I have a 04 sierra, 5.3 automatic that has a clunk in the driveline. This noise occurs when pulling out from a stop. It also occurs when shifting into and out of second gear. This is also louder , like a clang when downshifting into second under a load when I am towing. My dealer has been no help, can you help me?

I've always had this replaced at a tune up. This time around, I bought the $ 3.49 item. There is a label on the shroud that says PCV valve, so I pulled off the shroud cover. With the intake manifold exposed, I do NOT see where the spot for the PCV valve is located. Do any of you guys know where this is on the transversely mounted 3800 V6?

Was wondering if engine misfire/hesitation takes a toll on timing chains? My Regal's 3800 V6 had a flat spot in the low rpms where acceleration after shifting into 4th (approx 47 mph) was accompanied by hesitation and misfiring which cleared itself up above 55 mph. Initially, I thought it was the torque converter, but it was only under acceleration after a low throttle upshift (such as merging or approaching a hill) and not all the time. Had this exact same thing happen about 5 years ago and I changed plug wires which got rid of it. I got new plug wires 2 weeks ago and the problem is gone! This was the car's only driveability quirk. My question: I had this condition…

So I don't want to spend a hundred+ bucks on a new stereo for the Prizm, so I figure I'd put the Shadow's nicer one in it, and give the Shadow it's stock radio back. Since the Prizm already has an aftermarket stereo, it has the wiring harness...so no need to buy one. Here's the problem though: I've never done this before. Also, Looking at the colors of the wiring harness wires verses the colors of there stereo's wires...they're different. Does anyone know where I can find diagrams or instructions or something? I tried searching but no luck...but I am probably not looking it up right.

Yup, now it's the Shadow's turn to have something go wrong with it, complete all 3 cars having something brake. Starter's bad...car turns over-ish but won't start...tried jumping it but nothing, plus the battery is new ...repeated tests lead to smoke coming from said starter. It goes to the shop tomorrow. Also, there metal pieces bolted onto each sde of the car in the shape of where the rocker panels meats the rear wheel well...because underneath is rusty. Well it looks like the rust ate through the remaining metal underneath because I found the sheet metal that was bolted n on the ground...poor car is so rusty.

got it put back together.. well, mostly my dad did, he drove it, it's much better from what he tells me. going to see what SES code is in it tomorrow and replace one boot that cracked that's on the valve cover. what was done, replace intake gaskets, ..didn't run, tore back down to them (vacuum leak, found the hose), rebuild it, idled rough, compression checked 150 - 175 psi on each cylinder, new plugs, wires from a 99 pont GA 3.4. hoping every thing's better, or at least back to only a seldom misfire in #4 (had the least comp)

So I drove the Cobalt out this morning to run some errands for my Grandmother and all was well with the car, then this evening I ran out to get some pizza and as I pulled onto the expressway the car started shaking badly above about 60kph (40mph for the Yanks). At first I thought I had a flat tire so I pulled off at the next exit and examined the car, checked the tire pressure as well as the rims and nothing seemed out of place. There's no snow/ice in the wheel wells making contact with any of the wheels either. I got on the expressway again and it started again at the same speed. At first I thought it could be the road surface but I'd driven on the same road three ti…

ok so i have a 1993 chevy 4dr blazer 4x4. i have had the vehicle for a little over a year and when i got the vehicle, the 4wd worked fine. but then i started to have problems with going from 2hi to 4hi. i have an electric switch (not the manual) and for the longest time it was stuck in 4hi. but ive also noticed that it is not engaged in 4wd at all. is there perhaps a bad fuse? a bad transfer case? is it an easy fix? i dont plan on keeping the vehicle much longer, so i dont want to put too much money into it. i do hear it trying to engage sometimes but it never takes. and help would be much appreciated.

I'm getting a check engine light on my '04 CR-V. It only happens below half a tank of gas. If I open and close the gas cap, a few trips later the light will reset. When I do this, it seems like there is a lot of vacuum in the tank as I can hear the air rush in. About 6 months ago I had the fuel lines replace and fuel pump replaced. Any ideas?

