their inventory that is on the lot or in the showroom. Sometimes I actually stop in. They are a low-key dealership. They have a beautiful pearl white Lincoln MKS. They also have a silver one. From the outside, the car has got quite a stance. Most of its angles are good. I am not so sure I like the austronaut effect once inside. It has the high console just like the new Taurus. Also, once inside, you know you are in one hefty car. I think it's a very attractive vehicle, but it's way above my price point and way above the "statement" I need to make with my car - that is, if I need to make one at all. I ca…

Well,...there have been "rumors" of a new Stingray for awhile...but, yesterday I got a confirmation from a friend of mine at GM that indeed the STINGRAY is set to return. Based upon the solstice/sky platform, the new stingray will be introduced quite soon !!..or so it seems. GM has done several "production mock ups" of this model, which will expand the "CORVETTE" brand into a TWO Model line, & there may be More Corvette models in the future ! Another "tidbit" I was told is that GM is seriously considering bringing back the "GRAND PRIX"...possibly even the GTO !!! They may "return" as either Chevy or Buick models !!!!

Frustrated Owner Bulldozes Home Ahead Of Foreclosure Like many people, Terry Hoskins has had troubles with his bank. But his solution to foreclosure might be unique. Hoskins said he's been in a struggle with RiverHills Bank over his Clermont County home for nearly a decade, a struggle that was coming to an end as the bank began foreclosure proceedings on his $350,000 home. "When I see I owe $160,000 on a home valued at $350,000, and someone decides they want to take it – no, I wasn't going to stand for that, so I took it down," Hoskins said. I stumbled over this nice Wiki chart of top sales figures in the US since 1899. It's amazing how nobody was able to touch Ford between 1911 and 1926, and then the 1927 Chevy came in and swooped up top sales and Chevy's first million units in a year. It seems Chevy and Ford duked it out for the top spot between the Great Depression and about 1971, then Chevy entered a first place winning streak until Ford barely edged above in 1988. In 1990, Ford regained first place for another 10 consecutive years. What amazes me is that Pontiac was GM's best selling brand in 2000. Anybody have any idea how this might have happened? I can't think of any major Pontiac debuts in 2000…

Congratulations to Jamie McMurray! He drove a Chevrolet Impala to victory in an oft-delayed Daytona 500, holding off an unbelievable late-race charge by Dale Earnhardt, Jr., who came in 2nd in another Chevrolet. Jamie's tearful victory interview was touching and real. It was the first race I've watched in a long time. I don't remember there being so many good looking folks involved in the sport. It makes me want to get caught up in it again, something I haven't done since Dale Sr.'s death, and the new rules seem geared toward more exciting racing.

Polish newspaper claims 'Pedobear' is 2010 Vancouver Olympic mascot A Polish newspaper mistakenly identified "Pedobear", a notorious internet meme, as one of the mascots of the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. The Gazeta Olsztynska published an image showing the bear alongside genuine Olympic mascots Quatchi, Sumi, Miga and Mukmuk to illustrate a feature about the Games. It appears that the newspaper lifted the picture from Google Images, unaware that it had been created as a prank by Michael Barrick, a Canadian artist and graphic designer. Pedobear, who is on the far right of the picture, was originally devised by members of the anarchic 4chan message board as …

So I've been thinking about the future of the car. Assuming that electric cars are the future... or at least some sort of hybrid drivetrain, and that motors, engines, batterys/capacitors will continue to shrink, I was thinking that the current debate of FWD vs. RWD will change radically. FWD's biggest selling point is that the weight of the engine is over the drive wheels. And for the car makers, its a packaging benefit. Since electrics tend to put the batterys in the center of the car, and there are many prototypes of electric motors that are located in the wheels of the car, negating the need for a large motor in the front of the car, the weight is actually shifting …

I am thinking of... sending out some emails to a few local Chevy dealers asking for a price on a truck. Would there still be any interest in certain circles of enthusiasts for original parts catalogs on microfiche, or has the internet's easy access of information pretty much killed said interest? I remember a time not so long ago when people would search high and low for the little envelopes full of slides, but is that still true today? The reason I ask is I have some that I'm looking to get rid of, but am wondering what would be a reasonable price to ask for it all.

I love most food. I don't like the following: Any meat you have to work (ribs) or that is too red, but love tri-tip, sirloin and London Broil, for example Any fish you have to work (mussels, clams, crab), but love swordfish, halibut, and shark, for example Hate pecan pie Can't tolerate any spicy cuisines like Thai, Indian or Ethiopian - guaranteed to be "out of commission" in 2 hours, but like Cantonese Chinese and Japanese What are specific food items or cuisines you won't eat?

