So I had some circa '71 GM seatbelt buckles laying around, left over from the Cutlass days (these didn't work because GM had changed the buckle/harness design in '72). Deciding not to let them go to waste, I decided it would be cool to put them to good use. After a few cigarettes, some glue and thread, and a cheap-o Dickies strap I had snagged for free later, I had this: Yeah, the pic sucks. Cut my 3GS some slack. Sure, Levy's makes a seat belt strap, but it's nowhere as cool as this. While Levy's claims that they use real, recycled buckles, you only have to take one look at their straps to see that it's obvious they're just blowing hot air. However, this is made from…

They say flexibility is good. And, you know, they’re right. Sometimes, changing plans and “going with the flow” can be just as rewarding (if not more so) as carrying out the plans you’ve made…. At least, that’s what I’m counting on right now…. Since the COBRA issue (through my former employer) had not been resolved and the rental company, despite having the reservations for a couple weeks, ended up having only a Chevrolet Suburban (among a couple other cars I wasn’t interested in driving for just over a week) for me, I changed the dates of my road trip. Not too big of a deal … and, it may turn out better than I expected. Course, since our internet went down Tuesday …

I am right now listening to their new (cover) album YEAH! Why is a band like they once were, doing COVER records? and to make things worse, covering one of my all time favorite songs, by one of my all time favorite bands HANGING ON THE TELEPHONE by BLONDIE. WTF? Why is Joe Elliot singing FRICKING BLONDIE TUNES? You're covering DEBBIE, you're seriously messin with me. i supported the bad when they were getting dumped on during the ADRENALIZE and X days.....defended their right to do SLANG. I will give them this. Its not a bad 'sounding record'. At least its reasonably heavy. BUT CAN'T YOU MAKE YOUR OWN NEW RECORD? and not have it suck and have it at leas…

I'm going to have to buy a truck... not that it wasn't fun to get the rental filthy driving this... This is from my trip this week to the Idaho Falls, ID area, where I will be moving in a couple weeks. First, you drive along seeing pretty much nothing but this... Then you suddenly come to this... What's this? A road? SWEEEET! Just to clarify... It gets better, you can drive up another road to the other side, or follow along the bottom of the ravine. From the other side: Road along the bottom: The area I'll be living in is flat, but is right beside the foothills to the rockies. This was barely getting into rolling hills, not even the foothills, l…

Any 2007 or 2008 GMC Sierra/Chevy Silverado owners that would like to post here (or send me a PM) about what kind of average MPG you've been getting? It would be helpful to my inquiring mind - I'm curious as to what "real world" MPG numbers look like. It probably would be good to know whether you have a reg/ext/crew cab, 2wd or 4wd, and what size engine you've got under the hood. Thanks in advance!

Lat night on the way home from running an errand, saw my first blue VW ID4 EV in the wild. Have to say they look better in person than photos and I like the lighting on the outside, the turn lights are an outline of the headlight, very easy to see, very quiet and looked good. Impressed with the look, just too small for me.

Ugh...my Y key on my laptop just broke off, so now everytime I want to press it, I have to fumble around for the little rubber nob that it originally stuck to. Pain in the ass. I'm really tempted to take a tiny dab of superglue and put it back on myself, but since this is a lease laptop, I should probably just do it the correct way and have it taken in to get fixed. You'd be amazed how often you use the letter 'y' and don't even realize it. Oh well, at least another vowel like 'a' or 'e' didn't break off, otherwise I'd be even more frustrated. Ironically, the y key broke off when I typed the word "Camry" in my last post. Damn you, Dell. I've only had this for a …

At the beginning of the school year for my kids, my wife was talking to one of the district supervisors and was told that they don't have enough people to take care of the custodial positions within the district. I thought about that for a bit and decided to help out. The idea was that I would work as a substitute custodian doing the 4 hour evening shift and then head up north to work my normal 9 hour graveyard shift working on airplanes. It started out working pretty well, the district substitute coordinator had me working most everyday like that. Then, last week, she called me at home and asked me to work on of the 8 hour shifts at one of the schools. She was pretty…

I saw this on CNN this afternoon. Hoax Devices Part Of Cartoon Ad Campaign (WBZ) BOSTON The suspicious devices which forced bomb units to scramble across Boston today were actually magnetic lights that are part of a marketing campaign for a television cartoon. The reports forced the temporary shutdowns of Interstate 93 out of the city, a key inbound roadway, a bridge between Boston and Cambridge, and a portion of the Charles River but were quickly determined not to be explosive. "It's a hoax -- and it's not funny," Gov. Deval Patrick said. All of the devices are magnetic lights which resemble a character on the show "Aqua Teen Hunger Force", on Turner Broadcasting'…