Every time an automaker makes an economy car, they always give it short, fat tires; giving it a look that was pulled off much better by the BMW Isetta. Yet every time a you look at a car that's built for a mileage competition, you see tall, skinny tires. Given the lower rolling resistance, higher final gearing and better traction of tall and skinny tires, why don't more manufacturers use them?

I've went through about a fuse a night now which tells me I have a problem I no its gonna require some tracing which I'm not going to like so where would be the best place to start I have a few ideas but would like to know if anyone else had more experience with these shorts... Its my 85 Riviera if that would help so where should I start the circuit only is composed of dash lighting and the tail lights.

Hi All, just a quick question - I own a 1999 Silverado Extended Cab LT which is equipped with power heated side mirrors. The other night I parked on a street in atown I was visiting and when I pulled my mirror in toward the window to prevent someone from inadvertantly snapping it off... it snapped off. It is still attached, but the rotating mechanism has come apart and I had to tape the thing in place. Great. So My question is this: Has anyone here experienced the same thing on their Silverado? If so, is it repairable or do I really need to shell out for a new mirror? Is the replacement fairly easy or do I also need to pay high labour costs to install? Thanks - …

Even the base 92 Regal coupe has the dashboard lights that stay on for 30 seconds after you shut the doors. Tonight, after going into Borders for an hour, I noticed the dash lights were still on when I got back to the parked car. When I got home, they failed to go off after 30 seconds. I fiddled with various controls to no avail. Come to think of it, about 2 months ago, driving through a forested area in the middle of the day, the dash lights came on and I DO NOT have the twilight sentinel option, so no automatic lights (it's a 92), but this never happened again until tonight. I have to get to work tomorrow, so I pulled the fuse and it's a temporary fix. HELP…

Does anyone know of an online parts source that's reasonable? Long gone are the days, when I had friends at the local NAPA store, where I'd get parts for the same as what the local shop paid. Right now I am looking an EGR valve among other things, and two hundred bucks is just too much for a no-name brand replacement. Thanks in advance

Thats when I noticed i can pretty much crank it over by hand. So I guess my question would be is that normal? i know how to do a compression test on a motor that is in the car cuz you just tur…

Hi all. The past two months I've been having an issue with the rear wiper arm of my 2006 GMC Envoy. When it swipes, the arm will push out but not retract/spring back, so the first swipe it clears the rear hatch window but on the return swing it sticks out and looses contact with the glass. It then does not seat right into the wiper arm holder on the gate. Is this a known problem?

Folks: Is it possible to remove the factory spoiler on a base MC or GP without making too much of a mess? Can it be done and then have the body shop where the car was delivered (no, not in a hospital) do a minor touch up on the paint? Let me know. Maybe you're not big on spoilers either. Thanks!

So.. I just bought a pair of SLP Loudmouth IIs for the Stang. That started me thinking about my '73 Camaro. I'm most likely going to try to replace the transmission in it early next year (hopefully my tax refund will be generous) The exhaust is all custom and welded up and that would be a perfect opportunity to put a better system on it. Currently, I'm running Hedman Shorties to 2.5 inch pipes into 3 inch Flowmaster single chamber Delta Flow mufflers (Probably the equivalent to what they call the 10 Series off road mufflers but I can't remember the series number from when I bought them) then reducing to 2 inches for the tail pipes (because at the time, they didn't make t…

I know there are a lot of smart people on the board so I am enlisting your help. My Regal, 1992, with the above transaxle (no electronic control ... that came the following year). Under a cruise type of throttle, it will exhibit a shudder between 3rd gear and overdrive at a speed of about 50 mph....when it tends to hunt betwen 3rd and 4th anyway. OK, the car does have 222,000 original miles. The trans has been serviced every 20,000 miles and it is mostly freeway driving. Shifts from 1 to 2 and 2 to 3 are virtually flawless and so are most 3-4 shifts when under moderate acceleration. When it does do this little act (it's been going on for a couple of months), pressin…

My G5 came with the standard non-leather wrapped wheel (Cruise Control but no audio controls). I've been thinking about treating myself to a leather wrapped one and wondering what the feasibility would be. http://cgi.ebay.ca/Chevy-Cobalt-Black-Leat...id=p3286.c0.m14 ^^^ I found this Ebay listing that has a leather wheel for the Cobalt/G5 but it's got the stereo controls on it. If I bought that part and had it interchanged with the one I got now would it be easy to wire up the radio buttons to work (ie is it a simple difference from the current factory hookup to as it would be with the Radio buttons installed from the factory)?

