My '95 Olds 88 is getting to the point where its not only embarassing to be seen in, but miserable to drive. I need to find a good used car. I've decided to get either an Olds Alero or Dodge Intrepid. Anybody have any input on potential mechanical problems that are common with either of them or anything else I should look out for while searching?

I found the perfect car to replace your Olds. A 1007 Mitsubishi Galant, $99/month. Thats less than what you pay for repairs. I can look into it and get terms of the lease (I'm assuming its either a massive amount up front or insanely low mileage) if you're interested. You can be one of the few, the proud, the Galantists.

Wait, that's not Brooke's best side he's working on! TURN AROUND, BROOKIE!!!! I did like Marty for awhile, and he's got THE LOOK, but he's kind of a BIG DULL DUD. Brandon was strange. 1988 BMW Dealership Time capsule For some twisted reason we're all attracted to the mysterious allure of an abandoned building. In Oakville, Ontario there stands a building that for a petrol head trumps even the eeriest of places. At only a stones throw away from our dealership in Ajax, Ontario we're surprised we haven't heard about this place before. The story goes as follows. In 1988 the dealer, located on Royal Windsor Drive and operating under the name "Citation Motors", had his concession license revoked due to unknown reasons. They then moved to Toronto under the name "Downtown BMW" which in 2002 closed up shop. The owner, apparently a well-of…

just saw this article on banshift.com and thought it was pretty cool. never knew gmc made a v12. Yeah, yeah, yeah. We know that these things are basically two V6 engines hitched together (in a common block) and that they are lazy and aren’t really all that hot rod-able. Used in firetrucks, big rigs, to run pumps, and other mundane applications, these behemoth engines made 275hp and 630 lb/ft at about 2,000 RPM when new and we think that they’re all kinds of neat. Sure, sticking one in a car or old truck wouldn’t be for creating some sort of insane running hot rod, but shoehorning one into a light enough car would result in something that should burn tires for miles if se…

What did you do for your mamma on her special day? My mom wanted to go to Easton, MD (where I used to live) for lunch, including some locally famous cream of crab soup. Then we took the short trek to St. Michaels, MD, to another locally famous spot for some ice cream. She said she had a great day, which was good. I thought of something funny on the way home after dropping her off though... both places are gay-owned.

So... how bad's your hangover? ...Or in other words, how was your night? I started the night off lonely... at my grandparents. My parents and my brother went somewhere else. Eventually, people came, and the party began. Started with Smirnoffs... surprised? Played some cad... lost. Then came new years... 3... 2... 1... Downed a small bottle of Whiskey. That later turned out to be a huge mistake as that stuff is pretty potent. After that more people came and we played more cad as well as a game of quarters (CLR, I think? Left, center, right...?). Won my money back. Drank more Smirnoffs inbetween glasses of water. Then it was just straight partying until I started…

What about the future of Nissan and Renault? Their "future" is on the other end of the scales... also "in the balance", as it were, yet MSN chooses to single out the world's #1 automaker as somehow weak./RANT!

Article appears here: http://www.slate.com/id/2161309/ As you've probably heard, there's been an explosion of inequality in the United States over the past four decades. The gap between high-skilled and low-skilled workers is bigger than ever before, and it continues to grow. How can we close the gap? Well, I suppose we could round up a bunch of assembly-line workers and force them to mow the lawns of corporate vice presidents. Because the gap I'm talking about is the gap in leisure time, and it's the least educated who are pulling ahead. In 1965, leisure was pretty much equally distributed across classes. People of the same age, sex, and family size tended to have abo…

Remember this thread? Something's wrong with my car, and I'm told it may be related to my accident. I went on a trip this weekend to visit family. My driveway's on about a 10-15º incline, and when I sat down, my seat broke - the seat and and the seat back tilted backwards about 30º - as if it were hinged only at the back. When I got to my in-laws, I got a good look, and what happened is this: There's a metal bar that's used to raise and lower the front of the seat via a screw-type mechanism that rotates the bar like an axle. An arm attached to the bar raises and lowers the seat as the bar twists. the female part of this screw-lift equasion had snapped clean off of …

May 10, 2007 - In an outbreak reminiscent of the early stages of SARS and bird flu, pigs are growing sick and dying across China’s southeastern Guangdong province. Roughly 3,000 pigs have been infected on hundreds of family farms and about 300 have died. Early reports from Chinese scientists attribute the outbreak to porcine respiratory and reproductive syndrome (PRRS), which first appeared 18 years ago and was originally called Mystery Swine Disease. But certain symptoms of the current outbreak, including massive hemorrhaging, are not consistent with PRRS, and might indicate that the disease—most likely caused by a virus—has mutated. The outbreak has renewed fears that a…

I present to you my weekend, which consisted of replacing my spark plugs and wires as well as those on my father's car. I must compliment GM Powertrain in the design of the 4.0l Aurora V8. On the surface, looks hard beyond the even row of plugs which are right up front on the aluminum block... However, the ends have these nifty little pulltabs that allow easy removal... And the odd-numbered plugs that look impossible to replace because they're mounted behind and below the coil pack (which itself has several control module above it) is extrodinarily easy because the coil pack can be unplugged and unbolted in minutes... Total time from hood pop to hood shut (inclu…

Now THATS PROGRESS! 10 years later its the same exact engine. The only difference is that the S40 gets a bit better mileage than my car, and im assuming thats because the S40 is smaller/lighter and has a 5spd hooked up to it instead of my 4spd.