HAHA, how do you like that topic title? I have been checking out 1st gen Cadillac CTS's lately, and I have noticed a little square on the rear bumper (about 2" by 2"), and I was wondering if anyone knew what that was. I have seen them on several different cars lately and was just curious. It is not a rear parking assist sensor. I am going to attach this pic that I found on the internet, but I"m not sure if I'm legally allowed to. I guess if my computer does blow up on me, I"m good!? So, last Wednesday I check my personal email in the late morning and find this message waiting for me: Now I have purchased several items from the GMC Collection web site over the past couple of years (http://www.gmccollection.com/) and follow them on Facebook for updates, to ask inquiries, and to give my suggestions for items I'd like to purchase. I recently inquired about the availability of holiday ornaments, which they offered in 2010 (missed) and 2011 (got both) [note: there will be none this year]. I guess as a result of that latest round of questioning I received the email above. So fast forward to Saturday's mail delivery. This is what I retrieved out of th…

So, I guess you guys have heard of this website. It's a place for old classmates to gather to keep in touch. 2007 was my 25th year out of high school, having graduated in 1982. We didn't have a reunion party last year, but one is in the works for this year. Anyway, as a member of the site, you get a "guestbook", a place for people to sign in and say "hi". This morning I got an email, someone signed in a greeting. When I saw the name I was a bit surprised, it was from a kid who was heavy in earlier grades. By the time we graduated, he was a buff, goodlooking guy, a hit with the ladies. I didn't think he knew I existed at the time, but it was nice of him to remember…

I was walking along sidewalk enjoying the sunny, warm day when I glanced over at this new Jeep Commander sitting in the disabled spot of the parking lot of a retail store. The store was for the handicapped to outfit their vehicles for their special needs. Suddenly the vehicle started and shot forward about 8 ft like a bullet...jumped over a curb and stopped against a sign. The elderly couple looking like they were 80 years old camly backed up and drove away. Now if they had been facing the store window and a pedestrian had been there, someone would have been hurt or killed. Now, it begs the question, should the elderly and disabled be tested to a higher standard than …

I came across this '85 Cutlass today and am very tempted. Not much in the way of pictures, but it looks like a farm car (probably gently driven) and only has 90K on the odo. $1800 seems like a great price. Anyone know the reliability with G-body Cutlasses?

So it appears that my sister could trade in her Alero and get a Cruze LS for about $50 a month. ($900 down, $159 a month for 39 months = $7100). Haggle that $100 off, take off $3500 in GM credits and $1500 or so in trade (that's on the low side) and you're at $2000 for 39 months = $51 a month. However, I don't know what the residual value or money factor (interest rate/2400) are on the Cruze LT leases, which is obviously more desirable. Similarly, for a base Regal (agreed upon selling price of MSRP, $27k) can be had for $249 a month for 39 months, $2000 down. I found a $28.8k model (adds heated seats, sunroof, dual power seats, some other stuff) for $25.5k, so not knowi…

A coworker of mine has been talking for some time about trading his loaded Alero on a Cobalt SS/SC. He'd build up, then deflate... so I wasn't sure if he'd ever do it. Well, he did it, and I am officially jealous. He's about 54, compact, with s&p hair, and single (he's straight.) He says he's not quite ready to say he's having a midlife crisis... Last Thursday night/Friday morning a thunderstorm rolled through Fargo. One of the loudest thunderstorms I have ever been in the middle of. The thunder was actually shaking the house and the lightning was non-stop. Very odd for this time of year as well as it was only like 60 that day and in the mid 50s when this storm rolled through. The storm dropped hail all the way through town, but the worst part was in the southern end of town. It dropped golf ball size hail throughout most of southern Fargo, and baseball size hail in a few places. Anyway, it happened to hit all the dealerships in town with big enough hail that they received damage. Including the Cadillac dea…

This is a great documovie and it makes me miss when the guys ran real cars or had some sort of personality that was different from corporate smiles. If there was emotion and personality in NASCAR it would be better today in my opinion.

As I get ready to get off of work this morning and head home from McChord AFB, I thought to wish everyone a happy Indepedence Day. Its nice to be in the States for this one (last year at this time I was deployed) and able to spend the rest of the day with my family. Enjoy everyone!

Hand-me-down Special is a 1977 not 1978 like this one but I still stopped breating for a sec. =Enjoy. P.S. Under 11 in a 5000 lbs. car... Impressive!