...I will not be plowing a snowstorm. The ROPOS made it through the last massive snowfall, and a second day of cleanup plowing, just fine. But yesterday when I went to move it, reverse was gone from the trans. After a mad dash to find the right trans, all efforts have failed - so for the first time ever, I will not be able to meet my obligations as far as plowing goes. I guess 25 years of not missing a single storm is a pretty good record, but it still makes me feel like $h! to have to admit defeat and bring that streak to a close. Up until today, I had been out there pushing snow in every single snowstorm since '85, and driven in every one since '79.…

Ok, of this I am certain: there are Denny's from Boston to Barstow. That being said, they are doing the "no coupon - no strings attached" Free Grand Slam breakfast today, from 6am to 2pm. I'm walking over there with 2 co-workers for lunch to get a late breakfast (LOL). Anyone else partake? While not Bob's Big Boy, their food is at least edible.

I know a lot of people ar in to trading cars but it never occured to me that somebody would try to trade for my car. As many of you know I'm trying to sell my 2005 mustang gt (girlfriend can't drive stick blah blah blah we've all heard it.) somebody decided to suggest trading their white on tan 2004 BMW 325 auto 4 door. It only has 39k miles to my 72k and looks to be in mint condition. Soooo tempting. The two biggest things holding me back was I was planning on getting a 5-6 grand jeep that could old us over for 1.5 to 2 years and then I would get my new mustang while using the rest of the money to pay off the credit card I wrote a check off of to buy the mustang. If…

Ah yes, winter. Time for comfort food. My grandmother used to make this simple, hearty dish to warm us up after being out in the cold: 40 ounce can butter beans/dried limas, rinsed 1 pound tube mild sausage, formed into bitesize patties 1 medium onion, chopped 1/2 cup brown sugar 1 cup ketchup preheat oven to 400 place sausage bites into skillet with enough water to cover completely, cover pan and bring to boil add onion to pan, cook sausage and onion until water evaporates and sausage starts to brown drain fat and place sausage and onion in baking dish with rinsed beans, add ketchup and brown sugar and mix all ingredients together bake at 400 for about 30 min…

Being chatted up while in line...it can be tolerable or it can be annoying. It's tolerable only when there is NO ulterior motive. That is, you find out that the person you are in line next to is from the same part of the country, went to a high school or college close to the one you went to, if not the SAME one, or is in the same occupation. The conversation is not strained. It ranges from annoying to sickening when you have NOTHING in common with the person and there is a general edginess about it (read "multi-level.") Yeah, I know, I've complained about this before. Last Friday, I'm in line for a Safeway deli sandwich (they can be damn good). This guy behind me…

Today, I saw a bunch of last(2)gen Monte Carlos on a major boulevard in my area. They ranged anywhere from early 2000s up to the 2006/2007. Some of them, unfortunately, were kind of "blingy(sp)." I look at this car and study it. It has some good angles and some bad ones. The overall side profile is good. The frontal 3/4 view is good, too. The rear hump is not at all good and the too-low and too-heavy fender sculpting is not good, either. This is a car that could have been much better. I think that it was "sort of" intended to be a Cutlass Supreme price-point personal coupe, though it was not marketed that way. I think the GP 2-door that ran through 2002 was way …

Have you ever looked something up on Wikipedia, then like 45 minutes later you're hit about a hundred links and now you're on a completely unrelated page? Today was one of those day. I ended up on the Official state car page and started scanning through. It seems like most countries transport their heads of state in the usual suspects, BMWs, Rolls Royces, Mercedes and the like. But Brazil uses something I wouldn't have expected.

Let the Lindsey hype begin: Vonn is Sports Illustrated cover girl By Chris Chase Lindsey Vonn is hoping the Sports Illustrated cover jinx doesn't cross international borders. America's great Winter Olympic hope is featured on the front of SI's Winter Olympic preview issue, which hit newsstands Wednesday. Vonn's semi-provocative pose has drawn the predictable ire from those who claim that it objectifies her. She's an athlete, not a sex symbol, the chorus inevitably reminds us. From womentalksports.com: Vonn is first a GREAT athlete, but she also represents norm of feminine attractiveness. The combination of athleticism and attractiveness make Vonn the…

Has anyone ever heard of this before? Around the country and especially around the upper Midwest, dozens of bright college-age males have been found drowned in rivers, lakes, and ponds after a night of drinking. The "smiley face killer" theory was proposed by a couple retired NYPD cops because a dozen or so of the crime scenes had smiley faces carved into objects nearby. They are found after they have left a bar or party alone. I believe one person survived and told the police someone had pushed them over the edge into a river. The retired cops have pieced together clues and believe it may even be a ring of serial killers around the country. The reason I bring this …