The 2 front cooling fans don't come on even after you have driven for 15 miles. When you turn on the AC, neither fan works. The AC won't work. Is this expensive to repair? Do you have to check on several things before you will be able to find out the reason for the fans not working? If you continue to drive with the fans not working, will it damage the engine? I would never recommend a 97-03 Malibu. A real headache.

Not sure where to post this, so feel free to move where appropriate. This is a questions for insiders and people who have a lot of knowledge about platforms and the engineerings aspects of them. It involves the automaker not some project car. This would be for redesigning/heavily modifying an existing vehcile. How difficult is to to stretch the wheelbase, of a platform, widen it, lengthen the trunk, and change the roofline. In addition to these structural changes, the vehicle using this platform would need new suspnsion tuning, and work on NVH levels. Would it be easier an more cost effective to modify this platform to meet these requirements, or design a new platfo…

A friend of mine recently got back from college out of town and left his car here... now he's here to stay and wants to run it again. It's a 1996 Oldsmobile 88 3.8L Series II (Naturally Aspirated) with the 4T60E Transmission with 180K. It's been parked on a quiet street but has been exposed to the fury of -50 degree weather. There were no mechanical problems or otherwise when he parked it in August. I've been making a laundry list of stuff that needs to be done to run it after a cold Canadian winter outside. I think he should just get a new car considering how much a lot of this is going to cost in my head, but he's adamant about driving the car. So far I've come u…

I've sort of wound down to using 1 GM dealership and 1 or 2 independent shops. I've found an independent shop I really like. The owner, also a mechanic there, is real easy to talk to and has an excellent reputation among his peers and customers. So, here's the question. What is the normal mark up for parts that he has to get from the auto parts stores that he works with? Is it 20% 33.33% Or something else? I am wondering if there is a rule of thumb. Or, put another way, say I walk into AutoZone and a part retails to me for $ 100. What is a reasonable amount for that part on the final repair bill if the mechanic had to purchase it from the same store? …

Hey all, I was looking to buy some cheapy stealies for my 2001 Saab 9-5 for winter tires. Now I change from summer to winter tires on the same rim, incurring a rebalancing and mounting fee each time. This year I decided to buy some dedicated wheels for the winter tires, but I have had trouble finding reliable information about them. My car (according to TireRack.com) has 16x6.5" wheels, but the key is the bolt pattern: 5-110. I was looking at buying steel rims off a Volvo on Craigslist, but (again according to TireRack) the bolt pattern is 5-108. The question is this: can these wheels be installed on my car? Thanks!

I was talking to Sixty8 today, and mentioned that I'd like to start up the `69 and move it out of the garage. The problem is that the car hasn't run in 2 years...the last time it was driven was in the fall of `05. Since then it's been in the garage (at least it's level). There is a concern I have...I remember their being a fluid leak...however I can't remember if it antifreeze or something else. If it is antifreeze I'm worried the block may have cracked during one of the winters. So I have a few questions Does anyone know how to pop the hood on a `69 Barracuda? So the last two times I've fueled up my truck it will lag out for a second when accelerating after being stopped at a stoplight. The first time it did it it was about 15 miles after I had filled up and lagged at two stoplights one right after another then was fine until the next fill up. This last time it did it about 20 miles after filling up and lagged out at three stops one right after another then was fine. I just replaced the fuel filter about 2,000 miles ago. Anyone think it could already be clogged or do you think my fuel injectors or fuel pump is bad?

I know I read somewhere about computerized transmissions that incorporated some degree of 'learning' capability, where periods of consistent driving styles (say; aggressive throttle) could move shift points to a degree. I had thought this was told to me WRT my '94 Ford's EOA trans, but that certainly could be wrong. Reason I am wondering is, lately I have been driving my wife ex-'03 GP 3.1L about once a week. In that gas is cheaper and it gets about 23, whereas my diesel 2500HD gets around 16, it's decent for whipping around/ taxi-ing. I don't think she's driven it since she got her Malibu in Aug of '09; it's been me 97% of the time (my son the other 3%... maybe). I'…

I know that the modern way to align a vehicle involves mounting optical sensors to the wheels and reading the computer screen to tell you how far to adjust the caster/Camber/toe etc, I've done it a hundred times. But how was alignment checked before computers? Toe I can imagine using some sort of metered stick and eyeballing it, but how caster and camber were measured I can't figure out.