Back when the tsunami engulfed a portion of Japan's industrial base, we heard that some paint pigments that are produced there would be in very short supply. The lasting effects of that disaster are evident on car lots across America, as metallic black is disappearing as a color choice, replaced by good old regular black. Ford's "Tuxedo Black" appears to have vanished, and GM's "Black Granite" seems nowhere to be found. Today I saw a line of "Black" 2012 Escapes, and James Bond's newly leased Regal will be "Onyx Black", which I believe is GM's version of the tried-and-true. I've seen some 2012 metallic black vehicles, but it is evident there are much fewer of them on …

The L WORD, a show on SHOWTIME about Lesbians. It's pretty much is a dumb show. The storylines and dialogue and dumb as heck (ok, not dumb, just overdone)and are merely needed as a part to set up the real story. Which is to have a show on TV with chicks kissing. So since I just got satellite and a big ass plasma TV, of course (and because its on like ALL THE TIME) I find myself watching it. I watch it to watch women make out, and that's about it. Just curious if there is any sort of outside opinions on whether you think the show sucks, is good, or otherwise. Most showtime orgiinal shows are pretty lame anyways. Or maybe, the story is fine, its just the acting…

Flybrian's Random Car Showcase Presents... The 1969 Buick Century Cruiser Through boredom and...well, just boredom, I bring you the fourth in likely many little 'diaries' of a completely random car. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Looking back, the most engaging aspect of Detroit's golden age was not horsepower, luxury, or even styling. It was the fanciful imagination that guided designers and dreamers in producing their concept cars. The term of the day, however, was dream car and appropriately so. This was a time was technology flowed from the labs into our lives with such ease and successive rapidity that the future seemed but a few short years away. And since our wildest d…

Posted: Thursday, August 6 2009 at 03:27 pm CT by Bob Sullivan The best way to get the attention of a classroom full of rowdy kids is to turn the lights off. And the best way to get the attention of Internet users is to essentially do the same thing. Thursday’s Twitter denial-of-service hack certainly grabbed everyone's attention. Nothing like a total shutdown to make people sit up and take notice. But relatively speaking, denialof-service attacks are harmless. Everyone's been through it - CNN, Yahoo, Microsoft. Heck, Facebook and LiveJournal were hit Thursday, too, by the social media bandwidth bandit. (Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC Universal.) …

1: DIGITAL DEATH MANAGER "Life-logging" will be a way of life, affecting how we record and remember what we do. Young sees a role for someone who can take the mass of life-logged material, and make stories out of it. That could be useful during our lives (for personal-brand purposes) but also in death. A customer traded it in with very few miles on it, and it's in spotless condition. Driving the little mule made me realize something, once again: driving a slow, basic vehicle can be good therapy. Gone were my need to listen to the exhaust and to look good. It was driving as transportation, in an honest little workhorse. All pretension was stripped away. Do I really…

Hey gang... I'm not up to par on BMWs, and my parents are considering buying a leftover 2016 or new 2017 BMW X3. Mom recently turned 65, dad is 69 1/2 and mom has desired a BMW for a while. They sold off their 2005 Saturn VUE and want to downsize to just one car (my dad has a '13 VW Passat SE that he wants to trade in). Any reason they should not consider the BMW X3? The X3 is the model in their price range, mom test drove the X1 and couldn't stand it. I can get her GM Supplier pricing on a GM CUV/SUV, but the XT5 is a little more than what she wants to spend and she initially wasn't thrilled with the Buick Envision (though she said she'd reconsider it and take one f…

There are those among us who are, shall we say, camera whores. We take pictures any chance we get. There are also times when you just happen to have your camera/camera phone with you to snap a cool, weird, crazy, or some combination of the three photo. This thread is for you! So let's begin. Today I want to the nearby auto auction for fun, and snapped a few photos with my phone...I thought I'd share: First up, for the Ford fans, is a Ford Elite Next is a very sexy Dodge Shadow, complete with taped up bumper: And the other car a took a photo of is the car I want to buy, a 300M

Mostly a scoring based league, about 75% touchdowns etc. and 25% yardage bonuses. I have the number one pick in a twelve team league. I do not pick again until 24 and 25. Manning, Tomlinson, Alexander, or Priest Holmes? Someone please help me!!!!! Others, please ask your fantasy football questions here.....

how exactly are you feeling about the current issues going on? For those who don't-feel free to say what you think might happen to this once big union town. Just no fighting is all that I ask. :) I'm going to try not to think too hard about it right now-but I know that Michigan' s ecomony looks to take another major hit. Ford, Delphi.... Makes me worry for family and friends.... :( Also makes me wonder if this should be my last year in Michiagn...... :(

I received confirmation in the mail that my application to vote was accepted, so I will be voting in the November election. I am actually excited. I registered non-partisan. I like to have all of my options open to me at all times. :AH-HA_wink: So have you registered yet?