FITCHBURG, Mass. -- A 79-year old driver plowed into a store in Fitchburg on Monday afternoon. The elderly woman not only accelerated into the building, but she drove over two curbs before crashing right through the storefront window. Firefighters pulled the woman out of her car and away from a sheet of broken glass that was hanging just inches from her head. Fortunately, she was able to walk away. “My first reaction...how did she do that,” said Simone Shoruy, who filmed the accident scene. Shoruy immediately rushed to the scene. “It looked like she was parking. She opened her door and before she even got out or anything, the door shut and she just accelerated into …

It occurred to me today that I never shared any of my pictures from my trip last month, so now I guess would be as good a time as any! Very lucky to visit the Pima Air and Space Museum whose inventory includes a VC-137 like those used by Kennedy as well as Eisenhower's Constellation and Truman's DC-4. Not to mention a Convair B-36 Peacemaker. The Constellation has to be my all-time favorite aircraft so it was nice to finally see one in person. Also paid a visit to the Barry Goldwater memorial park and took in a Suns game.

It is without a doubt that GM makes the best-SMELLING new cars. Check out the smell of an up-level GM brand like Cadillac or Buick, for example. I remember the great smell of our new Cutlass Supremes, so much so that I would get up on weekend mornings, in pajamas, put on a bathrobe, and go SIT IN THEM. I can't explain it...but they smelled new, clean, and neither sweet nor harsh. I am bringing this up because I just dropped by a Ford dealership this afternoon. I checked out some new Fusion 4s (not buying, just test-sitting). They don't smell that good. They (cloth seat equipped) smell just like a new athletic gear from REI. Kudos for being a great car that got ever…

It's snowing. It has been all day. A LOT. A LOT more than expected. It won't stop. It just keeps coming and coming and coming. I had a "plan" today to get up, eat and leave for Philly/Jersey/etc. before it really started and because the forecast up there was better, drier, etc. After some issues, got rolling around 9:45, it was snowing & white here but dry about 5 miles from home, hit Wawa for coffee & kept going. Got to just past Milton on Rt. 1 north (for those of you who know DE beach area), the road all of a sudden turned wet & covered in brown salt then I saw I was a few cars back from a salt truck. I thought I could escape DE without getting the G8 crud…

BEIJING -- China suspended military exchanges with the United States and threatened sanctions against American defense companies Saturday, just hours after Washington announced $6.4 billion in planned arms sales to Taiwan. The development has further strained the complex relations between the two powers, which are increasingly linked by security and economic issues. China's Defense Ministry said the sales to self-governing Taiwan, which the mainland claims as its own, cause "severe harm" to overall U.S.-China cooperation, the state-run Xinhua News Agency reported. The Foreign Ministry threatened sanctions against U.S. companies involved in the arms sales. A spokeswoman…

Dictionaries have been removed from classrooms in southern California schools after a parent complained about a child reading the definition for "oral sex". Merriam Webster's 10th edition, which has been used for the past few years in fourth and fifth grade classrooms (for children aged nine to 10) in Menifee Union school district, has been pulled from shelves over fears that the "sexually graphic" entry is "just not age appropriate", according to the area's local paper. The dictionary's online definition of the term is "oral stimulation of the genitals". "It's hard to sit and read the dictionary, but we'll be looking to find other things of a graphic nature," district …

This has been the month of Januray: Cold...wait 3 days...Cold with 20 mph winds (high tems in the teens, wind chills in the negatives)...wait three days...6 inches of snow...wait 6 days...high temps in the 50's...wait 3 days...high temps in the 60's...wait 3 days...monsoon...wait 3 days...back to being cold (and windy, but not nearly as bad as earlier in the month)...wait 3 days...6 inches of snow I'm almost certain that I have lived 3 of the 4 seasons in the last 29 days. Even better, people here do stupid $h! whilst driving in the snow. For example, today I was at a red light, the light turned green, so I went on my merry way, some guy driving a Magnum on the cross …

It's not just for saturns anymore...... Anyways, I've been reading quite a few stories about people cutting, or just doing things a whole new way in this lovely economy. I've always been a guy who didn't need a bunch of stuff, but I find it amazing the stuff you can live without. Haven't missed cable, that's for sure. Hulu FTW. Looks the used car idea (for the wife) will stay that way going forward..... My new car needs to stay under 20 grand, period. I think I can get a Cruze or Aveo (if I go the GM route) pretty decently loaded (I'm not a frills kinda guy) for 15-17k. I want to have as few payments of anything possible. Cash is going to be king from here on out..…