All right, from what I've read on here, and elsewhere, Direct Injection is going to be the new fuel delivery system on a lot of vehicles. Just a few questions about it. When I think of direct injection, I think of diesel engines with an electric supply pump from the tank, then an engine driven Fuel Injection Pump that boosts the fuel pressure up insanely, finally ending in a fuel injector that shoots the fuel directly into the combustion chamber. Is that how a gasoline-burning DI vehicle works also? And if it does, then how does the fuel mix with the air and become atomized? Another thing, wouldn't that do harm to the injector since its exposed directly to combustion…

For some reason, the truck is losing coolant and yet the engine doesn't overheat. I haven't driven it more than 25 miles one way. What could the problem be? It does release water out the exhaust at times. I hear a squealing sound when it first starts up. Temp gage never goes above 1/4. When it is low on coolant it tends to make a trashing sound?? And you can hear a gurgling sound when you start it up. I know it could be several things" head gasket intake gasket freeze plug thermostat seals I can't see any visible leaks however.

After years on driving with my elbow on the center console cover in my Regal, the vinyl now has a dimple/tear about the size of a quarter. Incidentally, it's burgundy colored vinyl. No big deal, but if it's a cheap fix, I'll do it. The console cover comes off so it can be taken somewhere. What's usually involved in something like this? Is it expensive? I know that, when used cars come in, they are accustomed to making these fixes.

So, it may sound like something that you'd find at the auto repair place between the muffler bearings and turn signal fluid... but it seems there is some nasty fluid in some rear view mirrors. Apparently, GM auto-dimming mirrors (and some other makes that use the same supplier) have a caustic substance in the mirror... and after a number of years and/or sufficient heat... they can explode or leak. How did I find out? Well, the '99 Grand Prix after spending a lifetime in the northeast, has started to leak once it has been in the hot Cali sun. Just driving along, the car made some pops... and the mirror fogged up and started to leak. After some research, it turns out the…

All right boys and girls... I know I'm normally the one with all the answers when it comes to Technical questions and How-to's, but this time, I've got one for y'all. 2001 Chevrolet Impala LS 9C1, I've got properly working DRLs (Daytime Running Lights), I've got my high-beams working, I've got my parking lights, but I've got NO low-beam headlights. Doesn't matter if I let the auto-light system work, or if I pull the headlight switch itself on. No blown fuses, no non-functional relays. Although there is a "headlamp relay" shown on the driver's side fuse panel in the side of the dash on the car, but I have yet to find that fuse. I'm wondering if that's where the probl…

I actually haven't been on here in a VERY long time. I hope everyone is doing well. Well, my 08 Vue is two years old and has about 36000 miles on it now and for a while I've been hearing this slightly annoying rattle coming from the passenger side of the dash. It sounds like its on the inside, but I'm not sure. I can only hear it with the radio off and going over bumpy or worn out streets or gravel like pavement. When the surface is smooth, the rattle instantly stops. I almost want to say it's the glove box or even the front seat, but I don't think it's either one of those, because if I press on the glove box or hold the seat steady, it still rattles. It's really …

I just did some major brake work on my '86 Pontiac Parisienne -- new calipers, new stainless steel lines, new flex hoses, new proportioning valve and new wheel cylinders. The problem is that I can't get the brakes to bleed properly. I am not getting significant amounts of air out of any of the bleeder valves at the wheels anymore (I got lots of air at first as expected, then clear fluid), but when the car is running, the pedal is mushy and the BRAKE light flickers. The booster motor cycles at every brake apply, when it is supposed to cycle every 3-5 applies. These are the electrically boosted brakes with the big booster motor that sits below the master cylider --…

What diesel engine would have been available in 1984 for the GMC Sierra line? I'm assuming there was a diesel available for teh half-ton pickups. The reason I'm asking is that I found an '84 GMC Sierra, 4x4, 8ft stepside bed, with a diesel engine for sale and would like to know if this is something I should stay away from. Here's a tiny pic from the Internet ad: TIA for your advise!!