Dang it. I am holding for a online chat with the customer support people for the server of my Camaro Club's website. Our forum is messed up and I know I didn't do it. I got ahold of someone and he was trying to research the problem and got cut off. Now I am on hold again. I would really like to get that thing fixed and then maybe get some rest. I've been up since 6PM last night. Does this kind of thing drive anyone else nuts?

Let's play a game of car scrabble connecting model names and rebuilds. Rules: 1. You can connect cars by model name to model name of a different brand, model name to trim name of a different brand, model to model of the same brand but different generations, or from model to model via rebadge. You show the connections with N> for name, Y> for year, or R> for rebadge. 2. You can connect 2 cars by model name as long as they do not share a brand name and get 2 points .(Example: Edsel Citation N> Chevy Citation). You can connect names that have slightly different spelling as long as the name is pronounced the same, major changes in name structure…

So, I used to do these threads over at MT, and I think I'm going to start them back up here. The premise is simple. I'll post two or more vehicles and you decide which one you'd want. You can decide this based on if you were spending your own money, if they were free, however. The vehicles may all be in one class, or they may be totally different. I'll give a hint as to what is contained in the thread title. It sparks up discussion, it's fun to fantasize, and it takes some thought. So after some back story, here are your first choices- A piece over @ R&T made this a simple duo to start off with. Two vehicle that have battled it out for over 2 decades both …

I saw it!! I saw it!! Just got back from seeing the Transformers movie.....OMFG, it was awesome. To hear that voice, to see those characters again, well, it turned me into a 10 year old again. I couldn't help it, I got goosebumps all over when Optimus Prime first spoke.....needless to say that the movie action was wonderful. Sure, it was "normal" Michael Bay action, lots of shakey hand-cam work, lots of explosions and action. Good thing is you can take the family to see the movie if you want to, there's maybe only a couple of times any form of foul language is used, and typically it won't be much more than a damn or a $h!....nothing horrible. If yo…

Here are some Pics of the truck and trailer that I am driving around. This truck is a DCX fleet vehicle. It has the 6 speed stick in it and its a 4X4 Laramie trim. It has some added goodies like an air suspension in the back and a 100 gallon fuel tank. The Jeeps I will have Pics of tomorrow hopefully.... you are not going to believe what we are doing with one of them!!!

Cheers and Gears has a policy of no political talk on the boards, but it's impossible to do the traditional review of the year's significant events without mentioning some of the actions of the federal government that so permeate the news and our lives. Those who get their delicate sensibilities easily offended are urged to skip this post and go elsewhere, such as link. That said, here are some of the things that happened in our country: The deadliest high school shooting in U.S. history occurred in Parkland, Florida in February. Teenagers became vocal activists, in stark contrast to timid politicians, and reignited the gun control debate. “America’s Dad” Bil…

Hey guys, long time no post, but I was reading this article and wanted to share it. I know how some people on here like to talk and a lot of the time its pretty enlightening stuff. But my upbringing was pretty politically oriented in the sense that stubborn Irish Catholics love to fight with eachother over anything after a few rounds, and in Massachusetts its usually politics. But Bobby Kennedy wasn't even a Massachusetts liberal, he was pretty much the first and the last of an age of reform in the sense that he was supposed to start a revolution, or atleast be the first of a new line of leaders as visionary as he was. He was before my time, but I think we all want a …

Interesting article looking at the hidden environmental impact of the Hybrids. Prius Outdoes Hummer in Environmental Damage A quote from the article "Building a Toyota Prius causes more environmental damage than a Hummer that is on the road for three times longer than a Prius".

First off, I'd like to apologize for the lack of frontpage updates in the past week and also the long delay on the Miami show report which does contain some interesting and exclusive information. The simple fact is I've just been swamped at work, occasionally being the only one in the office for a few hours at a time for a variety of reasons. And though it started out as simply helping out by taking photos of cars and posting details of them, the job has quickly matured into a real position as Internet Sales Manager (we only have 25 cars and a staff of 5, but regardless...) as well as handling so much other stuff. Its really a compliment to me that I'm entrusted with so m…

Many thanks to Anton, an Autoblog reader from Down Under, who was kind enough to grab a couple of snapshots showing us one of the Queensland Police Department's new highway patrol cars. We've reported on Toyota Australia's TRD Aurion before -- it's basically the Camry we want but can't have. With a much better-looking face and 323 supercharged horses underhood, the Aussie-built sedan is inherently more appealing than the vanillamobile available at our local Toyota stores. And now the fuzz has them, too. Earlier this month, the Queensland police welcomed some of the "regular" Aurions into its white-liveried standard fleet. Our new friend Anton noticed a TRD Aurion dresse…