Insured and re-registered the Grand Marquis Monday, got a battery for it today. Duralast Gold. It was about 20 degrees and it hadn't been started or taken around the block in at least a month. It was 22 degrees. Fired right up, took it for a 10 mile drive through traffic, back roads, and some highway. Works like a champ. Next week it's getting a "new" transmission.

It was a UPS Dodge Caravan. What was so odd was that all of it's badges were removed. I wonder what's up with that.

In September 2009, I road tripped along the Illinois portion of the Lincoln Highway and Route 66 from Illinois to California. That trip increased my awareness of "old routes" in general, including others like the Dixie Highway and US Route 6. Last year's journey also increased my awareness of the "road ahead". Whether the road is "less traveled" or filled with traffic, looking ahead is most-often fun, in more ways than one. Around the Elgin area, I "exercise" my Monte Carlos on the same "old" roads west of Elgin, including US Route 20: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Route_20 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Route_20_in_Illinois Some of those roads, particularly…

Tough for me to believe that my awesome 2010 road trip... ...is done. If I could be on the road 24/7/365, I would jump on that chance/opportunity in a heartbeat! In the meantime, it is time to start planning my 2011 road trip, most-likely via US Route 66 and into the northwest United States (Oregon, Washington, the Dakotas, Minnesota, etc.). I'm also considering a couple mini road trips yet in 2010, in mid September (place TBD) and in November, during Thanksgiving weekend, to TN. As for my Nor'Easter Trek road trip, I had a GREAT time traveling through IL, IN, MI, OH, PA, NY, MA, NH, MA, CT, NY, NJ, PA, DE, MD, VA, PA, OH, IN, and IL, from Wednesday, August 4 to Su…

So I drop my seventeen year old son off at guitar Center, and cruise through the local Ford dealer...look at a few cars while my son is looking at guitars...then I slide over to the Hyundai dealer because my son wants to spend some time playing one last guitar. I'm checking out the Genesis coupe, and some guy has his two kids in the back seat (young, perhaps about 6 and 8, boy and girl). Guys wife is test driving a Sonota, and this guy is telling me how a V6 Genesis is faster than a Camaro SS or Mustang GT, and how Hyundai is the most awesomist car company ever. I'm trying hard not to LMFAO at this point... He then says that Hyundais never break...at that moment, bot…

I am PCS and I approve this message! A few weeks ago when I was home in Delaware, I filled out my primary absentee ballot. The primary is tomorrow for both Democrats and Republicans for Governor, Lt. Governor, various State House and Senate races and County Council positions. I always vote, and I think it's important to do so, there have been a few races in Delaware that has been decided by one vote. I've been asked many times if I was a Republican on this forum or what my political leanings are, I guess many of you by now think you know how I vote because of my preference for Obama for President, don't be so sure. I vote the best person in my view for the job, and…

Ferrari 4000 Carbon Fiber notebook June 2, 2005 In terms of high tech brands, Ferrari and Acer make quite a quinella. With gigabytes of data downloaded wirelessly from the car telemetry each race meeting and analysed more meticulously than Michael Jackson’s private life, high performance computers and Formula 1 racing are almost synonymous. Now the last Ferrari Acer computer really didn’t look the part – it was Ferrari Red but didn’t quite capture the essence of F1. the newly announced Ferrari 4000 notebook computer is a different matter though. Like almost everything, it looks much better because you can see the weave of the carbon fibre from which the casing is con…

Spent a couple hours at the Keeneland Concours d'Elegance this morning and I have to say that it was one of the best experiences I've ever had! I wish those of you in the area that post on here could have met up there with me, it was well worth the $15 entry...WELL worth it. I overheard that over 200 Corvettes were there, it was the featured make this year, plus Packards, Porsches, Ferraris, Austin Healeys, Maseratis, Lambos, Minis, Miatas, Audis, Bimmers, Benzs, Alfas, GMs, Fords, Chryslers, racecars, and more that I'm sure I'm forgetting. Including!!!!! 5 Corvette concept cars on loan from the GM Heritage Museum in Detroit!! More cars than you can shake a stick…

One option I am pondering for when my 500 lease is up this fall is to find a dirt cheap used ford freestar to drive for 2 years or so. generally, i like my vehicles to have a full center console with armrest. I do not like the narrow fold down armrests off the seats that vans typically have. the interior of many ford products has the same kind of look and plastics. i was debating if a guy could do a hack job on say, a center console from a junked 500 or say migrate the rear console of a freestyle or expedition or something into working between the front seats of the freestar? obviously developing a solid mounting system and trying to determine the proper height …