Suppose I get one of the cars which cheap, conservative and cautious Trinacriabob drools over (LaCrosse, Grand Prix or Monte Carlo). I then don't order the BIG option package with everything in it but still want the feel of the leather wrapped wheel. (Trust me, from rentals I've had, it makes for a different driving sensation than the urethane wheel). Is there a way to add this feature (leather wrapped wheel a la factory) without pulling the steering wheel off or at least doing it after the fact with some amount of ease? I would we willing to let the dealer do it. Let me know if you have any ideas/opinions.

I’m looking for some help with an engine swap project. I’m transplanting a 1994 5.7/350 from a Suburban into my 1990 Toy rock crawler. The install has been a bit of a challenge but the engine and drive train are in the truck. I’m happy to share the mechanical learning points on this swap with anyone interested. I have a reasonable amount of mechanical experience but this is my first bout with a fuel injection swap. The current problem I have is that the engine won’t start. I’ll describe what we have done so far and would appreciate any guidance or hints that may help me get it running. Facts: . 5.7/350 TBI engine from a 94 Suburban . Factory wiring harness in e…

My 2000 Buick Regal LS has Dual Zone Climate Control, however, recently the system stopped working properly. When I have the A/C on in the regular mode only heat comes out. When the Dual mode is on, only the passenger side is cold, and again the driver's side comes out hot. Does anybody know what is going on with my car and ,if possible, how to fix it? I just got off my warantee so I'd prefer to know what's wrong before I pay somebody to fix if its beyond my ability to fix it. Well, any and all suggestons will be appreciated.

So I'm repainting he plenum and have come to a bit of a stumbling block. I forgot to get silver paint to outline the lettering. It's got Rust-Oleum high-heat primer, high heat flat black, and will eventually have high heat clear coat. For the silver. I have a can of Rust-Oleum Metallic silver. Could I use this for the lettering and cover it with the high-heat clear coat? If not, it'll have to stay black, as I want this to be dry tomorrow so it can g on the engine. I figured I'd ask to see if it would work or I'd have letters catching fire.

I have a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu MAXX LS and I would like to use my MP3 player in the car. I have never been satisfied with FM transmitters. I noticed that a bunch of the newer GM cars have a radio with an auxiliary in port on the front that would allow me to plug in my mp3 player and not have to deal with the lousy FM quality sound. I'm wondering if I were to buy the radio from something like an 06' Impala or 07' Tahoe if I'd be able to have it installed in my car and have everything work. As you all know, the radio in the Malibu handles a lot of the car's readouts, such as oil life, gas mileage and so forth. I want to make sure I don't lose those. I compared pictures…

Hi guys, My 2001 Olds Aurora 3.5 needs a new motor mount. My mech told me it's the "front motor mount," but he doesn't have the part number handy and I was wondering if I could find it cheaper online. Can someone track this down for me? Having difficulty... Pertinant info: SECOND GEN V6 ...and it's the motor mount that keeps the engine down in front. I've seen mounts listed as engine, transmission, right, left, front, back...a little lost as to what exactly GM called it for this one... THANKS

My dad owns a 2006 Pontiac G6 Sedan with the 3.5L V6 engine and 4-speed auto. The car has 51k miles on it and it has developed a noise in the left front wheel. The auto shop teacher did me a favor and took it for a spin and listened to the noise on both the drive and in the shop while on the lift. The noise only comes from the left front wheel and usually starts once the car exceeds 30 MPH (it stops when the wheel stops spinning). The auto shop teacher feels it is likely something in the transaxle, but said it could be a wheel bearing is shot (though that's not his most likely scenario). Is anyone familar with G6s, or even Malibus, of this age and this issue? It's…

This is on the old 92 Regal, nearing 250,000 miles. I think this issue has surfaced. You note it when the engine is torqued. Questions: How many are there (3800 + 4 sp transaxle)? Are they hard for the mechanic to get to? How much is parts and labor for this operation? I heard, once you're in there, to do all of them at the same time. Any experience and facts/figures? It would be appreciated.

Though this is occurring to my '06 GMC Envoy, it also occurred on my leased '05 Envoy (dealer fixed under warranty) and I'm sure the equivalent Chevrolet TrailBlazer, Oldsmobile Bravada, Buick Rainier, Saab 9-7, and Isuzu Ascender all suffer from this issue too. The rear doors of my Envoy have rubber weatherstriping around the wheel well curves that come loose, allowing wind noise and air to enter the cabin while driving. Here's what it looks like when it's properly in its place: Here is what it looks like loose and out of place: I'm getting tired of constantly pushing it back in place, only to come loose again. A friend of mine has a '01 Silverado that has just started to make a loud and "oh so very not happy" RPM related tapping sound when the engine is cool/cold. Noise appeared to go away when the engine heated up, and to his backyard mechanic's ear, it sounded like a sticky lifter, loose valve lash or other valve train related problem. As he had some other work to be done on his truck that required some professional expertise, he took the truck to a GM dealer workshop. He was totally not expecting the cause of the "valve train" noise to be driveline related, namely a cracked flex plate. GM used to be notorious for blowing flex plates. I'd like to think they've changed, bu…

Yep, it was finally time to do the brake s on the Prizm. I've put it off for a while even though the rotors have been warped for at least a couple years. However they started to squeak while driving down the road, and since I had just finished the a/c on my car, I parked the Prizm until I had time to do the brakes. It's been at least 7 years since they were ever done, maybe longer. BUt the time came to do the front rotors and pads. For pads I went with ceramics, regular non-directional rotors, and Carlson hardware kit ($12 at Rock Auto and made in USA) vs $30 the local parts store wanted) I started by giving the rotors a quick coat of high heat paint to help protect aga…

Since my car has been sitting amongst banged up cars in the dealership's body shop, I've been driving the 2006 "Rubbermaid Rattletrap" Malibu Maxx which my mom generally drives. I've noticed over the last week that the engine is acting kind of odd. When the engine is in idle (warm or cold engine) in any gear it's been tending to idle funny. You can feel the whole engine pulsing through the seat, the floorpan etc. Definitely not a serious miss, but certainly abnormal enough that you notice it right away. The engine doesn't sound too much different so from the outside it's almost imperceptible. One thing of note is that when the pulsing is happening the tach needle is…

When my car's cold (within the first 2 minutes of driving) any big bumps (think 2-3 inches suspension travel) cause a squeaking or scraping noise from the right front tire. It kind of sounds like the springs in a really old bed, if you were to jump on it. It gets quieter almost right away, and after the car warms up, it goes away completely. I took a look at the tire, and nothing looks out of place. I'm going to take it in to a dealer tomorrow - hopefully it's under warranty, whatever it is. I was just wondering if anyone here had any idea what it is. Remember, it's an '05 Cobalt LS coupe.

We got a new black Z06 brought in to our shop today. As most of you know, the roof is non-removable on that model. Except, on this particular car, the roof removed itself. Not completely, but the adhesive bond failed on the front 3 sides of the roof skin panel. We found a TSB, so there must be a precedent. GM has an adhesive kit to remedy the situation. Damn, it's a gorgeous, sexy car.

About two months ago I had taken my fog light out to clean it out and to really get to it the headlight cluster has to come out. So I had taken just the driver's side headlight and foglight out and put the headlight back in no problem. I had driven it for a good two weeks and the aim was straight on. Well when I had put the fog light back in and put everything back together the headlight aim was about a foot lower than it should be. I tried turning the adjustment clockwise and counter clockwise with not effect. I've tried reseating the whole headlight fixture several times and it's still aiming too low. Friday I had taken in my car for regular maintainable (Coolant flush,…

The 1992 Regal has had a slight shimmy for quite a while. By rotating the tires often, they are wearing exceptionally well despite the shimmy (6/32 after almost 40,000 miles). The shimmy was weird in that it was really noticeable between 55 and 65 mph, and then, by minute adjustments of the steering wheel, it might go away. A long time ago, I told a West Coast chain about this and they identified the tie rods as the probable culprits. They fixed these, when I had front struts put in, and everything seemed better...but not perfect. Within the last couple of weeks, there was a popping sound in the front passenger side, accompanied by too much bounce by pushing down. …
